Subject: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Mrrzy Date: 27 Mar 02 - 09:02 AM Thought the old thread was getting kind of long... |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Mar 02 - 01:34 PM Yes, it had amazing longevity. It is American foreign, domestic, military, and economic policies that are shameful...NOT Americans. Most Americans are simply among the many millions of ordinary people worldwide who are affected adversely by those policies on a regular basis, whether they know it or not. It's like a Hollywood disaster movie out there...only even stranger than that. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: MMario Date: 27 Mar 02 - 01:39 PM very well summed up LH. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: SharonA Date: 27 Mar 02 - 01:46 PM Haven't we given Janet's troll-post enough attention yet? |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Wesley S Date: 27 Mar 02 - 01:59 PM SharonA - Apparently not. My guess is good for 50 or 60 more posts. I hope I'm wrong. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: DougR Date: 28 Mar 02 - 12:41 AM Nah, let run. L.H., Mrzzy, MMario, and others are having so much fun bashing the U.S., why deprive them? :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 28 Mar 02 - 12:54 AM I don't know where you get the idea that people find admitting shame for anything to be "fun", DougR. I think, when one feels shame of any sort, one does it with a heavy heart. There's no fun in it at all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Troll Date: 28 Mar 02 - 07:57 AM When people go on and on about how ashamed they feel about something or keep pointing out the perceived defects of others, surely they gain SOME perverse pleasure from it, Carol. Otherwise, why go on? I find it hard to believe that their motives are purely altruistic. Just my opinion, of course. troll |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: SharonA Date: 28 Mar 02 - 10:42 AM I'm with Troll. If you're all that ashamed, don't tell us; tell the politicians you're ashamed of! |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: SharonA Date: 28 Mar 02 - 10:43 AM (Sorry; that should be "...of whom you are ashamed"!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 Mar 02 - 11:38 AM Since this is near the top I'll go against my better judgement and add something. Personally I'm a bit 'ashamed' that so many folks think there actually IS a Janet (who started the first one) and addressed the obvious long time UK sillycat (who knows what flame buttons to push...just check out the many other anti-yank threads with similar headers) in a serious way. I LUV the political discussions here, but boy it would be nice to see that kind dry up quickly. Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Mar 02 - 12:27 PM Yikes! I've been fingered as a member of "The Gang of Three". Shouldn't Fionn, McGrath, and several others be in there too? Oh, it's lonely at the top... :-) - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: InOBU Date: 28 Mar 02 - 12:54 PM I feel left out of the left,... Larry of the left out left. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Mar 02 - 03:25 PM Yeah. There's nothing worse than being left out... It's worse than being singled out! Where is MAV when we need him? - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: michaelr Date: 28 Mar 02 - 03:31 PM The horse is dead. You can stop beating it now... |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: DougR Date: 28 Mar 02 - 04:31 PM Apologies to those who felt slighted. There is limited space to write in though, and there wouldn't be enough to list all of you. That's what one gets when one begins nameming names, someone is always left out and gets their feelings hurt. :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 28 Mar 02 - 04:54 PM Troll and SharonA, I don't think most of the people DougR mentioned are having fun in this context, though I certainly could be wrong about that.
SharonA, I think it can sometimes be constructive to express how one feels in this sort of a context as well as in the way that you suggest. We each have to follow our own conscience about that sort of thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: SharonA Date: 28 Mar 02 - 05:49 PM Carol: I agree that it can be constructive to express one's feelings in this sort of context. But I think Troll has a point that "[going] on and on about how ashamed [one] feel[s] about something or keep[s] pointing out the perceived defects of others" slowly evolves from the expression of feelings into the venting of anger and frustration, which is pleasurable. The perversity of that pleasure comes into play when one is satisfied with simply venting one's feelings again and again about the same situation instead of doing anything constructive to change that situation for the better. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 28 Mar 02 - 06:17 PM Well, Sharon, I don't see MMario's name on the first thread at all, and I only see Mrrzy's name twice, so I don't see how anyone can suggest that they're going on and on about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: SharonA Date: 28 Mar 02 - 07:59 PM Carol: I'm not the one who named names! |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 28 Mar 02 - 08:06 PM I think we're going around in circles. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: GUEST,SharonA at the library Date: 28 Mar 02 - 08:38 PM Hi, again, Carol. What I was trying to say in my last post is that I had made a generalized statement agreeing with Troll's generalized statement. I didn't mean to target the individuals singled out by DougR, or anyone else. I didn't take notice of who posted the most on Part One of this thread; I just know that it was well over 100 posts, and I got the sense that a lot of the statements made there had already been made on a lot of other political threads. All I'm saying is that when complaining becomes an end in itself, it's fun but it's not productive. Hope that's a little more clear (...and now you know how long it takes me to log off and go to the library! *G*). I'm sorry if I offended anyone; it certainly was not my intention to do so. Sharon |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: DougR Date: 28 Mar 02 - 10:45 PM It is becoming more and more difficult to post with tongue firmly implanted in cheek without someone taking offense. I really don't believe L. H. or others I used as an example in the post above were offended when I included them in the post. I took their replies to be as tongue in cheek as was my original post. Sigh. