Can anyone offer me advice.

I have Norton Internet Security installed and it has been running OK.

Suddenly the other day I could not perform a live update to the virus section. Kept getting LU1803 message. This advised me to unistall live update and reinstall. This I did. No joy.

I tried the Norton webpage but their on line help was no use, same problem still and no means of using e-mail to query the fault.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Take care with this suggestion...

Search for file called HOSTS

If a viral load has attacked, it may have messed up that file to divert you from finding Norton's site. You can delete the bad entries with notepad - it is a text file.

but there may be other solutions - this may not be the problem.

Shanghaiceltic,

I had this problem late yesterday (Monday).   I had svchost.exe System using 100% of my CPU (viewed in Windows Task Manager) even though I did not initiated any process. My computer almost froze up so I shut down. I did a System Restore without luck, I still got the LU 1803 error. I ran Norton Virus Scan twice for a total of 2 hours.

I also went to the Norton Support web site and will run Solution 2: Repairing LiveUpdate (detailed instructions on the link below). If that does not work then you and I will have to try Solution 3: Removing and Reinstalling LiveUpdate but you MUST uninstall ALL Symantec products!!, search for all Norton program files or folders and delete what is there then REINSTALL LiveUpdate and ALL programs. What a pain.

I have XP Pro. What is your OS?

Error: LU1803

I forgot this: on the link I provided above, there is a link you can send your computer system information to help resolve the issue. It is called Symantec Automated Support Assistant.

You must uninstall the old version of the program you are attempting to reinstall or upgrade. That's just the way it works with Norton. I ran into that error message and asked the IT folks about it at my university. You shouldn't have to uninstall all Norton products. But if you're putting in a new version of Antivirus in particular, then uninstall the old one first. I recently put in a version of the new Corporate Edtion (a site license for the entire university covers it) and had to take out the old one.

Thanks for all your advice. I will try this.

And yes it is a real version downloaded off the net from a Norton site not a dodgy version bought for the equivalent of a $1 on a local market.

And yes it is a real pain in the bum. But over here there are plenty of locals trying to develop new worms and trojans as they have sod all else to do, and I need to protect my PC.

Notice, also, that the recent Mydoom/Novarg virus "... and prevents infected machines from accessing anti-virus sites..."!

If you can not access Norton's site at all to download their Mydoom removal kit, try some other anti-virus 'medicine', eg F-Secure's disinfection tool from here. It should do the trick - if the problem turns out to be Mydoom, that is.

NOrton (in various forms) seems to get teh blame Maybe rightly for many conflicts.

I ahve an odd one at the moment. First I had the usual problem that if I scan outgoing email, and have activated disconnect upon completion of uploading/downloading, then I get disconnected while scanning and the email won't go.

THere are two workrounds that might work, first to go to manually disconnect, which is a royal pain if you forget, and the second to grant permission to outlook - real dumb since outlook express and outlook are the main means for spreading viruses.

The third is to disable scanning of outgoing mail - acceptable since if you scan all incomings you should not have any virusses in your system hence noe in any outgoins. So I've done that and now although the tab says the scan outgoing is OFF, Norton still scans outgoings, and I still et disconnected.

Next stop uninstall and reinstall NOrton, I fear.

Any other ideas?

Our Norton has never been the same since some wit sent us a "you have a small p***s problem" joke email. It infected Norton and every time we tried to run it the "joke" just cut in. Despite uninstalling and reinstalling, all we can do now is run Live Update and right click to scan files or drives. If I try to open Norton it says "Norton Integrator could not intitialise the current frame class. Please make sure you did not directly run the integrator". It's not a virus, they said, it's a harmless joke email...

I've come across this problem twice recently - once on a friend's machine and once on mine. The problem is that the install sometimes fails to detect previously installed versions of Norton products and remove them. After installation the post-installation Live Update seems to work correctly, but after that Live Update does not have a complete list of things to look for updates for (my friend's machine had about 4 items, mine eventually only 2!)

My system first showed symptoms with occasional system errors from the Symantec Integrator, but what made me look at the problem was when running 2 copies of Internet Explorer, terminating one kept the system busy for several minutes or hung completely. ccApp was using most of the computer time and this convinced me that there was a problem with the installation. I manually deleted all Norton products from the system and removed the Symantec key from the HKLM/Software section of the registry (although I don't think the latter was really necessary; it just meant I had to reenter the product verification key). Then I reinstalled and everything worked perfectly.

I've noticed recently in the local PCWorld that some copies now have a sticker on the wrapper saying something along the lines of "Important - you must uninstall previous vesions before installing this"

A couple of months ago I was trying to put back a dual platform setup that I'd deleted. I didn't have up-to-date virus definitions in the new-old platform, but I got the error message stated above. In the process of trying to fix it I decided I'd try downloading the Norton from the free-two-week trial offer. I figured if it could get through it could install itself and connect to the home database and download the updated definitions. At that time I didn't know to uninstall the old Norton program first and it became a huge tangle. Still is, as far as I know. I put it in a backup file on a remote hard drive and used Norton Ghost to restore my computer to it's old cranky but stable single platform self. Maybe I'll make room and try the second platform again one of these days, maybe not.

If you are uninstalling Norton, then it would be wise to disconnect the broadband while you're doing it. No need to leave the system open to whatever might drift in.

Just a few minutes ago, I was getting ready to try the Norton LiveUpdate (LU) fix and had printed the 7 page long LU1803 Error explanation and the 3 possible solution instructions.

Then I decided to try LU one last time, I noticed that is was running automatically in the background when I tried to start it manually. Since this is Wednesday, this is the day Norton updates its virus definitions. They loaded on my machine automatically and tried LU 3 more times to confirm that all was working OK.

Don't ask me what happened, other than the problem must have been with LiveUpdate FROM NORTON not my machine. For 2 days I could not use LU then all of the sudden LU worked.

The moral: procrastinate when dealing with computer problems and your problems may "fix" themselves (I really don't believe that).

Good Luck Shanghaiceltic. Let us know if you get LU working.

I was going to uninstall and re-install Norton again today, but before I did I thought I would give it one more go.

No problem at all this time. As Cruiser said maybe best to procrastinate.

I have a feeling that maybe the Norton live update site had a problem.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help.

I went in to update the virus list on the kids' computer last night, and realized that we do have some sort of schizm between the Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus. I have to load them separately because Firewall says it can't open initiate the Antivirus part of the routine, though I used to be able to have the Firewall update everything. I probably should revise my advice about not uninstalling all of the Norton stuff. I can get it all to load, but maybe by tweaking it more I'd have it back to my old workability as it was before I upgraded the AntiVirus.
