Try Northern California, off of I70, a major trucking route. Here's a Mapquest page that shows Quincy and Oroville.

yippee! I will hope for this to come together-
any suggestions would be appreciated...I will
reserve the campgrounds-they are quite rustic
and reasonably priced. Details to follow. PM
me with any questions or comments...I can also
invite old time fiddlers and folk society members.
bring friends! Pot luck! There is lots of elbow
room there, with pine trees and it is in the
place which was the historic home of the Concow
tribe, a sub-tribe of the Maidu Nation. About 5
hours from Santa Cruz, 10 hours from Portland.
Just down the canyon from Reno. Laurel

If someone has camping gear to share, I'm close enough (Sacramento) to make it easy to haul up water or food.

I would really love to make the scene, Openmike. What about the Friday before? Available?

There was a whole checklist of points to ponder which WYSIWYG made up in discussing the first Camp Runamuck gathering.

Sooz' original list is here. A modified version for Camp Runamuck is here.

LEt us know about costs, eh? Ta so!

Be sure to check with the agency that runs the campground, for extra parking for group sites, etc. You could have a crowd! Some of those agencies are pretty picky about parking (as one who used to have to get folks to not park on the grass in Corps of Engineers campgrounds).

It sounds like fun, and a great setting. I wish I were closer so I could join in with the kids!

If Friday eve isn't available at the campground, I've got couch/floor space for a few. However, the cat loves houseguests (even those allergic to her) and someone IS going to wake up with a napping cat on their stomach.

A crowd?! Oh, goodie! I will keep it in the plans, then, and circle the date--in red! or is the mudcat color blue? Friday is a go, too. And I have hosted jams there before where dogs came and they enjoyed it, too.

My house is a mile away and there are opportunities there to take a sauna, swim, fish or canoe in the pond, more hiking, hot showers, bath, see goats, emu, split and stack wood, well, maybe that would be too much! I am a vegetarian, so would appreciate food items that I would be able to enjoy, too, but no policing on this !

I believe the wild azaleas will be blooming at that time, and perhaps the dogwoods too. Just up the road "a piece" is national forest if any
one wants to explore the back country..and just across the road is the volunteer fire station and "my" engine, which i could give you a tour of...(hopefully i will not be called to take it anywhere for an emergency call)

any suggestions would be great? event name? We have held an event in this area called the wild mountain faire. It happened every june for 20 years...music, crafts, food. In the public park down the road from the campground...I live at the base of wild mountain and the fair was put on by many folks, including my land partners. It has not been held for a few years now, because it grew too large to handle...thousands of people, overflowing parking and other space,,,etc.

The community has recently moved an original old one room school house to a place near the current school and we are re-furbishing it. I do not know if it was already furbished or not. Hopefully it can be used as a venue and performance location some day..you will pass it on the way.

send any comments, suggestions, or whatever to me in a p.m. or to my e-mail address which is veraloe@cncnet.com yipee! looking forward to it....

Glad you posted this so far ahead, OM. Gotta firm up some other travel plans soon.

Looks like I can make it, and I might even drive from the Portland area, in which case I could offer someone a ride at least one way. (I may stay in CA a week or so before going back to PDX.)

If I fly, though, I won't have a guitar with me. Is that a problem?

How far is this place from Santa Rosa and how far from Alameda?

It's a fair piece from Santa Rosa (about 3 1/2 hours). From Alameda -- *which* Alameda? The one in the Bay Area? That's about 3 hours drive.

I'm sure we can scrounge up a guitar for you. At the rate I aquire instruments, I'll probably have one I can't play by then :)

Subject: RE: West Coast Mudcat Gathering Planning

If I fly, I may be able to bring my 3/4 size Ibanez. It can fit in the overhead compartment in a plane. I'm hesitant to check a guitar now, since airlines won't insure them (without substantial extra cost) and now they won't let you lock the case, either.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of driving to the Gathering site (east of I-5, near Red Bluff?), then driving to the Bay Area afterwards and flying to and from San Diego from there. That way I could bring a sleeping bag and other stuff I'd need for "roughing it."

