Subject: BBRRAAWWMMPP-Spaw GetsHisVEGEMITE!!
From: catspaw49

When I arrived home after a few errands today, I was greeted by my youngest saying a 'package had arrived and Mom said it was from the other side of the world.'

I dropped everything else and ripped opened the package. There it was. Lovingly packed, my very own Vegemite had arrived from Helen in Australia. Helen also enclosed a wonderful picture and a 4 page handwritten letter. )Ya' know, there is still something wonderful about a handwritten letter--adds a personal thing we miss on the 'puters)---I noticed that the Customs office had a sticker there too-----Anyway, I made toast while reading the letter and as per instructions, used the less is more concept while spreading. Helen noted that someone she knew had used it for rooting plants and when I sniffed it, I had to admit it smelled like rooting hormone!!! Properly spread, Karen and I each had a piece of toast.

Now truthfully, what I wanted to say here was a whole monologue on how awful this stuff is....you know, "Yeast my ass...THIS is Kangaroo shit"...that kind of thing. Well..............I don't know how to say it, but uh......I LOVE THE STUFF!!!! I had another 2 slices on the spot!!! I gotta' find some world food joint that has this crappola!!! What a neat flavor...with this really fine aftertaste.

Y'all were right. There is no describing it. I can't think of anything that's even remotely similar. Since you were right about the taste, I presume you're right about the noxious emissions which may be produced later. Time will tell, but I wanted to warn everyone downwind of Ohio.

Helen my dear friend, thank you so much for the experience and also the letter and picture. What a place this is......really amzing!

Spaw

I somehow knew that if there was ever an American who would like this stuff, it'd be 'Spaw.

Now you've got to try Marmite, which is the same but different. And if you can't get it at all, I'll send some to you, and drive the customs wild.

It's great mixed in with Baked Beans as well.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but i have to say that Marmite is far, far superior to Vegemite.

OK, you Aussies can manage a wonderful Olympics, but when it comes to yeast-based spreads...

I can only say one thing:

Marmite

I know what you mean, 'spaw, I loved the stuff from the first taste m'self. Just wish the SO would keep the butter out of it. And I personally didn't notice any noxious southern breezes, but the kid won't hug me when I've been eating it.
I've had both the V stuff and the M stuff and they taste similar; I like the V stuff better, sorry Zeb.
Blessings,

Spaw I live in Pittsburgh. This just ain't cool. Please take a roadtrip to Central PA before you finish the jar, I don't think they'd notice in Philly;-> LOL

Truth be told, I'm a vegetarian and tend to eat a lot of gassy foods. Among my favorites; hummus, black beans, lentils, broccoli and habanero sauce on everything. I probably can't compete with you, Spaw, but I've found myself in a few of those elevators with one other person where every one knows who to blame.

geeeziz, 'Spaw, if I thought you would like it so much I would've sent a *big* jar. I just thought it would be sitting in your food cupboard for the next 50 years as a curious artefact from the other side of the world. You'll reach the point where your body will just say that you have had enough, and then a few days later you'll get the urge again.

It's a tough way to become an honorary Ozzie but you've made the grade, mate!

I'm surprised it arrived so quickly - I sent it on Friday 6th October so that's not bad.

Tell you what, some American friends are coming over here this Friday (no I mean some friends are coming over from America - one American, one Ozzie) and they will be going back in about a month. They live in Florida, so if you can't get a supply I'll send a big jar over with them and they can post it to Ohio from Florida.

Of course, the Ozzie friend might get sorely tempted to run off with the big jar of Vegemite, and I'll just get this innocent sounding e-mail saying that he "can't understand how it got lost in the post on the way to Ohio, but you know, these things happen". He's been living in non-Vegemite land for 18 months now so the cold turkey must have been very traumatic for him.

I'm really pleased that you actually like it - it was worth the fun of packaging it up and sending it over, even if Micca did call me a "pillock" in another thread, and even if all the residents downwind of Ohio hate me for the rest of their lives. (The trick for stopping complaints is a lot like the garlic-eaters trick - just get everone else around you to eat it and no-one will be able to smell anything out of the ordinary.)

