I'd say that many of us find better things to do than watch television, but still it's nice to have one every once in a while for important news, an occasional movie, and whatnot. I understand the average use in the US is 5 hours a day. Mine is about two hours a month.

Valerie & I did without one for most of our nearly ½C marriage. When she was missing for a while in China after Tienenman, a kind friend gave me an old B&W set to keep up with the news, & I took to The Bill (in those days a nice half-hour separate episode police-procedural) especially as a taker-off-of-anxiety resource.

My 2nd wife Emma & I share an interest in sport, and both like police soaps [Bill, Softly Softly, Frost, Endeavour, Vera, & such] for mild recreation, so we keep a big set for watching those. Nowadays I can't read much by artificial light without a lot of strain, & the telly helps to fill the evening. Old age, alas, brings the need for such compromises and accommodations!

But power to your abstinence, Dick. There are indeed, while one retains one's youth & vigour, many far more creative & satisfactory ways of using one's time & energies.

Broadens your horizons, not wishing to be impertinent, but perhaps you would be good enough to explain exactly how, and what advantage[ horizon broadening] it would have over reading a book listening to the radio getting info from the computer.

There's nothing wrong with television per se. The secret is in being very selective in the choice of programmes one watches.

My last 'idiot box' gave up the ghost 36 years ago. Since then I've of course occasionally watched tele programmes but generally I don't miss it. For the one or two programmes a week which interested me I didn't think the expenditure to be justified. Now I catch up on old comedy series and documentaries on YouTube and I'm satisfied.

Oh come on! There's some great stuff on telly! I'm loving the beebs adaptation of 'War and Peace' and Richard Fortey's new series on islands and evolution is terrific (I bet a certain 'starry pete' isn't watching it - he might learn something he doesn't want to know!).

Sometimes you catch a real gem. Near the end of last year I watched, fascinated, a programme in which team of scientists 'dissected' an extremely realistic looking (dead) Tyrannosaurus Rex! Power tools were required and there was gallons of blood and stomach contents etc. It was a brilliant and novel way of teaching its audience about how dinosaurs evolved and how they relate to creatures - like birds, for example - alive today.

And then there was another, more recent, programme, presented by Alice Roberts, about woolly mammoths and what we are learning about them through studying their remains buried in the permafrost of Siberia.

It's not all about evolution and palaeontology, of course! There's plenty of drama and comedy and documentaries covering every subject from history to contemporary social problems. And then there's endless repeats of 'Top Gear' ...

As BWM says, selectiveness is the key. There is nothing much more depressing than going into one of those homes where the bloody box is always wittering away in the background even if nobody is paying the remotest attention to it. And, yes, I can think of at least two households among my present acquaintance where this is the case.

I am following the re-runs of Star Trek DS9 (so that's 5 hours per week) and "Endeavour" (the prequels to the "Inspector Morse" series) so that makes 7 hours per week.

I used to watch the news (BBC) most evenings and Question Time but both have become such hard-core propaganda for the most dishonest right wing factors that I no longer do that, and get most factual information online.

Backwoodsman and Shimrod are spot on. If you don't want to have a telly, all power to your elbow. But try not to exude a faint air of superiority over it. There is nothing especially superior about not having a telly. Apart from anything else, if you don't have one you don't know what you're missing, and not everything on telly is designed to deprave, corrupt, rot your brain or waste your time.

Anyway, Liverpool matches are often on the telly. As tonight for example.

We do have one but seldom watch it. I enjoy radio much more, you can do other things while listening to radio. I also hate visiting with people who have the telly blaring away all during a visit, including during a meal. We just decline those invitations now. But there are occasional good things on , so, as I say, we keep a small one.

My old mum in her 80s spends most of her time in the house on her own.

Her telly is 'good company' and, apart from our daily phone calls and her regular trips to the shops, a lifeline to the greater outside world.

Dick - would you rather she got a bleedin' budgie...!!!??? 😜

The telly goes on for a couple of hours every night, but we're not both watching it all the time. Mrs Steve watches a lot of those hospital dramas. I've had two hospital stays in the last couple of years and I can tell you that the Holby one has more gorgeous lady doctors and nurses in it than the rest of the NHS put together. I can't watch any soaps though my parents have them on all the time, but then they're in their late 80s/early 90s. I like footie on the telly I must admit, and I've just watched a cracking good series about the history of Spain and another about ancient Egypt. I've got one recording about islands, presented by Richard Fortey, a fabulous man. And then there's Attenborough. A positive cornucopia, there for the taking. Are the creationists allowing the yanks to watch Life On Earth on DVD yet? :-)

I've never owned a TV, & I don't go to movies as I'm not a watcher. I love radio & books & the net. I quite often don't follow youtube links friends send. But there are times I watch a whole series of youtube clips.

