Been looking for lyrics to songs Mr. Dave sings for a long time now.. Specialy from his latest albums with Wally Ingram.

like to contact people who love his music too ! Last time I went to a concert was in Holland (where I live) with my nine year old son. It was in a bar !!! It was awsome. We went to his dressroom later and took a picture from Wally, Mr.Dave and my son Ronald. K, that's it. Bye.

Here's one website. There is a link to the 'official' web page, but I keep getting a 'Connection Refused' message.

Another big fan of Mr. Dave here too!

Johan, it probably isn't of any interest or help to you, but David Lindley and Wally Ingram will be performing at a RootsFest here in Victoria, B.C., July 21-23 along with Altan, Blue Rodeo, Shooglenifty, Joan Armatrading, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Natalie McMasters, to name a few.

Lindley used to play here fairly often in the past and I think I would prefer to hear him in the intimacy of a club again, but I am looking forward to this festival all the same.

I still find his stuff with El Rayo-X a delight and just as fresh as when they first came out.

I have been a David Lindley fan since his Kaleidoscope days. His song "Banjo" on one of those albums is outstanding.I also love his work with Hanni Nasser.I got them both to sign a burned out Tiki Torch and David told the the story about how he came to write " Tiki Torches at Midnight". It was a hoot.

I mentioned him on the most versatile guitarist thread I think. El Rayo X just slays me, even now. Cool story about him in Acoustic Guitar Magazine lately. Mooh.

Range Roger,and DL fans
Wasn't Tiki Torches at Midnight the works of Bob "Frizz" Fuller? It is possible that they colaborated but I know Friz penned it. Chris Darrow was a Kaleidescope band member who later worked with the Nitty Gtitty Dirt Band. David, Chris and Friz (at one time) all lived in and around Claremont CA. That was some cultural educational music.
There used to be a local "Stavation Cafe" that on special occassion would feature Friz Fuller or Chris Darrow. One very memorable night David Lindsy's daughter was featured and sang and played a uke sized mandolin, finger picked and was an absolute knock out on stage. She mezmermised the entire audience. Never did get to see David there, but saw Ben Harper (also Claremont) several times before he started touring with Taj Mahal and then rocketed to success with his own band with Virgin Records. Every town in the country should have a Starvation Cafe.
Thanks Johan for some D.L. stuff....

Can't exactly say that we're fans of David Lindley. We had a very unpleasant experience with him about twenty years ago.

We were working at a small folk festival and because it was small, we did the workshop scheduling and performed at a concert and several workshops ourselves. By the end of the second day we were exhausted and ready to leave but Lindley was the final act and we volunteered to stick around and help load the sound equipment into the truck.

Not only did he show up late for the gig but he played way longer than he was scheduled for which kept several of us from leaving even though we were tired and hungry. Also, he evidently had given no previous thought to the set list so he rambled around and between songs he did a lot of talking apparently to himself and his instruments. In short, he was rude to the festival promoters, volunteers and the audience.

To be fair, we should mention that he was not paid for this performance but niether were a lot of other people and they weren't rude to anyone.

Mudjack,
you may very well be right. The story David told was where it came from.He told about a Hawaiian restaurant in South Downey that use to have an all-you-can eat luau every Friday night. The place was entiely plastic. The hula girls wore plastic grass skirts and leis and there were plastic volcanoes that spewed fake lava at regular intervals.
He had a friend(Frizz ?) who would ingest copious amounts of acid and go there and eat until he had to go to his car and puke. Then he would go back in and eat more. The way David told it had all of us laughing hysterically while he signed the torch.

Howdy fan of Mr. Dave. Good to get so many responds! And the fact that you're from Canada me like to (I love Canadians.) Did you get his album "EL Rayo-X Live" ? You'll love it! Did you ever see him with Wally Ingram? He's realy good too. Hope mr. Dave will be here next year again, but he's getting OLD. In Germany there's this new record label Ulftone. I think David stays there a lot while in Europe. He even mailed me once from that adres.. K catch you later Metchosin. (What kinda name is that anyway, are you in Indian?)

Johan,Kaleidosope was a band formed by David in the late '60s that combined Rock and Roll with Bluegrass,Folk,Country and Eastern music. The song "Banjo" was david playing a banjo through an Echoplex (this was before digital delay effects). The song built in speed and intensity, with other instruments joining in until it finishes with a Warp 9 rendition of "Cripple Creek".
It is on a CD entitled "Incredible Kaleidoscope" Edsel Records ED CD 292.There are 5 or 6 Kaleidoscope CDs out, distributed by Demon Records Ltd in England.

