Thanks, Amos, for providing the blue clicky I tried but failed to make (and I even used Max's "blue clickys for dummies"!)

I just listened to Dan's piece again. Pete has been such a wonderful influence on so many of us--not just musically, but in his unwavering commitment to the causes he cares about. It continues to shine through after all these years.

I recall "field collecting" (the old way of downloading) quite a few of Pete's songs when WFMT-FM radio in Chicago ---the Midnight Special program---still on the air today---did a tribute to him on his FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY. One of those songs was "Bells Of Rhymney" as recorded at Newport in '58 or 59. What an amazing performance it was and is. I listened to it over and over. That was the year I graduated from high school I think. At night I'd fall asleep listening to it and thinking of doing it myself but with spoken stuff between verses. I do wonder where I got that idea!? All these years later, that very idea somehow sort of became my style. No way can I ever thank Pete enough for his grand inspiration on so very many levels all through the years.

Pete, HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!

Art Thieme

i grew up on the first live set with arlo guthrie, "together". you can hear a lot of him in my music, if you wade out past the joan baez and mary black... i wonder what it's like to be such a thorough-going, multi-generational influence?

85 and still truckin. go man go!

tHE WHOLE SEEGER FAMILY has always been so musical.
Now his grandson Tao is carrying on the fine tradition!
I am glad i got to see hime in concert several times.
Once in the 70's he played at a sculpture garden in
Nebraska at teh university in Lincoln. I also was able
to take my children to see him in the 80's in the Bay
Area. HE can be counted on to get the whole crowd
singing whenever and whereever he plays and sings!
Nothing creates a better bond than singing together!
(well almost nothing) Here is from the liner notes of
a c.d of his (For Kids and Just Plain Folks)
"Some say 'Wrap your troubles in dreams and dream your
troubles away'," Pete observed. "But I think if songs
can help us explore our past and our present, and even
speculate about our future, then you and I have a better
chance of going out and doing someting about our troubles."
ArthurLevy, N.Y. 1997
Appleseed recordings recently cam out with volume 3 of SEEDS:
The songs of Pete Seeger. It is a 2 disc set. 434 musicians
participated in the trilogy (3 volumes) one disc is pete
singing, the other is of a tribute to him by his friends.
Thanks, Pete for all you have inspired in so many of us!!

A good reminder to listen to some Pete. Just came across one of the old Broadside Recordings with Newspapermen and other classics at the local used record store, and there's always that song about the house, the jolly little house with the Queen Anne front and the Mary Ann behind, and Waist Deep in the Big Muddy, what contrasts, and talk about timeless.

Happy Birthday Pete! Thanks for all of that music.

Susan

Seattle-- Ah wis in hie schuil, an wairkin backstage at a fundraiser concert for a Puget Sound program inspirit by Pete's Clearwater environmental project. Pete wis MC for the concert, an Ah wis jist in awe, kennin the history an power o his music, his life, his activism. After the concert, Ah wis reddin up the "green ruim" backstage, an strugglin tae get a muckle grait bag o trash oot the door an ower tae the dumpster. (Weel, the bag wisnae sae big, rilly, but Ah wis a wee bit o a thing masel, an the wairk o handlin the unweildy bag & negotiatin the heavy metal door wis mair than Ah cuid manage.) Pete comes doon, sees ma moment o struggle, says, "Here, let me help you with that!" & blythely lifts the trashbag oot o ma hauns. Ah'm left haudin the door an stutterin protests tae the effect o "But ye're Pete Seeger! Ye suidnae be takin oot garbage for the lowly likes o me!" He jist grinned an let me keep haudin the door 'til he gaet back frae the dumpster. O coorse, it wis precisely because he WIS Pete Seeger that he did what he did. A momentary act, aye, an nae muckle in the grand scheme o things, but Ah'll ne'er forget it... an Ah intend tae spend the rest o ma life sairvin ithers wi the same respect an thochtfu courtesy he offerit me.

Happiest o Birthdays tae ye, Pete!

--Cuilionn

I am a week or so late, but Happy Birthday anyway.
My Dad used to play your records when I was growing up and despite the corruption of brain cell activity during my youth and beyond, the songs have never left me. He would play your records at 6:30 in the morning to get us going before school, and of course any other moment he could after we came home from school. My favorite record had to be the first live double lp you did with Arlo at Carnagie Hall. Every song you sang together is memorable and there has never been a better sounding reporte with an audience on a live album. Thank you for being such a great musical influence on me and the world. So...
Nations are warring, and Bush is vexed...I hope you stick around to see what happens next...

I've been lucky enough to see Pete in person a few times. The thing that struck me most about him is the almost magnetic attraction between him and young people; they are drawn to him and vice versa. During Vocal Week at Augusta 8-10 years ago, Kathy Fink (& Marcy Marxer?) arranged for him to speak during one of the "classes". Afterwards, he was surrounded by young people -- and I'd swear he was positively glowing!

I think a lot of people may get set in their ways as they get older, and may feel threatened by the new ideas that young people hold and/or represent. Pete, however, seems always open to new ideas and new ways of thinking -- more than open to them, he welcomes & encourages them! I think he sees young people as the future, and enjoys spending as much time with them as possible -- and, crucially -- not to tell them what he thinks, but to listen to what they think.

Also, one of the most inspiring things I've ever heard in my entire life: NPR once aired a recording of him speaking to the House Unamerican Activities committee... he gave them what for! This powerful committee had *SO* many people running scared, but he stood his ground and said to them -- in a voice wonderfully full of outrage and indignation -- "SHAME ON YOU!!" One of the most stirring, moving things I've *ever* heard.

if only there were more like him!

Sharon, amen to that!

YY