Yes, Nicole, I mean the Alameda in the Bay Area. Santa Rosa LOOKs a good deal closer. It isn't? ('Course, it depends on whether you wanna take the mountain roads or the flatter roads.)

nearer to Chico-the main towns in Butte County are Chico, Paradise,
Oroville, and Gridley. the campground is east of chico..check the link with the map...and zoom out a bit and to the west and you will see the
relationship to hiway 99 and I-5 i will send maps closer to the time..
surprised i am planning so far ahead of timw-i usually do things last
minute--Be Here Now! I'm sure we can find guitars, etc. or ask folks with room to bring "extras"...

Maybe nearer to Chico, mike, but that's meaningless to me, since I've never been there. Having made the trip from Portland to Santa Rosa, Oakland, Sacramento, Alameda, El Cerrito, and even Clear Lake a number of times, towns east of I-5 are only road signs along I-5 to me, but twons like Mt. Shasta, Redding, Red Bluff, Weed, Concord, etc. mean something.

I guess the main question I have is: how far (how long) is the gathering site from, say, Redding? Or Red Bluff?

That will give me a much better idea of how long it will take from Portland.

Thanks,

Genie

THE LOCATION IS ABOUT AN HOUR, AS I SAID, FROM CHICO. REDDINIG IS ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS FROM CHICO...AND AS I ALSO SAID I RECENTLY TRAVELLED TO PORTLAND AND IT TOOK 12 HOURS, BUT THAT WAS IN BAD WEATHER.
YOU MIGHT MAKE IT IN 10-11. Sorry for all caps--unintentional...
the map is within the post from Amos on jan 12...you can zoom out to see how it fits in with other surrounding landmarks...

Didn't mean to be obtuse, mike. It's just that the maps don't tell which roads are the 2-lanes that wind over the mountains and go through all the small towns. Hard to tell how long it will take to go 50 miles on an unfamiliar road without knowing that sort of thing.

Would you get off I-5 at Red Bluff and take 99 to Chico? Map Quest show another road that seems shorter between I-5 and Chico, halfway between Corning and Willows, near Orland, but it doesn't give the name of that road. It looks like it would be faster to stay on I-5 and cut over to 99 at about Orland. Unless 99 is a four-lane and not too winding.

FWIW, I'm glad you picked the week end of the 8th. The previous weekend is too close to the NW Folklife Festival in Seattle, and the following week would be very close to the San Francisco Folk Festival. But, then, that's just my preference.

99 is a major highway, 4 lane in most places and 6 lane in the others. There might be a few 2 lane spots. Take the 99; that's a 2 lane street going from Orland to Chico that you're looking at.

When you are looking at Mapquest, red is a major freeway/interstate and yellow is a major highway. Gray is the little roads.

from I-5 , you would want to go until you are south of red bluff and
take the cut-off which is the southern most exit at CORNING. I think
it is called south street or avenue. There is
a big truck stop there and it crosses the Sacramento River at Woodson
bridge, where there is a nice state park. When it gets closer to the time i will post more specific driving instructions from various directions N, S, E, W. Hiwy 99 is a 2 lane for a few miles but then
widens out to 4 as it approaches Chico. There are 9 exits for Chico.
And a good food co-op at 8th and Main, if you want to pick up munchies..
a few minutes south of Chico there is a cut off road to take -- Durham/

one thing at a time! maybe again in the fall, but
with fire season coming up i never know what will
be happening when it is hot, dry, and windy late
in the season....spring is a better choice...
some folks have hinted they might arrive on Fri.
the 6th--that would be great...
a lot of other things will happen between then
and now, so we will see!
I tried to pick a weekend that was after Strawberry,
but before the Grass Valley blue grass evnet, but
when "festival season" starts, most weekends are
taken. Had to squeeze it between Kate Wolf and
Wild Iris, too. And San Fransico Free Folk music...