Helen

Marmite is easy to find in many Ontario stores, so if it can cross the Atlantic to come here, maybe there are some places closer to you Spaw and Gary T. (I don't know where you are Gary T.) where you can get it. Definitely superior to Vegemite.

I've tried marmite. It must be an acquired taste. I've never managed to acquire it. Maybe vegemite is better. Somebody once said that you should try anything except incest and folk-dancing so I guess I gotta try vegemite to be fair

Please no falling out between Marmite and Vegemite. Brothers (and sisters) in arms against a host of barbarians who would hold both in equal disdain.

In any case when I say Marmite, I tend to mean some cutprice own-brand clone in a supermarket anyway, which tastes just the same. I haven't yet found a clone of Vegemite yet, and the real stuff is a bit more pricy, and I'm a scrimper. (And I like the Marmity taste better, since it's what I'm used to...)

Chris, I hear you. The thing is, one need not let the mind run that far, once can let it stop just at what I said, for it leaves SO MANY possiblities open... all so deliciously nasty... all leading to [eeeeegheeeewwww....]

I generally cover that with this sort of reply: I do not need that level of detail.

'Course that's how the prayer musta went wrong.

LOL. Spaw, converted. (Kidding, Pat, honest!)

Yes, there really was Vegemite this morning on the breakfast table..... but there was also blackcurrant jam and apricot conserve, so you takes yer money....

Personally the only good thing about marmite is that a) it's a piece of pie when playing trival pursuit ~ as in what is a marmite.... and b) to get marmite you have to brew beer.....

LTS who hates the stuff.

Whose Line Is It Anyway???

Well boys and girls, since we now have a home computer (albeit with some frustrating problems yet to debug), this time around I have parked it in the living room. Instead of upstairs dangerously close to the bedroom-- where I might find it too tempting when I can't sleep, or where we might regret the HearMe mic being so near the Sugar Dog Luhhhv Bed. 'Nuff said-- anyway-- what a boon this will be, I'm thinking, computer right at the autoharp table, by the big heavy metal amp, yeah!!!

So in case we ever get the bugs worked out, you know, we can do HearMe with both me and Hardi, and Artsy D Lemur too when she visits, and maybe our jam pals when they come over each month... Oh yeah, you will love them... me and Hardi are the NORMAL members...

Anyway! Hardi is over to my right in the recliner, the TV is on, it's muted (I forget why), and I am winding down my mudtime for the day, and out of the corner of my eye I see this loopy, slack-jawed, secret little smirk spreading into a full grin on tired old Hardi's Sunday face. (I have seen this grin on his dad's lookalike face watching Maidenform commercials. Gal's, I know you understand.) "What, honey?" I innocently ask. "You can turn up the sound you know...."

The TV is swiveled just out of my line of sight, even with eyes in the back of my head.... Hardi sez, "Well, it's an announcement from the University announcement screen, to come see the Wind Ensemble, and all I can think of is Vegemite!" We crack up.

Spaw, I used to think it was the music that made Mudcat the universal arena for world peace, so I geared up for HearMe. Now I realize, no, it's the condiments. So far yet to go.

Having spent the better part of the day at the ER....Karen had a bad crash on her bike while cycling with the kids....the "effects" of the V began to kick in and combined with last night's supper..........I gotta' tell ya', this about the foulest smelling poot fest I can recall. On our way home I stopped by a shoot-n-scoot to grab some Coke. AS I walked through I was in one continual silent rip.....like air slowly escaping from a balloon, and the whole joint stank by the time I got back to the front. As I left, the clerk propped the front door open!!! Karen and I cracked up. She's OK, after X-Rays, nothing broken, but severely bruised and scraped....AND of course she had to ride 40 miles in the van with me.

I notice this room is starting to smell real bad too. TOMORROW, the Cream Cheese!!!

Sorry to hear about Karen's crash and glad to hear there is no serious damage Spaw. Vegemite (and Marmite) is supposed to be rich in B vitamins though, so maybe if she ate some it would help her deal with the stress of the bruises and other upsets! in her local environment.

Enjoy the Vegi/cheese cocktail. By the way it's also brilliant with Cheddar cheese in sandwiches.

A band of white-coats, comin' after meeee.... comin' for to carry me straight to the third flooooor..... To the ward with her! Strait jackets for all! (I'm allowed to joke about it, trust me!) She won't quit that LAFFIN!

