Tomorrow is my second visit to my endodonsist, Dr. Lenny Chiat. He will remove the balance of the 3 nerves from the tooth and search to see if there is a 4th. Next week will be the 3rd final visit on this tooth when he will fill the canal with rubber. Then I have to go back to my regular dentist to restore the tooth. That involves either a post & filling or a crown. So far no pain except in the wallet.

I sympathise from both sides... but at least we don't have to keep wandering about from clinic to clinic here in the UK, don't get many specialist dentists around.

You should have asked JimmyT - he does special rates for Mudcatters... doubles it usually !

We don't want to alarm you, Rabbi, but Bev had three, that's right, three root canals on a single tooth. The last was less than one year ago   and we are hoping the problem is finally resolved. You think your wallet hurts!

I've had no problems with the root canals that I've had... the only problem was in not having the money and putting off the root canals (and every other piece of dental work needed) for several years! I still need one more root canal and a ton of cavities filled so that I don't need even more root canals in a couple of years.

It occurs to me that a set of dentures would be less painful and cheaper in the long run for those of us with bad teeth. What do those with experience of them think?

Let me give you a bit of advice...whatever you can do within your power to not get dentures, do it. They are a substitute for teeth about like a prosthetic leg is for a real one.   You lose the sense of temperature in food, you lose 75% of your biting force and that is a best case scenario. Now just as soon as I say this someone will come along and say they are great and give them absolutely no porblem. These folks are the exception and not the rule. If I never did another set of dentures it would be entirely too soon.

I am back from session #2 and am glad to report that all went well. No pain at all after the novocaine wore off. Next Monday we fill the canal with rubber. The following Monday, we clean out a cavity in the #2 tooth. (He is presently doing the #3 tooth.) If it extends into the pulp we begin root canal on that one as well. Afterwards its back to me regular dentist for the restoration. If the cavity in the #2 tooth has not extended into the pulp he will put in a temporary filling with a sedative lining and then have my regular dentist do the permanent filling. Either way, the money goes quickly.

I had to take my Daddy into the VA hospital today to have the broken parts & roots of 11 teeth extracted. They told him that if he feels any pain he should take over the counter tylenol. I know he's hurting.
When I went in for a root canal not too long ago, I tried to help the driller aka dentist understand that my system is resistant to meds & therefore I require much more than the average person. The anesthetic wore off half way through the job. He then gave me so much more that it was not supposed to wear off for 8-9 hours. It wore off in 2 1/2. When he finished, he sat at his desk to write me a RX for pain meds & said, "So, what can you take? Percoset? Does that do anything for you at all?"

Kaleea, I am not sure I follow you exactly. MAny patients are resistant to anesthetic and it it not unusual to have to add additional quantities of anesthetic. Did your dentist give you percocet? If he did, I am sure he thought you were in sufficient pain to warrant such strong analgesics.

As far as your father, it is not unususal for dentists to recommend taking over the counter pain meds prior to having a history taken with the patient and establish a relationship, also avoiding drug seeking people who keep root tips in their mouth as a means of acquiring narcotics. SOme dentists especially military or ones in institutions like the VA have a standard criteria of what they can and cannot do. It is always a red flag when any patient says they are resistant to pain meds. etc as this is one of the most common techniques of drug seeking people. I am not suggesting this is the case at all with you, but merely pointing out that this is the rationale for some dentist's decisions.