Is this the only way to respond to people? Or do I have to start a new thread every time? Anyway, you gave me some good info here! Gives me something to do; try and find these old albums. Thanks man! Yo. (I joint the club ; nickname is Yo.)

When I was sixteen I saw a record named "anthology of the banjo", it was indeed a scientific sample collection of 5string banjo. until then I had fancied Oldtime Jazz and Nashville, but now I discovered american folk for the very first time... joe maphis' "Banjo Breakdown" was wonderful, but a little excerpt from an undescripted tune by david lindley made me nearly cry. I never had heard something so sad and in the same moment so lively like this.

That day I lost my soul to folk. Now I'm playing several instruments by myself, write messages to the mudcat discussion forum and listen to weird stuff sung by old men without teeth that acompany themselves on selfmade fiddles. And all this because of 2 1/2 minutes of David Lindley.

Funny that nobody has mentioned his commercial Blues/Rock Hit, Mercury Blues. One of the hardest driving slide guitar tunes I've heard. It wasn't until many years after hearing this that I heard him play the five string on a compilation album and was really impressed by his playing of an old tune, I think it was "Liberty"

I must seek out some of his other instrumental work.

Yo, glad that you joined.
During the crash I went to Amazon.com and fond that they list 3 of the Kaleidoscope CDs. "Incredible Kaleidoscope", "Beacon from Mars", and "Blues from Baghdad". The banjo song is on "Incredible" and is also included on "Blues from "Baghdad" which looks lke a compilation from all of their albums.I hadn't seen it before, but it would probably be the one for you to get.Sort of a greatest hits CD.
One of the advantages of being a meber of the Mudcat is personal messages. The "other way" to communicate here. Go to the banner at the top of the page and click on "personal pages". I'll send you a PM so you can see what it is like.

In 1995, I Emceed (MC'd?)the main stage at the Chico World Music Festival. David was playing with Hani Naser at the time, and when I asked David how he would like to be introduced, he responded, "Oh, just say that Hani and I are the Beevis and Butthead of folk music"

Cheers, Debra

Rangeroger,
That definetly sounds like Frizz. When I saw him last he was in fine form but had some sure signs of over indulgence in some of life's scientific experiments.
Frizz is surely the real item, Some one that can write songs from whatever it is he is imagining in his altered state of mind, whatever it may be.
Bev and Jerry, Oh yes, I had heard about David's festival antics from other folks besides you. It seems in those days that was a status quo kind of thing to do. Big stars were always late. I agree with you, it is just plain rude.

Weeellll......, I orderd "Blues from Baghdad" ! It had to be imported ofcourse, so now waiting is all I can do. Since I met David in person last month, I'm an even bigger fan. btw: Wally was awsome too!! I tried to E-mail them at their label in Germany but I only got one or two short messages back. (signed D.L. or Mr.Dave). I guess I'll never know if it was realy him.... I tried to find out where I can get T-shirts or other stuff of the "Polyester for the masses"-tour. I saw them in a little bar, and they did not sell anything but CD's (El Rayo-X live..great CD !!). My 9yr old boy was with me that night so he'd like a T-shirt or something very much.(To be honest; so does his dad!) K, so far so good, I'll get back to you all to tell you how I like "Blues from Baghdad" with Banjo.

Yo!

I've also been a long time David Lindley fan. The El Rayo-X stuff is great to listen to loudly, especially in a large V-8 vintage automobile, with the windows down!

Gotta go driving, now.....

Yo, to answer your previous question from last summer "Metchosin" is an Indian word, interesting that you recognized that, it means "place of stinking fish". I'm not a First Nations individual but I use the word because its the name of the place where I live.

Haven't got El Rayo-X Live but have others on vinyl, "Win This Record" comes to mind. Really love one of his recent CD's, David Lindley and Wally Ingram "Twango Bango Delux" particularly love the cut "Do You Want MY Job?" and "Cat Food Sandwiches" is a hoot.

Saw Mr. Dave and Wally Ingram this summer, fabulous concert and workshop. Along with Shooglenifty and The Blind Boys of Alabama, those three groups made the cost of the weekend more than worth while.

Would either of the other bands make a sound that comes near David and Wally's? If so, I like to hear it Metchosin! I have Twango Bango Deluxe too, it's great ! He did the same kind of thing with a guy named Hani Nasser, but that's not near as good. I know English pretty good, but a "hoot" ¿? I guess that means it's good eh? At least I loove that song !! Do you play yourself? That "new" cd El Rayo-X Live has old songs on it. From the same period as Win This Record. Do you know the song "How Can aPor Man Face such a Times Like This"? Yo!

P.S. Do you know more musicians that make Twango Bango style music???
