Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs! I've had a PM from Nick advising me that Farlington folk club is on it's annual holiday on wednesday! Is a conspiracy? Are they meeting in secret? Have I frightened them?
Anyway, did Dalby red and black run on saturday, the trails where bone dry so we managed to round theme both in two and a half hours. Glenn dropped the pressure in his new marzocchi bomber to 180psi in an attempt to gain more travel........... oh sorry......... this isn't a mountain bike site is it.

We are geared up for next weeks leg of your world tour over in sunny Farlington and will aim to start at 8.30. Let me know nearer the time if you want any more directions than are at the web address I gave before.

If you do rustle up more than the two of you do warn people not to expect to play loads of solo tunes are limited because of numbers - though there are plenty of opportunities to join in and play if the fancy takes (with the usually accepted things common courtesies of playing in an adjacent key, not playing three times as loudly as the singer etc etc!) Last night when we were expecting a quiet evening there were still a dozen of us and there was still only a chance of doing two or three solo things each. There are more people coming next week in theory.

How about a flamenco intro/piece of your choice with something like that progression in D / Dm with a touch of a pause - hint of a nod - and fiddle can pick up the theme and then into the song and then fill round the singing? You'll soon get the idea but we can have a word when you come. The song has that B movie Spaghetti western sort of sound if you know what I mean.

Don't forget Javier recorded a certain falseta in 1931 with Manuel Torre which you allways play so well Ted. As seen in the "Rito y Geografía del Toque" series, Diego del Gastor played a version using sixteenth-notes. The D minor and A7 inversions offer chromatic motion (one fret of difference). In the first part, the fourth and fifth strings are played just before each chord change. Notice the left-hand slide at the end of the eighth complete compás. These details reveal Javier's smooth and intelligent left-hand fingering. The right-hand thumb is used for most of the falseta.

The "G" indicates a golpe (tap), and the letters below the staff, pimae, represent the striking-hand thumb, index, middle, ring, and little fingers, respectively. The numbers 1 to 4 above the staff respresent the fingers of the fretting hand, index to little. An "s" indicates a fretting-hand slide. Enjoy...

What are you to expect on Wednesday in English? Well -

From about 8.15/8.30 onwards people will start arriving. There will (probably) be somewhere between 10 and 15 of us all of whom contribute in some form or another to varying degrees of proficiency.

Material varies from unaccompanied (Thousands or more/Adieu Sweet Nancy/Grey Funnel Line) to self written modernish stuff, to instrumental music. We tend to literally go round in a circle with the option to do something or choose something or not.

We are hopefully welcoming and inclusive, and supportive and appreciative of what people come and contribute - pretty much regardless of what level people are at. It much depends who comes but some are used to performing and playing at greater venues than ours, some of us are relatively new to playing folk in public.

Some things we all join in on, some are just solo things. If you want people to play invite if you don't want them to just say (though there are very few who will just join in. Glaring usually works...)

Dear Nick, lynne, Alistair, Duncan, Ben and everyone else whose name I didn't catch,
               What a corking start to my world tour last in Farlington was. Lots of communal singing, great harmonies, fiddle, bass, and a lot of Yamaha guitars!
               We loved it and will certainly go back, everyone was friendly, chatty and nothing was too much trouble for the landlord.
               I even played along to a Bob Dylan song ( but in a different key to everyone else)I recommend all Hullites to go along to this pub, it is a bit like taking a happy pill. Sessions are every wednesday.


ps: Adam. it's true. Harpmaker did have to teach me chord shapes a few years ago so I could accompany people. There is no written tradition in flamenco guitar so I just make the stuff up as I go along. I didn't know an E from My elbow.

The El Ted world tour rolled into Farlington last night like a banshee howl, scattering chickens and tractors in its wake. The local folkies threw themselves prostrate at El Ted's feet as his fast-fingers flew over his fretboard to create sounds like had never been heard in these parts before - and he was only tuning up.

Bathed in sweat, El Ted's flamenco both soothed and stimulated the eager Farlington punters who were awestruck in admiration at his incredible iberian instrumentation. Only once did El Ted lose his cool, when asked to play an encore after a particularly strenuous tune but he rose to the challenge like a matador gored by the bull only to rise from the dust and plunge his steely blade into the quivering...(that's enough reviews of El Ted's world tour - Ed).

Mostly for El Ted but this is also a limited time offer to see just over 10 seconds of Ted in action at the Farlington Cowshed (that's in action not inaction for those of you with a Lynx browser that only works with sound) at the beginning of his World Tour. He was ably supported by daughter Sweetfia who hasn't really had a mention yet but who sang us three enjoyable songs. (It will not be there for long as it will suck up bandwidth like a j edgar.)

It's a highly compressed avi (but still just over 1mb) of questionable quality so I'd appreciate if the whole world doesn't decide to download it - plus it will take a bit of time if you are on a dial up. If you do download it can you right click and save it to disk rather than running it. PM when you have got a copy, Ted, and I'll probably shift it then. You'll need a copy of Windows Media Player or similar to play it. Just a little memento.

There's also a jpg of them leaving (taken as insurance just in case there were any rumours of them not getting away from these deeply rural parts.)

i hate those 3 hour exams i have one IN THE MORNING next week. how do they expect you to concentrate in the morning, AND for 3 hours straight!!! they should give you an hour and half, and then the other half another time. even in the PM with an hour break or something would be nice.

With Ted's permission I could let you have an audio file of what Ted played when he came to visit us as an mp3 or something - there were four separate pieces as I remember, but the bit of video you saw is the only bit I took.

In the good old days when I were a nipper doing "O" levels I can remember doing three separate exams on the same day (ending up with a biology exam which included a practical of dissecting a piece of fish - in mid summer it was unpleasant to say the least). They seemed to enjoy having two in a day when I did A levels too. Luxury these days just to have the one in a day spread over weeks ...

But seriously, good luck with your exams Sweetfia and any others who may be enduring them.

It will probably be a few days until I find some time but I'll see how big they are. Last time I tried it created an enormous file in order to get a decent quality. If it isn't feasible I'll let you know. I have broadband at work so sending is no hassle.