Laurel:

I'm a little unclear on location precisely -- is it on Concow Road right outside of Deadwood off S-70? That would mean (for me) running north from SAC on I-5 to the S-70 fork. Or have I got the location wrong? What's the nearest town that would show up on Mapquest?

The nearest town to the south is Oroville.
the closest town as the crow flies is Paradise..
if coming from Sacto, yes go north on 99/I-5 to
the place where 99/70 split and keep to the right
on hiway 70. Then after Oroville, the hiway curves
to the right and heads up towards the feather river
canyon on the way to Quincy. After the 4 lane bridge
over the west branch of the north fork of the feather
river, which is a finger of Lake Oroville, the road
climbs up past a scenic overlook spot. When the hiway
turns back into 2 lane, there will be a left hand turn
lane, right by the Dome Store, a.k.a. Canyon Lakes Mkt.
This is Concow Road, and the campground is about 5-6
miles north of the Dome. All paved, 80 curves. Well,
that is 80 to my driveway, maybe only 75 to the camp-
ground. It is either called Lake Concow or Holland Camp-
ground, and it is on the left across the road from the
Fire Station #38, the nearest cross "street" is Ishi
Trail. This is named after the "last wild Indian" Ishi, a
man from the Yana Tribe who was taken to U.C. Berkeley
by the Kroebers in 1911. The Concow, Yahi and Yana are
all sub-tribes of the Maidu Nation, I believe.
See you in a couple of months!

(no terrorists, no viscious dogs, etc) I am also inviting the
folks on Pal Talk, the local folk music society, the old time
fiddlers, contra dancers, and those who attend the music jams
at the local cafe, and people from area folk music radio show
--no membership cards to any certain organization required!
And not strictly mud cat members, either.

I need to buy a plane ticket by the end of this month (to save $), and I need to know whether to make Portland, OR, or the bay area my take-off point. (I'll drive from Portland to the Bay area if the gathering is really gonna happen, and fly to southern CA from there.)

this is at a public campground so it is available
any time you want to show up...I am going to be
organizing a community blood drive and other stuff
so i am not sure if i will be able to make it friday
or not. Hard to tell what will be happenig that far
ahead of time. I will try to make it friday night.
I guess we should organize some pot luck, or other
plan? I can bring barbeque grill and such, though
i don't care to eat meat, but i can't tell others
what to eat! I hope we will all eat, drink and be
merry!! If anyone has any ideas about how to plan
meals, tasks, or other essentials, let me know!@
otherwise we can do it completely free-form and
hope for the best. There are picnic tables there,
and a shelter for the tables. and i can bring my
r.v. and an extra tent or two . Portland is about
10 hours away, san fransico is about 4 hours. We
have plenty of time to plan specifics, i just wanted
to circle the weekend before it got filled up with
other activities...keep in touch...

I'll bring fresh veggies (great on the grill) and such; I can hit the farmer's market on Friday morning next to my office. There should be a plethora of good stuff by early June.

I think as long as folks know to bring stuff and we get the basics covered, we'll be fine. It's not like there won't be a grocery store down the road if we really need something.

The closest store is 6 or 7 miles away, and has basic stuff,
nothing fancy, no sprouts for instance. It takes about 15
minutes to get there. Next closest are in town--Oroville,
Paradise and Chico are all nearly an hour away..so you might
want to come with supplies unless you want to commute to the
store or town..the Dome Store or Canyon Lakes Market is at
the corner of highway 70 and Concow Road. There is also a
hardware store, post office and "mini-mart" just east of that intersection on hiway 70. I am making up invites to pass around
at the old time fiddle contest and other events between now and
then so we should have an interesting group. yipee!