We finally got a TV when I was 14 & in the 10 years till I left home I watched so little that if I wanted to see something the rest of the family didn't, we often watched that! I spent most of my time in my bedroom pretending to study & listening to the radio & doing a good job of teenage isolating.

If I say I come from a family of cyclists who never owned a car.
That I have never wanted to be burdened by car ownership,
or even take driving lessons
[apart from when I had to as conditions of employment for 2 jobs which both folded before I needed apply for a driving test]

..well 'normal' folks just tend to regard me as a suspiciously pitiful crackpot...

Now supposing I kinda feel a similar vibe when I hear otherwise intelligent folks boasting all sanctimoniously about TV ownership.... 😜

≈M≈... I have a big LCD in my living room hooked to my laptop and I sit 6' away so it's great for reading the newspaper or whatever. I am presently 2' from a 32" LCD as I type. Same deal.

As for TV, I watch some sports and some news and I record late night comedy talk shows for later viewing. Documentaries are required viewing... science, history and the like.

I suppose I watch TV about 15 hours per week and that goes to 20 hours during NFL playoff season.

There's nothing sanctimonious or boastful about it! There's are some excellent programmes on the telly - which I personally enjoy and learn a lot from. I also find them a spur to learning more. For example, the new BBC adaptation of 'War and Peace' has prompted me to read a bit more about Napoleon's Russian campaigns.

Is it possible, do you suppose, that some people without TVs might be described as "sanctimonious"?

I am, BTW, Steve, much looking forward to the Liverpool v Stoke 2nd leg match tonite. I shall be surprised if Liverpool do not hang on to, & probably even enhance, their one away-goal 1st leg advantage. But, as that guy in the Shaw* play sez: "You Never Can Tell"! - which is of course what will make the game worth watching, even in a properly constituted household like ours, consisting of one Chelsea [Emma] & one Arsenal [me] supporter.

My all time favourite genre of movies and TV is the 'Western'.
It is a vitally visual genre of big landscapes and skies..
Radio and Books, just can't compete with the medium of TV.

.. and although I live in the West of England.. somehow, looking out my window just aint the same as Cinemascope vies of the American West !!!

[even though it's mostly filmed in Canada for finance & tax reasons these days...]

We have four televisions: two downstairs and two up. The two up are flat panels: there's a 19 inch one in my wife's office and a 34 inch one on the wall in the dining room. My wife "watches" Deutsche Welle in the evening as she works; we had the "big" TV on one morning last week to catch the Weather Channel's reportage on the blizzard on the East Coast. That was the first time in a month or two we've used the bigger set.

As far as I know the ones downstairs, both CRTs, haven't been used in literally a couple of years.

That TV viewing poll group paid me five bucks to participate a couple years ago. Most of the times were that none of the four TVs were turned on, but I seem to remember following a news story then and so there was some crumb tossed to the company.

When I/we do watch, it's very, very, very selective.

We (my Beautiful Wife and I) own a TV--but not
basically for TV programing!

We watch movie DVDs, which we get from Netflix, maybe
two or three per week.

The BW will occasionally watch TV for such things
as political "debates", so-called. No accounting for
tastes. And inauguration speeches, where she will
now and then succeed in dragging me in front of the tube.
She can't get me there for the Oscars.

Someone may ask, "Don't you watch the news?" We get
our news fix from the radio (NPR).

I'd guess I don't average watching more than two hours a year of TV as TV.

I make no suggestion of moral or intellectual superiority
by stating the above. It's just a reflection of our interests and tastes.

"Whatever floats yer boat, Jack." YMMV.

I'll be watching the game on my iPhone using my mobile Sky Sports app and my Roberts Travelpad Bluetooth speaker, which was a freebie, a way of watching that I enjoy a lot. I also watch a lot of telly on the iPad. I find iPlayer a better experience that way. That little speaker is pure joy.

We shall watch on the big flatscreen in our living-room which we found as a great bargain offer in Tesco's 3 or 4 years back, snip at £100, which has performed us great service since.

Important thing is that we and you will be watching together, here in the Global Village. Come back McLuhan, all is forgiven...

I used to be an avid cinema goer. 2 or 3 times a week.
But that was before mobile phones and extortionate ticket prices.
Now, the 47" Hi Def telly, hifi headphones [and occasional 3D glasses] more than suffice for a stress free viewing experience.

