In t he thread about banning songs, Little Hawk mentioned that "Billy Don't Be A Hero" was so bad that it was embarrassing to listen to--even more embarrassing, when it was popular, I used to perform that song--I t got me started thinking about other songs that I have discreetly dropped from my repertoire--

1) "Long Tall Texan"--About thirty years ago, I played bass in a band called "The Country Clan"--Every nite, toward the end of the last set, the leaders wife would join him on stage to sing this song. They were perfectly serious.

2) "The Cover of Rolling Stone"--In my old band, each of the other players got to sing (or maybe it was "had to sing")at least one number. The steel guitar player only knew the lyrics to three songs, this being his favorite--

3)"Billy, Don't Be a Hero"--As part of my music education degree program, I spent a term performing for elementary school kids, and I did requests--

4)"Friend of the Devil"--I admit it, but everyone used to do it--

5)"Proud Mary"--A lot of us did terrible things during the Vietnam War years--

I find more and more I am singing the old songs, well-worn and well-known to many, less and less. Actually it's a bit of a shame -- they are so timeless -- songs like Lord Lovell, Plaisir d'Amour, The Wicked Youth, The Farmer's Wife, The Drummer and the Cook, the House Carpenter, etc. I am gravitating more toward more recent creations, like Nightrider's Lament, I Remember Loving You, and King of MErcy Canyon, because they have a fresher, newer tone to them. But with a couple of glasses of good wine, I'll drift back through the centuries and sing anything from Chaucer on up!

My whole damn repertoire book, Ted!

I can hardly concieve of singing Andy Williams Songs, when it was the other Williams (Hank) that I loved so much.....but there it is in my book..."HAPPY HEART"!

Also....and please forgive me....."Sometimes When We Touch"!! Dan Hill was my neighbour for a while, but the reason I sung it was cuz the paying customers ASKED for it.

It's interesting, Ted, because if my Mother were alive today, she'd say "NONSENSE! you sang those songs because they're harmonically interesting...and don't deny it. Don't be a "folk snob" Ricky!!!!"

There's a couple original songs I sang years ago, before I teamed up with Margaret, that I would be embarassed to sing now. Upon looking at songs I really love to sing, whether it be a new song, or an old tradtional one, the songs I wrote just don't measure up. A couple friends think I'm being too critical. I'm not a world weary adolescent anymore. I recorded one of the songs I wrote on an LP I did and garnered the comment from the reviewer in Come For to Sing Magazine the line: "the best song is Phil's rendition of Richard Thompson's "Poor Ditching Boy," the worst is "Gypsy Lady" from Phil's own pen, which he should wield with more caution." These days, I agree. The reviewer is still a friend, too. Good thread.

I've got a few songs I don't sing any more because they're politically incorrect, and my viewpoint has broadened to recognise the fact. There are some songs that don't fit the mood of the places I play, although I get dragged out to support people every once in a while and find that some old country standards go down well, even if they are as fresh as falling cow-plop and true as old dawg Trey. There are some songs I identified with when I was young that I can't identify with now, so I don't sing them. There are a lot of songs I don't sing because I can't remember those things ...what you call them ... lyrics? the words?

as I am constantly adding to my song experiences but being discerning in the process, I have a trail of titles and I occasionally back track.
I do not look for songs to learn, they find me now.
I feel sorry for those who are stuck in a time warp.
Its an evolving process, we should evolve with it should we not or we stagnate.
there are still so many who missed Stan Rogers.
Who knew Mike Deavin and today, who has met George Papavgeris?

Do you still have the rep book, Rick? Interesting things, those old rep books--A while back, I got together with a guitar playing friend    who'd just broken up with his long time girlfriend--we picked our way through a few Grandpa Jones tunes, and then he put on a clean copy of the old Speedy West/Jimmy Bryant LP that he'd just found--While he was in the kitchen getting some beers, I started poking around amongst the instruments and came across his old rep book on the piano, clipped open to 'The Worst That Could Happen"--

I used to sing a lot of very long ye olde Brit. Isles ballads that I find I dont have the patience for any more (and often can't remember all the words). Some, like Twa Sisters, I've replaced with melodically more interesting versions. Up until a year ago I'd abandoned all the songs I started out on 40-some years ago, like Franky and Johnny and On Top of Old Smoky...but now that I'm singing in a convalescent home these oldies are coming in very handy, just because they ARE so simple, easy and known by everybody. Boring has it's uses as welll, it seems.

"Two Brothers"--popular during the American Civil War Centennial. I have two cousins who are brothers, one born in Chicago and the other in Atlanta, and our grandfather was a Civil War historian, so we literally grew up in the middle of the Civil War. They used to make me sing it for them every time they saw me, which was pretty often, as we all lived within a few miles of each other. It's amazing how hokey and melodramatic it sounds to me now, when we used to think it was so beautiful and touching-- but, hey, I was 14, and they were 8 and 10.

There are those overplayed songs which people want you to play everywhere and make a lot of musicians want to assault folks with the mike stand. What I do is to play the "requests medley" which gets the whole horrible lot of them out of the way in just one song:

I dont think I've actually delibeartely given up old repertoire, but lifestyle changes sometimes mean you no longer go the sort of events where certain songs are suitable. So, regretfully, it is many years since I sang "The Mayor of Bayswater", "The Engineer's Wheel", "The Ball of Kerrymuir" ,"Dinah Dinah, show us your leg" or"The Good Ship Venus",
   However, I have recently had a knee operation and it is working rather well again, so it may be my services as full-back will be called for again, and the old songs can be dusted off. But I'm not holding my breath.

ah, greg...one of my fondest memories involves standing around at 2:30 AM after a sing, bellowing "The Mayor of Bayswater" with a group of reprobates...and watching the faces of those who'd never heard it before)....but, yes, events at which it would be acceptable are few and far between these days.

