Subject: UK Folk Festival dates & info From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 30 Jul 00 - 03:28 AM My friend Louise has now decided that we should go to a Folk Festival next year Neither of us have been to one before So we need help Which do you suggest and what dates will they be on Any tips on accommodation - that is has it got to be tents?? Louise likes the idea of Sidmouth as she worked in Exmouth fro a while and likes the area Any suggestions most welcome roger |

This year's line-up (details here ) includes Incredible String Band, Albion Band, Spank the Monkey, All about Eve and Priory of Brion (Robert Plant's new band). Plus, no doubt, all the usual Fairporters - Richard Thompson, Swarb, Ian Matthews, etc, etc. |

Subject: RE: UK Folk Festival dates & info From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Jul 00 - 06:42 AM The three main festivals for me are Sidmouth, Whitby and Fylde, and more locally there is Walton-on-the Naze.
What all these have for me is that they are in interesting places, and there's a sizeable fringe rather than just concerts with big crowds (like Cambridge), and there's a fair amount of dancing.
But it's horses for courses. Festivals come in all shapes and sizes. Therte's some more like rock festivals, and some more like village fetes.
Have a good time anyway. Get your Mudcat badge in case you run into any Mudcatters. (Maybe keep it under cover so there's an option of staying incognito if you run into any you don't like the look of...)

I think McGrath has clarified it for me. My friend is quite fussy and will need lots of distractions to keep her happy. I don't think she would like just concerts with big crowds or village fetes for more than one day. It looks like its going to be Sidmouth - fringe events and dancing are right up her street. roger |

For it runs from Friday to Friday and that gives you at least one weekend. I suspect that if you are lucky with the weather, you will probably make it a regular thing. If you only visited the seafront you would be treated to a whole range of strange sights and sounds, all for free……. |