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 28 Mar 02 - 11:40 PM There's an art to it DougR. Maybe if you spent some time in Canada, you could hone, refine, and polish your "tongue in cheek" skills. I'm sure Little Hawk could give you some lessons ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Amergin Date: 29 Mar 02 - 01:48 PM I am ashamed to be American....I am also ashamed to be human....I really want to be a dog.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Mrrzy Date: 29 Mar 02 - 02:02 PM Thanks, CarolC! All I think I did was try to be nice and make a continued thread... I don't recall doing much if any bashing, so thanks for taking the time to check me out and save me doing it! |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: InOBU Date: 29 Mar 02 - 02:26 PM Doug! Of course our reply was tongue in cheek... and Good Dog! Amergin! CHeers... Larry, sit Amergin, sit... good doggie! |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Mar 02 - 02:55 PM Hey, Doug...not to worry! I understood your humour entirely. I find the best remedy for when people insist on taking one's humorous remarks dead seriously and getting all upset about it is this: Say something so completely silly in response that only a complete moron could take it seriously...and if such a moron surfaces, then do the following: Agree with all their accusations about how awful you are and request more "praise and encouragement" along the same lines...since your appetite for abuse has, at that point, merely been whetted... :-) Presently, they will either get the joke...or they'll go away and find someone else to get righteously angry about. Do what Jesus did, in other words...turn the other cheek. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Mar 02 - 03:00 PM I guess when he ran out of "cheeks" they just nailed his ass up then....... Spaw(:<)) |

Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Mar 02 - 03:53 PM I agree Steve.......The whole thread was a sendup to begin with and it's really "evolved" but it sure is good for a laugh or two.... Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: SharonA Date: 29 Mar 02 - 03:53 PM And on Good Friday yet! You guys should be ashamed of yourselves! *BiggerG* |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Mar 02 - 04:05 PM Oh, Spaw, you are so shameless! :-D I would fear for your immortal soul, but not to worry...they would never dare ship you off to a place with open fires all around. It would be like a reenactment of the Hindenburg disaster. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 29 Mar 02 - 04:33 PM Glad to be of service, Mrrzy. Although I have to admit that I have no idea what these other guys are going on and on about. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: InOBU Date: 29 Mar 02 - 05:34 PM Yes, this thread should be renamed, something like is Amergin a good dog, who's a lefist and will spaw blow up if he goes to hell? Will that all fit on a thread name???????? Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Mar 02 - 05:42 PM We really need to pressure Max to make longer thread names possible. This is a matter that needs to be dealt with! - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: michaelr Date: 30 Mar 02 - 01:56 AM I can't believe you guys... The horse is still dead. Really! |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: CarolC Date: 30 Mar 02 - 01:59 AM You didn't really read this thread, did you michaelr? Nobody's talking about that horse any more. They're talking about dogs now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: InOBU Date: 30 Mar 02 - 07:47 AM WHAT horse? Did I miss something? We Anglo Irish are supposed to have a horse as part of our cultural heritage, I missed mine! Is there a horse here now? I don't want it if it is dead... but, let me have a look, maybe it is just asleep. Can I keep in the livingroom Genie? Can it climb four flights of stairs? Can we feed it ricearoni? Does it speak ... like MR ED? Is it house broken? Does it eat recording equiptment? Can I name it something clever or does it have a name already? Mom's family are Lovari, they are really good horse doctors, maybe we can save it? HUH? CAN I???? Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: artbrooks Date: 30 Mar 02 - 08:27 AM Larry, Jenn's Anglo-Jewish, and she's always wanted a horse to keep in the bathtub. I guess wanting a horse comes out of the Anglo side, huh? If its dead, I'll take it...if it hasn't been dead too long, that is. Personally, I've always thought horses were mostly only good for eating-must be the French in me coming out. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: InOBU Date: 30 Mar 02 - 10:59 AM Depends how gamy the horse is, after a while, they are only good for glue. I actually have a pair of horse rib bones, I play, true story, found them on a beach in Ireland in the 70's ... attached to the whole skelaton... Cheers, and bon apitite, Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: GUEST,Mr. Ed Date: 30 Mar 02 - 11:34 AM I am getting very uncomfortable with all this talk about horses this and that. We have real lives, real problems, and I don't think all this is funny. Flog a dead horse in deed! Nnnneeeeegghhhhhbbbbbfffffllllllwwwwww, Mr. Ed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Big Mick Date: 30 Mar 02 - 11:40 AM I am on an extremely busy cycle, find a few minutes to pop in and what do I find? The "Reasons Not to Support Mudcat" and this horseshit trolling thread still going..........I love this place, and really like most of you, but.........geeziz......you need to go practice your music. LOL. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Mar 02 - 05:47 PM Absolutely! It's bloody irresponsible for people to keep refreshing this thread with total BS about horses. You won't catch me doing that. No way! Stop horsing around and talk about something that actually matters, something of prime importance in our lives, something weighty and musical at the same time... Like the Dylan/Shatner sessions in L.A. back in the late 70's... - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: Continued: Shame and Americans From: GUEST Date: 13 Apr 02 - 05:17 AM Isn't there a song or a book about the Ugly American but it isn't about how they look but about how they act? |
