Me too Bonzo! I've already looked out my collection of flags, which I'll attach to various parts of the front of my bungalow. And our village is having a Jubilee Picnic outside the village hall on the actual day. (Wonder if there'll be any crumpets?)
I think the dear Queen has shown such courage, a deep sense of duty and
complete integrity all her long life.
How hard it must be for her to surmount the sorrow of losing her adored husband.

She's remarkable all right. Her "work" consists of travelling in absolute luxury, never having to mix with the riffraff in shops, hospitals, etc., waving at adoring plastic-flag-waving crowds (behind barriers), making one speech per annum (written by somebody else), catching at least six colds per annum which get her off doing her duties, watching horses and soldiers from a very comfy seat, being cosseted by hordes of servants, patting people with a sword, shaking hands (gloved) with various fawning dignitaries, stroking her corgi (not a euphemism) and never having worry about her heating or food bills. Naturally, she does have to put up with her dysfunctional and idiotic family, but hey ho. We all have our crosses to bear, and like her, might even occasionally have to endure an anus horribilis...

While I shall enjoy the celebrations etc. I still feel that the monarchy is an anachronism and has run its course. I agree with Steve that the queen (and other members of the royal family) enjoy a remarkably luxurious, pampered and privileged life.
Once the queen has passed away, I'd be glad to see the whole structure dismantled and the end of royalty declared. But I still admire the lady for her faithfulness to her duty.

Me too, Sen. Whilst I don't 'hate' the RF with the same degree of venom as Steve, I believe they are an anachronistic part of The Establishment, completely out-of-touch with the hoi-polloi, and serving very little purpose other than to appear as the 'public face' of the UK on ceremonial occasions, and to be used as a convenient distraction when this greedy, self-serving, and incompetent government is trying to cover up its own surreptitious activities.

My own preference would be for the UK to follow the Irish model by becoming a republic with an elected president whose function is purely ceremonial, and who holds no political power or even a political role.

Sadly, I don't expect that to happen within my lifetime.

We Canadians quite enjoy the monarchy because it saves us the hassle of presidential politics as observed chez our neighbour to the south, and we don't have to pay for it.

We do have to stump up for the Governor-General, but Rideau Hall and all its trimmings (including the Occupant) would be cheap at twice the price compared to the alternative.

We are much too close to the United States in both geography and culture to manage conversion to an Irish-style non-political presidency, alas. Would that we were!

Yes, despite the winters, Canada is a great place to live and we like it. Oddly, Her Maj is part of all that; with the Crown at the top of the heap, we have a critical element in our power structure that isn't primarily focussed on grubbing for attention and grabbing control. It's relaxing.

Yes, I’ve gathered from my wife’s brother, just up the road from you in Burlington, that HMQ is still a big cog in the Canadian machine (he’s a huge royalist, being ex-armed forces (U.K.), ex-U.K. police, and a serving Tronno PD officer).

I may have mentioned before that we visited the Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford ON, in 2015 to see their production of ‘Henry V’ - a nice theatre in lovely surroundings, a great day out.

I don't know ... this latest royal visit - Charles and Camilla in Canada, that is - is finally putting me off the whole monarchy thing. I've been switching to American news the last few nights to avoid the stomach-churning sight of all the fawning and gushing. While I do like the ambiguity of our Constitutional Monarchy, the idea of having any future governmental figures or new citizens swearing loyalty to the Windsors seriously rubs me the wrong way. I'd like to maintain some kind of vague connection to the Crown, but as for the Royals - I've had quite enough of them, thank you.

That is a rather romanticised view of our country, Joe. The reality is that the Queen and her hangers-on represent the summit of unearned and undeserved privilege. They are generally pretty impregnable to any attacks on their wealth. They give back only what their consciences, or fear for their public image, dictates. The Queen volunteered to pay tax after decades of not doing so. I wish I could do that. Amazon and Google have nothing on the royals when it comes to tax avoidance. The upshot is that they are fabulously wealthy, owning a number of palaces and country estates, the latter largely dedicated to keeping the land fit for brainless shooting parties, an unmitigated environmental disaster. Charles owns huge tracts of the Westcountry (where I live) and profits immensely from the efforts of those who work his land while he fiddles, making vacuous speeches about the environment and architecture and revelling in the fake joys of homeopathy. He cheated on Diana, conducting his affair with the charmless and personality-bereft Camilla right up to his wedding with Diana. And now this paragon is the man we are expected to embrace as our beloved King, God save him. The Queen is wise enough to keep her head down and her mouth shut, but for all her wealth and advantage she has managed to produce a family of entitled complete misfits who marry and occasionally divorce other misfits who will all, without doubt, continue to produce even more misfits. Naturally, our media treads carefully around them. If only the hordes of people who love the royals could see through the whole shebang. Nicholas Witchell and the Daily Mail will always see to it that they don't...

