I've just sliced the top off my right index finger ( the little pad at the top behind the nail, not a whole joint or anything). Is it going to heal flat, do you think, or will it regenerate? I'm assuming there is no point in medical attention, it appears to have stopped bleeding and you can't stitch what isn't there anymore, can you?

It's probably worth going to your local A+E or local minor injuries unit, to get it cleaned up properly, a few years ago I sliced the end of my left index finger off, decided to treat it myself, and not bother the hospital.I made the wrong decision! It got infected and turned black, I had to go to doctors in the end anyway to get it sorted out, and had to take a course of strong anti-biotics.

Flat, if my thumb is any indication. I didn't seek medical attention, either, but was visiting the Veteran's unit at the hospital later that day and one of the nurses asked me about the bandage. When I told her about the way I cut it, which sounds similar to your wound, she asked to have a look. She gave me s***, cleaned it, pressure bandaged it, and got a doctor to take care of it. She burned it some kind of gauze type stuff which also acts like skin, bandaged it and gave me a tetnis (sp) shot. I was taken aback with all the fuss, but it didn't turn black like John's.

A few years ago, I got cellulitis from a small wound... twice. Apparently, infections are much worse than they used to be when I was a lad. So, if it's anything you can't deal with using alcohol and bandages, go see a med.

No, gnu didn't mean that sort of traetment with alcohol, Mortee! (did you?)

I sliced the top of my thumb off, years ago, in a similar way (from the sound of it), washed it & put a plaster on, but it hurt- so i found the sliced off piece of flesh (!) and popped it back in place then plastered it on: it stopped hurting so much and healed back fine. I can still see where it happened because the 'whorls' and lines of my thumbprint are discontinuous in that area- I obviously put it back on the wrong way round!

Probably too late for that in this case... hope it's ok, dearie..

No. I meant clean it with a solution of minimum 80% alcohol (such as isopropyl alcohol) and bandage it. Of course, this is only for minor cuts. Those which are deep, are caused by a (possibly) contaminated tool or object, are subsequently contaminated, or cannot be closed, should be taken care of by a med. If you haven't had a tetnis (sp ?) shot in the past five years, one should be had. DON'T LEAVE medical care for at least fifteen minutes after the shot. I think it was fifteen ??

In my case, the slice was relatively deep in the flesh, such that bleeding resumed as soon as pressure was released, even some eight hours after the wounding, with a drywall knife, on the last cut of a two week basement renovation. Haste makes waste... and hurts like heck.

(it's tetanus that you have to be wary of- and they say every 10 years here)

Thanks for the spelling. Not only am I too lazy to look up proper spelling, it would appear that the med's don't trust my memory past five years.

okay, I took the advice here and went and had it 'seen' to. It's now in a very nice little finger-cosy,and yes I was advised I would have had problems if I had left it, so thank you, everyone. It hurts like hell and being my right hand, I can't avoid using it but I 'spect it will be fine. Have to go back on Monday to have it checked but they have told me it will leave quite a 'dip' when it heals....looks like I won't be practising for a while |:)

Glad you went in, Mortee. Sorry it hurts so much. Silly dear that you are! Just what were you doing?!**bg**

Did they tell you it wouldn't hurt as much if you keep it elevated slightly? Also, anything about soaking it in salt water?

BTW, for the record, it won't sting as much and is just as cleansing and better to use hydrogen peroxide to clean out a wound like that, than to use isopropyl alcohol and you get to see all of those nifty little bubbles at work.

It's bad news I'm afraid Mort',from personal experience I don't think Medics know about Mudcat.

Last year I accidently(what else?) got the skinny bit of my willie trapped in my zipper. In great,no GREAT pain I logged on to Mudcat.99 people called in to make jokes about my situation. However Mr Cohen from Golders Green came to the rescue.

Got to go now we are off to the synagogue.

I think it was GREAT,GREAT pain

I'm twinging at the thought. Have a nurse or doctor check it out- having had a finger infected although I thought I had treated it properly, I tend to be extra careful.

Noreen, you remind me of when I once slashed open a cheekbone with barbed wire that jutted from a tree. At the time, I was clearing my land of thorntrees and five refuse piles so I was getting regular shots to guard against tetanus. (I wasn't given tetanus serum when I was a child, and evidently once you are grown the likelihood of an adverse reaction is increased, so they give you some kind of shot every six months, and you're supposed to get an extra one with every injury.)

Well, I'd had the extra shot just recently so I cleaned the flap of fleshy skin and the flesh beneath with hydrogen peroxide then with a butterfly bandaid I pulled it into place and fastened it down. Two days later I repeated the treatment, and lucky me, it healed with no problem at all. Scarcely a scar.

very few men can claim to have NEVER had a run-in with a wayward zipper...usually not serious, and usually only ONCE, as the lesson is quite clear. Mine was over 40 years ago....

Morty...I'm glad you saw to some care on the finger. It only takes one serious infection to make the point....

I once hurted my head when I bumped it.........I was seven at the time and got a "David was brave at the hospital" certificate. I framed it along with my "25 yards breast stroke" and "MS Windows for beginners" certificates.

They are the only three qualifications I have ever earned.

Hope all is well with your pointing digit and don't pick yer nose until the bandage is off.

When I was 17 I worked in a local butcher's slicing cooked meats as a Saturday job. One day when the pressure for quarter pounds of corned beef got very high, I was working (naughty me) without the metal plate on top of the meat - it had been proved that with the right amount of pressure (not possible with the plate on) you could get 4 slices to the quarter on #4 setting.

Well nobody complained about the little extra they got, and the side of my right thumb to the left of my nail eventually healed without trace, thank goodness. Cost me the job though, when my dad insisted I get it in the accident book.

I once sanded off part of the nail of my right index finger on a band sander at college too. Show me a stanley knife and I was bleeding everywhere, but using a scalpel for finer work I was fine. (Unlike the guy in our group who dropped on in his thigh and had to go to casualty. The doctor was quite amused at what he'd done).

I cut my thumb to the bone cutting Chocolate mint cookie out of a tin, so I too, have a thumbprint with an interesting break in the lines and a neat white scar to show off.... using a really sharp knife is usually a lot less dangerous than using the only a little bit sharp knife like I was... Had it been a sharp knife the pressure wouldn't have been so great and I wouldn't have cut my thumb.

Jimlad - maybe the wearing of undergarments with a secure region would have prevented the injury?

I can be caring and thoughtful, but a week or so ago I was standing in a puddle of blood holding together some total strangers' wrist where the silly sod had applied a breadknife to it, so I'm afraid admiting to catching the flappy bits of your dick in a common fastening isn't going to arrest my sympathies for a while.

Had I been there at the time things might have been different, after all, I can apply pressure and elevate the affected part like a pro now!

I take it all back about you being an uncaring type.

With respect to yuo now being able to 'elevate parts like a pro' can I call you if a 'position' becomes vacant.

when you two have quite finished your lacivious conversation *BG*, you might like to know that it's healing nicely despite the fact that I seem to catch it on everything. It doesn't look nearly so disgusting and in a couple more days I will be allowed to get it wet....I had no idea how difficult it is to wash your hair, or the sole of your right foot, one-handed.
