1. I can't tie my shoelaces or neckties correctly. But, I get along somehow. Also I can't play cards. I don't mean play *well*; I mean play AT ALL. Mental block. / That's Two (Two! two) Truths in One!, ain't it? 1(c): I sometimes cheat.
2. I had lunch with Robert Penn Warren and watched a baby pull his nose. ("Man had a rather prominent proboscis..." - WC Fields)
3. I love WC Fields. Also WB Yeats. Also WF Buckley Jr., though I don't agree with him any more. Also Groucho Marx, Tom Lehrer, Tom Smothers, Stephen King, Allan Sherman, that old reprobate Liam Clancy, his young niece Aiofe Clancy (oy!), Bob Dylan, Bob Dole (though I don't agree with *him* any more either), and my Sixfoot Wife and darling Pookason. Not in that order of course.
4. I withdrew from Georgetown University. Three times.
5. I sometimes write strangely. Maybe that one's not so Obscure.
6. My feet stink. That one's fairly obscure, except to my Sixfoot Wife.
7. Did I mention I have a Sixfoot Wife?
8. I'm happy to learn some other 'Catters are self-absorbed too. :)
9. I was once in the Peanut Gallery on Howdy Doody.
10. I wrote Connecticut's Presidential Primary Law, and rewrote our absentee-voting laws. (It was while I was in the Peanut Gallery...nowait, that part goes on the other thread. Sorry.)

Hmm. Mine are gonna suck...

1. My first pet was a goat.
2. I've never lived in one place for more than four years.
3. Despite any rumours you may have heard, I did not "kill a teacher in middle school."
4. I don't drink, do drugs, smoke, etc. The one time I ever consumed enough alcohol to affect me was at a Richard Leakey book-signing thing. I was nervous to meet him, my childhood idol, and they had free wine.
5. I personally printed 99% of the shirts for the 1996 and 2002 Paul Wellstone campaigns. And, no, I'm not one of the vultures selling them on Ebay.
6. Much to my chagrin, I recently called a kid riding his bike on my lawn "you goddamned punk." OK, I'm going to mosey on down to the senior center, now. It's pudding night.
7. I'm named after the late R&B singer Little Willie John. My father's first choice was "Otto," but my mom wouldn't go for that. Knowing that she wouldn't like his second choice, either, he lied, and told her that "Willie John" was a guy who'd saved his life in the Army. She went for that. Personally, I would've preferred "Otto."
8. I really, really like Korean food. Dead Korean food, not that live octopus type shit.
9. As a child, I faked eye problems, just so I could get some glasses.
10. I'll never go out with a woman who shares her name with one of my close relatives. Just too creepy.

1.Up to age 13 a car ride was still a novelty to me. I was Amish.
2.I remember the trip to Oregon from North Dakota when I was 8 months old. Don't remember much- but I remember there were a LOT of legs in the back seat (7 older kids in the car), how dark it was in the car and how tired I got from being lifted back and forth over the front seat. I also remember that one night we 'camped' alongside the car. ( In ND we had a car, weren't orthodox.)
3.I won the scholar's award in 7th grade: 15 silver dollars. Spent it on 11 books. (1949)
4.Went from 7th grade to college courses many years later. Not because I was so brilliant but that my family kept me out of school. (Let me tell you about the Amish!)
5.In my late teens I once necked for hours on an interstate bus with a really cute AWOL sailor on his return trip back to base.
6.I've never had a joint. No particular virtue involved; I certainly drank enough. If I were offered one now, I'd probably take it.
7.I smoked cigarettes heavily, compulsively, for 25 years. I stopped.
8.I'm a living testimonial that one can go from 'not needing anybody' to REALLY respecting, admiring and loving people.
9.I will drop anything for a chance to make music.
10.I would love to be able to play guitar like Red Smiley.

Ebbie (In my late teens I once necked for hours on an interstate bus with a really cute AWOL sailor on his return trip back to base. )

Well, Ebbie,

1,  At age 16, on my way to college in Texas (a Southern Baptist U., in fact), I slept with four servicemen at one time -- right in front of everyone else in that train car!

