A post from Dick Miles [Good Soldier Schweik] on the "famous...shout" thread suggests that he used to be a cricketer. Made me wonder , just as a matter of interest, about the youthful sporting histories of Catters.

To kick off [appropriate term eh!]: I was First XI soccer goalkeeper for Hendon County School in two seasons 1948-50, and played in that position for youth club and for unit sides in my National Service, and for a Cambridge college team. Also played tennis for youth club & school.

What did you play, and who for?

I once played for a coed volleyball team on which the female players went braless as a strategy to distract male members of the opposing team.

Unfortunately, it tended to distract male members of our own team even more.

Rugby Union and Cricket at School, Second Row to start, everyone else filled out so moved to the wing, not really fast enough so ended up at Scrum Half. Cricket, batsman extraordinaire! Also played for the MCC* Junior Team.

At an early age I discovered girls and motorbikes, sport went out of the window.

Football, tennis and athletics at school.
Local League football until I was in my early 30s.
Rowing from late teens until my early 40s.
Squash from mid-20s until my late 40s
Local league table-tennis from late teens until late 40s.
Walking for ever (still doing it, pushing 70).

Oh, yes, thanks for reminder -- Forgot table tennis for club & school in my OP.
And I walked a lot too, till recently. But not so easy now, at nearly 84. — Have probably told story here before, about telling a quite-a-lot younger friend how I would always park on outskirts of Cambridge, off Gilbert Road, & walk across Midsummer Common into the City Centre.
"That's a long walk," he said; "I wouldn't want to do that."
And he's dead.
And I'm not.

What was your football position, BWM?

I played hockey (on ice), football (the real one not the one that has men running around in shorts), lacrosse, basketball, baseball and table tennis.

'football (the real one not the one that has men running around in shorts)'

...by which one gathers he means that funny pantomime they call football tho feet are hardly used, and they wear full head & body armour, & there are incomprehensible rules about each side having two separate full teams who keep arbitrarily replacing each other while the other lot has a nap or something, & then they shout out arbitrary numbers and proceed to beat one another up but ineffectually coz of the armour & helmets while the ovoid is absolutely elsewhere...

...and that's 'the real one', is it? Well, enjoy!

I was hopeless at grammar school sport. Boxing appealed but people kept hitting me. On my debut for the house cricket X1 I was out first ball. However, in my last year (4th form) I was picked for the ATHLETICS TEAM!!. (Actually, the lad supposed to go broke both ankles hurdling) I Got to go to the Inter Grammar School Athletics Tournament at RAF Cranwell - where you there, Backwoodsman? - and got a point for the school. 6th out of 20 but it was a whole point!

Yes FB, I ran at The Inter-Grammar-School tournament at RAF Cranwell several times - 100 yards and 4x100 relay. Always a great day out, and a treat to run on a 'real' athletics track instead of grass! 👍😎

Hi Michael

At grammar school played football and cricket for school teams at each age group.
Played table-tennis for Manchester YMCA as a 16-18 year old.
Played club cricket for in Cheshire League and Lancashire League teams.
In RAF played basketball, and represented my Station Teams at football and Cricket. Also played in Yorkshire League cricket for local sides.

On demob continued cricket with various League teams. Took up rugby Union in place of football and played for several Cheshire clubs including Sale.

Also played golf - single handicap and darts if that counts.

Most terrifying sport I played ( only once) was Lacrosse against a ladies team !!!

My school was Boys Grammar - it was a choice of rugby, cricket, or athletics - no football...

At 11 I had the physical build and reckless aggression cut out for rugger,
but the teachers wouldn't let me play with my glasses on....
Didn't bother me.. they were already held together with sellotape from playground scraps..

So I was made to take them off and freeze my bollocks off on the side line...

I hated cricket - boring and being made to wear long white trousers and wooly jumpers in summer term..???
That last ball that was hurled high at my forehead instead of any where near my bat or the wicket..
that was the last effin straw..
... and I was crap at running, long jump and high jump..

I wanted to play rugby or nothing..

So sod 'em i joined the school beatniks and weirdos and did drama & poetry and learned to play guitar...

.. at one point my very existence enraged the PE teacher so much he lobbed a textbook at my head
and yelled at me I was "a long haired poof !!!"

[that was the same teacher who 10 years later would be arrested for fiddling with boys...]

At the start of the 4th year we were forced to go comprehensive
and combine with the girls grammar and nearest secondary school..

I suddenly took a very keen interest in following the girls swimming team.... 😜

Don't really consider myself a 'catter these days but...

Football, Ysgol Glanwydden primary school and Ysygol John Bright first year and early second year secondary school. I lost confidence after drubbings by both Carnarfon and Aberconwy. Both sort of 8 goalish margins.

On reflection,I don't think it was all my fault but I didn't want to play again. Not sure I'd ever have had the height for it as things progressed but I'm told Sandy Kennon was only about 5 11 and he (going by my father) was good (as, in my memory but drifting a bit here was Kevin_Keelan - the best never to play for England??? ;-) ). Whatever, it stopped there.

I moved to Tunbridge Wells for 3rd year and everything was pretty much set up by then - the RU, hockey (why don't they allow left handed bats.... ;) ) and cricket were already set up and you would have had to be be all of good, willing to force yourself and interested to stand a chance.

Cricket was probably my only interest at that time. At that time there were the WI quicks, Marshall, etc. And me, I could not bat (perhaps hampered at primary school where my natural leg side hoik would always be out - they played 3/4 up the small playing field) and could not bowl either. I could find some pace but spray the ball aimlessly and spin a ball but never had a clue what to do with it. The only thing I could do was catch it.

