Anzac Day.
A day of drinking or a day of morning?

The definition of Cull is to kill numbers, of a species to limit their numbers:Men do this to animals, men do this to each other, tragic but true.

THE CULL (C)Ken (Spider Tom) Robertson.
And the order was sent, from Command, to the Front,
They were sending them out for the Kill.
Sprung out of the trenches, like hounds on a hunt,
But dying like flies on the hill.

In The Field, you own nothing, even Life's not your own, Like the cloths on your back, you're on loan.
You're only a number, a "piece", in their Game,
Soldiers die, spill their blood to the stone.

Chorus
What a senceless waste of Life!
Just a stupid waste of Life!
War,a senceless waste of Life!
Devils' Darkness, steals the Light.

Man, he learns little from, mistakes of the past,
Young men sent like lions, to the slaughter. Where the choices aren't much, just to kill, or be killed, And you'll fall first, if you faulter.

And there's many a business man, sat on the sidelines,
Counting the wealth, War has made him.
The vultures, the leaches, they sell to both sides,
In War, they're the only ones to win.

The last thoughts of soldiers, lying, dieing in battle, Most likely, go down the same path,
Last thoughts, of loved ones, or babies with rattles,
Are cut short by Death, Wars last laugh.

We are programmed to Kill,or programmed to Cull,
Or be killed, or be culled, in the fight,
And years after battle, there's many a soldier,
Awakes, with a scream in the night.

I dream of a day, when we lay War to rest.
Lay down thegun, and the spear.
A world, with a place for The Peace Dove to nest,
An end to the Culling and tears.

THE CULL.

Mourning in the morning, Spider Tom, but, maybe a wee tad of drinking has been known to happen later on Anzac Day. Guess it's a way for those who still "scream in the night" when thinking of the "cull" to drown or talk out the memories. Then, usually later in the day, the real mourning hits, and the tears flow.

Love your words, and sentiments, especially the use of the word "cull". Don't hear it used much these days. Where in the world are you? Once, many years back, I was a "culler", and literally shot the living daylights out of herds of deer and goats. Reducing their numbers. With no natural predators, they were eating the lights out of our forest. Not a pretty job, but, alas, necessary.

Let's hope we eventually find something more user friendly than war to "cull" our already overnumbered human species. Doubt I'll see it..:(

It's encouraging to hear that Anzac Cove was declared a "Peace Park" a few hours back.

Thanks for the thoughts Ken.

Peace (and a drop of piss) on Anzac Day - Sam

G'day again Shambles,

While you are waiting for Spider Tom, you could look at the thread well below on ANZAC Day in NZ for the view from the Eastern Islands.

BTW: ANZAC Day is when we Aussies and Kiwis remember that, as far as the British are concerned, we are just cannon fodder and they don't really have to plan invasions all that well.

Bob Bolton

Bob,

Bloody Hell the Last Post is playing on the wireless.

Am I correct in assuming from your comment that you flamin' Ozzies celebrate Anzac Day on the 24th of April? That's bloody underarm bowling mate. Now it's "God of Nations" on the wireless. I'm a Kiwi, cobber (described by the Yanks as a "short-ass duck" in WWII) from "Godzone". You're 16 hours ahead? Go read "On Our Selection" and wash your mouth with lysol..;)

Shambles, ANZAC is an acronym for "Australia, New Zealand Army Corps" - despite the acrinomy expressed in the above para for my "Cuz-cross-Taz", both our countries "blooded our spurs" for nationhood on 25 April 1915, when God knows how many of our fledgling countrymen lost their lives going ashore at Suvla Bay, in Gallipoli, at the entrance to the Dardanells in WWI - Brits were there too mate.

Shambles, it was a fucking Shambles. I've got a thread going on my thoughts on this Anzac Day.

Just listen to Eric Bogle's "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and you'll find what us "cobbers" from down-under think of the futility of war. Well, not really, I'm about to start a flamin' war flamin' Bob Bolton, who should be boltin' fer cover right now - an Oz 16hrs ahead of a Kiwi? Go bite your butttttttttt....

On a (slightly) more friendly note, Bob, (Geez Kev, this should be in the "Dover" thread) - you ever come across my mad mate Frank Povah (now a publisher in Oz)? Oh shit, Povah & Dover rhyme, feel a 12 bar coming on...

Anyway....

Y'know Povah, Bob? Just caught up with him on the web a few weeks back.

And what the hell has that got to do with Anzac Day? Lots, but, TAS (That's another story).

