My son the movie buff (well, minor in film studies, major in English) mentions "Psycho" as his favourite instrumental score and "The Graduate" as a good one-artist score. My wife likes "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" (lots of other things wrong with that movie, but the music was good). For folkies, I'd mention "Matewan" (Hazel Dickens' graveside hymn is breathtaking) as well as the aforementioned "Songcatcher", O Brother Where Art Thou" and "Barry Lyndon" (The Chieftains' first score, if memory serves).

I always loved the soundtrack from "Genevieve" was it Tommy Reilly or Larry Adler who composed and played the Harmonica? Another harmonica melody was the theme from "Shane" one of the all-time great Western Movies.

Fred, I just looked it up on the Internet. There's lots of James Gang stuff out there. I also have some books at home - in particular, Time-Life had a really good Old West series several years ago. I believe it's out of print now but used volumes are easy to come by.

Shifting into the quasi-classical:

The soundtrack for Kieslowski's "Red" is very, very beautiful, all of it composed by Preizner, supposedly by an 18th century composer -- the main theme is a Ravel like Bolero, completely compelling. I am not sure that there is a record of the music from "The Double Life of Veronique" -- the singing by the woman dubbing for Irene Jacob appears and reappears in Kieslowski's movies. The famous "Symphony for Europe" in "Blue" is a disaster.

The music for "Brideshead Revisited" withstands repeated listenings, certainly good for backgrounds.

Real classical: The music from "Un Coeur en Hiver" (released as a soundtrack album -- Ravel, Debussy quartets) is excellent.

There is a brilliant use of music (Schubert) in "Minority Report" -- John Williams at work (most of whose stuff I cannot abide).

Best movie album of all time? Easy. "A Hard Day's Night".

yours, Peter T.

hmmm, I see a lot of movie soundtracks here but not a lot of tv shows. Which genre do better soundtracks come from? Comedy or drama tv shows? I think you get more original stuff in the dramas. It's easier to showcase new music.

Wow, I cann't believe that no one has mentioned the soundtrack from "Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story"!

It has one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE classical songs on it. The tune has even been used in the previews of other films such as Tom Hanks' "Cast Away".

I am sure that some of you (if not all) will scoff when I say that another soundtrack that some of my friends from my bagpipe band and I like to listen to the "Braveheart" soundtrack.

Kim C, how much information do you have? I'm just relying on my memory, when I was a kid and shortly after Butch Cassidy came out, I looked through books on outlaws and found the Miller bros. My dad dug out some geneology that only said they were rumored to have been in the James gang, but there was a Pinkerton photo of Clell (?) in a chair with a bullethole in his head, and he looks exactly like my uncle Joe, just smaller. Since then we have more extensive stuff, but I haven't got into it much. I was misremembering Dennis, I could have it wrong--can you tell me anything else? My e-mail is Mtmesis@wmconnect.com if you have a minute or two. anyway, thanks, I've been telling it wrong.

kat, it was John Barry, whom I mentioned above (Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa), also scored many of the Bond films.

Ellen Ford, I loved the film Men with Guns, but I can't for the life of me remember the music as being all that good. Vive la difference, as they say!

The Long Riders is one of my all-time favorite movies. Yes, it was Dennis and Randy Quaid. And it is now available on DVD.

It was the first VHS I ever bought.

Fred, Ed Miller is referred to as Ed Miller in all the historical information I can find. Is it possible that Edward was a middle name? It was very common for people to go by their middle names in the 19th century.

There was a short-lived sitcom in the U.S. called "Sweet Surrender", starring the actress Dana Delany (This was before "China Beach".) Mostly forgettable, I suppose, but I particularly enjoyed the synth-driven theme music.

Other TV themes, off the top of my head, that I enjoyed were "St. Elsewhere", "Newhart" (the series with Larry, Darryl, and Darryl,) and the British series "The Sandbaggers". "The Avengers" was also great not only for the theme but for the entire soundtrack. Also liked the theme and soundtrack for the PBS (produced by BBC?) "Miss Marple" episodes. I guess I could go on and on.

Haven't got my thoughts together regarding movies, but I would certainly second the vote for "Hear my Song"!

I loved the soundtrack to boogie nights--all that 70's stuff I could never have remembered without hearing again. Too funny. Then Magnolia had that ponderous music that kept saying Something Serious Is Going On Here--but I never figured out what it was.

The Sting

The Electric Horseman, except for the part where the blonde sang in the movie; I can't remeber if she is on the soundtrack or not.

If I remember rightly the music in the Reivers was really good, too.

We've been watching old James Bond movies and were laughing at how out-dated they are, but also at how fun the music was, esp. the way it was used to emphasise a scene.

TV...great music, especially over closing credits, in Northern Exposure. More currently, music from the HBO special series, Six Feet Under.

Movies...from the early 80's maybe, an oddball movie called Zandy's Bride, taken from a wonderful book on the early Big Sur area of California, great scenery and a great acoustic music driven score, written--of all people--by Michael Franks. also agree in spades with Latcho Drom...

