It's about a completely different style of music, the kind of music that has enthralled generations of frustrated, pimply, horny, lonely adolescent males between 13 and twenty-something with its heavy beat, its bad attitude, its screeching guitar solos, and its raging vocals. Yep. Headbanging songs. Heavy Rock, Acid Rock, Punk Rock, Progressive Rock, Electric Blues, Glamrock...all that stuff that parents hate and kids love, because it expressed their frustrations so brilliantly. Simply contribute your favourite (or most hated) headbanging titles of all time. You don't have to like the stuff. I don't like much of it, but I do like some of it. My first nomination is: SMOKE ON THE WATER (Deep Purple) It has to rate as one of the most relentlessly dumb and memorable songs of its type. An auditory trip through brute stupidity that has few rivals. My 2nd monination is: YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET (B.T.O.) I actually like it for some reason...good energy and enthusiasm. The kind of music I am referring to has really been around since Gene Vincent recorded "Be-Bop-A-Lu-La", although it didn't really hit its full stride until the late 60's when it pretty well took over for awhile. Show me a male who is 50 now who was not exposed to this kind of music. Show me one who did not at least partially meet the description "frustrated, pimply, horny, lonely adolescent male" at one time. It is a fact that most teenage boys are mysteriously drawn to music that expresses inchoate hostility and has a heavy beat. I wonder why? Well, they are in a situation where they feel powerless and oppressed by their parents, their school system, and the older world in general, where they don't have enough money, and can't find a girlfriend or get anyone to take them seriously. Why wouldn't they be frustrated and angry? Now, I recently saw the movie "Rock School", and it was great! It was all about the kind of music I'm talking about here, and the kind of guys I'm talking about...and it was darned funny, and actually enlisted one's sympathy for these lads, living out their fantasies of male grandeur through loud music. Downright hilarious. If you can't see the amusing and enlightening possibilities in putting together a list of the most classic songs in this genre, you may be the very thing those youngsters were legitimately protesting against! :-) Another nomination: "Highway to Hell" (AC-DC) - LH |

I figured she might know what head-banging music is, but she says she has heard the term somewhere but no idea what it means. Of course this is western Canada, and we are a little backward here. I asked her husband, who plays in a celtic and western band from time to time, and he said it was what a drunken bodhran player did. Yes, Littlehawk, I remember Jacques Piccard and his father, Auguste. I don't know if he had the rank of Capitaine, but he did work with the French Navy at one time. In Middle English, eldritch meant fairyland, but it has come to mean weird. |

Smoke on the Water - OK, but too much of a 'classic' now. I wouldn't classify much 'classic' rock as head-bangin' music. For instance, I LOVE Jethro Tull, but never banged my head while listening. I always thought of head-banging stuff as being even louder. Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' springs to mind. I saw them in London in 1980 (I think it was '80). I had a traumatic experience surrounding 'You Shook Me'. I was living in a dorm. The woman next door was engaged in 'shaking' with partner picked up in bar, and had that album, at volume eleventy-billion, on continuous replay during and after said shaking. They passed out after a while, but AC/DC was still goin' strong. I shut off the circuit breaker to her room for long enough to kill the music. Don't know if she was late for work the next day or not. In any case, every time I hear that song, I want to find out where she lives now and go strangle her. |

We can thank the great Jerry Lee Lewis for being one of the most early and historically significant headbangers of all time with his frenetic performances, and for telling all of England it could "k*ss his *ss". He was a headbanger before his time, and should serve as an inspiration to succeeding generations of angry young men who love loud music, mind-altering substances, sex, and violence. He also set a piano on fire onstage to outdo Chuck Berry, thus paving the way for other noisy, if talented idiots (like Hendrix and The Who) to do similarly destructive things in their pursuit of fame and notoriety. When I saw the thread title and LH's name on it, first person I thought of was you. Another good headbanger song was "Tell Laura I Love Her." I was putting the make on an older gal (I was 14 and she was 15) and I wasn't doin' so good. That friggin' song came on the radio (hifi) and spoiled my moves--which mostly consisted of trying to figure out just how a freakin' bra was hooked up in the back. She got all googoo over the song, and 'this magic moment' went away very fast. Had a woody for two days, and was bangin' my head against the wall, wanting real bad to howl at the moon. Hang tough, bro. |

Oddly enough, I like it. Paranoid hasn't been mentioned yet. It should have been. Black Sabbath at their most intelligent were pretty dumb - and that wasn't their most intelligent. Uriah Heep had a serious claim to being the worst band in the whole world at that time. So Easy Living should not be omitted. We will no doubt soon hear from AC/DC fans who will inform us what other aberrations apart from Highway to Hell and Whole Lotta Rosie were indispensable to the long locked and flared trouser brigade. They were often wrongly described as a heavy rock band. They were, in fact, an astonishingly inept blues band. They couldn't play fast enough or flashily enough to do real heavy rock. At least they never pranced around in lurid tight pants or bared their chests unnecessarily. I thought they had a blokish charm about them. I saw them again at Reading Festival, circ '78. They had improved a bit and weren't quite the same! |

