Pinewoods Series Concert to be held at Advent Lutheran Church. New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club proudly presents legendary folksinger-songwriter Bill Staines in concert at the Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway and West 93rd Street in New York City, on Thursday evening, May 10, 2001. The show begins at 8 PM. This concert is one in a series of six per year presented by Pinewoods and is free to club members. General public admission is $13. Seniors citizens and students pay only $9 each. Children¹s admission is just $6. The nearest subway stop is 96th Street on the 1, 2, 3, and 9 lines. For further information the public can call Evy Mayer at (718) 549-1344 after 11 AM. For more than 30 years Bill Staines has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concert halls, clubs, and coffee houses. Bill has become one of the most popular singers on the folk circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a gentle blend of wit and humor into his performances. Bill sings mostly his own songs, and his music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon. Among his best known compositions are A Place In the Choir, River, and Roseville Fair. Between his own creations, Bill intersperses songs ranging from traditional folk ballads to contemporary country, and he enjoys having the audience participate in many of the numbers. Bill is also acclaimed for his yodeling.

Subject: RE: Bill Staines concert in NYC From: Suffet Date: 25 Mar 01 - 09:04 PM To be sung to the tune of The Ball of Kerrymuir: Monica Lewinsky she'll be there, And taking careful pains, To explain to everybody, How she knows Bill Staines. Wha'll hae ye, lassie? Wha'll hae ye noo? The ane wha hae ye last time, He canna hae ye noo! Actually, if Monica does show up she'll have to pay $13 just like every other adult who is neither a student nor a senior citizen. However, if she joins the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, she can get in for free. In fact anyone can get that same deal. You need not have White House connections, past or present! --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Bill Staines concert in NYC From: GUEST Date: 26 Mar 01 - 01:08 PM To Joy, or any fortunate attendees, Please provide a post-concert report-thread. These are getting common, and a good tradition to encourage here, says me. And for pickers . . don't gaze too long at Bill's fingering. He plays left handed, upsidedown-backwards - with, I believe, standard tuning. I suppose you could say Hendricks style (Yes, I know how incredulous that sounds). When I watch, I wince. Being left handed, and having tried it, I know the contortions are uncomfortable. Yet, his touch is gliding, never a squeak, amazing! His bag is huge, yet I've never known him to turn down a request. He's the purest folkie I know. Absolutely dedicated to the artform. Seems to do it purely for the love of the song (ala Bob Gibson, rest his soul). And, not likely to get wealthy that way. Check the table and buy two if you can. And, if you like having a legend in your living room; he makes housecalls. I have a simple rule that "there's no such thing as too much banjo music" but I think I should add a corollary that says" "You can't have too much Staines in your library".
