Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: WyoWoman Date: 10 Oct 00 - 10:58 PM I'd love to come to this concert, and Musicman, thank you very much for sharing "Sweet Wyoming Home" with us last night on HearMe. When I had interviewed for the job in Wyoming and couldn't make up my mind whether or not to leave New Mexico, I got in my car after work late one night and "Sweet Wyoming Home" was playing on the public radio station. I hadn't heard it before, and I took it as a sign from Heb'n that I was supposed to move. It's a lovely song... Now: How do I emigrate to B.C.? I'd be a great addition to your country ... really, I would. (Yet another friend of mine has gone for a visit and come back singing Vancouver's praises, telling me it would be the PERFECT PLACE for me ... I"m not certain why, but two friends have told me that. This particular friend described in glowing detail a wonderful old bar she'd found there, and THAT seemed to be her entire basis for telling me it was the perfect place for me. Ach, my reputation...) ww |

He wrote another one I always enjoyed and wanted to learn (still may) I think it's called A Quiet Faith in Man. Nice tune, great lyrics ... a refrain that goes something like; |

Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Margo Date: 12 Oct 00 - 07:48 PM You bet, Musicman. And he is doing a mini=songwriting workshop on Saturday. I'll be there with bells on. Well, maybe no bells, but I might bring my banjo :o) |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Night Owl Date: 13 Oct 00 - 01:54 AM Jed...the song you mentioned is on Bill's "Sandstone Cathedrals" cd/cassette. Musicman...I'm REALLY excited for you. There are a lot of us here who adore Bill's music and respect his dedication to keeping "folk" music alive AND the extraordinary schedule he keeps to share it with us. |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: JedMarum Date: 13 Oct 00 - 09:39 AM I was very lucky many years ago to do a songwriter's workshop with Bill at a festival in New Hampshire. He's a talented man and I am very happy to see him still playing far and wide. |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Musicman Date: 13 Oct 00 - 04:51 PM looking forward to our visit.... And...... I get to show him around our beautiful City of Vancouver before the concert (hope the weather is good....) |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: JedMarum Date: 13 Oct 00 - 05:44 PM Please give Bill my regards ... former New Englander. I don't s'pose he'll remember me, but we played some of the same places in those days ... John Henry's Hammer (Worcester), the Idler (Cambridge), others ... it'sbeen too long. I've been in Texas since 1986. I almost forgot I was a Yankee. |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Musicman Date: 13 Oct 00 - 06:33 PM will do jed....... anyone else???? |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Musicman Date: 23 Oct 00 - 01:48 PM sigh............... well..... he's off to the next stop..... what a wonderful 24hours!!! Like most songwriters I would guess... the music is totally a product of the man.... a very gentle soul, your friend in 5 mins for life and enjoys to share his life and experiences with you and listen to yours. Being able just to 'hangout' and show Bill around vancouver..... let him enjoy the city, share a coffee on a beach front patio grill watching the sailors with their boats and see his enjoyment in the relaxation.....Concert time and the 'thrill' of watching/introducing and watching people enjoy someone whom you respect musically... all because YOU brought him here.... Introducing him to your friends who have enjoyed his music for the first time and ......... and......... then talking till 3am, sharing a grilled cheese sandwich and beer just talking/ playing a bit of music.... Introduced him to the Mudcat too.... Did all this really happen????? can't wait till next year!!! hopefully more time to play a bit.... anyway... just thought I would share the excitement..... musicman |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Margo Date: 23 Oct 00 - 01:52 PM Musicman, I know what you mean! I went to the song writing workshop he did down here and it was worth far more than I paid! Bill is so unassuming, yet so great. Love to watch him play his guitar upside-down backwards! Margo |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Lyrical Lady Date: 23 Oct 00 - 03:37 PM DANG!!! Now I'm REALLY sorry I didn't go! Glad it turned out to be everything you hoped for! ....LL |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: Night Owl Date: 24 Oct 00 - 02:07 AM Paul, sounds like a WONDERFUL visit for both of you, and a great respite for Bill....thanks for giving us an update! but....but....but....you didn't say what he thought of Mudcats or if he knew about the database here...etc. etc. Margo....maybe if we moved to Oz....his "upside-down" finger-picking would be easier to learn. (BG) |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines in BC From: JedMarum Date: 24 Oct 00 - 09:00 AM What did he sing? Can you list a few of the songs? Heart of Stone? Roseville Fair? Sweet Wyoming Home? others? I checked the calendar at his website and don't see any Texas dates coming up, in the near future. I guess I'll just have to wait for Kerrville next May. |