Except the one that went Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry--that gets stuck in my head, interspersed with the theme to The Odd Couple, for some reason. Deep Purple, I'd go with Highway Star instead, for the solo. I liked Tull's Hymn 43 as a headbanger when I was in 5th grade. The Stones, Brown Sugar. I like Page's sculptural riffs and many things about Zepplin, but somehow they never quite hit the spot, innovative and interesting as they are. And I never thought anything of the Stairway solo. Didn't see why anyone would learn it instead of making something up. Yes had some headbangy stuff like Soundchaser, Southside Of The Sky, bits and pieces, and I liked them a bit. I found their spacey/treky image sort of embarrassing, but it was probably a pretty good advertising metaphor. I've arranged a cover of the mullethead-banger classic of all time, Freebird. I just play the diddlediddle diddlediddle lick over and over, and sing Lord help me I can't cha--ange. Little Richard singing Rock Island Line sounds pretty good. |

My husband and I like to freak the high schoolers on the last day of school by driving through the parking lot headbanging to "O Fortuna" cranked all the way UP with the windows open. For those of you going, "What?": "O Fortuna" has been used in a lot of movies over the years, so people who haven't heard _Carmina Burana_ (a modern arrangement of medieval bar songs about sex, girls, bad luck, and beer--great stuff!) probably know "O Fortuna" anyway. Anybody out there who's seen _Excalibur_ will remember it from Arthur's first brave ride and from his later valiant charge against despair. I think it's in a Conan movie too. The gist of the song, BTW, is "Luck, if you're a lady, I'm the bastard King of England." But this list must include "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen! |

From: M.Ted Date: 11 Nov 03 - 10:31 AM I second "Ballroom Blitz", also nominate "Dude Look Like a Lady" and "Walk this Way" from Aerosmith, "Seems to Me" from the James Gang, "Paradise City" from GNR is a must, and for those pensive moments, "September Rain" and "Sweet Child of Mine", can't forget Alice Cooper, with the classic, "I'm Eighteen" and more recently, "Poison"-- To me, the characteristic elements of headbanging music are the beat, either a throbbing duh-duh-duh-duh on the toms, or a boom-BAH boom-BAH on the snares, the guitar, with has to be sustained chords with a lot of distortion, and an inane hook line that can be screamed atonally along with the recording-- Nother great thing about headbanging music is that the bands like to get out the acoustic instruments and play slow ballads every once in a while, such as "Every Rose has it's Thorn", and Alice's "Every Woman has a Name"-- Almost forgot, though it is alternative and not metal, "Girlfriend in a Coma" is great fun, and much loved(though alternative fans and metalheads tend to hate each other)-- |

I love the bit about the inane hook line. So true. The thing about the odd slow acoustic ballad is very notable too. Metalheads find it very cool to do that occasionally, and it helps if the ballad is either about mystical sword/sorcery kind of stuff or is romantic and tender...then just when they've lulled their awed audience into that quieter mood...they BLOW 'EM OUTTA THEIR SEATS with a pyrotechnic burst of screaming guitar riffs and exploding visual effects. From: M.Ted Date: 11 Nov 03 - 02:43 PM Even if you don't like headbanging music, if you ever taught guitar, more than likely, you had students who wanted to learn to play it, for the simple reason that the kids who like headbanging music are in the right age range for guitar lessons(and generally, their parents are desperate to find *something* that their kid is interested in doing)-- I am sure there are some of you who told those kids and their parents what to do with their money-- but most of us couldn't afford to be choosy, so we sat down and figured out how to teach power chords and all the rest of the stuff--It has it's moments too--there is nothing more wonderful than to the sparkle of joy in the eyes of a boy who has just played "Smoke on the Water" for the very first time. First of all, it's insulting to categorize a lot of headbanging music as "stupid" as has been done above. The sub-genre is typically a simplistic form, but hardly stupid. The musicians are putting a lot of effort and energy into the music - and much of the time, they're playing some pretty good riffs too. A good head-banger isn't an essay with footnotes. I'd nominate the instrumental "Where the fuck's my wallet" for the title alone, only having heard of it, can't remember who did it. I'm only part folkie, but the folk music I grew up with involved folks, folks hanging out, with style, playing music, and talking. The folks I remember were people as comfortable discussing Goerte as subtle refinments in making fish batter. I wouldn't immediately associate electrified communications forums with folk music, anyway, but to the extent I do, it's because this forum is broader, more free-wheeling--a stone-soup get-together internet forum where even the trolls are fun. I don't have folk credentials to say so, being a modest dabbler, but I think it all goes to folk music somehow. Let other styles sit in their seats and face forward. As someone said on another thread, folk is different. |

