Music, not unlike beauty, is in the eye,(ear) of the beholder. Although I do respect your opinion,I cannot verify that this fella is or is not "THE GREATEST" as I've never actually heard him, have only heard of him once before, in a prior thread of yours,and keeping in mind that new guitarists are being born daily,I would be willing to wager that even if at this moment he is a teensey bit better than someone else,that probably won't last long. Does the "greatest guitarist" mean the best player in one style (or even 2 or 3) or the player who can play all (or most) styles at the highest level? If it's the former, then we have probably 30 world's best guitarists, and if it's the latter, we have to acknowledge folks like Gatton, Tuck Andress, Roy Buchannan, and a whole lot of lesser known players. Generally though, folks vote for the "stars", 'cause they haven't heard of the others. It's still huge fun for me to "discover" new players (who may have been around for years). I am probably the most ardent Roy Buchanan fan in the world, I saw him in London in 1972 and he played a eight minute improvisation of "Sweet Dreams" that was simply breathtaking. His death and the manner of his death was horrific. His best work was surely to come. And how can one compare a master of the Telecaster with a master of the steel strung acoustic? Or for that matter as kendall points out, with a master of the classical guitar? Well, for me, the answer is that it is the emotional impact you feel after a performance that counts. Clapton, Knopler and Chet Atkins are all clever guitarists for sure, but they are essentially all "showmen". You enjoy their playing, you admire their technique, but does it hit you on any deeper level? I guess what I am saying is that you actually have to see Tony play to appreciate the awesome impact that a solo guitar can create. Sans voice, sans accompaniment, just a acoustic guitar played with breathtaking fluency, speed and musicality in both fingerpicked and flatpicked mode. At the end of the day, the only people who would quibble with my description of him as the world's greatest guitarist are people who have not seen him play. Seeing is believing. Hey, even John Renbourn has called him the best guitarist in the world . And he should know. Murray |

However, I have to say that classical guitarists, no matter how prodigious theeir technique may be, lack something (for me) simply because they are interpreting somebody else's dots. Guitarists like Clapton, Buchanan and MacManus are speaking from their own souls. I wopuld just like to add here (for kendall's benefit, since he mentioned Segovia) that McManus and Segovia have a lot in common, since they both took a repertoire that had not previousl;y been considered guitar material, and made it their own. In Segovia's case the classical compositions of Bach, and many Spanish composers, in McManus case, the great pipe and fiddle compositions of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. Both revolutionaries, in their own way. Murray |

In my opinion, Segovia is the greatest classical guitarist that ever lived. However, for sheer enjoyment, I prefer the music of Gordon Bok, Dave Mallett, Rick Fielding, Ed Trickett and Bernie Houlahan of Moncton New Brunswick. These guys tend to play for the audience instead of for other musicians. There are many great banjo pickers around, Kathy Barton, Howie Bursen one of the Dowden sisters of Virginia, but, I like to hear old Grampa Jones because he does no more than is necessary to the tune. An instrument should be a vehicle to carry the piece, not the whole parade in itself. IMO. |

It is just about the pinnacle for the guitar with all 3 foiling and pushing each other higher. I hesitate to say the greatest guitar album ever made but I aint heard nothing to come near it yet. I walk up to the first native I see and ask that question. Write down his answer, then on to another out of the way place, and so on. After visiting about 100 countries I would add up the score for each guitarist. Somehow I have trouble seeing Chet Atkins as the winner in, say, Chad. Great means well known all over, not just where we live, nor does it have anything to do with our opinion. |

Obviously the best that I have seen doesn't mean that he is the best in the world, he could be but that's a only a matter of opinion. I remember seeing Stefan Grossman back in '72, when you had to be black and/or be white and have long hair to be able to play 'the blues' and I was amazed at how he could play and then I remember hearing Mark Knopfler play and thought 'how can he do that ?' and here we are sometime later and I go and see Tommy Emmanuel, goodness gracious me and he has a couple of video's the thing is Kendall I don't think it's the natives who can tell you, possibly only the greats themselves. There are very few top-ranking guitar players that I have not heard, and although I promised myself I would not get involved in all this again, I have to say that McManus is so much better at what he does than anyone else who tries to play Celtic guitar that he does in fact merit the accolade of the best in the world. I mean Stefan Grossman is a neat blues player but not light years in front of all the other blues guys. Can we please let this thread die now, or at least have postings from people who have actually seen Tony play. He is on tour in the US at the moment, I have posted the dates twice so some of you should be able to see him. Murray |