The wife usually goes to bed soon after 10.00pm, leaving me to switch between freeview recordings, or Sky & Amazon Prime Movies on Demand, or pop in a blu-ray.

Switch off all the lights.. sit back, and enjoy...

Not forgetting the big bottle of sugar free tesco cloudy lemonade.... 😎

I asked a question.
I dont mind what anyone else does.
I Certainly would not force punk folk rockers 80 year old mum to have a budgie.
it seems like its just me and Lynne H, possibly acorn 4, Who do not have televisions or dont want one.
I have never made a claim to being superior, if anyone detects whiff of superiority, its not intended.
I also appreciate having the choice of being able to go to a pub and not watch a television, or occasionally to watch one, but I would not be happy if that choice was removed either way, it is particularly annoying if you are trying to have a music session and the tv is left on even if the sound is off, I always try and sit so i cannot see it., but thats just my opinion.

Some people just like to be combative , GSs.   I see shimrod and Steve are getting withdrawal symptoms and looking for a fight again. I am pretty sure I have seen more evolutionist stuff than they have creationist , and in all the threads on the subject , which only evolutionists have initiated here, just about the only evidence they offer is appeal to numbers and authority.          I read war and peace a long time ago , was looking forward to the series , but ceased watching it when I realised the beeb were doing their best to turn it into a sex romp at every opportunity.

Yes, I gathered that from the pre-publicity, Pete, and have refrained from watching. I have in fact learned over long years not to watch screen or stage adaptations of novels of which I am particularly fond. They never get then right. Esp, as here, when the work of the much-adulated but IMO absolute·kiss·of·death Andrew Davies, who, as I once said in a review (had to watch that time coz was working) suffers from the dire delusion that he can write better dialogue than Jane Austen and create better plots that Anthony Trollope -- as if!

The only exceptions were the much more sensitive adaptations of David Nokes, who made an astonishingly good fist of Richardson's Clarissa, which I should have thought the most intractable to adapt; he really caught the atmosphere of extreme deviousness on which that great work turns. & Dickens, sensitively adapted, can work now and again -- I recall a reasonable BBC Our Mutual Friend nearly 20 years ago.

I don't have a television in my apartment.

I'm old enough to recall television BC, Before Cable [TV], from my childhood; the house I was raised in, viewing was very selective, so only a few hours a week were viewed.

Traveling as an adult, I have checked in to enough hotels to notice what television is like these days. I can use a few of those buttons on the remote control, enough to look at a channel with the sound turned completely off for a few seconds before surfing to the next channel. All these years on, I have viewed more films in the privacy of a hotel room, on cable TV, than I have in the cinema (which I avoid anyhow). The Weather Channel is entertaining and sometimes they even get the forecast right.

But then I don't have a computer at home either, this post is coming from the public computer station at the local library branch.

Superiority? The opposite, I have to admit; I just have a horror of all this stuff that is new to me. Calculators, computer programs, cable subscription bundles, telephones that take your photograph, .... one of these days, though, I ought to learn how to cut and paste, and maybe then I will stop flunking blue clicky school at Mudcat.

In this day of simple TV recording there is nothing to stop anyone from recording a program and going to the pub. I do it regularly. But that is my choice. I appreciate yours is different.

I agree with your point if you are having a music session and TV is on it can be very infuriating and IMHO ignorant on the part of the host/publican.

Mind you I have a 2nd home in Spain and in many Spanish bars and restaurants it is not unusual to have three or four TVs running with as many different programs on at the same time - usually football.
Over in Spain it is the normal thing and is not through anyone being ignorant.

Of course there are bars where live music is played and the people watch and listen appreciatively. But they take some finding.

Cheers

Mike

I have a television -- an old one, not a flatscreen. I use it to watch DVDs and videotapes.

I haven't watched scheduled television since 1983. That was pre-cable and we only got three stations. I was watching mostly movies, "The Muppets", Jacque Cousteau documentaries, and "Masterpiece Theatre".

I was in the middle of watching "Brideshead Revisited" on Masterpiece Theatre when I found, no matter how many times that episode was scheduled during the week, that I just couldn't find time to watch it. I threw up my arms in disgust (figuratively) and both Tom and I stopped watching television completely.

More recently I've binge-watched several series on DVD -- "White Collar", "Boston Legal", "Big Bang Theory", "Rosemary & Thyme". Much nicer that way.

