Subject: I love Mudcat From: Grey Wolf Date: 21 Jan 00 - 11:57 PM Given that there's been so much negative feeling around here recently, I thought I'd try and introduce something positive, lest we forget how good this place still is. Today I learnt how to start playing guitar like Kate Rusby, I learned better ways of transfering tapes to my computer, I smiled at the discussion on the best way to glue guitars and I listened to some MIDI files of songs that I'd not heard in ages. Yesterday and the day before were similarly good. When I log on tomorrow I expect it will be equally interesting. I think that Mudcat is ace, and long may it continue |

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Mudjack Date: 22 Jan 00 - 12:12 AM HURRAY.....We have a positive note. I've been reading a lot of debate and see we have been crapping in the litter box again. Us cats just have to do that every now and then. But the litter box gets stinky after a while and some think it is OK to crap on one another. Thank you Grey Wolfe for starting the positive note. I think it is time we dwell on the MCs good points and bury the crap behind us. Read what you want and post where you can be comfortable. We have in our reach probably the best Web site to be found anywhere. I listened to Max on radio archives and heard some disturbing remarks. Folks, Cats, you loose him, we all fold and and find another place to hang around. Max sounded like he was on the edge of chucking the whole thing. We need to be more sensitive to his needs and give him encouragement, not bigger headaches. I litsened to about an hour and still found the radio show very good. Positives are good......... Mudjack |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Grey Wolf Date: 22 Jan 00 - 12:20 AM Mudjack - plese don't dwell on the past and mistakes that we cannot change - the purpose of this thread is for everyone to say how good Mudcat still is |

Been a great help to me, filling in for the missing chat and interaction I had with my former workmates. I no longer get to speak to any of them except two, and one of them is moving 70 miles away next week.... You've all filled in a very lonely time in my life, thank you. Hopefully I will continue to be able to post, when I start work next month for the IRS! LTS |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Little Neophyte Date: 22 Jan 00 - 08:12 AM Grey Wolf, what a good thought! It is soooooo important to focus on the good things. In the past couple of days I have become a glue expert. I have been encouraged to sing and was shown how to expand my range. I learned a great deal of history from Don Mclean's American Pie. And someone is sending me sheet music to my all time favorite Seals & Croft 'House At Pooh Corner' What more could a girl ask for? BB

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: jeffp Date: 22 Jan 00 - 08:32 AM There is so much interesting knowledge held by the people who post here that they are willing, even eager to share! I have learned so much in the short time that I have been coming here, I can't even begin to list it all. What we have here is an international community of people from all sorts of backgrounds who come together and offer facts, ideas, encouragement (a lot of that), creativity, and some truly bizarre senses of humor. All in all, a wonderful place to spend time. The Mudcat has enriched my life in ways I never expected. And for that I thank all of you. jeffp |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: kendall Date: 22 Jan 00 - 09:57 AM This is the best thing that has happened to me in many years. Its loss would be catastrophic. Liz, you wanna compare phone bills? I just got one for $1625.65 for one month. The geek who set up my computer put in an out of town access number, so, every minute I spent on this thing was a toll call. 99% of that time was in the Mudcat |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: The Shambles Date: 22 Jan 00 - 10:06 AM I would just like to correct any impession that I may have given that the Mudcat's problems ever outweigh the real positive influences in this great place. Everything can be made better though, let us do just that. |

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 22 Jan 00 - 10:59 AM Ah, yes, the Mudcat. The DT and the people who post to the forum are a cornucopia of information. So much so, I am surprised when an answer is not forthcoming to a question posted. I am amazed, could it truly be no one knows? But no, someone allmost always comes through. 'Frinstance, the answer to the Jeopardy Green Grow the Lilacs question just this morning. I have learned more about the histories and personalities of folk musicians I admire. I have gained a deeper understanding of musical theory. I have learned some techniques I can use in performance. I have found that there are many people with interests similar to mine who have the same questions about the music and what they do with the music. I feel I have developed some friendships and have met many wonderful people. Long live the Mudcat. Roger in Baltimore |

It's a great resouce with great people and a lot of knowledge that's simply priceless. I wonder what one would have to pay for all of this good advice and information in the open marketplace? I'm glad I don't pay for the time I spend here (one monthly fee of $21.95 for unlimited use). I'd probably spend a fortune, because it's such fun. |

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Little dorritt Date: 22 Jan 00 - 05:14 PM I concur completely, I have returned to folk over the past year or so after a long absence, and I have rebuilt my songbook mainly from Mudcat. Since I am not, and I do not think many of us are, one dimensional folkies, I enjoy the diverse nature of these threads - I like the humour, and those threads I don't understand or don't agree with I don't participate in. I hope it continues much as it is at the moment - as for the disruptive element - well I am sure my dad is bigger than their dad, so I'll not lose sleep over them! |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Mark Cohen Date: 22 Jan 00 - 05:47 PM If I had to pay by the minute for my time on the Mudcat, I'd be broke. This community is important to me, here in the middle of the Pacific. I'm glad for its many experts and many characters, for the connections to music and people I've lost touch with since leaving the Northwest, and for the people who share their humor and humanity along with the music. Once at Camp Harmony I mentioned to Faith Petric how wonderful it was to be a part of the folk community that stretched from Northern California to British Columbia, and she replied, "It's a lot bigger than that. It reaches all over the world." Faith is right, and the Mudcat proves it. Mahalo nui loa (many thanks) to all of you, and especially to Max for putting so much energy into doing this, and doing it so well. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Jon Freeman Date: 22 Jan 00 - 07:24 PM For those living in the UK, the Screaming Net/ LocalTel deal is worth looking at. You have to move your phone from BT to local tel but they say line rental is the same, guarantee call costs 10% cheaper and offer a free ISP. Phone calls to this ISP are free between 6pm and 8am and all weekend. It is the only way I can afford to spend the amount of time here and ICQ.. that I do. Jon |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Jan 00 - 07:28 PM Screaming.net is how I can afford it too - it was lousy when it started, but pretty good now. If I had to pay for the time I spend here I'd be skint. |
Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Little Neophyte Date: 22 Jan 00 - 07:44 PM I just poured myself a glass of Faithful Hound, a Mulderbosch red wine which my girlfriend brought back from South Africa. Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Caitrin Date: 22 Jan 00 - 09:23 PM I love mudcat! And more still, I love mudcatters! Y'all have all been wonderful over the past few months that I've been here. I have learned more about music here than I'd ever thought I could in such a short amount of time. Thank you all for being the musical, intelligent, thoughtful people you are. A special thanks particularly to katlaughing, for being the first person to welcome me here and make me feel comfortable, despite the fact that I have considerably below average knowledge and experience of music. And to add to the toasting: Here's champagne for our real friends, and real pain for our sham friends! |

