Hi Bobert,

You may need to go by Freighter rather than on a regular passenger ship. But don't despair, they are cheaper & offer a high standard of cabin.

Try these two sites which specialise in this form of travel (both US based).

www.freighterworld.com

www.freightercruises.com

Cheers

Dave

The Cunard Line runs the Q.E. 2 from LA to Australia and I am sure you could find a local link to NZ from there. Or you can get a freighter cruise that goes from New York to Auckland, among other ports. See http://members.aol.com/CruiseAZ/world.htm.

You will soon not be able to go to New Zeeland any more on account of Shania Bloody Twain 'as bought the place! Lock, stock, and kiwi, it's all 'ers now. She saw Lord of the Rings and said to 'er 'usband "What a lovely view! I want that place. Let's buy it." It's a bleedin' disgrace the way these rich people carry on!

There's always the hard way, going to a yacht harbour and seeing if anyone wants crew. There seems to be a shifting (shiftless? Sorry) population doing just that. See you around if you make it.

Aghree with Gurney, Bobert. Go in a sailing boat. You'll have a lot of fun.

Friends of ours traveled the world on container ships. Said it was great.
Bobert once you've come as far as New Zealand it's a short trip over to Australia. Come and visit. We'd love to have you do that Joy and True-love

Well, I'm learnin' a lot of stuff... I'm not all that wild about a sail boat. I used to crew a lot about 30 years ago on a friend sailboat and it was either a lot of work or nuthin was happenin'. The entire thing about New Zealand has a lot to do the the political climate in the US should Bush capture another 4 years. I'm not too sure that I can put up witha bunch of rednecks runnin' the show and telling me just how smart they are. Enough on that...

So I might just have to take 4 years off from America and New Zealand is a possibility. Australia is as second possibility. Norway would be a possibility but I don't think I could take 6 months without seeing the sun. The Carribean is out because I don't like hurricanes... Kind hard to please...

The idea of taking a freighter to New Zealand is somewhat appealing since it is the only way to get the P-Vine to go and it doesn't seen all that expensive either....

Bobert, I"ve been thinking of extended "vacations" for the same reason. Vancouver is nice...

Check the results of the Australian election before you come here, Bobert. You might have to put up with John Howard for three years, and that's nearly as bad as Bush for four.

As has been said to me (in NZ)

NZ is not the end of the World - but you can see a lot of it from there.

My mother took a boat from NZ in 1975 ish and that was a cruise ship making it's last voyage before meltdown. There were no regular passenger ships plying from the UK to NZ even then, flying was cheaper and faster. She couldn't fly on medical grounds.

Ah, I found this thread. :)

Ok, I hear that NZ is very hard to immigrate to; is this so?

I fell in love with Vancouver, bC, which is only a two-hour drive north of seattle. that is where I would go if I left the country to live elsewhere.
