This would make a great road movie with soundtrack album to match! BTW I hope Bill put plenty of foot powder in those second-hand (foot?) boots. A report in the press says that dance shoes harbour more bacteria than sports trainers. Podiatrists are calling the resulting problem "Riverdance Rot".

Now, I didn't get this in before, but it's funny. My four year old daughter, Kristine, has been into "Jack and the Beanstalk" lately. I guess she made quite an impression on Bill when she strolled into the room, stating: "Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman".

Yes indeed, a good time was had by all. I think we ought to encourage similar quarterly tours by other adventurous Mudcatters. I'd like to thank Alice and Wayne for graciously hosting the Montana segment of the tour. Bill is a charming ranconteur and fine musician, and may be in danger of turning into a western footwear fetishist - he scored a great pair of cowboy boots for $3 at the local thrift shop! Then he revealed he has another seven pair at home! Ask him to tell about the country western nights in the UK clubs. He's got some hilarious tales.

As Kat says, Allan's voice is sweet and he plays as clean a style of 12-string as I've heard in a while. He kids that "Allan doesn't play well with others," but he more than held down his end at our two sessions. He has some amazing disc recording gear that is very small and very effective.

It was great to get info from Bill and Allan about Mudcatters they've met and what they're like. Alice and I were both full of questions about "is so & so a male or female ?" "How old are they?" "What kind of music do they play?" etc. We began to see them as real people and not just icons in the ether. I hope this kind of cultural exchange can keep on happening.

I will post more later...just starting to recover from a bad drug reaction which just happened to coincide with THE VISIT. Bill & Allan, being the grand gentlemen they are, as well as Mimosa, carried on with gracious aplomb, filling me with awe and gratitude at the wonder they brought to my home and heart. While about all I could do was sit and grin from ear to ear, they brought good will, fantastic music, deep understanding, and abiding friendship to all who heard them. Made me just burst with joy at the world class concert etc, which it was my privilege to host.

Sorcha and her family were just great. Thanks to Cait for all of her gracious assistance and some damn fine spoon tapping, to Sorcha for the great fiddling and to Brian for my very first tipper! Made a bohdran out of my native american drum and had my first lesson from Brian!

I love that twinkle in Bill's eyes and the lovely, lovely way he has of saying things, plus his voice and mastery of the instruments, oh gawd, if I'd a willing horse or *summat*, I'd a followed him and Allan just about anywhere! And, to hear Allan sing a love song, well....watch yer hearts, wimmin, cause he's out to steal every one of them!

Mimosa is a treasure to have met and heard...a wonderfully trained voice, presence, and gorgeous hapr playing...whenever he opened his mouth and graced us with a song, I closed my eyes and could just *see* the Great Hall of some castle, filled with bardic voices....and his little dog was a perfect gentleman.

Couldn't have done any of this without my sister, Bet, and Rog...they did most everything and I am grateful and proud, esp. of the way Rog piped the session into a HearMe. The technology just astounds me...here we were in our little living room, cats and dogs and kids and instruments and these incredible musicians from so far away, making music and sharing it with several others through this incredible medium.

Alice, has got it right when she talks about the aloneness out here. I spent a great deal of timing marveling at what brought such an event to pass. Now that it has come and gone, I still marvel, but mostly I give thanks for such an incredible, lifetime experience and hope for another with more of you someday.

Allan and Bill, to your germ of a thought come to life and the good hearts you sent before you and the lingering friendship you left behind, my deepest thank you's.

Travel safe, gentlebeings,

Hello, this is Alice. Allan and Bill left more than a few minutes after his post. I waved a tearful goodbye to them at about 11:15 am Mountain Time. I was sad to see them go. I am not embarrassed to say I now feel immense affection for both of these men. Living in the isolation of this rural area, we tend to be loners and solitary people here (at least, I am, and I know many others that way). I had been content to remain just some words on a monitor and a photo or two to the Mudcat members, as well as private personal connections through letters. I didn't really understand why Bill and Allan would drive all this way just to meet me in person. Now I know why it was important to meet them, to make music together, to listen to each other's stories.