Cheers - Sam

FLAME

Bob, we got cross-posted, what is this BS about the Earstern Islands [Explosion of compulsive laughter] Bob, I won't correct the typo, I LOVE it, and promise to use it at all times. Us Kiwi don't just talk funny to you Aussies, we listen funny too, from up our arse, which is the right place, because you Aussies always talk shit.....;)

How irreverant on Anzac Day, when we're supposed to be cobbers....;)

Anyway, now the tears have stopped streaming down my leg, I'll continue with what I was going to say....

All real residents of the South Pacific (I'm not being Pacific, I'm flamin' a flamin Oz) know there are SIX islands in our neck of the woods. We can recite them from birth, in order of priority.....;)

1. Stewart Island

2. Chatham Island(s)

3. Um...... South Island

4. Ummmmmm..... North Island (south of JAFA land)

5. Tazzie

6. And, there's annuver one just north. Yeah, West Island...;)

What can I say that hasn't been said already?
I'm a lucky one, I've not had to be shipped to a culling or a killing, but am secure in the knowledge that we are governed by people who would use us or allow us to be
used again in this callous way.
I just got upset watching ouw P.M. Patronize an old
soldier, knowing that he is currently at war with all
Aussie workers, as for me explaining all about Anzac Day, What would I know?
Cheers to Bob Bolton and Billy the Bus
To the Shambles, as you can see the real wonder is that Auzzies and Kiwis fought together, and not, each other.

Thankyou for the compliment,
I will probably be doing the Cull in one of my spots at the St Albans Festivat(near Wisemans Ferry12-14/may) Where I will be performing as Ken Robertson.
Otherwise I'll be doing it on Hearme or at the Western Suburbs FC or Macquarie Towns folk club,I have another one I wrote some time ago called Play Soldiers, about how boys play with toy guns so it will condition them for the real thing(Unreal?)
Hope to see you sometime.

A couple more points about ANZAC day Shambles. After 8 months, and enormous loss of life, we had to pull out of Gallipoli and sail away. So in fact we celebrate a defeat. ( Only us Aussies & Kiwis can manage that ) The pull-out of thousands of troops was engineered in such a manner that not one soldier was killed, and the Turks were not aware that a withdrawal had taken place until some hours after the event. Not a bad achievement to disengage from an enemy that was, in some cases, only metres away and leave a hostile shore. I marched today, for the 28th time, with my comrades from the Vietnam war. What a great bunch of blokes. And in the quiet periods, between marching band brackets, sometimes all you can hear - is the tinkling of the medals.

Hi John,

Great to hear from a "real" ANZAC who served overseas. I was a "Terry" in 1966, on 24-hour notice to go to camp if our 2nd NZ Battallion went to Vietnam. I'm more than somewhat glad I wasn't dragged into that conflict. I've been with our local RSA for around 20 years. Early on there would be 40 marching, mainly "returned men", including a couple from WWI. The "gongs" rang loud and clear as they marched. Y'know, yesterday I was trying to work out how long back it was, since the Vets, for some reason, stopped wearing their medals to Parade? About a decade back, I think. Must find out why they stopped wearing 'em.

And, Shambles, it's our Aussie/Kiwi sparring that keeps us on our mettle...;)

I usually hate people messing with songs but I am guilty in this case....the song about the banks of the Murray...I wrote another verse because it seemed empty somehow..

his name was Joseph and I am his father I went to the big one and came home all right The last thing I thought of when I was in combat was someday I'd send my own boy off to fight then I remember the birth of my son and oh how I prayed he would not hear the gun But his number was called and in 71 they shipped his remains to the Murray.

Callie, Alison, Alan, Spider Tom, Bob

I hope to see you at Snalbans too - still waiting to hear if I have to go to a "team building" weekend with hubby - I'm still hoping they will change the date of that, but I might kidnap myself, take myself hostage, and go to Snalbans instead.

I'll break out the Mudcat t-shirt again for easy recognition. We should have a Mudcat flag - fly it near the best session campfire. Hmm, might have to work on that for next year.

G'day again,

Billy/Sam: Oops, I didn't realise you were posting from Enzed when I read your par on Spider Tom's posting time. I thought that was one of our American 'Catters ... since the time shown is Mudcat time (currently 14 hours behind Australian ... and 16 hours behind NZ). The 16 hours was in reference to American Eastern time, which is indeed 16 hours behind East Coast Australian since we are 10 hours ahead of Greenwich and New York is 6 hours behind.