The camp ground is a small family-owned, private space. they will have the main pic-i-nic pavillion reserved for us, and the spaces are not all marked out or paved, just a bunch of spaces by a mountain lake, in the tall trees. very casual. not plug-ins or running water at each site, but
then a great place to get away from t.v., traffic, pollution, and city lights and noises!! and make music!! if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

the Concow tribe is a sub-tribe of the
Maidu Nation, Neighbors of the Paiutes
to the East, Yana and Wintu to the North, Pomo to
the West, and I think it is the Nissenan
to the south. IT is only a coupole of hours
from nevada city. I often go there on the
back road past Bullard's Bar Reservoir.
If they are in the North SanJuan Ridge
area, this route is easy. and a beautiful
drive. Ahh0thr fragrance of Kitkadizzy

also i will suggest that spaghetti might be a good item for Sat. eve.
meal. sauce ingredients could be shared--
mushrooms, peppers, tomato sauce,

Your email is bouncing Laurel, but I plan to attend this weekend.

Community food is generally out of the question for me, as I'm deathly allergic to onions. Ya'll have fun with spaghetti and such and don't mind me, as I'd rather not be making any trips to the hospital. I planned to bring some zucchini and other squashes for grilling plus some buffalo burgers and corn on the cob. (Enough to share some.) Provided we have a grill up there...? Open flame is fine with me, but do the firepits have grills over them?

If I have time Friday afternoon, I will gather the stuff for my awesome onion-less guacamole.

AFAIK, I am not giving anyone a ride or providing Sacramento hospitality. Speak now, or you'll miss out. So, is this shenndig happening Friday eve or not until Saturday morning?

Found out a few weeks ago I couldn't make it. Hope y'all have a great time, and if you do it same time next year, I'll make a point of making it if I can!

Genie

we are there-i can report back that the gathering is in porgress..
nice music cirle around the campfire last night. MOre merriment
expected tonite. some folks are hiking, exploring in the nearby forest and taking sceninc drives in the feather river canyon near by.
We have these localities represented: Santa Rosa, Berkeley, Georgetown,
Sacramento, and room for more! we will be there until 5 pm sunday.
Nicole has the draft of the cook book, and we are reviewing it--
it looks great..mouth watering!! we have guitars, mandolins, fiddles, bodhran, a stand-up bass, and fun awaiting...must get back to thew camp ground, just came to the house to check messages, water garden, feed pets, and get a few more instruments and supplies..and to report to the list!!
Oh-by the way, for Joe, and others who might be driving on hi way 7-0
north of Sacto, at the place where 99 & 70 split south of marysville,
there is a detour sign she said. It routes northbound traffic to 99.
There are several place where you can get back over to 70..prob. the best and easiest is to take the 149 cut-off road which is just north
of highway 162 . this takes you to hiway 70 where you go left to Concow road. you might call 1-800-gas-road, the cal trans road condition number, or go to the cal trans web site for info...
there is some construction in the canyon east of here.

Well, it looks like I didn't make it. We went to a Bar Mitzvah this morning, and it lasted a lot longer than we expected. I couldn't have left home until 6 PM, and that seemed to be a bit too late to bother.
I hope you guys had a good time. I'm sorry I couldn't make it.

Too bad, Joe. We didn't really get rolling musically until 8 or 9pm last night. Sory you couldn't make it.

Thanks again to Laurel for planning this. Probably my last weekend of fun before the move at the end of the summer -- it was a great send-off!

home again, home again, jiggety jog!!
What a wonderful weekend. How magic to
get together with so many previously
un-known people, now friends, and find
so much common ground! Thanks to the
Mudcat for allowing us to meet each
other!! We hope to do a repeat per-
formance next year, good lord willing,
and the creek don't rise!!
There were robins feeding their babies,
osprey flying over head, rufous-sided
towhees, canadian geese and a gaggle of
musicians. Thanks to all who came, and
contributed in so many ways!!
Same time, same station...Laurel
