Joni Mitchell was born this day (7th November) in Canada in 1943.

I think she is the 'dog's bonkers'.

Don't forget folks, it's also the birthday of non-folk singers/musicians Peter Noone (of Herman's Hermits), Sharleen Spiteri (lead singer of the band Texas), trumpeter Al Hirt and singer/guitarist Johnny Rivers today... and singer Howard Keel died this day two years ago.

Aaarrrggghh! It must be catching - help!

:-)

And the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, 7 November 1917 (New Style). Remember the Bolsheviks? If not, then go listen to The Song of the Old Communist by Leon Rosselson for a quick history lesson.

She may live in the states, but its nice to know that she is one of ours. I remember her as Joni Anderson as well.

I don't know if I would be such a huge fan if she appeared for the first time today. However, in the seventies, she was one of the most stunningly original purveyors of the personal song. Her melodies were unusual and her lyrics full of rare insights. Her first five or six albums were rarely off my turntables. Without doubt she had genuine integrity. Her jazz music went over my head. I suspect that was my fault rather than hers. I wish her Happy Birthday along with everyone else though. I think her songs "The Circle Game", "Cactus Tree" and "Both Sides Now" are going to be around for a long time.

I hired a cab to take me from confusion to the plane,
And though we shared a common space I know we'll never meet again.

Her birthday was actually yesterday, according to the Daily Telegraph.

If you've ever wondered what the fuss is about, like, Big Yellow Taxi, big deal, please take the trouble to listen to her first album: Song to a Seagull
It is a thing of wonders.

She and Leonard Cohen showed up on the pop radar at around the same time.   Both of them gave sensitive, smart kids a little hope, and something to strive for creatively.

>>I don't know if I would be such a huge fan if she appeared for the first time today.

Why is that?

I would guess that if Joni Mitchell had been born in say 1980 but had had the same compulsion to write paint and do all the stuff she's done (which she might or might not have done but that's a different thread), then she would have still have had something to say but it's unlikely that it would have been in the same style.

I have a sneaking suspicion though she would probably still have been an excellent artist. Might not have had bare feet or played a dulcimer - or slapped a guitar because the action was so bad and it was the only thing she could play in Matala - but I think she would still have done some good stuff. She might have been a rap artist who knows?

Smiles... I don't think she would have been unmusical enough to do rap in any age!

I agree about the first album - I'm glad to say I bought an import copy of that when it first came out (before it was available in the UK), having heard a single track on the radio and ordered it. Unlike many albums I've bought since on the strength of hearing a single track, I was definitely not disappointed! But IMO she has done a lot of good stuff since then, but like many artists, there's some not-so-good among it all. Almost inevitable with someone who's been around that long and made so many records.
