Scientists now reckon that Chocolate is good for bad coughs, tests have shown that it is 30% better then Codine, the usual ingrediant in cough medicines. WAYHAY, Ted sod the Marmite sarnies, I want several bars of Cadbury's at next week's gig !!!!!!!!

I could hardly believe the good news so I looked it up on Google. I found good old Dr. Weil recommending dark choc as an antioxidant for flu, at least. Works for me!

Cadbury's ....that isn't chocolate. Chocolate is at least 80% cocoa solids and keeps you buzzing for hours. Try a bottle of Champagne and a kilo of belgian chocs. Beats anything you can put up yer nose. (like Sinex or olbas oil :-))

er not quite - I heard the BBC program too. The active ingredient gives you better protection, and a bar of chocolate was about the same as several proprietry cough mixtures. But the Belgians would argue that UK chocolate is actually chocolate flavoured sugar. So maybe it works best with REAL chocolate.

The "news" about chocolates and coughs is not new. The compound under discussion in chocolate is theobromine, which is chemically related to theophylline, and both have antitussive (anti-coughing) properties. Theophylline is really potent, though, and is found in many drugs, like Theo-dur, which is used to treat asthma. (I worked on the drug professionally and, personally, I'd never take it.) However, chocolate is a potent mucous producer in many people (like me) and it makes people cough. I think the only remedy for chocolate-induced coughing is to eat more chocolate for its antitussive properties. :-)

I like Padre's decision to eat Godiva dark chocolate ice cream because he can't get a flu shot. LOL. I think I'll do the same.

Garlic and chocolate sandwiches... I'll have to try that. (For some sarnies that are a lot weirder than that, try this South African site I found - Wacky Sarnies. For example - from California - "My mother's favourite is mashed sardines on white bread, with condensed milk poured over! ")

well, I think I eat my weight in dark chocolate every year, and I have not been sick much...that ought to be proof enough for anyone!

(and Trader Joe's, where I shop a lot has taken to putting these amazing 82% and 86% S. American bars right by the register....right beside the 1½ lb. bars with almonds...what IS a connoisseur to do?)

**Don't do the booze if you have a throat irritation, as alcohol is very damaging to the vocal folds!

When nuclear disasters & other such bad radiation leaks happen, dark chocolate is usually handed out to the children, elderly, and those with compromised health until proper supplies can be sent in to the region. Is the ingredient, theobromine, what fights radiation poisioning?
    I recall that my pals in the anti-nuke movement who were always up on all the latest research (usually hidden from the public by the US gov't.) sometimes called me & told me to try to stay inside, & take Kelp pills or eat Chocolate-as dark as I could get-because a radioactive cloud was circling the globe releasing nuclear fallout, & when it would be over my region. Coincidentally, I always noticed that right away lots of people would have a "bug" & exhibit flu-like symptoms--which is symptomatic of "mild" radiation poisoning. I did not have those symptoms.

I'll accept any excuse to eat chocolate and I prefer the dark, not sweet varieties. I try to avoid Cadbury's because I agree with Mr Red that it is just chocolate flavoured sugar.   There is a brand of dark chocolate here in Oz called Lindt. Yummo! They have one variety with a tangy orange filling. Double yummo!

Okay, I'm testing the chocolate cough remedy right now. I have just eaten a couple of pieces of 85% cocoa Lindt dark chocolate and for the present my annoying persistent cough which I have had for the last couple of days has abated - but for how long? And why?

More observations on this experiment later.

Also, on a documentary tv programme about Belgian chocolate the advice was not to eat/chew fine chocolate in a big hurry but to place a piece on your tongue and let it slowly melt so that you can "savour the flavour".

Well, I think it works. I had a couple of doses and the cough seems to have calmed down a lot. It's almost gone, in fact.

So, maybe I should just eat a daily maintenance dose. :-)
