Subject: what is this monkey song?
From: GUEST,sonya
Date: 07 Jul 00 - 05:25 PM

my mother keeps singing a song about monkeys.

has anyone here ever heard it? are there any tapes or cds with it that i can buy somewhere. i'd like to get it as present for her fortieth birthday.

the lyrics go something like: here we come, walking down the street, get funniest looks from everyone we meet, hey hey we are monkeys and people say we just monkey atound, but we're too busy singing, to put anybody down.

thank you

Please Note

When you start a thread at Mudcat, please try to pick a title that specifically describes what you're looking for. Generic thread titles like this one cause a lot of confusion, and people often follow up and make it more confusing by adding requests for other songs (like this one).
For best results, please follow these guidelines:
  • Give threads specific titles
  • Please do not request more than one song in a thread

Even though the title of this thread is a problem for us, we'll do our best to help you find what you're looking for.
Thanks.

well, it's the theme song from a t.v. show called The Monkees which was about a band of the same name ,circa late sixties, early seventies I think........no idea where you'd get a copy now though.....I do remember Davey Jones as being quite cute though :)

Sonya - If you're not joking turn on your TV and watch it until a rerun of "The Monkees" comes on and you'll figure it out. They were a rock and roll band that was formed for this show and later went on to record several albums.

Davy Jones was the Brit and was in a very long running soap called Coronation Street, and very cute..... hot flash there, oooohh!)

Mike Nesmith was the serious one in a knitted cap, his mum invented white-out (Tippex, Snopake, whatever brand name). He went on to have a solo hit with 'Travel to Rio'.

Peter Tork was the goofy blonde one that no-one really liked, and the fourth was Mickey Dolenz; he was the only one who was a musician beforehand. He's the one with a face like a happy monkey, and is now stinking rich (!) after making a career out of being Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees.....

Here we come,
Walk down the street
Get the funniest looks from
Everyone we meet

Hey, hey, we're the Monkees, people say we monkey around,
But we're too busy singing, to put anybody down.

There is a lot more, but I'm too knackered to type it all out. Just go into any record store and ask for 'The Best of the Monkees' - they did some merde chaude stuff, like 'Daydream Believer', 'Last train to Clarkesville' and 'Valerie'.

LTS who isn't really that sad, no.....

Hi Sonya,

We are people. That means we come across as good, bad, and indifferent (And some of us are ugly too!). It is difficult to interpret tone in typed incomplete messages but you'll get better over time. Hang in there and keep reading. Focus on the fun answers and ignore those that are not fun.

And if you want a laugh, watch what they do to me for writing this.

sonya, you are misreading Noreen's comments which were in fact questioning WesleyS classifiny the Monkees as rock and roll and in a very friendly and joking manner.

Also, sonya although some of us, myself included do have our moments, stick around there are some really great people here and I can't think of anybody who would make fun of you for your question - stick around, I promise you, you will make some good friends from all over the world.

Be warned though, beware of Liz the Squeak - she thinks me liking some of the Monkees songs is scarey - but all I can say is I met her once - then I saw her face ;-)

Hi Sonya!

I don't think that Noreen meant that you were a joke, just thought the question might be; it's difficult for us old(er) people to imagine somebody not having heard of the Monkees.  They were very popular when I was your age, and that makes me feel terribly old, especially when I think how long ago it really was!  Here's a direct link to the words you're looking for, courtesy of Jon Freeman:  Monkees Theme  Do come back here any time you want to ask a question, or look something up; it's true that we're not all especially nice people, but we do try to be.

Don, according to http://melhi.freeyellow.com/faqs.html, all except Davey Jones had experience as working musicians prior to the formation of the Monkees.

It also notes that they prefferd to use session musicians rather than thier own abilities for the recordings.

That reminds me of a bet Phil Coulter is supposed to have made with Mickey Most.

Coulter contended (apparently) that a group with absolutely no talent could reach the Number One spot. And repeatedly do so. Mickey, it is claimed, disagreed to the sum of £10,000. (A 'small' sum; a 'token' bet)

Enter 'The Bay City Rollers'.
And they took the concept of remote recording to a fine art; getting their pictures taken in the Carribean, while session guys got on with the singing and playing.

They created quite an enduring fashion craze in the process!

Anyone remember them??

Couple things I found out somewhere:
Mickey Dolenz wasn't a musician prior to the Monkees. he starred in a TV show in the US in the early 60's called "Circus Boy". I have never seen it on cable.
Mike was and is a big talent as a singer and songwriter. He also did some of the first music videos. His video "Elephant Parts" won awards and led to the formation of MTV.
Peter Tork used to play banjo in Greenwich Village and auditioned for the Monkees with his firend Stephen Stills, who flunked the audition because he had bad teeth.
Davey Jones had starred in musical theatre in England as a child.
The boys wrote some of the Monkee's songs, but most of the early hits, including the Monkees theme, were written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Among the other songwriters who wrote for the show were Neil Diamond and Michael Martin Murphy.
Although a lot of the instrumental tracks were recorded by session musicians, the band did sing. After hearing the criticism that they weren't a "real" band, they worked up the songs (Mike on guitar, Peter on Bass and keyboards, Mickey on drums, Davey on tamborine, keys and groovy moves) and toured.