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: Llanfair Date: 23 Jan 00 - 03:53 AM Phew! What a relief, it was all getting so heavy yesterday, I was forced to use my full name!!! Liz, I was getting bills like that, they are scary. AOL may have it's faults....Katlaughing will tell you all about them, but their penny a minute now means that I am bolled monthly instead of quarterly, and £30 isn't bad for the amount of time I spend here. Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: bbelle Date: 23 Jan 00 - 06:25 PM I came to the mudcat looking for the lyrics to one song and I'm still here 2 years later ... not because I have a burning need for song lyrics ... but because of the people... a few whom I now call "friend." When I've been especially blue, I've turned to the mudcat to make me laugh. When I have something exciting to share, I often share it on the mudcat. I met my wonderful friend, harpgirl, via the mudcat. I know that I could travel nationwide, and even internationally, and find a mudcatter, with whom to play music. And we would have lots to talk about because the mudcat would be at the core of our conversation. If you've been around the block a few times, you know this isn't something you take lightly. I've learned so much musically. The mudcat has stripped away my shell and allowed me to feel emotions that I thought were gone forever. Max is very old for his years and I think he knew when he designed the Mudcat Cafe it would encompass the world. And it has done just that. What a high it is for me to be sitting in Tallahassee, Florida, chatting with Alison in Oz. Who'da thunk it? And, while there are times when I need to put space between me and the mudcat, I'm still there. Checking in on friends. That's why I love the mudcat ... moonchild |

It is hard to say just why a web of singing souls Should provide such a constant draft of pleasure But I am glad to know it will be there The next time I click on through. I'd say you all earn thanks, Just for what you do for each other. And an occasional ingrate, and a sourpuss or two Just makes the bright spots better. Thanks for being Mudcat; keep it rolling. A. |

I love Mudcat because it keeps me going. I know I can "come here" anytime and find words of inspiration, warmth, understanding and kindness. And that's worth more to me than anything. Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: GUEST,Mbo Date: 24 Jan 00 - 10:46 AM How much do I love Mudcat? WITHOUT QUESTION. Ask my sisters and my parents. They'll testify that I spend more time on Mudcat than I do at anything else. I just love it here so much! The epic tale that spawned from my little Mudcat Juke Joint post was the greatest thing I've felt I've ever had the honor to be a part of. I'm also looking forward to having one of my songs being played on Mudcat Radio, possibly this week. But most of all--I love the Mudcatters themselves. I've had the chance to go beyond posting, and do some ICQ chat and Hearme stuff with some 'Catters. It furthers the connection I feel--instead of faceless internet colleagues, they become close and true friends. I goes to show that friendship is so strong that it can pop up across five to five thousand miles, between people you've never seen or met--that's what I call true friendship. Goodness knows you're the only real friends I have--I have no friends in real life. I love you every one....*sniff*....acusle mo chroidhe.... --Mbo --Mbo |

Subject: RE: I love Mudcat From: pattyClink Date: 07 Apr 01 - 05:23 PM Like the creepy woman in the Irish Spring ad: "I like it toooo!" But seriously, I've missed the negative stuff that's been mentioned, except for some people talking about down days and sad events. I assume it's threads I'm not clicking on. If it's the political threads that are bumming you, well, maybe if we'd all skip 'em, they'd go away? Too many threads, too many songs, to waste bandwidth on political tussles.

It's wonderful to think you share so much with people all over the world and discover the ones you have a lot in common with. I find myself putting thoughts into words that I have never done before, and then getting instant positive feedback, seeing people make a difference to each other and supporting each other and even being able to make a bit of a difference myself, sometimes reading things that make me laugh, cry or think deeply. For friendships with likeminded (and occasionally not likeminded) people For the DT For the forum which backs up the DT with other info on the songs when you're doing a search and can't find what you're looking for (I have encountered SO MUCH information when researching related threads-- websites devoted to lore of the Selchies, for just one recent example) For the PM pages where you can have private converations with friends or share info that's not of general interest for the Forum where so many kind souls will help you find words and references not found in the DT and other problems we all need help with For an opportunity to share ideas, inspirations, the pleasure and love of music, hopes and fears, ideals For showing us the world is not so big after all and we are not alone I get on Mudcat at least twice a week when my life is busy, once a day when I can, and as often as possible when I'm traveling. I try not to spend more than an hour at a time, because it is so addicting; but I can't always limit myself to that. There's too much wonderful stuff here. Just for comparison, I seldom spend more than 3 hours a month looking at other sites on the net, though because of my work I am often on email an hour or two a day. Bekki |
