Canadian researchers found a pandemic strain of flu that the USA has sent to 18 countries in 3700 - 5000* seperate viral testing lab kits.

The N2H2 1956 virus killed 4 million in 1956 and faded out by 1968.
Anyone born after 1968 is at extreme risk.

Although we are not out of the woods yet, I thank the ever vigilant Canadian scientists for thus far thwarting the 3 Stooges like bio war terrorists of the United States.

No need to suspect conspiracy theories here when simple ignorance and lack of caring will explain the situation effectively.

from the articles it was primarily requested that it be destroyed because of the possibility of it's being stolen and mis-used (by terrorists) - Rather then the risk of the technicians mishandling it during testing procedures.

Technicians in the laboratories would be expecting to be handling non infectious or dead viri. It was remarkable that Canadian scientists went so far as to tediously identify the virus given them when there were no protocols to do so.

The Diane Reems show on NPR today went into detail regarding this situation with 2 guests. One doctor on the show wrote a book 'Beasts of the World' which dealt with animal transmission of "new" emerging infectious diseases especially from pets.

Cats were riskier than dogs due to toxoplasmosis and rabbits turned out to be the safest pets of all. Anomal born diseases are not a one way street for it seems people have given diseases such as polio etc. to their pets.

Near the end of the show a most interesting prediction was made regarding the possible discovery of certain cancers, diseases and even shizophrenia to infectious agents in the near future.

Donuel, according to a recent CBC radio report, the Federal Canadian Lab in Winnipeg tested it after they had been sent a sample of a virus from a patient in BC who had a similar H2N2 virus, that they were unable to identify here in BC. Which makes me wonder, how did the person in BC contact the virus and was it an identical strain?

Interesting discover Metchosin. I don't know. I only learned of this story 24 hours ago.

Still it would explain why the virus was scrupulously identified beyond the normal procedures.

I belive it is easier for a virus to escape captivity than Africanized bees.

What is also a puzzle is that I believe Bird flu is also a type A H2N2 virus, but I haven't heard about any cases in BC. So I still wonder what the patient in BC had and if they are OK.

Metchosin, The CBC broadcast you heard regarding the BC man with a H2N2 type flu is most telling. Here in the states the Today show guest from the Center for Disease Control skirted the issue by only saying that it was due to unusual circumstances that the Canadians uncovered the 1956 flu varient.

BTW in this years proposed US budget, the Center for Disease Control is taking a huge cut.

It is now being reported on the CBC that the virus from the kit was identified, because or an error by a BC lab worker, who contaminated a culture from a patient who had cancer, not influenza.

I heard, that the test kit virus sample was on the laminar flow bench where the technician was doing work with the BC patient's sample and the lab had initally ruled out contamination of the sample from the BC lab, because they didn't have a source of H2N2 virus, or so they thought.

Interesting that one of the countries where the virus was sent was Saudi Arabia.
