In the Mudcat café I met the strangest pseudonyms. What do they mean and why did you pick this particular one? Will Bakker (sounds strange, but is my real name)

Iv'e just been reading through the old thread and noticed a couple of changes which I found ammusing as the nicknames on the top of the posts have altered. Banjo Bonnie is explaining why she chose the name Little Neophyte and Margo is explaining why she can not use Margo and has to use Margarita.

People seem to think my pseudonym is a cover for my real name, but really it's been a nickname I've had for about 7 years. People in the real world actually call me this, so why not on Mudcat? :{>

Lets change the thread to:

What pseuedonyms have you used while doing illegal, nefarious or simply clandestine acts like STEALING SOMEONE'S SONG? (i.e. Paul Calpbell and the Weavers.)

And describe any of your othewr acts that mandated your new name.

Art

Well Art, although I've never stolen any songs, I have used pseudonyms at times to save myself from the embarrassment of being identified while playing truly AWFUL musical engagements.(gotta bring some folk music into this thread)

I was "Kent St.Clair" while playing the Howard Johnson's in St. Petersburg Fla.
"Les Richards" during a tour as bass player with a fucking awful duo, a husband and wife team who played guitar and COCTAIL DRUM...He wore a Davey Crockett fringed outfit and she STRIPPED!! at the end of every set! If anyone thinks I'm making this up, you shouda been in Northern Ontario during the seventies. Damn rent had to be payed!

Gee, Art - in one of his books, Pete Seeger said the Weavers used "Paul Campbell" as a pseudonym to represent the whole group, when they had written a song together. What songs shouldn't they have claimed as their own? How was their practice any different from the other folk artists of the era, who claimed copyrights for anything and everything?
-Joe Offer-
P.S. I don't know if I want to admit to knowing anybody who used "Kent St. Clair" as a stage name. A bit pretentious, one might say....

I am because I do. That isn't a pseudonym, it's a nickname and there is a difference. I've never tried to register anything with a pseudonym, except during a school competition where everyone had to be anonymous, to make it fairer. I was Harrieta Little. I won the singing competition with a rendition of the 'Love Story' theme, and had to sing in front of the whole school, who universally hated me......

Actually Joe, re: the Weavers. It WASN'T a whole lot different than numerous other folk groups. We just though they should be a bit purer. Bob Gibson (a hero of mine) claimed authorship on many songs that were very similar to those written by actual living composers (Like Libba Cotton)

Yeah "Kent St.Clair" WAS a bit pretentious...but the hotel loved it. Needless to say it was my idea of a joke, cause I hadda wear a suit and tie for the gig.

There are a couple of (pseudo) folk albums out there with the designation: Lead guitar: Lance D. Boyle. I'll never give anymore info though! (it was a union thing)

Once played at a party where the revelers danced to Mary Hamilton which I played on a mountain dulcimer. Wish I had used a pseudonym then.