I've never watched sports because I have no interest in sports and neither did Tom (or my first husband, for that matter). I find televisions in pubs and restaurants to be really really annoying, even if I'm trying not to pay any attention to them. (Just the onscreen movement distracts from conversations.)

If telly contains sick jokes these days it must be going backwards. I thought sick jokes ended when creatures such as Bernard Manning were taken off the telly?

Mrs Musket and I record a few things and unwind in front of them later at night. She invariably works 13 hours a day so we don't eat til 8.00pm, leaving just enough time for, (at present..) Endeavour, Silent Witness, War & Peace, and when I'm out strutting me stuff she watches that midwife jobby.

Right now we are out skiing. Someone asked if we get any UK telly over here. I have to be honest, we spend a few weeks a year here in Tignes and have never turned the telly on yet.

OK, we watch Ski Sunday on my iPad.... They are recording the men's downhill from here later this week. I'll be the grinning idiot stood behind them as they commentate.

But I have owned 5 video recorders, & 4 TV cards for PC's in the last 20 years. Like all things: to avoid anything that is not harmful, completely, is extreme. TV is a time watser, but then lying on the beach using up your risk factor for melanoma is a time waster, but there are people with jobs that don't allow them to switch off fully day to day and swapping a week of oxytocin for all that cortisol is beneficial to life. Personbally I found other ways to top up on oxytocin but whatever works for you - like ceilidh dancing. TV is mental wallpaper mostly, but it can dilute that cortisol if you have too much.

"What's the difference between a nig nog and a Paki? A nig nog takes the plates out before pissing in the sink."

Yeah, far too subtle for an ignoramus like me. I obviously lack Akenaton's sense of humour. Mind you, how someone can say they don't watch it yet comment on the quality is beyond me. I think an unhealthy dose of prejudice helps eh?

By the way, why is it sometimes called a television "set" when there's only one of 'em? I have a chess "set" and it has 32 pieces plus a board.

I have to keep reminding my old mum there's no point banging the top of her TV these days if it's 'playing up'.

Btw.. every time I've had to go round her house to fix it, the problem has always been 'user error'.

For instance, using the wrong remote [for her CD/radio boom box] for days on end before she let me know there was a problem...

"... and I'm banging the top of the set, but it still won't work..."

Slicing the aerial cable in half [how the F did she do that !!!???] and sellotaping it back together..

".. I keep banging it but it still wont do anything..."..... 😣

Hi

I watched Liverpool match. I hate to have to agree with Steve over the off-side decision. It was extremely close but it did look offside to me.

Mind you compared with some of the off-side decisions I have seen this year it was controversial. The concern I have is that the decisions in many cases are so obvious that it defied belief that none of the match officials spot them.

Another point - the shirt pulling that hardly ever gets spotted. More like wrestling , especial for corners and free kicks into the area.
We at Man U have a bad example. Just watch Chris Smalling !!

And the stealing of yards especially at throw-ins. Last night Stoke were regularly doing it. Fer did get one of them.

Just one point of order for Michael....Liverpool is now not in Lancashire.

Cheers

Mike

I don't own a TV and never have. I'm not a snob; TV (and movies) just doesn't agree with my nervous system.

I have bad eyes, and I hate images that flash or move too fast. Once, at a Welsh Society meeting, they showed a video from the Welsh Tourist Board where images of mountains, castles, gardens, and harbors shot by in rapid succession. I couldn't stand to watch it. The content was beautiful, but for me the format was awful.

I have sensitive, damaged ears, and I found sudden loud noises and shrill voices painful. That eliminates the crime shows with gunshots and the comedies with squealing females.

I have also discovered that when watching movies, I tend not to breathe for long periods of time. Something about movies is bothering me deeply, but I don't know what it is.

I enjoy YouTube videos because they are short, because I can choose the content, and I can walk away at any time.

My elder son who lives in Altrincham and used to be in the County of
Cheshire., was "moved" into Trafford which is in Greater Manchester. They were not happy about "moving" out of Cheshire which has a higher status around here. In fact they refuse to have Trafford as part of their postal address and use Altrincham Cheshire.

In fact we used to live in Northwich Cheshire and without moving one inch we live in Chester West !!!

Still with me????

In 1970 or thereabouts, I ordered a miniature TV from Sears, thinking I would keep it on the closet shelf & only let it out when it promised to behave. Sears told me that that model had been discontinued, but it would sell me the next bigger one for the same price. It was too big for the shelf, so that was the end of that.

Somewhat earlier (1962?), I lived in a graduate dorm that had one in the lounge. It would snare me on the way to my room, but only until the first commercial came on. Even studying was better than that.