I well remember my mother telling me "The King is dead!" and then watching the ensuing Coronation on a tiny little black-and-white (of course!) TV at a neighbour's house, together with lots of TV-less neighbours.
And I've met Prince Philip at Edinburgh University (an arrogant prat!). My father had to meet Princess Margaret at Kensington Palace to arrange telephone systems, and she was appallingly frosty, rude and arrogant too. He refused to bow (hee hee) and when she tried to 'inform' him about how to set up telephone systems he cheekily asked her why she'd summoned him (West London Area Manager for the GPO) if she already knew all about it.
It's this entitlement which irks me. Nobody is 'above' anyone else in that sense, just because of their birth. It's wrong. Never would I curtsy to another human being.

By the way, I absolutely adored the Canadians I met in 1967 (I went over for Expo 67 in Montreal, then stayed with my Irish auntie & uncle in London Ontario). The Canadians were charming, friendly, kind, and invited me to their lakeside cabins for short stays etc. (I've swum in every one of the Great Lakes!)

Seems to me, Joe, that the argument that the royals are a big tourist draw pops up in most threads about them. It simply isn't true and I won't recycle the facts all over again here. Suffice to say that few if any of the top tourist attractions have any direct link with the royals ("league tables" are available), and the truly historical monuments such as the Tower of London and Hampton Court wouldn't suffer as tourist draws even if the royals were disbanded.

By hiring armies of accountants to avoid tax. By putting their wealth offshore. By exploiting extremely indulgent inheritance arrangements. By making sure that politicians are in their pockets. In anglophone Canada, the Spring statutory holiday is called Victoria Day (once Empire Day), and scheduled for the Monday next before 24 May, the birthday of Queen Victoria. In Quebec, the same holiday is called Le jour des patriotes in honour of the rebels of 1837-38.

Across the country, whatever language is spoken or culture perpetuated, that holiday is *actually* the official start of Fun Outdoors, observed by mobbing all garden centres, opening summer cottages, camps and cabins, and drinking beer on the porch, the patio, the deck, the front steps, the back steps, or any other external spot not forbidden by liquor licensing legislation or neighbourhood opinion.

I've just heard that at our Village Jubilee Picnic (in the grounds of the village hall) there will be a 'decorated wheelbarrow competition'! You decorate your wheelbarrow with some sort of patriotic and colourful creations, and everyone will join a 'wheelbarrow parade' around the venue. Sounds like great fun to me. I've got a wheelbarrow, and I'm thinking about how I could decorate it effectively. (Not to win exactly, but to join in the fun)

Well, most of us in this village have put our flags up. Some people have giant flagpoles and huge Union Jacks, others strings of smaller flags.
I've got medium-sized ones sprouting out of the honeysuckles on either side of the front door, and smaller ones attached to the windowsills as well.
Husband is going to attend the Jubilee event with me on Thursday, in the grounds of the village hall, wearing one of his lovely, brightly-coloured traditional outfits (long tunic over narrow trousers).
I think the entire village will be delighted to see him!

Well, Nigel, I've been a member of my trade union for fifty years. In my union, and in all others (with extremely limited exceptions), leaders (presidents, general secretaries, members of the executive, etc.) are elected, typically via postal votes of union members. In contrast, I don't recall being asked to vote for any member of the royal family nor for any of their extensive entourage, even though I have to contribute to their upkeep. Just thought I'd mention it.

I see both sides of the debate over the value of the monarchy.
When I think of the queen, I remember her as an ambulance driver in WWII and scaring some Arab potentate by driving him herself in her Landrover.
(He wasn't used to ANY woman driving).
But, sure..I see why many feel the the money and pomp attending the monarchy is antiquated and needs to be converted into something simpler. I'll bet it would make Brexit seem simple to adopt by comparison.