In re. the remarks about Gallipoli: The ANZAC Corps fought well and bravely ... but the Poms still treated them as cannon fodder and they certainly didn't plan their invasion well. I've no argument with anyone with anyone (nearly) directly east of here ... that is reserved for the High Command who thought that they could walk up to an entrenched enemy commanding the high ground and beat him. It was amazing the ANZACS did what they did ... so well.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

This thread has reminded me that my mother's oldest brother died at Gallipoli,at eighteen, (presumably shelled, as only some of his kit was recovered and no identifiable body )and her youngest brother in the battle for Crete in the Second World War at about 21. Both young lives wasted in campaigns doomed to failure with the benefit of hindsight, and probably at the time, except to the eyes of the desk generals.

Hi Bob,

Guessed you guessed, I was an Eastern Time Anzac guest, just couldn't resist a stir...;)

Helen, if you catch up with THE Povah at Snalban, give him a big hug from me. Haven't seen him in a quarter century. Here's a poem I knocked up a couple of weeks back, after we'd finally made contact - Guess it's sort of ANZAC talk, he's Auzzie, I'm Kiwi, and we got in and out of a few scraps together...;^)

___________________________________

Povah Blues
===========

I first met up with Povah in the year of '65,
Well, blow me days, I just found out the sod is still alive,
He's been outback for 15 years but now has come to town,
And praise the Lord he hasn't ever put his old gat down.

Frank me boy would sit on stage a singin' old time blues,
Never missed a single note, when fill to the gill with booze.
I've even see him fall off-stage - the crowd let out a roar,
For Povah finished off his lick, flat on his back on the floor.

Povah, Brock and Winnie sang at the "Bladder" and the Monde.
Others too would join in for Blues - verses a-la-ronde.
When they closed down we'd all troop off to a party at a flat,
And if the wine was getting low we'd whip around the hat.

Then, Frank and Brock went off to Oz, upon an old Greek tub,
The "Angelino Lauro" - hours late leavin' - here's the rub.
"Vino Gino!" brought the steward with a bottle up his coat.
Some of us only made it ashore upon the Pilot Boat.

I didn't see me old mate Frank from then to 74,
When, "calling" at a Dunedin dance, there was Povah by the door.
He'd come from Stewart Island, where old Ferndale had burned down.
So he'd packed his gat, and headed north just for a look around.

We had a grand night, and got quite tight, then went out for some supper.
We saw Dunedin Courthouse, and merrily scrambled up her.
A cop came along, didn't like our song, and made us come back down.
Said goodbye to Frank and went up the track to dear old Blenheim town.

Soon after that there came a knock upon my caravan door, There was Frank with gat on his back, wanting a bed on the floor.
He camped with me for a week or two, or maybe even three.
Only problem was I'd trip over him when I went out for a pee.

Then back to Dunedin Courthouse for an interview for a job.
With Magistrate John Murray, I had to button my gob.
A burst of raucous laughter in his office would be a sin.
I was looking out the window, that Frank and I'd looked in.

I got the job, and moved down south, unto Tautuku Bay,
Sang round the clubs a bit, 'til I came Stewart Island way.
Been out of folk for 15 years, but on one thing you can bank.
I'm practicing now, some day I'll play Blues again with me cobber Frank.

He's talking about visiting NZ again. Alas, no whiskies, he's been on the wagon for years, he tells me...;(

Bob Bolton, you speak the truth, far too often we have had our soldiers fight for others who care nothing for "colonials".

Roger the Skiffler, You wrote of the TRUE tragedy of war, and that is what I was trying to say in my song.

Billy The Bus, I like your poem,Tells a story well, I think it would make a good balled (long, but good)

G'day again,

Billy the Bus: I should get back to Snalbans this year - I was at the first (a decade back) and since then have had other commitments (playing for Bush Music Club Heritage Week Ball). Now the Ball is separate from Heritage Week and St Albans weekend is free, so I should get there (after picking up my wife from her annual Persephone-like descent to the underworld ... 3 weeks with her mother, in Tasmania - comes back on the Saturday so I will only make the Sunday.

I hope to run into Frank Povvah, who I met at Gulgong, then at Morpeth, some years back. I wil also keep an eye out for assembled MudCatters.

Mary G: "People messing with songs" is what makes "folk music". The tradition lives on updating and that is what you have done ... added one more verse in the endless line of wars ... created (as a church sign, near where I grew up, once said) "by old men who don't have to fight in them".

Regards,

Bob Bolton