Hey! So what if you have gol-danged Vegemite! Who needs stinkin' Vegemite!!!!

LOL!! Exeunt, stage left!

Umm, before I go... in those, um, tender moments.... you know... if Karen's not too bruised... if she's had too much Power-Vee--- tell her I said (woman to woman) to go ahead and let fly. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

Please God, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... I live too close to Earls Court (well, in the same city) for that to be funny!!! I've been known to let rip a few fragrant botty burps myself (Micca, just don't even think about it......) and the act of going into shops and dropping little stink bombs was called retail cruising. I used to do it a lot and then look disgustedly at the person next to me, put down what I was looking at and walk off, fanning the air.... worked every time!!

Go for it Spaw, the ozone needs all the help it can get!! Besides, in Rotorua, NZ you'd be a great air freshener...... you have to have been there.

No, I think she is referring to the infamous #2 which the Vegemite seems to effect.

BTW, I just had a brunch and something my compatriots in OZ have never tried. I had a couple of eggs and some SCRAPPLE which you may remember from previous discussions and I spread my toast with Vegemite. A bite of each in your mouth at the same time is simply superb!!! Vegemite and scapple are made for each other!!!

Awaiting results from the other end.

No Spaw, that's just your warped mind again. I did not specifically mean that at all tho it is OK with me that you take it that way.

In fact I was making so many jokes at once on that line I can't quite explain it now. It had to do with catching Spaw up in his terrible typing due, I hope, to over-excitement about the V'mite. In my post I simply misspelled anything I thought I could that would leave a ot of joke possibilities hanging. MPD was included in there! I hadn't thought of the one Spaw said, but then that's the beauty of open-ended (hahaha) jokes.

Obviously he and I are still not QUITE on the same wavelength, because the Lord has apparently not seen fit to provide me with either V'mite or M'mite, and so I have to actually LEARN from Spaw instead of communing with him in the mystical fashion I think these products would induce. Just as well, trust me! And it's going OK, kinda slow. (but I'm coming along nicely, don'tcha think Unka Spaw?) Just as his conversion via the 'Mite Gawd seems to help him communicate with my ******ly a**.

What I would like to know is how these products change brain chemistry. Obviously it's an enhancement, but I want to know the mechanisms involved. I think we could cut way back on various meds in common use with a little more of these, and of course Limburger Cheese could not but help. Is 'Mite good on stinky cheese or is it better with a sweet, clean taste as foil?

I still don't see any beer, either. Bogarts the 'Mite AND the beer. Bet he shares with the possum!

Praise - it's probably all those B vitamins. Leads to an unjustified sense of euphoria (or 'high'), although that could also be a by-product of oxygen deprivation from breathing in the chemicals coming out the 'other end'.

Little Hawk - rum................ or Apricot Brandy. Sun-ripened fruit is always better than anything else. Mmmmmmmmm...

ROFL. If I get this much return on investment for a jar of Vegemite & a stamp maybe I should be starting up an international 'Mite distribution project to alleviate the negative effects of 'Mite deprivation throught Mudcattia.

I've decided to humour the Marmitians and try the stuff out, in the spirit of inter-world goodwill, after all Marmitia and Vegemitia should make every effort to cooperate. I'll let you know as soon as I have comparative data to share with you all.

They are very similar. I think Marmite is a little saltier and sharper in flavour- has anyone done a double blind V/M taste test??

I too was brought up on Marmite, but when I emigrated to Australia in the early 70's it was unavailable and Vegemite was the only alternative. After eating it for 3 years with absolutely no ill effects, I returned to England on holiday looking forward to my reunion with Marmite.

What a disappoinment! In no way did it measure up to Vegemite. Yes it is sharper in flavour and more salty than Marmite. Vegemite is far mor subtle in its flavouring.

Of course Marmite is now freely available on supermarket shelves in Australia, and over theyears I have met many British Expats who have been converted to vegemite. The strange thing is, I have never met anyone who has been converted From Vegemite To Marmite.

Cheers

Helen, before you spend time & money buying Marmite DON'T DO IT. For someone brought up on V, the other stuff tastes AWFUL.