Anyway, it is all 'interesting' from an outsiders viewpoint... and my own ancestry is rooted in English & Scottish history.

I still feel that the monarchy is an anachronism, and ought to be 'disbanded' after this Jubilee doo-dah.
I well remember watching the queen's coronation on a tiny black-and-white TV set (neighbour's house, we didn't have a TV then) But my attitude has changed, and I think the enormous privilege the royals enjoy, merely because of their birth, is antiquated nowadays. Our leaders/representatives etc should be democratically elected.
The weather is glorious this morning, and I am looking forward to our village hall activities, plus seeing my husband again, in his African outfit. (He's coming over at 10am) There will apparently be a 'Scone Pop-Up Stall' (why no crumpets eh?) and the much-publicised Decorated Wheelbarrow competition.

What disturbs me is that anti-monarchist arguments are, all too often, not concerned with making life better for anyone, but making it worse for a handful of people who for historical reasons, neither merit nor fault of their own, find themselves in a privileged position. Levelling down doesn't necessarily lead to levelling up.

Like Bill D, I can see both sides. However, for the last couple of centuries the monarchy has (mainly) worked well, and my inclination is to follow the principle of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I agree the monarchy is an anachronism. It is a privileged life, but also one of extraordinary constraints. The Queen is personally wealthy (although not wealthy enough to appear in the Top 250 of the Sunday Times Rich List) but has comparatively little freedom to enjoy it. It seems a cruel thing to do to a family.

On the other hand, it is unclear whether republics fare any better than monarchies. There is an argument that monarchies provide greater stability, but probably there are too many other variables to draw any proper conclusions. What is certain is that an elected head of state, even one with a purely ceremonial role, is inevitably a political figure to some degree.

It is true the British monarch is not elected by the people. Nevertheless her powers are mostly exercised through the elected parliament.

The impact of the cost of the monarchy is exaggerated. The Sovereign Grant in 2020-21 was £85.9m, equivalent to £1.29 per person. Of that, £34.4m was for the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace, which is owned by the Crown ie the state, not the Queen personally. It is a publicly-owned asset. The core cost is equivalent to 77p per person. The Sovereign Grant is paid from income from the Crown Estate (with the remainder going to the Treasury), not from general taxation.

Of course a stripped-down head of state could cost less to run. The Irish presidency costs only €5m, on the other hand Denmark's costs €80m and Poland's €115m. It is difficult to know if this is comparing like with like. £85.9m is a large sum, but compared with total public expenditure of over £1 trillion it is a drop in the ocean. It is legitimate to debate how public money is spent, but it is naïve to think that saving a few million here or there will make any difference to anything.

Of course it is entirely legitimate to want a republic, but polls have consistently shown that the overwhelming majority don't support it. Personally I am content with what we have. That may be in part due to the current Queen, who on the whole has done a remarkably good job of adapting the role to changes in society. It remains to be seen how well Charles will do (I suspect better than his critics believe) but the institution is greater the than the individual holding it. Nevertheless it must continue to adapt, and that probably means reducing the roles of the wider Royal Family.

The Queen has several vast and luxurious residences. She travel in cosseted luxury, hang the expense. OK, so suppose we had an elected president. That role would still need to be funded. They would need accommodation, staff, travel expenses, the cost of official functions, etc etc. That cost would fall on the state, regardless of the incumbent's personal wealth, or lack of. That is what the Sovereign Grant covers - the costs of carrying out the role of head of state. It is not for the Queen's personal expenditure, that comes from her private resources.

Of course these costs could possibly be reduced, but that has nothing to do with monarchy v republic. Some monarchies run very modestly, some presidencies cost far more than our Royal Family. It all depends on what the nation wants and expects from its head of state. The majority of British people seem to enjoy a bit of spectacle and flummery.

I think it's a bit mean to put on a big concert as a sort of present for a lady aged 96 and load it with material and performances she's pretty certain to dislike.

I have avoided it myself, and I'm sure that would have been her preference.

I haven't watched any of these celebrations. If others enjoy it, that's fine by me, but I have been off visiting family , on walks, etc etc etc.