Bill and Allan and I travelled down to Jardine together and so had a chance to talk about many things on the way. I have photos of Bill next to the bear crossing sign on the footbridge to Wayne's house. I have photos of Les, Bill, Wayne, and Allan, talking in front of the wood-butcher house that Wayne built. Wayne has a second story tower on his house with a wooden spiral staircase to that level. There are small Alice in Wonderland type doors that lead into sleeping rooms under the eaves. You open the door and crawl into the room to get to the mattress on the floor. I had the tower room on top, a steep ladder goes to a trap door that opens onto a room with windows all around. It is small, just big enough for a wide foam pad. I could hear the high water of the creek rushing all night. It was good to see Les B again, to hear him sing and play. Les and I had met only once before. In addition to the musical experience at Wayne's, I visited with a fiend of Wayne's who owns a Yellowstone River rafting company. She launches her boats from the river access where my grandfather Earl McConnell's claim was on the river.

Les and I drove back to Bozeman in the morning. Bill and Allan followed us to Bozeman later. We did make contact with John the Yank Harrington's great nephew and had hoped for the guys to drive over, meet and play with John, and drive back to Bozeman. It was just too much for one day. The continental divide is between Bozeman and Butte, and for anyone who has driven over the Pipestone Pass, you know what I mean. All the way from Jardine to Butte, then back to Bozeman was too far. Well, we had a great experience here and at Wayne's, and the Montana segment of this adventure has been, I am sure, a memorable time for all of us who shared it.

Allan here.

SD, I am sorry we are going to miss seeing you. We were really looking forward to hearing some of your music.

Bill and I have been talking about trying to get a little ahead on our schedule. If this will effect anyone's plans, we will be in contact directly by phone. Mostly we are hoping to just gain a little time so that we will not be rushed as we pass through the lower Lake Michigan area.

We will be leaving Alice's in a few minutes. It has been both relaxing and wonderfully musical the whole time. We spent last night (until about 2 AM) singing and playing with Alice, Les, Frank and about seven or eight of Alice's friends.

Folks, I would love to spend some time telling you about each of the real-life personalities of the 'Catters we have met. I think I will have to put it off until after the trip. There just isn't enough time at the moment. Suffice it to say that each Mudcatter has been even nicer in person than might have been previously suspected. Alice and Les are no exception. Also, EVERY 'Catter has been far more talented than any imaginings I might have had.

Nothing about this trip has been anything but wonderful!

Bill & Allan--

Haven't been on the 'Cat much at all lately, so I don't know if your journeys are still planned to take you through Dakotaland (South, that is, wadin' pools, TV stars), but unfortunately, if you're still going to be in Sioux Falls this week, our (tentative) hopes to get together with you will unfortunately have to wait until future EAs, for several reasons: 1) I'm still recovering from bronchitis (one of my reasons for being an absent 'Catter of late, the other being the recent acquisition of a new toy, a Handspring Visor :-)), 2) Beth is in the middle of a marathon week of teaching Photoshop/web graphics/etc. to University faculty, and 3) We're expecting family to show up from on the road any day now, but they haven't told us when yet. Grrrr. But at least I'll get to play guitar with my brother-in-law again.

Sorry not to get on this sooner, and we'll be sorry to miss you. Sounds like it's been a most E A.

But should the EA travels of you or any other 'Catters bring anyone near to our fine, desolate prairie again, do keep a stop in "Siouxland" in mind.

Oh, and while I'm at it, anyone in the region might want to consider the Sioux River Folk Festival, August 4-6, Canton, SD. Headliners are Nickel Creek and Peter Ostroushko and Dean Magraw. Oh yeah, and maybe, just maybe, yours truly will be on the Gospel Stage Sunday afternoon again this year.

Chris

Allan here.

Sheridan was a nice town. I took Bill to a Perkins restaurant (formerly called Perkins Pancake House in my previous years of living in Montana) where I showed him the reason I always went there: huge caraffes of excellent coffee! And of course, the best pancakes on earth!

We stopped by the town of Garryowen where we learned all there was to know about Custer's folly (when he foolishly thought he could get the best of Sitting Bull - ha ha ha). It was gratifying to see that there are firm plans for a memorial to the Native Americans who died there.