Other totally unimportant aspects of my bio:

2.  My cat once received an "Experienced Driver Certificate" from Colonial Penn Insurance.

3.  I once had a car on which the doors would fly open and the (forward opening) hood would fly upwhen I drove over 30 MPH.

4.  My brother once dated Mitch Miller's daughter, I "went to school" with Steve Goodman and Dick Butkus (though I didn't know either of them), and Ralph Waite (of The Waltons) once had to get up in the middle of the night to let me in to the student house where I was staying, since I'd lost my key.

5.  As a toddler, I'm told, I was utterly fearless, especially around farm animals, -- much to the chagrin of my parents -- and I have always loved snakes, lizards, turtles, and, especially, frogs!  (Skin tests say I'm allergic to cats, but I sleep with 'em, anyway.)

6.  I once gave the behaviorist B. F. Skinner "the finger" repeatedly while arguing with him during a colloquium discussion (without realizing I was doing it).

7.  When I lived in an apartment in the late 70s, I discovered that the two very tall weeds growing behind my house were..., well,... "weed."

8.  My first paid gig as a guitarist/folksinger was for the "Clay County Coon Hunters Association" (Missouri), and I was paid $10.

9.  Though I have formal training in Latin, French, and German, I can cuss up a storm in Italian!  (I learned to drive a motor scooter in, of all places, Rome!)

10.  I have experienced  a ca. 5.2 and a ca. 6.9 earthquake in Seattle, both in the same room on the 5th floor of a condo.

Oh, and I almost forgot:
In the second (bigger) earthquake, the 'bust' of Ronald Reagan (actually a Halloween mask on a wig stand), which was wearing a WWII Nazi helmet, fell off the top of a bookshelf and almost hit my host in the head.

1. I used to work as a forensic scientist and have appeared in court as an expert witness in firearms and drugs cases, and have also analysed the stomach contents of a frozen mammoth and discovered Cannabis sativa on board an excavated Punic warship.
2. I used to own a music store specialising in and repairing/restoring old acoustic instruments
3. In the late 70s/early 80s I was the artist's model for an billboard advertisement for PG Tips Tea (the real chimps had been dropped for a while!)
4. I was also the artist's model for illustrations of Roberto (the Latin lover) in a "Woman's Own" series in the late 1970s (and Lady McMoo was the model for the jilted heroine!)
5. Jo-Ann Kelly once offered to sell me her 12-string Zemaitis guitar.
6. I have taught Tibetan Buddhist monks biology in a remote monastery in Southern India
7. Peter Green (of Fleetwood Mac and Splinter Group fame) was a regular listener in a trad session I used to run in London.
8. I have ridden motorcycles since I was 15 (i.e. 35 years) and dislike cars. I never had an accident (...running to touch wood!)
9. I once stood as a Green candidate in a County Council election in Surrey (UK) and, much to my surprise and pleasure, came second with 25% of the vote giving the resident Tory a nasty turn!
10. I survived a 2-storey fall from a window as a 12 month old baby...landing in a large heap of leaves!

... and I used to think I was odd ...

Still, here's my personal arcana

1. My father is a Geordie, my mother is Welsh.
2. I would have been christened "Gareth", but my mother saw a screen version of "How green was my valley", just before going into the maternity ward.
3. Just to add to the confusion of my early years, I was brought up in the Vale of York.
4. I worked briefly down a gold mine in South Africa. (It seems to put women off if I tell them I was a gold-digger).
5. I served briefly as an officer in the Territorial Army.
6. I played rugby for many years, certainly enough to break several bones (including some of mine !) and destroy a good many brain cells.
7. I have a titanium plate behind and underneath one eye - the injury which finally forced me to stop playing rugby was quite an extensive one.
8. I was once tentatively suggested as an agent for the Official Monster Raving Loony candidate for the Ashton-under-Lyne constituency (not by the candidate himself, who eventually resigned his candidature on the grounds that he had recovered his sanity).
9. I have been engaged once, but it didn't work out; I am still eligible (on paper).
10. I suffered gout earlier this year, and now drink on weekends only. The pub nearly went out of business.

