Just thought I'd mention that, whilst doing some research for one of my quizzes, I hit on a site which claimed that Roll Alabama, Roll was written by Frank Townshend. My post, containing a link to the site is here.

A couple of excellent threads on shanty origins:

Shanty: Billy O'Shea has recently been revived.

Lyr Add: Hob-i-derry Dando traces the song from Welsh love-song, through shanty to the modern "Cosher Bailey" beloved of rugby clubs.

Lots missing on the song origins drop down.

Why can't I find my favorite song, "Old (Dog) Blue"?

Or my wife's favorite, "(El) (Senor) Don Gato"?
A hell of a lot of posts on that one.

or "Miserlou"? Arabic, Sephardic, Greek and tin pan alley origins discussed there.

I could go on- or is the list for selected popular hits only? Of the first four I looked for, the only one that showed up was "Bile dem Cabbage."