Bill and Alice and I got ever-so-slightly lost on the way to Jardin and found ourselves on a dirt road which ended on a mountain top upon which we found three bison and numerous mule deer!

Eventually we found Wayne Skertich's house and spent half the remaining night in the midst of some wonderful music. Wayne is a really fine fiddle player and put in some time on a stand-up bass as well. Alice sang beautifully as did Les Benedict - who, BTW, is a fine guitarist, banjo picker, and mandolin player. There were others there who joined in the fun and added quite a bit to the music. What a night!

Today Bill and I decided to not go up to Butte because we got a rather late start this morning. Instead we visited a number of thrift shops in Bozeman and met a guy named Pete who was in the process of purchasing a banjo at one of the shops. By the time we were done, I believe we had made an on-the-spot conversion. Yep. I think we may have another 'Catter soon.

How'd you like Sheridan? I bet Bill really got a kick out of it. I've actually been in that very saddlery shop, and we wrote a story about the guy who made some of the finest saddles, etc. I can't remember if he's still living... But what a great little Western town, huh?

Thinking of both of you in your travels and wishing I could have tagged along. I love that country up there.

Loved you two also. Can't wait for the World Domination Tour next summer...

Allan here. We have made it here to Alice's after spending the night in Sheridan, WY. Unfortunately the saddlery museum was not open this morning (Sunday, you know) but we got to see a few things in the window.

The plan now is to head down to Gardiner (or more accurately, to Jardin which is about five miles away from Gardiner) this evening. We (Alice, Bill and I) will spend the night there after what promises to be a very musical evening.

Tomorrow's plans are still in the making. I'll keep you posted.

Please pass this along to Bill and Allan. In the day they are to be passing my way and stopping in for a beer and some music, I will be in the hospital having some testing done. I will catch up with them at Old Songs but necessity calls me elsewhere, unfortunately.

Before anyone wonders whats up, there are just tests and nothing has prompted them other than family history and my soon to be induction into AARP.

I have discovered that lamarca is a "she", and the person at kat's was definitely a "he".......and a wonderful harper. I asked twice, and still heard "lamarca", so I sincerely apologise to both of you; the Real Lamarca, who is another Mary, and to he whom I met at kat's today.......major OOPS for the deaf lady. Well, guys, I just finished a long phone conversation with Wayne Skertich. He and I have never met, but I know his daughter Zondra from our local Bozeman sessions. She is a university student here. Zondra is on her own road trip, in Illinois right now. She had told me she was writing a book on her family's history of music, and I had assumed she was talking about bluegrass, since I knew she and her parents played bluegrass music.

In this conversation with Wayne, I just learned that his family is Croatian, and his heritage is the Balkan music that was performed in the Chicago area by his father, uncle, and other relatives, called the Skertich Brothers. He has alot of ethnic intruments, about 50 78rpm records they recorded. (He also has a friend who is British who lives in Livingston who plays flamenco who may drive down.)

Wayne does not have a computer at this time, but once in awhile can use the library internet. He found a website with photos of his family and the Skertich Brothers band at tamburaweb.com - here's the link click here Skertich Brothers Tamburitza Orchestra. Now I am considering going down to Gardiner tomorrow night with you to meet Wayne. I hesitated because of the price of gas and other obligations, but after talking to Wayne more, I am persuaded that having us altogether in Jardine, hearing his collection of ethnic instruments, being together, would be an opportunity I should not miss. On Monday night here, my voice teacher would like to come over and hear the music, I have another friend from England, a couple of local fiddle players who would like to play... Sunday night in Gardiner and Monday night in Bozeman are going to be quite an experience.

Now I am off to mow the lawn. I'll check back later.

I have just gotten back from a trip I had to take the day after our gathering at LEJ's, so this is my first chance to post.

I make it a practice to collect perfect times in my life, knowing that as I string them together in my memory, they become this life's crown jewels. Wednesday night was just such a time. It was so amazing to meet these carnate beings I've known for over a year in the ether. To actually hug 'em and play music with 'em and laugh deeply and loudly -- so much more satisfying than ROTFLOL...