Historical fiction- the series based on Cornwells stories of Alfred and the Danes, his Sharp stories, etc.

Did you miss the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, Stargazing, The Story of Scottish Art, Stonehenge: a Timewatch Guide, Death Camp Treblinka: Survivor Stories, Winterwatch, Trust Me, I'm a Doctor?

All BBC, and the last six were all on last night...

The problem, as I see it, with TV, is the necessity to fill all the channels 24 hours a day, plus the multiplicity of channels. So, while there's still a good core of intelligent and watchable programmes, that core is surrounded by an immense amount of fluff. (But many people are attracted to fluff).

Classic television from the past like the Civilization series and Monitor stood more in isolation than sucj programmes would these days.

Now, back to Casualty... (I'll get me coat).

I was looking at a list of the weekly plays from 1964 to 79...absolute magic and great cast lists.

As said above these plays caused great discussion amongst ordinary folk.....As you probably know, I worked in the building trade, after watching "The Lump" a play concerning unprotected labour in the industry, I joined the Communist Party!
That's the sort of effect good drama can have on people. Right or wrong, it makes people think.

Whilst Mrs Musket and I wind down to bubblegum of a decent variety such as Silent Witness, Endeavour etc, I like to unwind to the gogglebox when I get in late after playing in clubs etc. The documentary quality, especially BBC is staggeringly good, and I reckon the government threat to clip the BBC wings could affect this treasure trove.

That said, it does amaze me how many homes you visit, the telly is a constant companion. We turn it on to watch something and then turn it off again. I doubt, F1, footy and cricket apart, that our tellies have been turned on during the day.

I'm not American or female or indeed a suspect, usual or special. Although I doubt I would learn something from anyone on the basis of being any of the above. What a strange odd post? I'm a non-fiction man on the whole, in spite of the bollix that I post here at times. ;-) Mind you, I get a fair bit of fiction on this website!

Steve: Something we do have in common, however much we may differ on some issues, is this inability to fill in the holes in the plots of so much tv drama. I genuinely think it isn't just us, it's writers vainly struggling for too much mystifying originality of effect who are to blame.

Which reminds me of a beef I have with contemp commercial channels:-

All these narrative ads, which seem to consist of a series of random and arbitrary 'happenings' & images, to me frequently add up to no comprehensible content whatever; often I can't even make out what·the·hell product is being 'advertised'!

Smartarse ad-agency pundits are taking over the world. Let us UNITE TO DEFEAT THEM, I say... Tho quite how I'm none too sure.

Back in the '70s, when children's telly was a couple of hours at teatime, there was a programme called "Why don't you turn off your television set and go and do something less boring instead." I think that was the title. It featured ideas of things to do (other than stand on street corners or lob bricks through the youth club window.)

There's irony for you.

Michael. I wouldn't worry. Probably not marketed at your particular sector...

I've found that not posting very often on Mudcat gives me more time to watch telly - and for all the other things I love, such as reading, writing, walking and volunteering for the Woodland Trust.

Back in the day, I used to watch television mainly for the commercials, which were mostly far superior to the programmes. Hardly surprising when you consider that it's where some great directors like Alan Parker, Ridley and Tony Scott, Nic Roeg, Richard Loncraine and others learned their craft - to say nothing of the superb British film technicians, editors and sound recordists. Nowadays most of the commercials are rubbish, with one or two gems, and the programmes have also deteriorated (is there a correlation?). Even so, amongst the interminable drivel of reality and talent shows, there are still some programmes I wouldn't want to have missed. It's part of being the well-rounded and well-adjusted person that I am :0

There's an intergalactic lawman by the name of Officer Bolix (wonderfully played by Werner Klemperer) who crops up in Irwin Allen's seminal 60s TV sci-fi Lost in Space (series one, episode 26 (!) : All that Glitters). Just the one L, but the cast have great fun pronouncing it as if it has two throughout.

Talking of big bollocks reminded to me address GfS's usual shite. I walk in the countryside. A lot. Where I go there is often no mobile signal anyway. I still enjoy the TV. More than ever now due to the plethora of choice via network devices. For some reason or another there are nutters like goofus who think that people who watch TV cannot do anything else.

On mainstream TV I am enjoying -

Endeavour (Just finished. Not going to watch 'Vera')
Jericho
Winterwatch
Midsummer Murders
Death in Paradise

On the net enjoying
Netflix 'Jessica Jones'.
Amazon 'Vikings'
Kodi via Raspberry Pi, any film that takes my fancy and
YouTube 'Have Gun Will Travel' :-)

Still find time to read, play music, enjoy the Grandkids, Walk, work, sleep and all sorts of other things:-)

Enjoy anything and everything - You only live once!