And I don't dress like a head banger (or a goth, for that matter) and I could give a rats ass what people think of me at concerts. To me head-banging is a physical action, as is moshing. Maybe people's definition of head-banging is a style of music, but to me it's anything that I can throw myself into and bang my head. Angus Young is the god of head-banging, if you ask me. I have long hair, I don't get headaches, while I dance, my head moves up and down - I am a head banger. Fred - Ahh. Goethe is cool. Don't currently know too many people who can talk about his work intelligently. I have wonderful friends, but few received a classical education. Of course, they are happily making more money that I am . . . |

I can see how it might prove fatal in some cases...concrete and other building materials lie heavy on the stomach. Now, drinking one's way into a stadium...THAT's a concept most headbangers could definitely relate to! It's the pits opening for a famous band, because their audience is not there to see you, and is likely to let you know it in very obvious ways. This gets more perilous, the more violent the style of music. There's no real danger in opening for a famous folkie, for instance. Most of the bands mentioned above certainly were not headbangers. I was a headbanger and was proud of it I still love the energy in the music. I know its very popular with the seudo intellects to call it inane and stupid but I hope I don't have to point out to folkies how pointless and stupid a lot of the lyrics in folk music are. Live and let live people. If you don't understand it, it doesn't mean that its stupid. If you want to be a real muso you should be able to embrace a range of music. Anyway headbanging is mostly associated with the NWOBHM. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal to the uninitiated. But not exclusivly. Some of those bands were Saxon, Iron Maiden, Accept (from Germany), Sampson, Black Sabbath, Dio, Motorhead, MSG etc. So in terms of great headbanging songs. Motorhead (by the aforementioned) Motor Cycle Man and Dallas 1 pm by Saxon. Turn up the night and TV Crimes by Black Sabbath, I speed at Night and We Rock by Dio. I could go on and on. And LH we weren't all spotty, lonely youths. I remember those days in Belfast very well and I don't remember being lonely much. |

Nor did I ever say that their fans were all stupid, many were/are not. As for the musicians, many of them are/were excellent musicians and smart people. It's just that the stupid side of that type of music is very funny...as is the stupid, pretentious, dead serious side of folk music, but in a different way...it's more low key on the whole, to say the least. For a humorous movie about heavy metal, see Spinal Tap. For a humorous movie about folk, see "A Mighty Wind". Both are quite funny, but Spinal Tap is funnier, because heavy metal tends toward more extreme situations, which makes for great humorous possibilities. There is probably a good deal to laugh about in any style of music, if you look at it from a slightly skewed angle of observation or focus on its more close-minded afficionados with their little mind games of oneupmanship and "specialness". Now, I realize that by strict definition you are quite correct that true headbanging music started in the late 70's, and I am familiar with some of it. But for the purposes of this thread, I am after songs that: 1. are meant to be played really f**king LOUD 2. are obviously aggressive and youth-oriented 3. express some measure of hostility toward "straight" society and its authority figures, such as teachers, parents, bosses, politicians, etc...the more hostility the better 4. or just plain ROCK! This can include happy songs too. So...rather than just pure headbanging music, I believe this would include certain songs from the following genres: Rock n' Roll, Rock, Hard Rock, Acid Rock, Heavy Metal, Folk-Rock, Glamrock, Techno, Electric Blues, Rap, Punk, New Wave, Alternative, Grundge, Ska, Hip Hop, and who knows what the heck else, as long as it's meant to be played f**king LOUD! As to my comment about "inane" it was meant with deep affection and in the best possible sense--I mentored a fair number of aspiring metal guitarists, and, though I seldom admit it, had a really raw high power band in the early seventies, even before people called it heavy metal(people called it just "heavy" music first)-- The thing about metal related music is that, even though it is very commercial, it is mostly really well constructed music, built from interesting musical ideas, and full of great guitar playing--it is real "live" music, which is to say, music created to be played live, instead of music that is created in the editing room to be good background music for a slick video-- |

Some bands took themselves entirely too seriously and your right that's when they tended to become more than a little silly. But I have to agree the genre has spawned many talented musicians and a lot of the music is well constructed and sophisticated and nobody could play a heavier riff than Tony Iommi. |

Hawk, Yngwie is good for ripping your face off with incredibly fast, balls-to-the-wall guitar solos (When I was a teenager, I was convinced that, if I ever learned to play a certain segment of "Far Beyond the Sun," I would become God--no, not really, but I hope you know what I mean), but he's not much for rocking, headbanging stuff. For impressive guitar playing, look for the complete "Speed Kills" solo video by Michael Angelo. It's INSANE. Or watch him play his double-necked guitar with one hand on each fretboard, harmonizing leads with himself. Not something I'd put on in the car, but it's an impressive spectacle.