Because my son lives around 4 hours drive away, I have travelled through a fair few towns and villages in the past week and have been struck by how little sign there is of anything happening. You see little knots of houses where five or six together are festooned in flags and bunting, then great stretches of nothing at all. Anecdotally, there seems to be more in shops than private houses. We drove through one village where it seems the (parish?) council had decided a celebration was needed and there was a large flag on every other lamp post - quite literally - but that was very much the exception.

By comparison, when England was in the world cup recently, I would say there were far more individual houses decorated. Still not a majority, but more than 20% I would estimate. Currently, it seems to be in the 1% region based on my travels.

Not a lot happening up here north of the border. City of Edinburgh Council did publish a list of street closures for street parties: only about 10 in the whole metropolis of “greater Edinburgh”. There’s a free concert on in Princes St Gardens this afternoon, but this was only announced earlier in this last week.
We were out celebrating on Friday night, but this was the 50th anniversary of our local rugby club: should have been in 2020, but twice postponed because of Covid. The church minister who said grace before the meal did conclude with “God save the Queen”.
As for last night, we didn’t survive long at the Jubilee concert. Soon switched over to other channels, mainly BBC ALBA, where you could watch in black-and-white! Fyfe Robertson (remember him?) doing a documentary on a visit to the Western Isles: whisky galore an a’ that!

Just caught up with the "highlights" of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant and, if there was any Morris- or clog-dancing, the BBC producer/editor decided not to reshow it. And the closest thing to folk music was Ed Sheeran's folk-pop. In modern England's multicultural diversity, the default culture that people come together with for such events is NOT English but American culture, very sadly.

If you believe me/have been able to see it, how do the U.S. citizens on this thread feel about that?

Harry will be US president, so he won't be able to make it either.

So the Caesium Jubilee will have her maj at the helm...and the whole show will be run by...

Well. I was at Imperial College at the same time as Brian May. I think that he's a superb rock guitarist and I think he and he alone has earned the right to decide on his axes. As a Girl Guide (and before that, a Brownie) I was instructed about the correct way up of the flag. Then, as a teacher, I always had one in my classroom (up the right way of course).
I don't think schools nowadays cover anything about the patron saints, different flags which make up the Union Jack etc.
My husband had to learn all this to pass his Life In The UK test when applying for British Citizenship. Fortunately, I could teach him and he passed.

I've worn hearing aids since 2012, Kevin. For a couple of years they got me through in sessions, but more and more I found myself all at sea and it was so upsetting that when I finally decided to pack in the sessions it turned out to be a blessed relief. My main way of trying to be a good session player had been to focus on someone who had a great sense of rhythm and tempo and secretly "play along" with them. Eventually, once the banjos, the strummers and the pickers moved in, I was lost. It's all good, I'm much happier than I was when I was trying to struggle on, and I can still noodle away with the tunes at home.

As for bodhran players, I can't count the number of times I've seen a strummer or melody player who doesn't know the current tune pick up their drum instead and begin to bash. Well if a tune started up that I didn't know I'd shut up and listen to it and try to get it in my head. There's no shame in not playing all the time. If you don't know the tune, you shouldn't be playing the drum along with it. No-one else can do that, can they? "Oh, it's a reel, and I can play along with any reel...". Bollocks!

The problem with most percussion tuition, is that the tutor thinks it is just about teaching patterns of rythym, it is not. , teaching patterns is useful for requiring competence with the tipper or sticks, but the percussionist should sing the tune when practising, and play the tune not a rythym pattern,
example if i was bashing an old goat skin and singing god save the queen, i would need to bang differently from if i was playing singing god bless the prince of wales even though they are both marches

I've got a D/G Erica too. Mine is rather battered and 2 treble notes are reduced to single reed. I got mine for Morris dancing but I dropped that and the box in favour of an Irish session I found and mandolin/tenor banjo. I still get my Erica out occasionally but, while I can get some simple Morris tunes out of it, I never got to a stage where I could use it in an Irish session.

I got a B/C box fairly recently as I'd long fancied a try with one. I started with good intentions but it's dropped to somethng I really must put an effort into one day.. I think if you have played tunes in the given key on a harmonica (in my case I had a couple to play with for a while in childhood), playing the straight rows on a D/G instrument will feel quite familiar. Playing say a D scale on a B/C just seems weird to me at the moment.