I don't watch a great deal of television but the recent airing of Immortal Egypt with Professor Joann Fletcher presenting was superb. Her enthusiasm for the subject is brilliant and possibly contagious. I can't be bothered with soaps, have no interest in the "property porn" am a good enough chef to be able to ignore the cooking shows, (although I do sometimes watch James Martin, again his enthusiasm is worth it) Football and Rugby Sport I will sometimes watch, however if crickets on it is difficult to get me away from the screen.

I dislike television in pubs with a passion. I've never quite figured out how a licensee can have television and a radio or jukebox playing at the same time. Beggars belief in my book. Frankly I can do without either of them. Jukeboxes being the spawn of the devil.

That decision was a horror. The pity is that a goal at that juncture must have had a terrible psychological effect on Everton. When a similar outrage happened to Liverpool the day before, at least the "goal" didn't turn the game. The players and the fans deserve better than these lousy decisions. They pay bloody good money to watch what should be well-run matches and the game is richer than Croesus. Let's have the technology.

Ahhhh, OK. were you referring to this "peace and depth of thought"

Just THINK(for a change) on how much you think you know.
IE, the peace that you induce with the confrontational "think for a change"?

Or was it the depth of thought that lets you state
how much you think you know...that you got from television, and the accumulation of fictionalized 'facts'!
In other words your assumption that other people all get their information from the TV?

Or maybe it was the fact that you seem to believe that no one who watches TV does anything else? As in
just for an experiment: Go out into the woods, or somewhere in nature, take a long walk,

The whole post was, in summary, the complete and utter shite I had it pegged as in the first place.

I'll tell you what. I'll agree to 'read and comprehend' what you write when you
a) Learn to address people you do not know in a reasonable manner
b) Stop making stupid assumptions and
c) Educate yourself in the correct use of the English language.

If you find that too complicated for your tiny mind I'll make it simple. Fuck off and don't come back until you know how to behave in decent company.

An almost 'nice' try to twist what I posted, but nonetheless a stupid post, Dave....so, I'll accommodate your lack of comprehension one more time.

Compare, that's all, JUST COMPARE, your state of mind, (if you can even remember what that is), with a peaceful walk in the woods, or a natural setting....then when you return to the house, flip on your T.V., and note the difference.

That's ALL...no need to ASS-ume anything beyond that!

Simple....and I'm not attacking you, though you may wish to ASS-ume otherwise!!

There are INSTINCTS, natural to humans, (and most all living creatures on the planet), whose natural instincts are made more prevalent in nature, than those, INDUCED by artificial stimulation.

Why should that be so hard to grasp???

As a side note: This is SUPPOSED to be a forum in which MUSICIANS give their views, and thoughts about various subjects. As a musician, you'd THINK(?) that you'd appreciate the THOUGHT(?) about someone reminding you, as a MUSICIAN, to stay in touch with our inherent instincts, instead of instantly turning a useful SUGGESTION, into some twisted, politically based SPIN SESSION.
OK??

Is that simple enough for you??
If not, see if you can ask a friend to help you understand it...or maybe you can ask your T.V.....

...or maybe take a quiet, peaceful walk in the woods, or a natural setting, and take some time to REFLECT!!

...you might even have a new tune pop into your head.

HI Dave

I read your earlier post and I have the same kind of choices as to when you watch and what you watch on TV.

One exception is that I like Vera. Watched it on Sunday night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think Brenda Blethyn is a great actress. Especially as I read today because she is now 69 years old she is unable to perform her old party trick. I quote " Brenda Blethyn , 69 said she used to be able to balance a pint of beer on her head and pick up a scarf on the floor without spilling a drop".

Surely any man could like a lady who could do that??

At our rugby club we had a guy who used to stand on his head and drink a pint of beer without spilling it. It had to be one of the old dimpled pots.

In that fine Play Mr Banglestein's Boys it showed a guy biting a pint pot and chewing the piece around in his mouth.

This was written by Colin Welland who played local rugby union and was better known in the 60's TV Police Drama Z Cars.

Cheers

Mike

Aye - I think Ms Blethyn is a fine actress but it is just something about Vera that I cannot get into. My Geordie mate reckons her accent is not right but that should not bother me, being a Manc! Maybe I should try again.

