Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Rick Fielding Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:23 PM My guess is that unless the creep destroys it, it will be found and returned. A pox on those who would undermine a good community. Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: DonMeixner Date: 11 Aug 00 - 12:29 PM How can you adequately comment on this. Few instruments are as well documented as to ownership and a place in history. In time this machine may belong in the Smithsonian but right now it still belongs to Pete. Hopefully it will be returned. Don |

Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Wesley S Date: 11 Aug 00 - 03:33 PM I don't believe in the death penalty but this just might make me change my mind. During the 1880's here in Ft Worth some cowboys had a disagreement with someone so they hung him. Several days later the dead man was cut down and buried by his friends. The cowboys dug the dead man up and hung him again. So if anyone wants to round up a posse to after the varmint that did this count me in. Then we can go after whoever it was that smashed up Bill Monroe's mandolin. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Rick Fielding Date: 11 Aug 00 - 05:13 PM Until someone comes up with the details, my memory is of a Vega Tubaphone pot, with a custom lignam vitae neck. There are no inlays, and it might still say "this machine surrounds hate, and causes it to surrender," on the head. Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Wesley S Date: 11 Aug 00 - 05:19 PM Wasn't the head a rather unique design?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: GUEST Date: 11 Aug 00 - 05:41 PM Well I just replace 300 feet of 1" anchor line on the boat I will just start tying hangman nooses every 50 feet so we dont have to use the same noose twice. Sailor DAn |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Peter T. Date: 11 Aug 00 - 06:04 PM I would have thought hanging someone for stealing Pete Seeger's banjo would be somewhat contrary to the message emanating from the banjo. Much as I revere PS and his banjo. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Mark Clark Date: 11 Aug 00 - 06:12 PM Good thought, Peter T. Let's keelhaul him instead. - Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Dave Swan Date: 11 Aug 00 - 07:34 PM Obviously the idiot who took it has no idea what he's stolen from the world. No one in his right mind could have taken such a thing. But a thing it was. It's Pete who's the communicator, not the machine he uses. Bob Copper met Pete recently. Bob says that while Pete's not as physically vigorous as he once was, his fire and his need to connect and communicate are intact. Let's hope for the speedy return of the banjo, and be glad the Seeger remains. Dave |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Bugsy Date: 11 Aug 00 - 08:58 PM So, that's why Pete has been seen walking round town pointing sidways with his left hand and scratching himself under the arm with his right! Seriously though, Anyone who's pinch someone elses musical instrument has no love for music, or musicmakers. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: CamiSu Date: 12 Aug 00 - 03:03 AM We'll keep an eye out, though I doubt it will get up this way. BUT Pete is still quite vigorous, and if you get him started on a subject near to his heart, and be prepared to stand and listen for a while. (QUITE a while...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Pete Seegers Banjo stolen From: Ron Olesko Date: 14 Aug 00 - 07:33 PM A few more details: The banjo was in a green cloth case. The banjo was built by Seeger as a prototype which was later produced and sold by the Vega company. It has the following words written around the head of the instrument: "ThisMachine Surrounds Hatred and Forces it to Surrender". Perhaps everyone can pass this information on to their local music stores and pawnshops. Hopefully someone either return it or be found trying to sell it. |