I forgot to mention, I prefer Fredericks of Hollywood to Victoria's Secret because the prices are better, the quality is better, and they use Real Women for models.

Pushkin, I make bath salts too. They make wonderful gifts.

I've never tried peanut butter and bacon, but I could see how it might work. It sounds like something my daddy would have tried...

My goodness....the threads that happen when I go outta town.

It's hard to believe that there may be ANYTHING about myself that's a secret anymore....because:

#1. I HAVE used Mudcat as some kind of therapeutic journal during some difficult times over the last four years. I've kept ninety percent of it musical or music-related 'cuz after all it's a music forum.

#2. I really DO believe strongly in many of the things that Quentin Crisp advocated, including being as completely open as possible, even with strangers. It's the best method of dealing with shyness that I've ever seen.

#3. My constant jokes about being thrown out of high school (and Art College) are totally true, but those experiences were humiliating at the time, and I'm sure are responsible for certain current personality quirks. Same thing with being fired from five or six 'straight' jobs before becoming a full time musician.

#4.During the seventies to the mid eighties I often earned as much as forty grand or more per anum as a 'commercial' folk musician. I rarely had a penny left at the end of the year. Since then I rarely earn MORE than twenty grand as a teacher and part time 'non commercial' folk musician. Somehow (thanks to Heather), we actually manage to SAVE a bit each year!

#5. Since getting out of Bars and 'commercial gigs', I've not bought even ONE package of TUMS, and have never ONCE had my prescription for back-pain medication re-filled.

#6. I'm not as constantly pleasant, non-judgemental, and 'laissez-faire' in real life as I am on Mudcat. When I'm in an environment that I don't like, I can be as sarcastic and remote as your average curmudgeon. I have the ability to virtually "go to sleep", while keeping my eyes open and keeping a bit of a smile on my face, if I'm around people who are boring me.

#7. Usually when I get bored it's because people are talking about stuff that I know nuthin' about, and it reminds me of what a hash I made of my schooling!

#8. I'm rarely critical about weak musicians who are trying as hard as they can. Weak musicians with attitude and poor social skills drive me NUTS! (I usually have something to say in EVERY thread on jam and song-circle etiquette)

#9. I sometimes feel like a total alien on planet earth. The CLOSEST I get to feeling like 'I belong' is around folkies.

#10. I swear a lot in real life, when something's REALLY GOOD!. I Use both my favourite swear words "Shit" and "Fuck" in all their possible combinations! It embarrases the hell outta me, but sometimes I can't help myself. I NEVER swear when I'm angry. Go figger.

#11. (I know, I know!) It's a bit hard to admit that Mudcat has had such a profound affect on my life, but it has. What started as a simple hobby (and an alternative to TV watching) has become an integral part of my everyday life. It has really helped me UNDERSTAND other folks so much better. And I'll bet I'm not alone in that area.

Cheers (that was fun)

Rick

1) I have double jointed knees and thumbs.

2) I am obsessive about people closing the loops of their letters in their handwriting.

3) I've got two blokes on the go but steadfastly maintain that I am not in a relationship. Both are tall, Dutch, computer scientists. Each one knows about the other, but it all works out nicely as one lives in the US and one in the UK.

4) Oliver Reed once kissed my hand at the breakfast table.

5) I was never baptised, christened or affiliated to any church, but despite being an atheist I did 14 compulsory years of religious education in school and am quite good at Bible quizzes.

6) I am known by my middle name. For all those who ask me why - well, I never had a say in it, my parents used it from my birth.

7) I can't sit with my back to a door, or to a room full of people - I have to be wedged into a corner with a good vantagepoint.

8) The only superstition I adhere to is "don't put new shoes on the table". I don't believe in superstitions, I just do this one automatically.

9) My main aim in life is to have about 5 children, a dog and an orchard. I'll settle for two or three children and a bowl of apples, but I'd really like that dog.