Of course it's kind of wierd at that age. For me I'd have been bating like Viv Richards and bowling like Michael Holding... in my dreams...

cheers MGM - memories flooding back now....

The school swimming pool was outdoors and unheated..
As early as march teachers would force us to jump in the deep end.
The theory being - i reckon - a harsh regime to toughen us up in case word war 3 broke out

and we were all called up to join the army ...!!!??

Anyway, that freezing water certainly enhanced the visual appeal of the girls swimming team... 👙

Now I remember.. The best things of PE were climbing ropes and the monkey frame..
even more fun was the gymnasium trampoline..

Once after I'd waited ages for my turn, the PE teacher yelled at me to get off immediately
because my shorts had split and my tackle was swinging and bouncing freely about...

I tried to argue that "Sir, it's not fair",
because it was an all boy's class, was my turn and nothing all my classmates hadn't already seen in the showers.

And besides which, the curtains were already closed - so no girls could see in from the corridor......................

Justice did not prevail, so I was sternly told off for cheek and sent for an early shower...

Though as much as I now hated the PE teachers, and organised PE and games..
the one activity which was so much fun, probably even better than rugby - was British Bulldogs !!!

Legitimised sheer mayhem and gratuitous violence... brilliant... !!!!! 😎

Back in the late sixties I was the scorer for our grammar school first eleven cricket side. That way I got to go on all of the away trips without having to do anything strenuous.

Sat there all day with my pencil and score book, chatting up any available females and missing lessons when we left school early for evening mid-week games.

Suited me sir!

I ran track and cross country in high school. I wasn't really all that fast, but athletic team members got automatic "A" grades while grades in regular gym classes were based on how well one performed at various activities. "C" grades in gym class because one sucked at basketball or softball were bad for college-bound students who needed to keep their grade point averages up.

Crokinole, as well as:

Tennis since I was about 5 or 6 but started playing competitively in USTA leagues in my late 30's.

Pool (pocket billiards) ever since I can remember.

Basketball for 3 years in high school and in men's leagues after.

Touch football in county men's leagues.

Rock climbing and sailing in my 20's.

Baseball in the county league in my teens on teams managed by my father. Some great memories there.

Nowadays it's kayaking, fly Fishing, hiking, tennis and golf in the spring and summer as soon as I finish rehabbing my knee.

If they'd had designated free-throw shooters in high school basketball, I'd have been famous.... but when guys waved their arms at me and blocked what I was doing, I just didn't cope. Never was 'competitive'.
I played table tennis with some really strong players, including my brother, but again... never cared about being 'good'.
I liked pool and darts, but.... same story.

I did try golf, as no one jumped up and down and tried to interfere with your shots. I played 9 holes... 3 times.... quit when I finally made a par.

I find I no longer like to watch the sports where the players try to stop each other... even football/soccer, where physical contact and fouls are supposed to be avoided, but where 'tackles' are done so regularly and often with little to gain.

I like Olympic sports where the competition is against the course... ski jumping, running, vaulting, etc.

Totally useless at all sports in school - Sailed in college then took up rock climbing, hill walking and skiing (including ski mountaineering). Was chairman of local mountaineering club for 25 years. Lots of alpine stuff, some Bolivia/Peru and USA. Gave up the hard stuff about 10 years ago.....

Okay...what sports? Well, I been tryin' to put the moves on women since....umm...well, it's been a long time, eh? Since I was 8? And I have played the 99 bottles of beer game since I was, like, 14? That is where you got a lotta beer and you sit arowned with yer buddies and everyone chugs a beer...and that's ONE beer. Then everhyone chugs a nuther beer...and that's TWO beer. And you keep goin' till you hit 99 or till you lost track of the numbers! I got to 62 beer once. It was on New Years. I nearly flippin' died that night, but I would do it again anytime some buddy provides the beer, eh?

Many. But, I played the most physically demanding sport short of warfare... squash. I was hooked! And, I mean five to seven opponents in a row. Five hours on the court knocking them down EASILY one by one was fun. And these were not slouches. Some were provincial champs. Now, that was when I was in my early 20s. Anyone want to buy an Adidas racquet gym bag and three wooden squash racquets and some yellow dot balls (fuck the metal racquets)? BTW...anyone that plays blue dot is a fuckin pussie. Yes, I know that's all that the "elite" play... pussies all! I am keeping the fourth racquet... it works well on wasps and rogue robins that nest where they should not. I got a story about that robin... I gave her three chances but she wouldn't listen. Feathers flew.

I've never been a sports fan; tried football once, coach named me "Drawback."
If I had to name a sport that I do like, it would be archery. In a past life I was an archer with King Henry at Agincourt.

Arthritis has put the kibosh on that.

My only venture into competitive sports was to get dragged onto the dorm team for an intramural bowling tournament in college.   They had to have one more player or could not play.

I was truly stunning in that competition and garnered applause from the entire bowling alley when our game ended. No one in the history of the tournament had ever acheived 10 straight gutter balls.

Basketball, that great non-contact sport that gave me a life-long bad knee. Track (50 yard dash and long jump) until I screwed up my knee playing basketball.

The only good thing about getting a sports injury was that I suited up for the games but sat on the bench the whole time, where the cheerleaders gathered around me sympathetically when they weren't doing their cheerful thing.

I played footy for my school team from U11 to U15. Cricket for same for one year and was a member of a local rugby club, got a couple of listed games.

Footy, I preferred centre half but often told to play wide. Cricket, middle order, a few overs attempted spin and second slip. Rugby, tight head prop.

Nowadays I don't play any team games but enjoy skiing and muff diving.