...and I knew a lad who's party piece was to down a pint in one and then eat the glass - Apart from the base! He had, as we used to say, no 'clack'. Dunno if he went on to become a circus performer or ended his days in A&E :-(

Hi Dave

We had a guy in our club who had no "clacker".

He didn't eat the glass but was very useful in that silly game called The Boat Race was inevitably played at some point during " drinks after the match".

It was ( and still is) a game of two teams all of whom hold a full pint of beer. The aim is to drink the beer a quickly as you can. The next player cannot start until the previous player finishes.

This player we had could down his pint almost as quick as quick as the eye could see. It was like pouring down a drain. When he played we rarely if ever lost.
"
Those were the days my friend..........."

Cheers

Mike

Regardless of anything else on this thread, everybody with access should be watching the current 12-hour American miniseries of "War and Peace."

Dave the Gnutt: "Nice to see you trying to emulate my 'can do better' though. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Although flattery from an idiot is not really anything to shout about. You are still not really getting the hang of this insult game are you? If anyone, apart from you, could understand what making panties into soup actually meant I suspect it may be mildly humourous but as it is, nah."

Don't flatter yourself with your delusions.........it's even unbecoming!

'Guest': ""Panties Soup" a recent short lived American Netflix sitcom concerning 2 aging 'working girls'
a pre op transgender retired construction worker, and a hetero sexual dragqueen, sharing an apartment next door to an extremist evangelical church.
Many a comical moment was promised around the washing machine and back yard clothes line.
I'm not surprised gfs referenced it as he is displaying a very keen knowledge of current trends in US TV."

Sorry, you're not as hip as you think you are.....the line was used in the 1979, Steve Martin comedy, 'The Jerk', when Steve says that to the father of the girl he was pursuing.

As usual, TV is a bit behind times.
You're just a little slow, and trying too hard to be politically hip.....but reality has it a different way.

....(and I'm being 'polite')

Stay tuned to our next exciting episode......

.. google the colloquial term 'panty soup'

Steve Martin - He's that old yank banjo player who used to be an intermittently funny comedian...???

"The Jerk" would have been one of his better moments... how long ago was that.....?????

As for being hip.. nah I've never been one for consciously quoting screen comedy highlights...

Had enough of dismal dullards doing that, growing up in the Nation that sired Monty Python and The Young Ones...

How many times can you sit in a pub listening to drunks performing the entire "Parrot" & "Argument" sketches.....😫

Btw... I do realise my limitations as a consistently creative writer.

Which is a self awareness a few of mudcat's more persistently prolific keyboard bashers would be well advised to come to terms with and accept gracefully....

I must admit now though, goofus. You have beat me. You win. There comes a time when everyone must realise that kicking shit only creates a stink and gets your shoes dirty. I have reached that moment and decided to stop doing it. Good luck down there.

I like Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin in Once Upon A Time. Especially when Carlyle is Full-On Rumple, with contact lenses, black fingernails, green face makeup, Commedia dell'Arte body language, and imitating .... who did he say? His six-year-old son's sing-songy voice. (His son who will turn ten years old this year)

OK....Now on your next walk in the woods, stop, sit down and think..and REFLECT.
I guarantee you that in what might be a moment of deeper thought, and introspection, will be more profound to you, than watching the 'news' covering the political campaigns...Compare those two moments.
That's all.

All the best to you, and Regards!!!

Thanks GfS. I do reflect very often, meditate regularly (on the last walk was by a flowing stream with nothing but the sound of running water and birdsong. Lovely) and I very rarely, if ever, watch the news. Especially news of anything political. So, to be honest, you are teaching your grandmother to suck eggs. As we seem to be in agreement may I make a suggestion? It is not so much what you say as how you go about it that rubs people up the wrong way. Reflect on how you talk to people on here and you may have your own profound realisation :-)

Guest from Sanity has done something of note, to be sure.
This thread was begun by Good Soldier Schweik whose tendency, whether you approve or disapprove, is to sink his teeth in and hang on, AND on, AND on, with terrier tenacity. We have seen him do it in thread upon thread.
Now Good Soldier Schweik has dusted off his hands and walked away from his very own thread, leaving somebody else to play Mudcat Terrier. I doubted that I would ever see the day, but here it is.