The company was congenial, the mountain air crisp and clear (after threatening rain early on), LEJ's log home in the pines was the perfect setting and we had a night dense with texture and goodwill. Bill has offered to take us around England next year when the Mudcat World Domination Tour continues (I think we should call it that whenever one 'Catter goes a'visitin' with other Mudcateers out of her/his home territory). I simply must get a passport ...

And Rex, I agree -- we need to get the Colorado 'catters together whenever we can to keep the connection going. I did find a house in Pueblo today, so I'm heading downstream, but having come from Wyoming, a measly ol' two-1/2 hour ride doesn't seem like much.

Thank you so much LEJ for hosting such a deeply satisfying event. (Catspaw, don't go there..)

Whew! It was over so fast. But then we did go to well after 2:00. It sure was a fine evening and EJ put up a bunch of good eats. It sure was good to see Bill, Allen and WyoWoman. A big surprise was seeing BlueJay. He couldn't get enough of the South Colorado stop so he came up with the wandering minstrels. My guitar player showed up (his name is Steve) but not the banjo player. So we had a tough time playing some good bluegrass for Bill. No matter, he picked up the five stringer himself and did a fine job. What a guy, handy on the guitar and banjo too. Then there's the melodion. He was playing jigs left and right on the mando and we were following as best we could. Seeing as we weren't following too well with jigs from his homeland he started in with some american jigs. He knows a bunch of material. Sure liked Allens songs. Some from around the world. Loved WyoWoman's singing and fine yodeling. And BlueJay's songs and 12string playing. We need to get the Colorado bunch together again for some more of this. EJ was fine on the harmonica and singing along. Didn't know you knew that Civil War song EJ. It was over too soon. I got home and laid down for two hours. Then it was up and go to work. That made for a long day but I survived. I sure wish I could do like BlueJay and go North for another session. Good luck to our travellers. Hope everyone has a great time up in Wyoming.

Since people will be drifting in and out around here today and tonight, I just wanted you to know, don't sweat it on trying to get here by any particular time. Mimosa said he was going to try to be in this evening sometimes, so for eats, I thought we'd just put out some cold cuts (yes! meat in my hosue for you omnivores, Rog & my sisters included!**BG**) with ham, turkey, cheese, sandwich rolls, different chips, some kind of cokies, etc...you know, the kind of stuff that rots your arteries, BUT will also have fresh fruits and veggies, too. Not sure what anyone wants to drink, so there will be spring water, coffee and we'll make a run for whatever else we need when people put in their orders. If none of this strikes yer fancy....ummm...too bad!**BSEG**

Betty and I did a trial sing in HearMe last night and it went pretty well...it is going to be so much fun to see you AND hear you....what a wonderful thing this incredible community is, to have brought this to pass!

By the way, I hope your visit can recruit some musicians here to the Mudcat forum. Aside from Les B, the only other Mudcatter in Montana that I know of is Aron in Columbus, a friend of LEJ and Wayne... remember the attempt at Mudstock last summer? Anyway, Aron lives in Columbus, a small town just east of Billings, an easy stop for gas along the highway. One other musician from our session here stopped into the Mudcat once for lyrics (Bob W.). Les and I seem to be the only ones with the real mud membership at this point.

Hi, Allan, I didn't know Bill had already been to Yellowstone. This does sound do-able. Keep me posted, cause there are fiddlers and other musicians here who are starting to show interest in getting together at my house when you are here. Yes, this is exciting! So.. maybe Sunday you will pass through Bozeman and go down to Gardiner (Jardine) to see Wayne, right? I'll give him a phone call tomorrow and let him know. He doesn't have access to email except once in awhile at the library.

Allan here. I have discussed the travel issues with Bill and he has basically said, "Whatever will be, will be." So here is my best guess. We will leave early from Casper and head north to Sheridan. There we will stop at the saddlery shop and then head to Billings and turn westward to Bozeman. We will touch base with Alice and then head down to Gardiner to meet as planned with Wayne. I will try to give Alice a call somewhere along the way from Billings so she will have some idea when to expect us. We will decide the next morning as to how much of the north end of Yellowstone to visit before we head back to Alice's. I truly believe this is do-able.

