Just in case you missed this news ... Joni Mitchell did a set yesterday at Newport Folk Festival - first for 7 years after her aneurism ... she sat down for the performance (except once when she played electric guitar, when she stood but leaned against the piano), and was surrounded/supported by fellow singers and players - but clearly enjoyed herself. Much feedback (including links to videos) here (on the Steve Hoffman Music Forum) if interested: Joni Mitchell performs at the Newport Folk Festival 2022 - yes, you read that ri Her principal "support" on the day being Brandi Carlile on vocals.

She has become a true diseuse à voix.
Her voice exists in an entirely different octave than it used to do.

It had already dropped pretty low by "Shine" from my recollection (2007) ... these things happen over a lifetime!

192 comments (8 pages) thus far on the Steve Hoffman thread to which I posted a link yesterday ... I would have thought 'catters might have a little more to say on this as well, but maybe them's the breaks... for myself Joni has been a companion and inspiration in some form for more than 50 years, fantastic to see her still there and able to convey her spirit (and raised up by the love of supporters) after being unable to walk or speak just 7 years ago...

2007 Mitchell's speaking voice is a little husky, and her singing voice has noticeably altered over the years, losing the high end and modulating into a sensuous alto, but she blames age rather than tobacco. "I have smoked since I was nine, so obviously it didn't affect my early work that much."

Hard to watch that without some happy tears that she's made this recovery. She was the voice of my generation in many ways.

It's astounding that she worked so hard to become the Joni we all knew, then DID IT AGAIN. Brandi is great for her role in getting Joni to Newport. I also think many of us shared Wynona's apparent reactions.

From CBS Mornings. I needed a hanky for this one. Seeing her in the mid-70's, with Pat Metheny on guitar, was a game changer for me.
