Subject: The Hase session dies
From: smallpiper
Date: 16 Sep 02 - 07:18 PM

It is with deep regret that I have to anounce the death of the Hase session. This is due to the landlord and landlady being dissatisfied with the level of bar proffits over the summer months. The hase session is dead.

So go to the Sloop in Barton tonight (17th September) instead. Lets increase their bar proffits.

Do they really expect to make more money without the session? And exactly what did it cost them?

Let us hope their profits diminish for want of music.

I could really vent my spleen about this but descresion is the better part of valour! Just to say that we have annother "Nellies" here. Any phone calls asking about when the session is at the Hase will hopefully emphasise the point that about 15 to 20 people who regularly turned up on a Tuesday night will not now be going. Try replacing those on a dismal evening in January! I suspect Tuesday nights will become very popular as "get up and sing along to backing tracks" nights! (Cant spell Cary Okee) Keep Music Live!

I think it is good manners in a forum such as the Mudcat to give some indication of the part of the world threads like this and Nellies refer to. Preferably in the thread heading.

This would seem to indicate that there is someone in East Yorks who really DOESN'T like live music.....

Maybe we should all give up our proper jobs and run pubs instead.... I always wanted to be a seaside landlady, but I don't smoke enough and I've not worn a nylon overall since dressing up at the age of 5.

I can do the thing with the headscarf and curlers though.

Would consider a move to Yorkshire if I could guarantee getting southern beer shipped up... but of course, if I had my own pub, I'd have it as guest beer every day!

We could call it the Uppin Arms, crest being two pikestaffs through bodhrains, with shredded melodeon bellows. Supporters would be a set of small pipes, rampant and a cat fish.

It's always sad to hear of the demise of sessions, let's hope the new venue is cheerier.

It was one of those dratted clothed sessions with pipes and sometimes and jOhn in Hull, who often delayed his arrival whilst he ate pizza in the back of Harpmaker's van. A lot of Scottish tunes, some Irish. It was really good when kicking, in a secluded central part of the pub.

It was tolerated by the management, but is a town-centre pub, with plenty of competition. Despite my best efforts at providing healthy beer sales, I suppose that they really want to sell high-margin alcopops to crowd of young people. And good luck to them.

A great pity really, but the Sloop is different. I was discussing this with Gary earlier - without the session, the place would be deserted. The key point is that the landlord really enjoys the session, and values it, providing food and accepting the damage to the furniture and wallpaper. We have almost cured the melodeonist - pelt by the way.

What is it with Pub management at the minute???? I am sorry to hear of the demise of the Hase. I have only been a couple of times, and it has been a lovely evening. Profits? In my experience, us folkie-types sup a goodly portion of ale, and bring trade in. Another one bites the dust. I must make a point of coming to the sloop.

For anyone needing directions to the Sloop, it is on the far side, or Waterside, to be precise, of Barton Upon Humber. You would do even better to purchase the abitiously priced Cara CD 'The Sloop's Beyond the City' for precise directions.

I think Teresa at the Tap 'n' Spile in Hull might be up for another session night, if you ask her nicely.

I'm delaying my visit to the Sloop until they start treating us melodeonists with the respect we deserve.

Unfortunately, jOhn didn't get the messages and turned up with his friend - Mandolin Malcolm at the Hase. He was told that musicians were not welcome and to leave forthwith - not even allowed to stay for a drink of bear9. I am glad they made it to the Sloop in Barton for the naked session and seemed to enjoy it. £139 went to Kingston in some sort of settlement (brokered by Kofi Annan). That should see his return to the Mudcat. jOhn and Mandolin Malcolm's treatment at the Hase was not good, people.

I recieved a text whilst having a loverley naked time at the sloop, telling me that at 9.15 the total clientell in the Hase was 4!! There were 21 musicians and singers at the sloop (imcluding jOhn form Hull and Mandlin malcolm) plus 15 additional customers (most of whom had come for the music). I think that the landlady at the Hase may realise she has well and truely shot herslef in the foot. But we will not be returning the T&S sounds like a cool alternatative.

My protest against pub managers has now taken shape. I will visit the hase and Nellies on occasion, but I will leave one sprout on the window ledge in the gents toilet every time I visit. If you see a sprout when you are having a piss, gentlemen, this is the colour of Oakley's disapproval. Futile I know, but sort of classy and very disturbing to all the Penelopes out there. If anyone else feels moved to give earstwhile session venues the order of the sprout, perhaps you could announce it here. The Hase will get its first sprout on Friday. Nelly's will become similarly adorned on the 6th October. It might work in ladies toilets as well.

Ossonflags, might I suggest that your last post (and chorus) was a tad vulgar?

The Hase is now routinely frisking customers for concealed melodeons and musical instruments. Anyone attempting to take an instrument into the pub is skinned round the back. They have a sinister room with a sink and a collender in it to detect secreted whistles and shakey eggs and if you are Ossonflags, grand pianos.

Well it wasn't me who announced to the world that jOhn's9 wheely - bin found its way into Oss's back passage.

hEllo , Les is exactly right about The Tip & Spale in Hull, there is already a music session there on a Tuesdat and, Teresea 9the landlady) is a folkie and she likes music and she plays gitar and one of them irish drums. I told this to smallpiper last night and he said if he cant find a godd place in Hezzle , he will go there and join the sessions up.
Les- next time I go to the sloup, I will give you a loft. On Sunday I saw Gordon the Bass, he told me to go to The Hase, I did but nobody was there. I saw him in whitby as well , and he told to go to The pavillion on the thursday night, I ask him how much to get in, he said "dont worry, i will let yoo in for free" I went there, but he said it not free yoo have to pay money 9it was 8 quid), so i think what he says should be taken with a pinch of snuff.john

Cheers John. I would be delighted to accompany you (I'm a trained accompanist).

