Subject: Lyr Add: THE GREAT AMERICAN BUM
From: beardedbruce
Date: 05 Aug 05 - 07:08 PM

Come all you jolly jokers if you want to have some fun
And listen while I relate the tale of the great American bum.
From the east and west and north and south like a swarm of bees they come.
They sleep in the dirt and they wear a shirt that's dirty and full of crumbs.

(chorus)
I am a bum, a jolly old bum And I live like a royal Turk.
And I have good luck and I bum all my chuck And the heck with the man that works.

It's early in the morning when the dew is on the ground,
A bum arises from his nest and gazes all around.
While going east they're loaded, and going west sealed tight,
"I reckon we'll have to ride aboard the fast express tonight."

(chorus)

Well, I met a man the other day that I never met before,
And he asked me if I wanted a job a-shovelin' iron ore.
I asked him what the wages was and he said: "ten cents a ton."
I said: "Old fellow, scratch your …neck, I'd rather be on the bum.

(chorus)

Oh, lady would you be kind enough to give me somethin' to eat,
A piece of bread and butter and a tender slice of meat.
Some apple pie and custard just to tickle me appetite,
For really I'm so hungry, don't know where I'll sleep tonight.

(chorus)

SPOKEN: You've heard of Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling and the rest.
You've all seen Greta Garbo and her bosom friend, Mae West;
But there's a little lady I want you all to meet.
She's working on munitions and she lives just down the street.

She can't pretend to be a great celebrity,
But still, she's most important in her way.
The job she has to do may not seem like much to you,
But all the same, I'm very proud to say:

SUNG: She's the girl that makes the thing
That drills the hole that holds the spring
That drives the rod that turns the knob
That works the thing-ummy-bob.
She's the girl that makes the thing
That holds the oil that oils the ring
That takes the shank that moves the crank
That works the thing-ummy-bob.

It's a ticklish sort of job
Making a thing for a thing-ummy-bob,
Especially when you don't know what it's for;
But it's the girl that makes the thing
That drills the hole that holds the spring
That works the thing-ummy-bob that makes the engines roar;
And it's the girl that makes the thing
That holds the oil that oils the ring
That works the thing-ummy-bob that's going to win the war.

SPOKEN: She's not what you would call a heroine at all.
I don't suppose you'll even know her name;
And though she'll never boast of her important post,
She strikes a blow for Britain just the same.

(REPEAT THE SUNG PORTION ABOVE.)

I thank you.

Out in the land of San Domingo,
Lived a girl named "Oh By Jingo"

YA.YA..YATA YATA YA..YA..Boom-chika-boom chika boom chika boom.
From the hills and from the Marshes, came the little, "Oh By Goshes"
Ya...ya...yata yata ya ya ..Boom-chika-boom chika boom chika boom.
They all spoke with a certain "Lingo"
And they all loved "Oh by Jingo"
And every night, they sang in the pale moonlight,

(chorus
"Oh by Jingo, Oh by Gosh , by Gee"
Buzz around, Buzz around, keep a-Buzzin' round,
Oh By Jingo, Gee what you do to me.
We can build a little hut
You will be my favorite nut
Well have a lot o' little "Oh By Gollies" and we'll put them in the "Follies"
Oh,By Jingo, Oh by Gosh, By Jove
Oh By Jingo, Gee won't you be my love?"
Then they all ran around singin', "Oh by Jingo"
"Gee by Gosh, by Jimminee Ringo"
"Oh by Jingo, Gee you're the one for me."

CHOC-CHOC-CHOCOLATE!

If I had my druthers,
I'd druther have my druthers
Than anything else I know
While you'd druther hustle
accumulatin' muscle
I'd druther watch daisies grow.

While they're growin' slow
'n the summer breeze is blowin'
My heart is overflowin' 'n so;
If I had my druthers
I'd druther have my druthers
than anything else I know.

If I had my druthers,
I'd druther have my druthers
Than work any wheres at all
It ain't that I hates it,
I often contemplates it
while watchin' the rain drops fall

I sits there for hours,
developin' my powers
a figurin' how flowers gets tall
If I had my druthers
I'd druther have my druthers
than anything else at all.

