I know most here are way beyond intermediate, much less beginning guitarists. Still, I just came across a very nice version of The Denny classic "Who Knows Where The time Goes" and thought I'd share it.

I've played it fingerstyle for a very long time (since I first heard it on a Kate Wolf vinyl) but thought this simple strumming version as done by Eva Cassidy might be fun to share.

It's played with lots of open strings ringing -- gives it that sort of "alternate tuning" sound, though it's in standard. Hope you enjoy it.

Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Sandy Denny

022100 244200 466400 244200 022100
022100 Across the evening sky
244200All the birds are 466400 leaving 244200
But 022100 how can they know
244200 It's time for them to 466400 go? 244200
Before the winter fire 466400
244200 I will still be 466400 dreaming
577600 577700 I do not 577600 count the 022100 time
For 799800 who knows where the 577600 time goes?
022100 Who knows 244200 where the 566400 time 244200 022100goes?

Sad deserted shore
your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, then you know
It's time for them to go
But I will still be here
I have no thought of leaving
You know I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

And I am not alone
While my love is near me
I know it will be so
Until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter
And then the birds in spring again
I do not fear the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

Great song, but i'd guess something with chord names, like here would be easier than lists of fret numbers.

I'm sure that there are better examples out there, as my example is better for a beginner than John's....

Sorry, I misunderstood your message.

I do however wonder at your "I know most here are way beyond intermediate" How do you come to that conclusion? Have you judged everyone who reads here???

The chorus for the third verse should read:

For who knows how my love grows
And who knows where the time goes

Cheers,
Michael

Please ignore the Guest until they have the courtesy to register. I'd like to thank you for the finger positions. You can name the chords but if you play them in the usual positions it does't sound anything like it should. Mind you I'm not quite sure I agree totally on the fingering. I'll sober up and come back to you tomorrow when I've got my guitar with me. Thanks again.

yes.

I have judged everyone who posts here. In fact, I either know everyone who posts here, or I have played with everyone who posts here. In fact, I taught almost everyone who posts here how to play guitar and so I know that everyone who posts here is beyond beginner because I am such an excellent teacher. In fact, of those who I didn't teach, or those I haven't judged for their playing, they were vetted for me by the others whom I did teach. In fact, they told me that the ones that I didn't teach and those I haven't heard, I've now been told are even better than me, and I'm not a beginner, or I wouldn't have been able to disciple those that I did teach past that awkward "beginner" phase. In fact, I wrote the song that made the whole world sing. I wrote the songs of love and everything. I write the songs that made the young girls cry. I wrote all the songs...except for "feelings"...

...I think Amos wrote that one.

- Please ignore the Guest until they have the courtesy to register (presumably even when they are taking the trouble to provide you with the chords for waht is in my humble opinion one of the greatest songs of all time).

The version I have of this seems to match the recorded version, and is slightly different to the version above. As desired by one of you, I will give the chord names as well as an indication of fingering:

In chord symbols I have the intro as as E F#m11/E repeated (which are the first two chords given in the original posting).

(E) Across the evening sky (F#m11/E) All the birds are (Emaj7 - the third chord fingered in the original posting) leav - (F#m11/E) ing
(E)But how can they know
(F#m11/E)It's time for them to (Emaj7)go? (A - open chord)
(F#m - bar on II) Before the winter fire (G#m bar on IV)
(Am - bar on 5th) I will still be dreaming (G#m)
(A - open Chord) I have no thought of (E)time

For (B - bar on 7th) who knows where the ( A - bar on 5th) time goes?
(E - open) Who knows where the (F#m - Bar on II) time (A - open) goes? (F#m)
The link is then the intro repeated.

In verse to the A after "Time for them to go" is a bar at the 5th with the top E left open, and the same in the verse 3.

Hope this is a help

Regards,

Discourteous guest.

This might be a long shot:
I figured out some basic chords for this song in open D, but it's the wrong key for my voice. It needs to be in G. Would anyone have a few chords for this song in open G tuning to get me started? (I don't want to use a capo)

Don

In open G

Intro:
x00000 x00010 x00000 x02210 x04430 x02210

Verse:
000000 Across the evening sky
x02210 All the birds are x04430 leaving x02210
000000 But how can they x02210 know
It's time for them to x04430 go? x05550
x22210 Before the winter x44430 fire
x55045* I will still be x44430 dreaming 555555 555565 555555
I do not count the time 000000 000010 000000

Chorus:
For 777777 who knows where the 555555 time goes?
000000 Who knows x22210 where the 555555 time x22210 000000 goes?

Plenty of places to hammer on the 4th ie from 000000 to 000010 and back and 555555 to 555565 and back

*x55045 could be played x55040

Sounds an approximation anyway

Whoops! Some of the chords are in the wrong position for words eg first line chord should be before 'sky' not after - sure you'll suss it out if you play it and use your ears for when to change.

"Who knows where the time goes?"

Dunno. But . . .

"I know a bank where the wild thyme blows"!

In open E - I've never tried not sure it would work fantastically well. The original post with the addition of the 30 Dec 07 intro is pretty much spot on

Does anyone know what guitar tuning Judy Collins uses for her version of Who Know Where The Time Goes? When I watch her play it on the YouTube video and try to imitate it, my standard tuning does not work.    I figured she must be in another tuning. Thanks! Here is the link to the video:

the folks who were being sarky about 'guest' posters have obviously not been made into guests, unbeknown to themselves, due to their cookie (?) doing something (whatever?) as has occasionally happened to me and others I know- - - !!!!
Sometimes guests assume they are normal posters under their own name / pseudonym -- - and only discover they are gueats by accident.
Also - if someone is new to the site then perhaps they don't realise they ought to register, just wish to ask a simple Q of regulars. Perhaps we should be gentle with them, not sarky - - - --