Although they caught a lot of flack for being "put together" and not playing their own instruments, this wasn't all that uncommon in the early days of rock. The Supremes were put together by Barry Gordy at Motown. And a lot of the Beach Boys tracks were done by studio pros. Whether you consider them legit or not, there was a lot of craft in their music and the shows were a lot of fun.
OK. I'm officially out of the closet. I'm a musical garbologist. I may not be big on the origins of the traditional music that is the meat and potatoes here at the Mudcat, I know a whole lot about pop cultural crapola. And I like it all.

Filbert, I'll let you into a little secret only known to those of us who have been involved in the Hearme sessions. Alison has been known to sing Shang A Lang!

Bartholomew, I can't make my own mind up on legit. I can accept that they did have talent but then there is the pretence that they were doing what others were doing, but then again many others have done that and who doesn't use session musicians or double track or whatever? ...

I heard a rumor recently, that the first MONKEYS show had to be cancelled at the last second because the bass player was so nervous that he , well... lost his cookies right there on stage before the first song. This being a teenybopper screamfest, it soon gave way to being a teenybopper uhm... well,... pukefest, and so everyone agreed at that point that it might be best if all present might just as well go home... And we thought that "THE WAVE" was only for sports fans!?

Bartholemew - you are even sadder than Jon and I! Incidentally Jon, when was the first time ever you saw my face? Because if it was the picture Micca sent round, those are not mine, I borrowed them for the evening......

I remember the Bay City Rollers, because I seemed to be the only girl over 8 years old in the county that thought they were talentless, ugly and pathetic. An opinion that hasn't really changed with time..... I will concede that they were very popular. I wanted to be greasy biker chick at the time, so I was into Quo, Snake and Purple....

To return to the Monkees - did any of their shows have a plot other than one guy falls hopelessly in love with an unobtainable girl? Did any of them actually ever get the girl??

And did they ever have the rent money???

As some may know, in the 1970s and 1980s, I ran a folk venue in Montreal called The Golem. Around 1984, Odetta's agent called and told me that Peter Tork wanted to come and play there. "What the hell," I thought, and booked him.

Peter packed the place. He sang and was an adequate banjo, guitar and piano player. His repertoire was a mix of Monkees songs, his own songs and a few traditional folk songs. I remember him doing a nice version of "I Truly Understand."

Peter ended up playing The Golem several more times over a period of about three years. When he played, he would usually spend from three days to a week in town and (except once) stay at my apartment. He's a very down-to-earth guy and was fun to hang out with.

Later, there were the Monkees reunion tours and we lost touch.

There is a lne from the song that says something like "you better get ready, 'cause they could be coming to your town." When I was about 7 or eight years old I thought Peter Tork was quite dreamy, and I used to sit on the curb, getting excited every time I heard a car coming because it could be the Monkees--after all, they said they might be coming to my town. When my own children heard that story, they thought it was hysterical. Now when they want to make fun of my optomistic (sp?) nature, they ask if I want to wait for the Monkees. Ah, the joys of parenthood.

My brother George was a huge fan of the Monkees when he was 8 or 9. He soon transferred his fandom to the Beatles, became a musician, and still plays here and there. Mostly here, since he's been living with us since January. It's been mostly a good arrangement, until last week, when my daughter went into his room while he was watching a Monkees rerun- and now she's hooked!! Herself (being much younger than me),has an extensive collection of "Best of the '60s" compilation tapes, at least one of which always seems to accompany us on long journeys. They all seem to contain either"I'm a Believer" or "Last Train to Clarksville" which are thus indelibly imprinted on my brain. But, of course, Lonnie Donegan and at least one blues tape and some jazz, are also there to counteract the effect!

Among the songwriters feeding material to the Monkees were John Stewart and Michael Martin Murphey.

it's funny how timing can change your perception. The Monkees were launched when I was at the exact age to fully appreciate them. We were desperate for more Beatles stuff (movies, records, gossip - you name it) and the Monkees filled the gap very well. That's one of the reasons I'll always have a soft spot in my head, er heart, for them.

On the other hand, I used to wonder why it took me so long to appreciate Elvis. After I thought about it I realized that when I began to get into popular music, Elvis was either in the army, or in all those movies. At the time, he was the antithesis of hip and so I didn't "get him" until later. By the time the Bay City Rollers came out, there was no way I could fall for that!

I have tried to keep this in mind with my kids, with positive results. I haven't had to eat my words as much since I learned to wait before expressing my initial reaction to bands like the Beastie Boys or Radiohead. I rarely say "how can you listen to that crap" anymore. And I have actually learned to like a lot of the new stuff as much as a lot of the old stuff.

I can see the headline - "OLD DOG LEARNS NEW TRICK". who would have thunk it?

Hey, who mentioned Lonnie Donnegan? I was asked for a copy of his hit record (No 1 in 1960 I beleive - for the life of me I can't remember the title) for a party in 3 weeks time, but couldn't oblige..... unless of course...... nah! No one would admit to that would they?

And yes, it was Pre-Monkees, and he was Ena's grandson... I never saw it, I just have a head full of crappy trivia.

Sonya - we are the people your mother has been warning you about..... especially that Morticia.
