John Dowling, an Irish man from Sheffield will be walking the length of Ireland (again). John, who holds several world records for long distance/speed walking will be attempting the 500 miles in ten days. He is raising money for a variety of Charities including the cancer and charities for eldery people.

Please support he if you see him. I'm sure that he will find some time to make music and he will be accompanied several of the Sheffield Irish dancers. He says this may be the last of these walks because he is now 71 and a great grandfather.

He starts on Monday at the north end.

And he will be missed at the 'Dog and Partridge' for the next couple of weeks. Julie have I seen you there?. Anyway I never found out which charities he is raising money for and how to contribute....Julie??

Charities involved are Marie Curie Cancer, a cancer hospital in Dublin ( ST Vincint's I think), something for the eldery Irish community in Sheffield and there may be others. If anyone knows John just give him the money when he comes back. Otherwise if anyone wants to contribute send me a personal message and I'd sort it out. I'm not sure about the route. I'ma at work at the moment making sure that all our computers don't die during the enrolment sessions and Tim isn't answering his phone. I'd try and find out for later.

Roger - I don't think you will know me from the Dog and Partridge as I don't get out as often as I would like. You know the routine, Job, family and a house several miles outside Sheffield. The last time I was there was at the end of the Irish Festival when we organised a session. Still I should come down more often as Cat ( the daughter) says taht she is going to go to sessions after her GCSE year and she can't have us in the same pub as her - so it might prove to be out of bound in 11 months.

Kids! My own children prefer to go to places where they don't have to see the parents. Most of my children, in fact, have taken up different sorts of music so we're less likely to bump into one another.

I've not been able to track down the route as they have taken all the publicity handouts with them in the minibus. All I know is that he should have started at the North end this morning.

A Double Marathon a day a the age of 71!

Let Me Introduce

John Dowling

An amazing 71 year old Great Grandfather, has been a race-walker for many years, he holds a total of over 30 world records and possibly the record for holding the most records!!!!

To name but a few of Johns records:
* 1 ,000 miles * 1,000 kilometres * 1500 kilometres * 3 day track record
* 6 day track record * 100 miles in less than 24hrs (completed over 70 times)
* Won 1 st ever British Veteran 10 k Championship road walk
* Roubaix 28hr race. 1st person to complete 10, 15 and 20 times
* 5 x Rouen 24hr race, at which the best distance was 207 kilometres
* Entries in the Guinness Book of Records

John has also completed the John 'o' Groats to Lands End, Lands End to John '0' Groats. Malin Head to Mizen head and Mizen Head to Malin Head, being the only person ever to race walk end to end on both Islands!!!!

The Millennium Walk is planned as his 'Swan Song', an attempt to complete the Irish end to end route from Malin Head to Mizen Head from the 4th to the 13th of September 2000 ..

This walk is in order to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, St Vincents Hospital Cancer Research Unit and the Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme, part of Community Service Volunteers.

Marie Curie Cancer Care - one of the UK's most comprehensive cancer care charities, providing care for today through nation-wide free home nursing; the largest number of hospice beds outside the NHS and an education for Health Professionals.
They offer hope for the future through research into prevention, earlier detection and better treatment of cancer.

St Vincents Hospital Cancer Research Unit, Dublin - is very close to Johns heart, they offer hope for the future by their research into prevention and better treatment of cancer.

Community Service Volunteers (CSV) - launched RSVP, The Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme, in 1988. It is a volunteer led, hands on, programme with over 7,000 volunteers operating in 30 regions throughout Great Britain. It targets mature adults harnessing their skills, experiences and enthusiasm and channelling this wealth of energy towards helping the needs of their local communities. Was just looking at last weeks 'Irish World' and there was a lovely write-up about John and his walk. Apparently he is from Tramore in Co. Waterford and is hoping to raise œ20,000. The piece gives an address to send donations to....

News from the walk

John is currently on the 4th day having covered 165 mile already. He has just broken the World record for the number of miles walked in 24 hours - 132 ! The weather is rotten.

Sorry Martin I have only been involved on the edge of this - eg shaking a bucket at publicity events when John was playing and the kids were dancing. I can only suggest that you watch for local publicity.

Hi Quincy,

I've been a bit busy so its the first time on-line for a few days.

John finished his walk with ease. I don't know how much money was raised. A fortnight later he did 100 miles in less than 24hrs in support of the local rugby club -Sheffield Eagles. I think that was the wettest day of the year.