That's it, Dick. Bashing your drum when you don't know the tune is like a cook pouring chicken gravy on top of a strawberry trifle: "It's only food so what more do you need?"

I'd make a bit of a distinction between bodhrans in sessions (unregulated in general) and bodhrans in bands that play arrangements. Yer drummer is then obliged to conform with what the band has agreed. A drum that dips in and out (like other instruments) can be much more effective than one that is tediously bashed non-stop all the way through. Even so, I'm not keen. A few albums in, one of my favourite Irish bands, Altan, started to use a bodhran player, Jim Higgins I think. To my taste (an important caveat...), not one set was enhanced by that. Another grumble is bodhranistas who have become so "clever" that they can make the drum sound like water glugging out of a bottle or like that thing you can do when you pat your cheek whilst opening and closing your mouth. I won't name names. To my ear that's just ridiculous. I'll take Christy in Planxty or Kevin Conneff in the Chieftains over that any day.

On Thursday 2 June, the special extended version of the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony, the first day of the Bank Holiday weekend, was watched by a peak of 7.5M in the morning and 5M average – the most-watched of the day. Later that evening, the BBC’s broadcast of the lighting of the beacons to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne hit a peak of 5M with Lighting up the Jubilee.

Meanwhile on Saturday morning, the Platinum Jubilee: Service of Thanksgiving was viewed by 2.8M over three hours in the morning while just over 3M tuned in for Clive Myrie-led documentary The Crown Jewels.

Shows were available on the BBC and coverage was on Sky News, while U.S. audiences were able to watch various offerings on ABC News throughout the Bank Holiday.

Well Bonzo, if I was (sort of) to go into a WAV mode, I might comment that Pantone is a proprietary American colour (or color) system. "Truly British" might have tried to pick a purple from one of the British Standard ranges.

As for purple and royalty. I've seen quite a few people in a shade purple lately. These are people from a Norfolk Council service who have helped getting dad to bed while we are stuck. Hard working carers rather than Royalty. Personally, I'd rather associate the colour with the Swift/Night Owl teams that I would with HM.

Nowt wrong with celebrating English culture as long as you know that all cultures are fluid, evolving creature. Not museum pieces from some mythical rose coloured past. Which past would you choose anyway? Victorian times when we enforced "our" culture on half the world? Pre Norman because you don't want French influence? Pre Roman? It's impossible to have the pure English culture that you keep waffling on about WAV. I get where you’re coming from, Steve, but I do find the spectacle of large groups of smartly-turned-out, well-trained men, women, and animals (especially horses, which I regard as being particularly beautiful creatures), performing intricate manœvres, and the superb musicianship of the assembled military bands, both interesting and attractive.

However, and like you, I have little interest in the over-privileged family in whose name it was all carried out.

England was a blend of cultures from all over the British empire, WAV, and even prior to that it was far more diverse than you suggest. Have you seen, just as an example, the celebration of the African influence as part of the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian's Wall? People have been mixing cultures with wherever they could travel to since the first caveman showed the tribe in the next valley how he hunts, plants and dances. Your view on keeping cultures to their own geographic areas is not only wrong but has never worked and never will.

There is no such thing as "English" culture. Full Stop.

The "English" are a bastard race mixed up from, amongst others, Celts, Romans, Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Normans, Jews from various nations (for example Italy in the 12th century) Germans, Belgians, Huguenots, Afro and Afro Carribean, Irish, Poles, Czechs, Ukraines, Pakinstan, India, China, Kenya, Uganda, Scots, Welsh. (and probably dozens of other groups I have failed to mention)

The culture of the country quite rightly reflects this.


If anyone can find me an "English" man I'll show my bum in Burtons window as we used to say

QE 2 is 2+ years shy of breaking Louis XIV's all time monarch anywhere reign record (though he was young and didn't take over control for a dozen years or so). Do you think she'll make it to that point? (I read this online and I don't remember where - I don't know if they took into account any of the Asian emperors reigns.)

Raggytash, nearly all my ancestors date back hundreds of years in England ,one exception that arrived on my fathers maternal side arrived in 1871,[ 150 years ago] however i choose not to ,live in England, I am not a monarchist, and understand that culture is an evolving phenomenon that is the result of influences of travel and immgration