10)I can make tetrahedrons out of folded sweet and crisp packets.

Lots of my obscurities have been mentioned in other threads or told to various 'Catters at one time or another. I'll try to consolidate some of them here:

1. I have had an incredibly wide variety of jobs and so many that I have totally lost track. I don't claim to have "done it all"; but I may be approaching it! Currently, I am a night auditor at a Best Western Hotel.

2. Even at an early age (18 months,) I am told that I loved to "sing". Unfortunately, it came out more as a screech in those days and in doing so, I managed to wear three holes in my windpipe. A large bubble of leaked air filled the skin around my neck and began to choke me. The hospital told my parents that I was not expected to live through the night. I am happy to say that I somehow managed to surprise them all.

3. I enjoy working with wood - especially carving. I don't do much of it; but seem to do okay. Recently, I have also made some things in bone (deer and cow) as well as some experiments in brass.

4. It was through the encouragement of the folks here at the Mudcat that I have been able to overcome a deeply entrenched stage fright. I feel I have come a long, long way since I first signed on here in May of 1998. The stage fright still haunts me from time to time; but I am happy to say that it is no longer debilitating. Thank you! Thank you all.

5. I'm a landlord. I own a duplex that I have been remodeling almost constantly for the past four (or is it five?) years. I very much enjoy doing carpentry and plumbing as well as working with drywall. I hate the idea of painting; but take pride in it when I actually get to doing it. One of my next projects is to replace some kitchen cabinets.

6. I can't read music. By that I mean that I have never learned how to apply written notes to a musical instrument - fluently. I can sorta figure out which notes are which and can plunk them out with painful slowness on a keyboard; but cannot sight read very well either vocally or otherwise. I have resolved to take piano and voice lessons next year. It can only help!

7. I have an abiding interest in wildflowers and edible plants. Besides the usual field guides, I also have a small collection of guides to the medicinal uses of wild plants. I once created a field guide titled, "Edible Vascular Plants of the Back Bay Area". (It was self-published and so cannot be found at your local library or bookstore.)

8. As might be deduced from #7, I am very fond of the outdoors and am very much at home in the woods. I enjoy observing and tracking animals. I also enjoy canoeing - no thrill rides, please - just pleasant float trips where I might even have an opportunity to do some fishing. About four years ago I backpacked more than a hundred miles of the Appalachian Trail - from the southern end of Shenandoah National Park to the northern end.

9. I love mentoring people. I have sometimes been in a position to give a boost to some folks and always have been pleased for the opportunity. While I'll have to admit that doing so has sometimes been like pouring sand down a rat hole; there have been many other times that have proved extremely worthwhile. It is a lovely thing to watch someone grow and to feel that something I did may have been helpful toward that end.

10. I am omnivorous. I love to eat all sorts of foods. Eating something new or exotic is to me both a treat and an adventure. Tied in with this is the fact that I love to cook and to bake. With a bit of notice and a little planning I can put together a very nice meal at times.

Gee, can I squeeze one more in here, please?

11. I am a fan of all of the following (in no particular order): Perry Como, Uriah Heep, Lou Rawls, The Seldom Scene, Ricky Nelson, Los Indios Trabajaros, George Winston, Starland Vocal Band, Buddy Guy, CSN(&Y), Brahms, Jo Stafford, Lenny Welch, Wes Montgomery, Glenn Miller, The Kingston Trio, The Spencer David Group, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Michael Martin Murphy and of just about any Do-Wop group you might ever think of. Oh, and if you have bothered to read this far, I am probably also a fan of yours.

This is all very interesting.

It is also rather cathartic. I think I'll share a few more.

11. My mom tells people she named me after characters in Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (Amy Jo) but truthfully she was under a lot of medication afterwards and I don't think she remembers why she named me that.

12. I cannot stand tea in any form (nor can my grandmother).

13. I have diagnosed myself with social anxiety (I hesitate to use the word disorder) and started this thread as a form of self therapy.

