Subject: lyric request: Queen of All Argyle From: drake@cyber-wizard.com Date: 27 Nov 96 - 10:54 PM I'm looking for all the lyrics to this beautiful song: And if you could have seen the fair, Boys, if you had just been there. The swan was in her movement, And the morning in her smile. All the roses in the garden, They bowed and asked her pardon. For not one could match the beauty of the Queen of All Argyle. Thanks |

Subject: RE: lyric request: Queen of All Argyle From: Date: 29 Nov 96 - 04:14 PM drake & Ali, As I understand it, this song was written by Andy M. Stewart and should be found on (at least) 'Best of Silly Wizard' from Shanachie Records. The lyrics as I know them are included below. It's a great song, as are a number of Andy's. If you're not familiar with his work - either solo or with Silly Wizard - I can recommend it. Enjoy! - Ian ------------------- The Queen of Argyle - Andy M. Stewart Gentle men it is my duty To inform you of one beauty Though I'd ask you of a favor, not to seek her for awhile Though I own she is a creature Of character and feature No words can paint the picture of the Queen of all Argyle CHORUS: And if you could have seen her there, Boys if you had just been there The swan was in her movement, and the morning in her smile All the roses in the garden, They'd bow and ask her pardon For not one could match the beauty of the Queen of all Argyle On that evening that I mention, I passed with light intention Through a part of our dear country known for beauty and for style Bein' a place of noble thinkers, Of scholars and great drinkers But above them all for splendour shone the Queen of all Argyle CHORUS So my lads I needs must leave you, My intention is not to grieve you Nor indeed would I decieve you, for I'll see you in awhile I must find some way to gain her, To court her and to tame her I fear my heart's in danger from the Queen of all Argyle

Subject: RE: lyric request: Queen of All Argyle From: Alisdair Date: 04 Dec 96 - 01:37 AM Dear Alex, Aye lad I am a lass ... Hope ye are nae tae disappointed ! Slainte' ! Frae, Ali |
Subject: RE: lyric request: Queen of All Argyle From: Alex Date: 04 Dec 96 - 06:42 PM I am never disappointed by the lassies. As Burns put it (and he was inclined to put it about quite liberally), "The sweetest hours that e'er I spend, are spent among the lasses, O". It's just that where I come from (Scotland) Alisdair is a boy's name, in fact, when I was a young laddie, my family called me (and still call me) Alistair as the gaelic equivalent of Alexander (my Sunday name). As you can see, I go by Alex these days. |
Subject: RE: lyric request: Queen of All Argyle From: Ian Date: 05 Dec 96 - 06:13 PM Ali, I was equally surprised - but pleasantly so - to find you were of the fairer sex. Here's to more such surprises! Cheers! - Ian |

Subject: Queen of All Argyle From: Kathleen Date: 04 Aug 98 - 03:36 PM I was wondering if anyone could provide the full lyrics to "The Queen of All Argyle." I know the first verse, or a version of it: Gentlemen, it is my duty To inform you of one beauty, Though I ask of you a favor: Not to seek her for a while. Though I own she is a creature Of character and feature, No words can paint the picture of The Queen of All Argyle. And if you could have seen her, boys! Boys, if you had just been there! The swan was in her beauty And the morning in her smile. All the roses in the garden Would bow and ask her parden,
There are a few more lines in the chorus which presently escape my mind, but what I need are the rest of the vereses. Later, Kathleen

I know who wrote it, who performed it( prefer the Silly W. version...), I know the words and the chords...what about the song itself? Would really want to know to add to the sleeve notes on our next album. WHOOO? |

Subject: RE: Origins: any info on The Queen of All Argyle From: GUEST,kilshannig Date: 31 Dec 06 - 06:31 AM thanks Effsee, but I already thought of that one, but I was hoping for more...and thanks for the link, Peace, a good addition to what Effsee gave me. I guess it is just hard to want (and expect) usefull information from a song that is a "nowadays traditional" ...it has little history. Maybe the next step trying to reach Andy M. himself?! |
