Nah Bob, we grow redneck down South where I am. BTW with your name you'd fit in perfectly! Bobby Junior! So tell us some history of what the day means. Is it and actual historical date, or was it set so Canadians wouldn't feel left out while us crazy Americans are celebrating Independence Day? Kind of like a North American pride week?

Gee whiz Bob, no need to get so touchy! But while we're at it, the name is Mbo, also M-bo, pronounced "embow" being the combination of my first name initial "M" and the Southern first name suffix "Bo", as in "Jimbo." There is no relation of the name to my initial, which are MER. Soooo, do you barbeque on Canada Day?

Just saw a thing on the news regarding Canadian Independence Day. Apparantly, there is a fair sized contingent of Canadian military folks serving in Southern Colorado, Colorado Springs, actually. Seems the Canucks have had a presence her since the late forties. The ones they interviewed seemed quite content. They mentioned friendly people, great weather, and lots of other military people. One soldier stated lots of Canadians count Colorado as a "home away from home". I can't say. That's just what I saw on TV. Not surprising though. I have felt equally at home in my excursions to the North.

I'm with you in spirit. Celebrate your fine nation. If you you use fireworks, be very careful. Thousands of U.S. people go to the emergency room each year on our Fourth of July for fireworks injuries. (And stray gunshot wounds, sorry for the thread creep). Thanks, BlueJay

Just got back from a great Canada Day celebration on board the HMCS St. Johns. Crew and family members and private guests (which were us)were invited on board. The fireworks in Halifax Harbour were great until the fog settled in. Happy Canada Day everyone. Den

July 1 our family hightailed it out of Toronto for a BBQ in Barrie, followed by fireworks put on by the city of Barrie at Kampenfeldt Bay. It was so different from Wonderland or Ontario Place fireworks events....it wasn't crowded, and nobody was trying to SELL anything at this one!

Canada, 133 years young....

A bit of historical clarification...Canada Day (once known as Dominion Day) is not "Independence Day" and the proximity to the Fourth of July is coincidental (we don't give a s* what you Yanks do that weekend, just try to keep busy and please don't invade us.) It commemorates the Confederation of four original provinces into the Commonwealth nation of Canada, on July 1, 1867. (That's why Expo 67 was such a big ringadoo, it was Centennial year).

After Confederation, Canada was still a subsidiary of the United Kingdom, chartered by the British North America Act, which could only be amended in Britain. Throughout the twentieth century, Canada gradually shed the trappings of empire, except for a titular association with the British monarchy which we still retain for some reason. In my own lifetime we've gotten our own flag (without a Union Jack on it), national anthem ("God Save The Queen" was the national anthem until the sixties; "O Canada" was the "national song" until it was promoted) and finally a home-grown constitution. Persistant rumour has it that we will soon be getting new helicopters, electric lights and indoor plumbing, but I'm not holding my breath.

The four original provinces, which had different boundaries than currently exist, were Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The rest of them wandered into Canada over the next thirty years, except Newfoundland which joined in 1949.

My family and I spent the day at an old-fashioned big local picnic, with three-legged, potato-sack and wheelbarrow races, tug-o-war and finally fireworks. It was nice to see several hundred kids running around without a video game between them.

Yours, eh, Willie-O

If your 'we' referred to all Canadians, Willie, I'd like to disagree. We hope that all American Mudcatters have a great holiday, that they harmonize or hear heavenly voices, or, as a bare minimum, have as much fun as one can have with a potato sack.

Well yeah, possibly even more. Of course they orta have a good time. Just got my knickers bunched up over the suggestion that Canada Day is some kind of poor northern imitation of the Fourth.

And I should rephrase my request we not be invaded--you are of course welcome to pour through our borders armed with guitars, bodhrans, fiddles and mandolins.

Anytime!

Willie-O

Spent the weekend singing NorthWest Passage... That SHOULD be Canadas national anthem...

And all the CBC stuff hosted by James Keelaghan was a great upside as well!

But please don't invade us with tipples.

I spent the day in a parade, at the Arts for Peace Festival, and then singing songs at a small restaurant. A pleasant day all around.

Thanks for the info, Willie-O. That's more than I learned in all my school years.

In 10th grade World History class, we had a Canadian student in our class. One day the conversation drifted to where the teacher mentioned that most Americans don't know what the Capital of Canada is, and polled the class to see. Sure enough, not one of us Yanks knew the answer (I learned though--Ottawa).

That summer, the school sponsored a trip to Expo 67. It was a blast. Still, I had no idea it was the centennial of the Confederation, and I'll bet none of the other students (and probably few or none of the teacher chaperones) knew either. Rather pitiful, ain't it?

Well, anyway, belated Happy Canada Day. And hang on until you get that indoor plumbing, you'll love it! (BG)
