Hi Skarpi,
I would be interested depending on where and when.

I have been to Eurogatherings in the Hull, UK; Niort France; Cork, Ireland; Kiel,Germany; and, of course, with you in Iceland in 2010. It would be nice to visit a new place.

Hey, Giok!

I was just beginning to play the mandolin back then, learning my first tune sets. The cows were a kind, patient audience.

That was more than eighteen years ago. Shaking my head …

I remember trying to pay for our dinner in Muenster, breakfast in Hull, boat trips at Niort and Kiel, missing out on Brussels for not reading my ticket properly and arriving for the tail-end of Selby ...

Eric says Orkney is nearby (maybe he lives in the north of Scotland) but would his dialysis requirements be accommodated in a trip to Orkney? I had a short visit there once and even just on the main island there are an amazing amount of archaeological sites to visit. I was fortunate that the Ness of Brodgar dig was on during my visit. It looks like the next and last chance to visit while excavation is in session will be next summer 24 June - 23 Aug 2024:https://www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk/visit/

I didn't come across any folk and traditional music scene though I know of a few musicians from the Orkney Islands - the Wrigley Sisters come to mind immediately - and there is an annual folk festival. The island geography is more lush than I expected.

Hi all. I live in Aberdeen. I am not really able to do much for which I am very sorry. I remember the fun Skipjack and I had with the gathering at Barton on Humber many years ago. I only 'know a few folkies as I am not long resident here.

Orkney would be a wonderful place for a gathering. Boat from either: Aberdeen, Gills Bay or Scrabster.Fly by various routes to Kirkwall airport. ( Prices variable but not cheap).

I am on dialysis 3 days a week and have other health problems so helping out is difficult. I often but not regularly play ay Aberdeen folk club and a session in the "Northern Bar" Aberdeen.

If you do manage a gathering, I would hope to be able to get there for some of it.

Best wishes.

I'd prefer a place that is easier to reach - the more steps (airplane/bus/train/boat) in the journey the more risk that something goes wrong (missed connection ...)

But as I am only audience, not musician, I won't insist ...

Are there any Mudcatters in Aberdeen or Stonehaven willing to act as hosts? If not, who is going to organise the event?

IIRR there's never been a Eurogathering in Scotland.

There have been at least two Mudgatherings in Scotland:- Invershin in October 2007 and Rosehall in October 2008, both organised by John MacKenzie.

Sometime around 12-14 July?

In the past, Eurogatherings were in May, if I remember rightly.

well, maybe we should let David the Gnome organise Skipton for mid-May (second weekend) because no one else is offering to organise a UK Mudgathering (and accommodation for a group would be more difficult to get in July). Among the "umpteen" folk events on the May bank holiday is Scandimoot (workshops in Scandinavian music and dance) in Clapham, north Yorkshire/Lancashire about 25 miles northwest of Skipton.

And why not Aberdeen? .... Or Stonehaven with its festival tradition?

Are there any Mudcatters in Aberdeen or Stonehaven willing to act as hosts? If not, who is going to organise the event?

IIRR there's never been a Eurogathering in Scotland.

There have been at least two Mudgatherings in Scotland:- Invershin in October 2007 and Rosehall in October 2008, both organised by John MacKenzie.

Sometime around 12-14 July?

In the past, Eurogatherings were in May, if I remember rightly.

We seem to have acquired a "2023" in the thread title. It's a bit late to organise anything for this year :-)

Next year's early May bank holiday in the UK is Monday, 6 May 2024, so that would make the weekend Friday 3rd to Monday 6th.

The island geography is more lush than I expected.

so who volunteers to organise something? Eric, have you got some folky friends who could co-organise with you, people who live near(ish) the venue?

Dave, be a bit more patient! I think I'm the only one who spoke up for Scotland. A better alternative may emerge. What about, say, Whitby after Folk Week? Anyone there to organise it?

The Monday after Folk Week is always the August Bank Holiday Monday

well, maybe we should let David the Gnome organise Skipton for mid-May (second weekend) because no one else is offering to organise a UK Mudgathering (and accommodation for a group would be more difficult to get in July). Among the "umpteen" folk events on the May bank holiday is Scandimoot (workshops in Scandinavian music and dance) in Clapham, north Yorkshire/Lancashire about 25 miles northwest of Skipton.