Hey Allan. I love guitar driven soundtracks but more moody guitar and twangy kinda stuff. Like twin peaks used in the show. That's why I think Push, Nevada, will have cool music too. Set in the desert. Washed out scenes sometimes, vivid and weird in others. Check out the pics on the site (http://abc.abcnews.go.com/primetime/push/index.html)

Now no sniggering please, but back in the 70's there was a film called The Sensualist, which was considered to be almost pornographic back then. It was basically an Adults Only version of Love Sory.

The point is, as soon as I saw the movie I immediately went out and bought the soundtrack, which consists mainly of some very moody, jazzy harmonica and guitar playing.

Still got it.

Allan

Blackadder 2! YES!!!

Films wise I can recommend "Evita" and "Oliver!" (well, they are musicals!) or any of the Disney ones, especially Fantasia 2000.

Mind you, if you're wanting instrumental soundtracks, the one for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorceror's) Stone" is fantastic.

I agree with Ellen Ford, that soundtracks should be listened to while watching the film, but here's my favourites, anyway:

The Royal Tenenbaums. A mixture of Mark Mothersbaugh's score, and previously recorded stuff by Elliot Smith, Nico, the Ramones, Bob Dylan, The Clash, Nick Drake, and others. The cd's actually missing some of the more important songs used in the movie, but most of my favourites are on it. See the movie, though. :)

Breaking the Waves. The soundrack mostly has the music played in these short intermission-type things between the "chapters" of the movie. I actually don't even have the cd of this soundtrack, but I listen to it when I watch the dvd. :)

The Big Lebowski. Yma Sumac, Kenny Rogers, Townes VanZandt, Elvis Costello, Captain Beefheart. Woohoo! >:)

Time of the Gypsies/Dom za vešanje. Really cool Emir Kusturica movie, with an even cooler traditional/Goran Bregoviæ soundtrack. The cd I have of it isn't the best, though: It's a combination of music from DVZ and stuff from another film Bregoviæ worked on, and some of the best songs from DVZ are missing. :( Still, swell enough that I bought it. But, again, see the movie.

TV...

The Sopranos. Never bought any of the Sopranos soundtrack cds, and probably won't, but great music to hear while watching the show.

The Prisoner! God, I love this show. Got all the soundtracks. The opening theme is the best tv theme song, ever.

Hmm... That's all I can think of, for soundtracks. I like lots of tv show theme songs, though: "Boss of Me" by They Might Be Giants, from Malcolm in the Middle. The theme from "Rockford Files." The themes from the first two "Blackadder" series. The theme from "What's Happening!!" (Or maybe I just liked the show. The song gets stuck in my head alot, anyway. And I still occasionally enter rooms with "Hey HEY hey!") The theme song from "King of the Hill," by a band called "The Refreshments," I think. Tons more...

I kind of liked last of the mohicans also, at least the fiddle part. A lot of soundtracks and even commercials recently seem to have a Philip Glass surface quality about them.

But Beadie, about The Long Riders, the Miller brothers were not-so-great great uncles of mine, were actually Frank and Clell--they changed Frank in the movie I guess because of Frank James. I seem to remember they were played by Randy and some other Quaid nobody ever heard of, not Dennis. Was it Dennis? Not to be touchy about my thuggy ancestors, but they were portrayed as the goofiest most cowardly gang members.

It seems to me that movie music should be listened to while watching the movie - that's sort of the point and the artistry of the genre.

If you are looking for SCORED movie music then I think the best movie scores are the ones composed by Bernard Herrmann who did Alfred Hitchcock movies among others. (if you want to appreciate Herrmann's artistry, turn the sound off and on while watching some of the intense scenes.) My personal favorite is North by Northwest, the meter and harmonies on the main theme always surprise and delight.

If you are looking for soundtracks that employ previously recorded music from a variety of sources - hmm. I second Walrus's suggestion of Barry Lyndon - that's always been a favorite of mine. One that I only heard once that I keep meaning to go back to was "Men with Guns" - a John Sayles movie that I only saw once - though a fan of his films I didn't love this one - however I was BLOWN AWAY by the thrilling soundtrack.

A while back, there was a flick titled "The Long Riders." It was a tale about the James-Younger gang in the 1880's. The film was unique in that it cast brothers to play the parts of the brothers (James and Stacy Keach as the James brothers; David, Robert and Keith Carradine as the Younger brothers; Dennis and Randy Quaid as the Miller brothers; and the Guest brothers were then Fords).

The soundtrack was composed, scored and performed by Ry Cooder and had a distinct mournful, sort of period feel that was enhanced by his choice of instrumentation.

The tape would be a worthwhile investment or at least a good rental from your local Blockbuster.

perhaps the best ever was the soundtrack to 'The Third Man'. I don't know if a full soundtrack recording was ever released but the 'Third Man Theme' by Anton Karas had a pretty long shelf life and is still recognized by whoever has seen the film. That last seen with the leaves falling from the linden trees at the cemetery, just music playing as we watch Valli slowly walk away from Joseph Cotten, unforgettable.

personally, I find most Hollywood soundtracks useless and offensive, don't need or care for the bombast of john Williams and his ilk to tellme what I should be experiencing, didn't like Lord of the Rings for that reason, really enjoy OLD movies, that had NO music soundtrack, except for occasional incidental music related to the characters action on the screen. One good soundtrack that is just general background music that doesn't intrude but enhances the story is 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'
