Besides, I know from reading the newspapers as I wait for grocery checkout that Osama bin Laden isn't dead but living in a love nest with Saddam Hussein in a love nest in New Jersey, that some unnamed actresses have had their botox injection fail and their faces have melted, that because Michelle doesn't walk next to Barack they're on the verge of a divorce, and that he is actually in the control of the NSA.

Ake - Is it in Obama's power to stop supplying arms to Israel? I'm not 100% sure how the American political system works, but I understand that there are so many checks and balances in your constitution that such a controversial move would be easily blocked. Even if he wanted to stop arms exports, how would he go about it? And do American arms go to Israel specifically in order to attack Gaza, or as part of a general policy to maintain the balance of power in the region?

It's easy to feel smug and read the myriad magazine articles that come out showing amazing claims by wannabe US politicians or surveys that would indicate low IQ and gullibility of those who vote them in, but we are not exactly free of them ourselves this side of the pond.

We have a political party with no manifesto, no views on anything other than stopping immigration and lifting smoking restrictions and they got a huge vote in local and Euro elections. We even have a supporter of theirs on Mudcat.

We have far right fascist thugs who go around saying you are not equal to them if you have a different skin colour, different sexual orientation or even merely being a woman. We have religious groups that subject children to genital mutilation....



Oh, and we have my mate. He is more in keeping with the thread. He reckons the moon landings didn't happen, that David Ikce may have a point regarding the royal family being extra terrestrial lizards, and don't forget that our resident young earth creationist pete has benefited from a UK education.

Usually by this time, we get the quote from the politician bemoaning the increasing use of Spanish as a first language and saying that if English was good enough for Jesus.....

Or the more recent tea party one, referring to Stephen Hawking as an example as he moaned about Obamacare and saying if he had to rely on a system such as the British NHS, we wouldn't have his genius today. (My favourite part of that being that as the voice box has an American accent.....
