Subject: Tech: Plagued with Pop Ups! From: JedMarum Date: 16 Aug 03 - 08:36 PM Over the last few weeks, I've just been absolutley plagued with Pop Up ads. What's up?? Is this a new plague? Is this an issue with how my browser is set up? Should I bother loading one of the anti-pop up packages? I've thought about identifying every one of the pop up ads and contacting the company that puts them out and telling them I'd never buy their product or service because of their outrageous, obnoxious and intrusive advertizing ... but we'd need a whole nation of complaints to make a difference. Anyone solve this problem? |

Go to Edit Down to Preferences Open the Privacy & Security section Down to Popup Windows (this is the third option) Select Suppress Popups That will eliminate virtually everything, they have an Exceptions section, but I don't want ANY, so I have never looked into that. At the moment, I can think of only one site that I'd like to have the popups, the University of Colorado Athletic site. That is a new development for them, so I may have to reconsider. I'll have to either stop going there or figure out the Exceptions section. There are a few sites I use that have enlarged pictures as popups, The Seattle Times is an example. I have no problem with these working, I suppose because I am initiating the operation. |

I don't us Opera 7 because my scrolling mouse doesn't like it (it has self-scrolling functions), IE because it is slower, and Netscape is irritating to me for reasons I haven't analysed. I have them all installed, and sometimes two running at the same time, when I want to transfer something. You could try installing another browser and seeing if that improves things. |

It got a great review in my local (Canadian) newspaper. The story featured the word-of-mouth success of the software even though it wasn't the main business of the company. The cost is $20 US. The software is invisible, except for a tray icon. The latter blinks when it's doing its thing... blocking something. The feature I love is that if your *want* a pop-up you simply hold the CTRL key when you click on a link. |

Unfortunately, the teaching in many recent (and current) marketing and management "schools" is that being noticed is all that counts. It doesn't matter whether you're noticed for being nice, or for being obnoxious, and anyone can be obnoxious. Many advertisers of the ilk who use methods like popups would consider a whole bunch of complaints as confirmation that their ads were doing what they intended them to do... by making you remember who they are. I have three on my Win98 system at the moment. All work on the MDI (Multi Document Interface) principle. Instead of yet another damned window appearing, a new "Tab" appears in a row along the top of your screen. You can have untold websites open at one time, yet keep track of them as easily as looking at the Tabs in an Index Book. They also Block Popups Rather than me trying to explain, Go To: MyIE2 Website - Work your way through the Tour. It's 'Freeware', and I'm sure you'll like it. MyIE2 requires Internet Explorer to be installed on your system. Mozilla - Is 'Open Platform' and has been around for yonks. I think some of the original Netscape Team were the originators. As far as I can make out from the current Netscape shambles, they are picking up the pieces. There are versions for Linux, Windows and MacOS X. Alas the 'Nurds' of the Mozilla site are 'developers', who assume you are computer literate. The site can be a tad hard to navigate. Win-Users - Check "Firebird" SimulBrowse - Was the original "Intelligent Browser", produced by Adam Stiles ca 1998. I gave some input into the development there-of. Adam has changed the name to NetCaptor, and is asking US$30 for his work. It's fair enough. Ummm... - Thread creep - We're supposed to be talking "Pop-Ups". From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Oct 03 - 11:57 PM In the last two days I've seen a new kind of ad that isn't a traditional popup and seems to get in past my firewall settings. It is a screen called "Messenger Service" and only has the x in the upper right corner. It offers text (that can't be highlighted or copied, and has no URLs or hot links). It can't be pushed behind anything else, and until you click the x or "okay" (I have just x'ed it, who knows what the "okay" does!) it doesn't go away. Just now there was a layering of three of them. I'd been away from the computer for a while, and I had minimized the IE screen. But I think the first time I saw it I didn't have any browser up at all. This didn't appear because of anything I did, it came on its own through some portal. One says "Message from Freedome Enterprises to Opportunity Seeker" and is offering work, the ususal classifed stuff "$4000 a week" trash. It says to write down the URL and gives a phone number. Another one said "Message from NetPopUp to You on. . ." with the date and time. Says it reaches millions of users, offers a URL and again the instructions to write it down. The third one was for a weight loss program. Again, no copying or clicking. Clearly the only way they can get these through is if they are text only and no links to set off the firewall or popup software. Annoying as hell, and kind of creepy. I do use Yahoo Messenger, but it is never left on, I only check it once or twice a day for messages. Anyone else seen any of these, have any answers as to how to block them? SRS |

What you need is a program which is freeware called 'Spybot S & D' or spybot search and destroy. This gadget removes spyware and ad-ware from your pc. Do a google search for it. I find it at http://security.kolla.de/ It is a good idea to read the instructions. Techies generally follow the adage, when all else fails read the manual, I would recomend reading at least some of the tutorial first if you are non technical and all of it if you think you are techincal. I hope that this helps you. |

(It's like the "no call list"--I paid for a service to block them and by doing so indicate my unwillingness to receive them). Those people should go get jobs that don't depend on stealthily putting their ads into people's faces. This isn't the same as the popups that come in behind the online newspaper you read, offering great travel prices or insurance or mortgage services. Those are small, have html in them and lots of color to catch your eye. These are different, small information boxes, the kind you get when you're ready to log off of your email, for example, when the message pops up and asks if you want to delete all of the messages in your trash. It has no color, only text (none that can be highlighted), no html. They're insidious things, because they seem to get in even if nothing else is going on. They are set up to always stay in front of whatever else you're doing. They're coming in via the DSL and getting through the firewall that is supposed to block this stuff. SRS |

I learned a long time ago that it makes sense to have an icon on the desktop for Control Panel, so my trip there was shorter, not going through the first two steps. But these directions are clear and correct. This program is not only in XP, it's in Win2000 and probably others as well. Actually, it's quite informative to look and see just what all is running. A lot of programs, when downloaded, set themselves up to load at startup. I'll look into this further and see if I can't kick out a few I rarely use. I don't mind going to a menu and starting them when I need them. Thanks, Bill! SRS |

I have now got the google toolbar and have never seen one since. According to google, they have blocked about 147 of them. Ps. how do you do a clickey to show another thread? |

There was a thread about this a few months ago but I wasn't able to find it by searching on "google" or "toolbar". I use WebWasher. It's free, and it stops popups cold. Much better than PopUpKiller, which made annoying noises and didn't work very well. AdAware is also very good, but it's best at cleaning out unpleasant spyware and data miner programs that have insinuated themselved into your computer, not at blocking popups. Happy surfing! (Mostly by being able to schedule downloads, or reconnect when you get cut off.) Take a look here, at the Pricelessware site These are the best ones. "What is Pricelessware? I use both DLExpert and Star downloader with success. Lately, Star has gotten the most praise in the alt.comp.freeware group, but that may just relate to who is posting. Anything in that list at Pricelessware will work ok. It may come down to simply how YOU like the interface and features *smile* Being on cable (which I hope to do soon), the speed is not the issue as much as the convenience. I kind of like the way DLExpert saves and displays stuff I have downloaded....I often just use the built in thing in my browser (Opera, mostly) but there the records are not kept permanently. With a download manager, you can set it like an alarm clock and set all sorts of parameters you want it to follow. Your choice.... |