I have to be careful about the Sloop 'cos Oakleaf has got them all worked up about melodeonists. I'm looking for a naked bassoon, maybe I can get a few tunes off on that. But perhaps I can sneak in as a bouzoukiist (you don't get many words with a double ii in do you? Well maybe you get more than the rest of us, John!). And perhaps we can put some business Teresa's way. At least there's a landlady who actually likes folkies.

I saw Bill Sables at Monk Fryston last evening, and I think he was present at the Hase during the 'showdown'. He was telling me that the landlady had laid on a load of grub for the week before, but noone told her it was postponed. From that account, it sounds as though it was a fit of peek. Perhaps an approach to hear her grievances......

Les, there are thousands of words with double-i in them. Tiip and Spale for example. jOhn, did Mandolin Malcolm's daughter get her telegram from Buck House? Oh, and be careful about bassoons, particularly after all that kerfuffle with the Iraqi super-basson affair. Remember that Walter Somers had to diversify into the manufacture of flesh-coloured vibrating contrivences and underwear-with-bits-missing to survive.

We've heard her grievances - they are 1) profits are down on a tuesday night (over the summer when everyone is away) 2) one person has complained that they don't like the music and 3) strangers came into the pub and asked if the session was on when they were told it wasn't they stayed for a drink then left - (I rather think that was jOhn and malcolm, strangers who have never been to the pub don't know the session is on do they!)evidence in her mind that people stay if the session isn't on and don't if it is! As for the night that they made all the food - they had been told that we were out of sinc with the beverley session and were planning to rectify that she'd forgotten that one becaus ewe didn't remind her the day before. Then you have to ask why did she make all that food if she wasn't expecting a lot ofpeople to turn up - which she said she wasn't as a result of a continuous downturn in attendance over the summer. Crap the lot of it!

Smallpiper-this is what happened=At about 8.55PM on Tuesday, myself and Mandolin Malcolm walked into The Hase, as we were approaching the bar a middle aged lady sat next to the bar said "She has told them not to come here anymore" obviously "she" being the landlady, I was suprised to hear this as I thought she welcomed the session on her premises , providing a seperate area, supplying food etc, so I asked why, she said and I quote "Well the last time they came, it was a bloody dirge, and it was driving people away" I then asked the landlady what was going on. She told me that last week, nobody informed her that the session had changed dates, so she made some food as usual, and it got wasted, I did not realise, but at that point Bill Sables was stood behind us, and heard our discussion with the landlady, I then asked the landlady, if she knew where the session had moved to if at all, she answered in an abrubt manner, something along the lines of "how the hell should I know?", At this point Bill Sables reminded us that there is a good session at The Sloop, and suggested that we go there, this we did and had an exellent time, we felt very welcome and were invited by both Dave9Oakely) and Greg9Skipjack8) if we would like to sing/play a tune, I refused as I am a crap singer and only a beginner on my mandolin, but Mandolin Malcom said he will sing something next time he goes.

A few things that puzzle me Re The Hase =
1."The last time they came it was a bloody dirge", I was at the last Hase session, it was the time I lent my guitar to Pete Deen, it was a lively session and certainly no dirge.
2."The music is driving people away" Not True! As I was off-line the las few weeks, I did not know the session was postponed, so I have been to The Hase for the last 3 weeks ,I noticed that if anything, the pub is busier when the session is on, the strangers referred to above were NOT Mandolin Malcom and myself, we went into the pub realised there was no session and went straight to Barton that night.
4."food for the musicians was wasted"! The sessions start at 9PM and had recently been starting at 8.30 PM, and the food is served at 10.PM, if she saw no musicians then why did she prepare food? It does not take over an hour to make a few sandwiches! And if the food was already prepared for whatever reason, why did she not give it to the other pub regulars, if there were any?
I could have raised any of these points with the landlady at the time, but I felt little point, if I feel unwelcome somewhere, I would prefer to go somewhere else anyway, there is little point arguing, there are plenty of good pubs about.john
PS. I was only joking about Gordon, I have seen him since, and he tried to contact me Re The Hase, but did not have my number, and he would have let me in for free at Whitby, but the boss was there, he bought me a pint anyway!

The food wasn't wasted it was distributed to the customers in the pub atthe time - but you are absolutely right about the time. Sorry I thought the strangers might have been you and Malcolm. Anyway bolloxs to the Hase its their loss.

By the way, John of Hull, with reference to the "get in free" incident, as this is a public forum I would just like to point out to any festival organisers and future employers of stewards at such events that If I hadnt spent all my money that night on bear I would have let John in for free and ensured that I replaced his entry fee in the kitty out of my own pocket, honest! Thread Creep With regards to people getting in for free at festivals I support folk music in all it's shapes, I also pay at festivals and folk clubs, and make no mistake if I found that stewards where letting chums in for free, I would without any hesitation report that steward, as far as I am concerned BEWARE Keith

We didn't say anyone WAS let in for free, we're just saying that 1) it is not a good habit to get into, it will only foster bad feeling amongst other people who worked hard to pay for their tickets and 2) as certain people have hopefully realised now, making statements on a very public forum such as this can get a body into deep DEEP shit. Regardless of what was allegedly said, if it differs from what was posted here, then it's just asking for trouble.