Thanks for sharing everyone!

I agree- this thread is fun. How often does one get to bring in these kinds of subjects!

"I really DO believe strongly in many of the things that Quentin Crisp advocated, including being as completely open as possible, even with strangers. " Rick, I agree- as I keep saying: What are we afraid of? On the other hand, I'm still working on 'solo performer anxiety'. I know they won't hurt me, that they will be supportive and responsive, that even if they are not, it won't kill me, but - well, I'm still working on it.

I'm a newcomer, so by definition an obscurista. Offer 10 odds & ends as introduction.

1. My first ancestor in N. American (New France) arrived in 1643. Probably not voluntarily.

2.   Based on genealogical research, I have just an incredible amount of inbreeding in my family history. It's a wonder I can drool.

3. Graduated in the fifth quintile of my high school class. See 2.

4. Worked 10 blue-collar years before going to college - truck driver,
construction laborer, short-order cook, roofer, gas attendant (remember those?), drill press operator, carpenter,..

5.   Played keyboards for a while in top-40, disco and reggae bands. Recovered.

6.   BS in Latin American Political Economy; MS in Urban & Regional Planning

7.   Stabbed by "entrepreneur" in Quito, Ecuador; lost spleen, some lung damage, massive internal bleeding, stayed alive until surgery by choosing to live

8. While I eating peanut butter and banana sandwich on a factory lunch break in rural North Carolina, co-worker Bobby Joe said "What you got there, Meerit?" I described. He responded that "Why, I'd just as soon eat cat shit. What you need to get you is a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich. Now that's eatin'." He was right, of course. Geography of culture. Matters of taste cannot be disputed.

9.   Found my singing voice at the age of 48.

10. Believe that alternatives to corporate globalization are not only
necessary, but possible.

1. I was the first baby born in San Angelo Texas in 1955, and my brother was the second.

2. I made a 14 foot canvas and wood Kayak from plans in a book I ordered from England, when I was a Junior in High School and then only used it about 5 times. The coolest part was the shaped plexiglass seat that required sitting on the plexiglass while it was hot!

3. As a business venture my Dad imported a chinese junk that we sailed in on Lake Travis when I was 7. It ultimately was used as a bar by LBJ on his lake.

4. My mom's maiden name is Findlater and we are part of the Oglivie Clan. Our ancestors include the Earle of Findlater and there is a Findlater Castle in Scotland (2 miles east of Cullen in Banff). The Castle fell into ruins after it was abandoned in 1600. The story goes that in about 1560, the Ogilvie Laird argued with his son, disinherited him, and signed the properly over to Sir John Gordon, third son of the Earl of Huntly. In 1562, the Gordons rebelled against Mary. refusing her entry to the castle, and when they were defeated at the Battle of Corrochie, the Earl was beheaded and the castle was abandoned was in ruins by 1638. So I may have a real beheaded ghost in the family!

5. I can crack a bull whip really loud! As we found out one summer while trying to load young bulls in a cattle trailer: If you stand your ground bulls will still chase you! Bulls get the runs when they are scared. A cattle prod doesn't hurt but it shocks the bejezzus out of you! And that's no bull.

6. I'm married to a twin named Linn.

7. I got my first non-musical musical instrument in my Xmas stocking when I was 11. It took us forever to figure out how to play that jaw harp. Since then, I have become a master of non musical instruments, and am forever trying to learn real ones.

8. My brother and I took 2nd in the state (Michigan) in Forensics Multiple Reading in High School in "The Secret Life of Walter Middy" (I was the mild Walter). Since then I am a closet Story Teller.

9. I have broken more bones than anyone I know, and average a major break about every 5 years. Last time I drove myself to the hospital, and they wouldn't believe that I had a compound fracture of my foot...until they took the xrays.

10. I spent a summer in 1974 living on the corner of Haight and Cole one block up from Haight-Ashbury while working as a construction worker building Embarkadero #3. While there we (my brother and I) took a improvisation class and did street improv in the park.

and

11. I wear a pocket protector at work.