I guess it may sound odd, but I, myself, really don't care one way or the other about touring the park and Bill has already seen it. This trip is MOSTLY about visiting 'Catters. The other stuff along the way is entirely incidental and not a vital part of our trip. Just as long as I can see an elk or two before we leave Montana, I will be a happy camper.

Folks, I just got home and I'm worn out. This has been such an incredible three days. It's something I'll tell my grandchildren about. (In fact, I've already started). Between meeting Allan, Bill, BanjomanCo at my house, and meeting, (and playing music with!) the whole group of Mudcatters and Mudcat friends at LEJ's, I am blown away. Played a little blues with LEJ, bluegrass with Rex, and tried to follow Bill on the melodion. (Allan warned me about that). And got to play a Kate Wolf song with WyoWoman. She mentioned in a recent thread that it would be nice, (if we weren't so far apart), if we could try some of Kate's stuff. Thanks to Allan and Bill's great journey, it became possible. WyoWoman has a wonderful voice, I enjoyed it immensely. Of course if she reads this post, she'll probably chide me for the lousy sentence construction above.BG As I said, this has been one of the coolest experiences of my life. I feel so fortunate. And it has me thinking I really need to find more time to PRACTICE. Many thanks to you all. BlueJay

The "Rent-A-Bed?" Is this one of those rates by the hour joints? Less if you "keep the sheets clean?" Well damn Sorch!!! I hope you at least booked them the appropriate companionship over there at the "NoTell Motel."

Allan, I was just looking at your Wyoming plans, and Wayne and I are on the phone right now. It is not possible to get from Casper through the Tetons and Yellowstone to Gardiner in one day (Sunday). You can't drive at interstate speeds through the National Park. But to come all the way to Wyoming and miss those two national parks would be a tragedy! Wayne does have friends in Sheridan. Mitch plays bluegrass mandolin. The name of the couple is Mitch and Kathy the number is 307-674-1718 (Sheridan). Wayne and I are trying to figure out if we should invite guests each of these nights if we are not sure of your time of arrival. Please advise!

Check in when you get to Casper. Thanks, guys.

After barbecued burgers, bratwust ,sweet corn and salad, we sat outside by torch-light under the stars and had a whale of a session. I was able to record most of the hootenanny, and will mix down some tape in the next few days. It was a night to remember thanks to Allan, Bill, Wyowoman, Rex,and Bluejay, as well as honorary Mudcatters Dan, Jeanette, Elise and 10 year old fiddle-whiz Kyle O'Brien, and not to forget Rex's guitar-playing pal Bill. The selection of songs ranged from traditional English hornpipes and American Bluegrass to Dylan , Guthrie, Stan Rodgers, Everly Brothes and original tunes.

What a great thing the Mudcat Cafe is when it brings people together in music, as it did last night. Pure magic...

LEJ

Allan here. We're getting ready to head out from here in a moment. Last night was magical! We were surrounded by great muscians and singers. I am never really surprised to find that the 'Catters are so very talented. But at the same time, I am always amazed, or rather in awe of the wonderful music each has shared with us. This adventure is just about the finest thing that I have experienced in my life!

Look out, Sorcha. Here we come!

Allan C.

Allan here. Sorcha, that plan sounds good to me. We will go wherever you point us.

kat, fret not. We will arrive shortly after Sorcha turns us over to your domain. From that moment on it is WE who are at YOUR command. If you want to do some music Friday night, fine. If you want to stage an armadillo slinging contest, we'll get in line with the rest. Don't sweat the small stuff. All will be well.

At the moment we are listening to an Rick Fielding CD. I am (obviously) here at the magic box. LEJ is on the upper deck burning burgers while WyoWoman grades his flipping for technique and style. Bill has just loaded his plate and BlueJay is right behind. Rex is outside with burger in hand. I think it is clear that this bunch will indeed sing and play for food! Each of them has asked me to say "hi" to you.

It is now my turn at the grill so I am off and running. If you listen carefully in about fifteen minutes you will begin to hear the music.

Best wishes to all!

Allan C.
