Our 4.9 million dedicated employees are currently toiling away in order to provide you with competitively-priced items proudly marked 'Made in America'. We can keep costs down by paying our employees what we consider to be a generous wage...thirty cents per hour. They accept this wage because it's either that or shoot rubberbands at rats in their cells all day long. The keen interest in prison jobs has prompted an encouraging building spree, and four new 5,000 bed 'factories' are being built in America each week. And liberal new employment guidelines are being passed by congress which should allow us to offer even MORE Americans that desired for 'job security' in the very near future. So browse through our store and see if anything strikes your fancy. Made in America BY Americans.

I think it's a darn good way to pass the time you're doing if you're doing time. It may be blatant exploitation of criminals, but there's an easy way to avoid it -- don't go criminal.

It's called 'slave labor', Amos. And if you think it's a good thing, go apply for one of the jobs. They have applications in liquor stores, I hear. You get a quicker response if you waggle a gun at the guy behind the counter.

The Bush Cocaine Cartel created the cocaine problem in the US, then they declared a 'war on drugs' in order to populate their Wackenhut prisons.

Also called the prison/industrial complex. One on five adult black males make up that emloyee class. Good on you, America. Maybe you'll get it to one out of one, like in the "good old days"...

Victimless crime must go!

Those private prisons are beginning to go out of business, but it isn't for lack of prisoners. It's because they do such a horrible job. Texas has figured out the solution to prison overcrowding--executions are such a regular thing here they barely even make the news any more (unless they slow down for some reason and go for a week or two without one). Here is the Death Row homepage for Texas.

I don't see any problem with judicial slavery, provided that the judicial system actually works. If you commit a crime, it's both a more effective deterrent and better economic policy for you to work for your keep. If I'm wrongfully convicted, I'm not going to care that much whether I'm making license plates or counting ceiling tiles.

But it doesn't work. Many of the people are serving time because of plea bargains. Innocent people who just didn't have an alibi for the time in question and were told they'd get the needle if they didn't strike a deal. The Governor of Illinois just commuted all death sentences because so many of the guys who ended up there were coerced into making false confessions in hopes of getting leniency.

Meanwhile, that thirty cents an hour might have to be slashed if the profits aren't there. Or no, that's right...the plan is to just put troops in our factories when we hit 'code red'. We'll all be working under the gun. Literally. Goons in ski-masks with automatic weapons are going to protect us from the terrorists.

I resent that "goons in ski masks" remark. It's called a balaclava. Get it right!

it's true enough that drug addiction should not be punishable by jail time...nor should possession of drugs, in and of itself ("intent to distribute" is hard to prove). Habits are hard to break in prison and I hear tell getting access to narcotics is way easier in prison than it was on the streets...so rehabilitation in this sense is not an option once an addict is locked up...
don't even get me started on all those people locked up for marijuana possession...

It is idiocy to complain about false arrests and improper convictions and prison labor int he same whine. They are different issues. If you assume a prison population, after the fact of the judiciary process, then what? If someone is doing time for violent crime I would much rather he make license plates and ugly office furniture than spend his time forming up his next hit, smuggling drugs into his cell, or counting ceiling tiles.

Given that they don't have a remedial prgram that works worth a shit, at least helpign to meet the expenses of your own incarceration is neither cruel nor unreasonable.

I remember a Kurt Vonnegut novel where half of America was in prison and the other half worked as prison guards. All of it owned by the Japanese. We're going in that direction now...half guards, half workers.

The Bushes are about to create a prison-nation. They just create a permanent state of terror, then post guards at all the work places for 'national security'. Gradually eliminate wages and shoot anyone who doesn't have the slave mindset. And I'd be willing to bet that when that time comes...ski-masked guards standing over us as we work...most of America will still be saying 'May not be perfect, but it STILL beats any other form of government'.

You're just ahead of your time, Amos.

That wasn't a Kurt Vonnegut novel. That was me in another post. And it was you what give me the idea. Now I s'pose you'll want to share the royalties.

And what the hell are you gonna bet with anyway? Your shack in Montana? Your bomb-making materials?

Is your license plate made out of cardboard?

(From a google search, 'chinese prisoners transplants'):

WASHINGTON, Friday, May 5, 1995 (NY Times) -- Two Chinese refugees -- one a former political prisoner and one a former plice official -- testified in Senate hearings today that the Chinese Government removes organs from executed prisoners and sells them for use in medical transplants in state-owned hospitals.

The recipients of the organs, they said, are usually top Chinese officials or foreigners from Hong Kong, Japan, Bitain and the United States who need either kidney or cornea transplants and can afford to pay for the operations in foreign currency....

(From a google search, 'Georgia guillotine):

Georgia lawmaker Doug Teper (Democrat) has proposed a bill to replace the state's electric chair with the guillotine. Teper's reasoning? It would allow for death-row inmates as organ donors, he says, since the "Blade makes a clean cut and leaves vital organs intact."

(Here you go, Amos. This is what we're headed for. Did one of Bush's daughters just blow out her liver? Don't worry, just cut ol' Amos' head off and do the transplant. He didn't do anything? Well, let's criminalize everything with PATRIOT Act 2 and order some more of those guillotines. Let's do a brain transplant on lepercon while we're at it, too...up his IQ a bit. Where'd we put that chimp?)