It's a lot of years ago but my mother once bought M just for a change. After we had tried it & gagged a couple of times that little English jar just rotted in the larder.

Of course we don't like English beer either....

Aussie cricketers eat Vegemite. What on earth have the English cricketers been eating lately??? Or not even lately.

There has been a small jar of Marmite in the back of our cupboard for a couple of years.Spurred on by Spaw's positive experience,I popped open the jar and smeared some of this stuff on a piece of toast.First of all, smear isn't quite the right term.It has the consistency of warm tar,so you sort of blot it on the toast. Now,the taste is..is...well,if you don't have any actual Marmite,I can tell you how to approximate the taste.

1) Take 4 cubes of vegetable bouillion, and mash to a pulpy mass

2)Mix with 1 tablespoon water to a glutinous,thick,gummy consistency

3)Apply to toast with butter knife

4)Remove Marmite residue from knife using a mild solvent and rag

5)Dispose of rag

6)Dispose of Marmite-tainted toast

7)Dispose of balance of jar of Marmite

Now,I kind of like salty stuff, but this...this congealed matter ...excuse me,I've got to go down another glass of cold water.

Please forgive my 'stepping' on your thread (I've lurked for years, and utilised your db a great deal); but I figured I'd offer my help, where I could. 'Cost Plus' is a fairly large yuppie-chain 'merchandise' store. They sell everything from furniture made in Burmese sweatshops, Australian wines, and yes; even two different sized jars of Vegemite. They're all over the southwest and California. I have never seen Marmite, though I will look (have a dekko) next time I'm out that way.

And as for myself, I used to eat it all the time as a child, and just thought it was what every kid in the States ate. I grew up, and hadn't had it in years; found it on the shelves at aforementioned Cost Plus, spread on bread, as I'd recalled... ...I have to agree, pedestrian as it sounds; kangaroo shit does come to mind. 8) Sorry...

This is beginning to sound like a how-to manual for using Vegemite homeopathically. "Just a few molecules." You might not mind having sh*t on your toast, if it were just a few molecules. This doesn't mean either sh*t or Vegemite are worth eating, however. At least Vegemite doesn't carry E.Coli bacteria, anyway.

Marmite's good with peanut butter too - but whatever they got up to a Llanstock, I wouldn't advise mixing it, or Vegemite, with "blackcurrant jam and apricot conserve". But I'm off to try it with honey, following Alan's lead. If it's good with Vegemite, maybe it'll be just that bit better with Marmite. I'll report back, if I live.

I've never noticed a fart effect from Marmite. Given the quantities involved I'm sceptical...

Yes, Alan, that's an interesting effect, which I might grow to like. The proportion of honey and Mar/Vegi/mite is clearly critical.

Other combinations that work much better than you'd think - peanut butter and golden syrup; jam and cheese.

Like most Aussies I was reared on Vegemite but gave it up some time ago because of it's sodium content. I used to travel with a work colleague who who spread it on toasted raisn bread for breakfast. I would scoff at him for mixing the sweet and savoury tastes, but after trying it I must admit it's delicious.

I occasionally add a teaspoon or two to a beef casserole or spag. sauce if I think it needs a bit more oomph, but only if there's no other salt in the pot.

I'm no fartologist but IF the yeasty microbes in Vegemite are stimulating the creation of additional alcohol and CO2 in your insides then enjoy it while you can. After about two weeks the gut will get used to this new form of natural substance abuse and will produce its own bacteria to neutralise it. Regards, John

McGrath,

I assume that you aren't including V/M-mite in your other interesting combinations.

I love peanut butter & lettuce sandwiches. When I was talking to a few colleagues at lunchtime, years ago, about peanut butter/jam, p-nut b/lettuce, p-nut b/tomato combinations someone asked "don't you like peanut butter - do you keep trying to disguise the taste with other things?", but it goes really well with lots of other stuff.

Cheese & jam is good, too. I haven't tried V-mite with honey, or cream cheese, or.. or... but I have tried it on a pan-fried cheese sandwich. It works if you put the V-mite on the outsides of the bread for that, too.

V13,

After having fruit bats poo-ing on our cars & other paintwork we have now decided to market it as a new, environmentally friendly, super paint stripper. It can strip paint from a hundred paces. (All that acidic fruit!)

Helen