(and...when I sit down an READ the verses, I find that many were not even clever and well written; and that seems to be my criteria for not doing songs anymore. I find I can't force myself to sing stuff that is really poorly crafted....risqué or not.)

That's fair enough Bill, but I think that some of those rugby songs are beautifully crafted. "Life Presents a Dismal Picture" is a classic and it is not the only one by any means.

Sometimes I still sing "Bright Silvery Light Of The Moon", but I choose the spot carefully and I make damn sure to state that I didn't write it.

One man's overplayed song is another's bread and butter--Country Roads was always heavily requested,followed by equally heavy tips--I make no excuses, as I always needed the money--

For my most over-requested songs though, when   I worked as a strolling musician with a balalaika player, in addition to the usual real Russian and Gypsy songs, we usually had to play "Lara's Theme" at every table. "Those Were the Days" was a close second, with more than a few calls for "Sunrise, Sunset"--

I've never learned a song I didn't like. I've never had to depend on gigging for income so I've never learned songs with the aim of pleasing an audience. It's always been what has pleased me. But, since time has not stood still and I've changed right along with everything else, I'm not exactly the same person that I was when I learned "Friend of the Devil" almost thirty years ago. I tend to do songs that the "current version" of me has learned or written. That doesn't mean that the guy that learned "Friend of the Devil" isn't still back there in the corners of my psyche somewhere, but it takes certain situations (like a jam session with a heavy population of old hippies or young Deadheads) to get him to come out. Likewise, if I were in a session with a bunch of beginning bluegrassers I might do "Rocky Top" even though I'd usually rather eat my banjo than play "Rocky Top" on it.

Mainly songs that I learnt when I first started singing at Herga because you could get into the folk club free if you were a performer... but that accounts for some of the songs I still sing too. Where songs are accurate records of social conditions at the time the songs originated, I find it very annoying when the PC police try to suppress them because they don't comply with current PC criteria. But that's another thread...

Also songs on which I just sang harmony, and it was an effort to work out what the original tune was.

I remember hearing Martin Carthy saying at the English National Festival at Sutton Bonington several years ago that he'd stopped singing Fanny Blair, because he thought Higgins was guilty, and that Fanny had been abused and wasn't a perjuring little whore at all. That's not about political correctness, that's about the credibility of the song on its own terms.

M.Ted you have both my sympathy and grudging admiration. I never learned that particluar Joh Denver abortion and I am baffled myself as to why I have such a pathological loathing of it. It is something about the smugness of an audience which wants to kid itself it is actually feeling something... I don't know. I obviously need therapy to get over this. I simply do not learn songs which I hate that much. I have never been so poor that I couldn't say no to an audience. If I could vomit and sing at the same time it might be different. You must be a bit tougher than me!

For a long time I stopped doing T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday." It's a great song, but overdone. I played it so many times with so many bands that I actually got sick of it. Seems every band in the world does this song, and trots it out when they're asked to play some blues.

Wasn't until recently I ended my self-imposed moratorium, but I HAD to give it a something-else treatment on my harp solo -- I gave it some double-time bursts and threw in a "quote" from "After Hours," and that worked.

I wrote a song that my friends loved, and often asked me to sing, but I was never too happy with the words so I threw it out. Over time I've forgotten the words. When they ask for it now, they beg me to hunt for it. I probably have a copy of it somewhere, but I'm not looking hard.

I dunno. As I turn into a mellower and mellower crooner in my dotage, I'm going the other direction more--doing songs, or at least thinking about doing them, that I never would have considered in past years.   Like maybe, Moon River or Oh What A Beautiful Morning.

Aside from my advancing years, there's my daughters' longtime addiction to musicals, which I never had to listen to until the past ten years. Some of em stick, cause even if they're kinda goofy, they have great melodies and are thusly fun to sing.

Almost every Gordon Lightfoot tune. He was good in his time. All but 2 Bob Dylan tunes. I never had the nerve to do Desolation Row in public but I loved to sing it. " Country Roads " by John Denver. Did he write that tune ? Who didn't request this in the 70' s ?

Hmmm. I've had the nerve to do "Desolation Row" in public a number of times, and I always enjoy it thoroughly. People around here say I am Bob Dylan, but I look a lot younger and I don't smoke. Other than that, we're pretty much in the same groove, this due to my pickling myself in everything Dylan's done in the last 43 years till it became second nature.

Oh, my voice is a bit more conventional than his. Most people like that, but I love the way he sings. I don't try to imitate it, so much as just pick up certain nuances from it.

One Dylan song I've never tried to play is "Highlands".

Am just now taking a refresher on "Senor - Tales of Yankee Power". What an appropriate song to sing these days!

Thought I'd dropped the nursery rhymes and kids songs, 'til my friend had a baby, then they all came back up again. I think songs are linked to times and events, they can go dormant for a while, but they are liable to resurface whenever the situation arrises. - I've even been known to re-sing that Chesney Hawkes number at the end of a night with a lot of pissed up people!

I am in a 4 person oldies folk group performing mostly Kingston Trio and Peter Paul and Mary songs with a few Tom Paxton and GOrdon Lightfoot numbers tossed in to the set. We get lots of requests for all those old standards like Puff the Magic Dragon, 500 Miles, Today, Where have all the Flowers gone. etc, but 2 of our members refuse to play them. THey think they are too trite or cliche'd or something. I on the other hand, am a music whore and if people like them I would play them in heartbeat. Oh, well, takes all kinds, I guess

Say Little Hawk / Dylan Clone; Do you still do "Girl of the North Country " and "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine ' ? These are the 2 Dylan tunes I just can't thrown away. They say some very basic things that I haven't found elsewhere.