Dave: "It is not so much what you say as how you go about it that rubs people up the wrong way. Reflect on how you talk to people on here and you may have your own profound realisation :-)"

I do. It seems that no matter how or what I've posted, certain people on here, for one reason or another are geared to be confrontational... no matter how much good will and truth you throw out there. I believe that is because there is a predisposed disposition of some sort of political nonsensical toxins they have 'ingested'. When they do listen to the 'news', they don't listen to actually LEARN something, but rather reconfirm some notion that was sold to them, whether that notion is true or not...maybe by a 'friend', or whomever, and instead of incorporating something wider that could be useful to gain a greater perspective.
I could give you an example, but if anyone wants to 'follow up' on it I strongly suggest using another thread, because we don't want or need to divert this thread.
Here is ONE example: One the matter of homosexuality, I, and correctly so, disagreed with it being 'genetic', but DID point out that those who felt they were that way from birth, that it came from the formation of the nervous system, from a woman who had emotional issues with her mate, who impregnated her, and being as they share the same body, while forming, set up the receptors, and synapses to respond differently than those who did not. For that, I was labelled a 'homophobic'...and matter of fact, it was YOU who posted an article, completely supporting my position on that, saying, '..that there were OTHER(than genetic) factors' that cause the homosexual orientation. ...How is THAT homophobic????...........(like I said a forehand, we don't need to debate that here, on this thread..so let's not).

Frankly, I'm tired of political parties (BOTH) using lies and disinformation to get everyone emotionally stirred up, to ram another anti-social agenda, down our throats, while not giving a tinker's damn, whether it's true or not. The same is true with financial issues, taxation, foreign policies, (alleged WMD's as a reason to invade Iraq, with an unfunded war, only to bilk the public with astronomical fees, to service the effort, lying to the public about healthcare, while funneling masses of money to insurance corporations for them to profit, and the list goes on and on, 'alternative fuel sources was another.
Sure, we need a reformed healthcare system, sure, we need alternative fuel sources, but we get lied to and bilked and screwed...but the politicians, in bed with their corporate buddies, don't give a flying fuck. It's not been a history of our political systems representing the will of the people, but rather, FORCING the people to adopt fallacious 'remedies' for things that weren't a problem in the first place...other than solving one bit of corruption, with another bit of corruption!!

When you look objectively at it all, YES, it is time to reflect...reflect on what makes us all susceptible to buying into their horseshit, and really how far that is away, from those moments of PEACE, which can also be found, within us all.

As for me, I have not decided on ANY candidate, nor party to support, so I have no axe to grind about any of them, EXCEPT the ones who are fragrantly LYING through their teeth, and deceiving people, who for the most part, are caring people.

Anyway, post is long enough. We can always turn on our T.V.'s and listen to them lie about everything, till we're all so confused, we don't know who's coming and going.

Meanwhile, we can measure, and define the angst, and compose musical portraits that the inner soul of mankind can can identify with, and benefit from.....and do so, HONESTLY!!

I completely agree with you on the point of politicians and their corporate puppet masters and have always said so. As I said earlier, it is not necessarily the content of what you post but the way it is presented. If you cannot get support for what is a good idea then either it is not a good idea, you are asking the wrong people or you are not putting it across well enough. Ask yourself which it is.

I'm old enough to remember television without music videos. Life without music videos, rather. If the television is on, and those videos turn up, it's time to change the channel. The music videos only work for me if the music stands by itself. And a lot of times, the video seems to be the main deal, and the music is little more than a video soundtrack.

I guess music videos have shifted a lot of units in the music business, though, so the almighty dollar has the last word.

Today is the day of the big game in America - the Superbowl, where the two top football teams play for the championship.

And all America is buzzing about the most interesting part - the commercials, especially the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial. One woman told a reporter, "I have my kleenex ready."

It's worth going on YouTube to watch them. Your grandkids will like them, too.

Good imagery, good story, not loud and one minute long. That's my kind of television.

Hi

Yesterday here we had a terrible day for weather. No chance of me and "her indoors" getting outdoors.....so

We watched TV. We watched Bournemouth V Arsenal, then change channel to watch Ireland V Wales in the 6 Nations Rugby Union,

Back to sky to watch Chelsea v Manchester United.

Our sport appetite satisfied we watched Countryfile. Ummmm could smell the fresh air. Then over to watch Vera solve a very delicate and intricate case.

Not fodder to create dinner party conversations perhaps.

We both enjoyed it and it certainly created comments and discussion between us.

Now what's on tonight ??? Weather forecast looks interesting.....lol

Cheers

Mike

Well, over here, soap operas were big for daytime 'entertainment'...but they've evolved....now it's political pundits spouting about polls that are designed to steer the elections!!
.....but it's still has the 'allure and suspense' of a soap opera!!
Frankly, re-runs of 'Black Adder' are far more entertaining!!
