Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Mar 02 - 03:57 PM When shots are fired in a city center, with lots of tall buildings around, or inside a warehouse, airport terminal, shopping mall, or other large building, the shots can be heard clearly but there is never an echo. Consequently the hero is never confused about where the shots are coming from or how many people are shooting at him. (Conspiracy theorists take note.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 12 Mar 02 - 05:06 PM The black guy always gets killed first.
Teenagers who go "all the way" get stabbed. In the old "B" Westerns, the heroes could beat up a whole bar full of guys and never mess their hair.
And the buttons on the shirts they wore were imitation pearly, with arrows stitched on the top of the pockets Jerry |
Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: Little Hawk Date: 12 Mar 02 - 06:28 PM Yes, the black guy gets killed first...UNLESS it's a blacksploitation film like Shaft or many, many others with a black star as the hero. THEN the black guy, who is incredibly cool (despite having a working vocabulary of less than 20 really dumb phrases, and at the most, 2 facial expressions) does the killing...THEN everybody else gets killed, but the black guy is totally indestructible, cos HE IS THE MAN!!! YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT, SUCKAH??? HE IS THE MAN!!! Plus...he's a mouthy, arrogant jerk, with the sexual appetite of a deranged rooster...and yet deep down he's humble at the same time because he knows how his "bruthas and sistahs" have suffered in a racist society! This is a really tricky combination of attitudes to portray in one human being, but be assured our man can pull it off...COS HE IS THE MAN!!! Sheesh. All I can say is this was NOT what I had in mind back in the sixties when my heroes and my generation fought to establish equal civil rights for black Americans. It's pathetic, and Hollywood is enormously to blame for perpetuating these wretched stereotypes of human behaviour...to such effect that people are growing up imitating it because it's what they see on their TV screens daily. I really appreciated Geordie in Star Trek, because he did exemplify the above stereotypes, but acted like a normal human being. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: Little Hawk Date: 12 Mar 02 - 06:39 PM SINSULL - It's "pterodactyl" as far as I know...and...I think you are quite right about the horses, it's risky approaching them from the rear. I am going to restrict my activities to women in the future. :-) I can well believe that Jurassic Park III is a giant yawn. If those movies had put acting and plot up there with special effects, they might have been on a par with "Citizen Kane", but they didn't figure it was necessary to do that in order to sell tickets. I've seldom seen worse acting and a dumber plot, except in B-grade movies of the 40's and 50's, some of which remain almost untouchable in that regard. Hollywood has never been afraid to underestimate the intelligence of the public. - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: Bobert Date: 12 Mar 02 - 10:12 PM Danged, I thought this thread was about the important stuff like how to sneak a six pack and pizza into the theater. Or how to see 12 movies for 5 bucks. Or how to be the one who makes the rude comments but is creative enough to make everyone in the joint think it was the bald guy in front of you. Nevermind, the bobert's going to go somewhere else to play... |
Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: RangerSteve Date: 13 Mar 02 - 07:55 AM Cops shoot warning shots into the air, and apparently, the bullets just keep going into outer space. In reality, the bullets come back down, and they come down at the same speed (or close to it) that they went up. And they can still kill a person. Or, in the city, they could enter a skyscraper window and kill someone. One of the things they couldn't drill into us enough at the police academy was: DON'T FIRE WARNING SHOTS. IF YOU AREN'T AIMING THE GUN, YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THE BULLET IS GOING. So don't try this at home, kids. |
Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: Little Hawk Date: 13 Mar 02 - 04:44 PM Shit. I left the word "not" out of the following sentence above in a previous post of mine.... It should read: "I really appreciated Geordie in Star Trek, because he did NOT exemplify the above stereotypes, but acted like a normal human being." Fortunately, no one seems to mind, thus far... I bet this is how people inadvertently launch missiles too, which is why there are normally several steps involved in the process. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Unwritten Rules of the Movies II From: GUEST,SlickerBill Date: 13 Mar 02 - 05:00 PM Actually I saw someone get killed by a falling bullet in a movie the other day; it was "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt. SB |