How can you tell when a guinea pig is pleased
When he hasn't got a tail to wag?
All other animals you will find
Have got a little tail stuck on behind.
If they'd only put a tail on a guinea pig,
And finished off a decent job,
The price of the animal would then go up
From a guinea up to 30 bob!

The night was mighty dark
So you could hardly see
For the moon refused to shine.
Couple sittin' underneath a willow tree
For love they pine.
Little maid is kinds 'fraid of darkness
So she says "I guess I'll go"
Boy begins to sigh,
Looks up at the sky
To tell the moon his little tale of woe
Oh
Shine on shine on harvest moon
Up in the sky
I ain't had no lovin' since
January, February, June or July
Snow time ain't no time to stay around and spoon
So shine on shine on harvest moon
For me and my gal.

Nothing for me thanks. I am still recovering from last weekend.

Well you've heard the story of the hot-rod race that fatal day,
when the Ford and the Mercury went out to play.
This is the inside story I'm here to say,
I was the kid that was a-drivin' that Model-A.

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up,
and that Model-A body makes it look like a pup.
It's got twelve cylinders, and uses them all,
with an overdrive that just won't stall.
It's got a four-barrel carb and dual exhaust,
4-11 gears, she can really get lost.
Got safety tubes and I'm not scared,
the brakes are good and the tires are fair.

We left San Pedro late one night,
the moon and the stars were shining bright,
everything went fine up the Grapevine hill,
we was passin' cars like they was standin' still.
Then all of a sudden, like a flick of an eye,
a Cadillac sedan had passed us by.
The remark was made "there's the car for me,"
but by then the taillights were all you could see.

Well the fellers ribbed me for bein' behind,
so I started to make that Lincoln unwind.
I took my foot off the gas and man alive,
I shoved it down into overdrive.
Well I wound it up to a hundred and ten,
twisted the speedometer cable off the end.
I had my foot keyed clear to the floor,
said "that's all there is, there ain't no more."

I went around a corner and I passed a truck,
I whispered a prayer, just for luck.
The fenders was clickin' a guardrail post
the guys beside me were white as a ghost.
I guess they'd thought I'd lost my sense,
the telephone poles looked like a picket fence.
They said "slow down, I see spots,"
the lines on the road just looked like dots.
Smoke was rollin' outta the back,
when I started to gain on that Cadillac.

I knew I could catch him, and hoped I could pass,
But when I did, I'd be short on gas.
We went around a corner with the tires on the side,
you could feel the tension, man what a ride!
I said "hold on, I got a license to fly,"
and the Cadillac pulled over and let me go by.

Then all of a-sudden, the rods started knockin',
when down in the dip, she started a-rockin'.
I looked in my mirror 'n' red lights was blinkin'.
The cops was after my hot rod Lincoln.

Well, they arrested me, and put me in jail.
I called my pop to go my bail.
He said "son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin'
if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln."

Sonnet 07/11/02                        DCCLXV
(33 of 257 to my current muse...)

To each day comes a night, when stars appear,
In promenade across the sky. I see
Those fixed forms, and dream that I might free
Just one, to offer muse: A beacon, near
To hope's harbor, that heart might use to steer
Desires. Thoughts wander without course, to be
Tossed upon page. How can I ask that she
Be what I seek, when I still heart-wreck fear?

To each night comes a dawn, when sun returns,
With harsh illumination. Is the sight
More real than night's desires? This soul now spurns
Cold fact: I would for dreams of passion fight.
In muse I find my focus: My heart learns
Of sun and stars, Love is the greater light.

There's a time I al -ways feel hap -py, As hap -py as a king.

Chorus:
When the red, red, rob -in comes bob, bob, bob -bin' a -long, a -long,
There'll be no more sob -bin' When he starts throb -bin' his old sweet song,
Wake up, wake up you sleep -y head, Get up, get up, get out of bed,
cheer up, cheer up, the sun is red, Live, Love, laugh and be hap -py,
What if I've been blue now I'm walk -in' through fields of flow'rs,
Rain may glis -ten but still I lis -ten for hours and hours,
I'm just a kid a -gain do -in' what I did a -gain sing -ing a song
When the red, red, rob -in comes bob, bob, bob -bin' a -long.

Gee... I never did write it down as I was taught... so, why not? Here it is, as best as I remember it...

A's for the axes that youse all own;
And B's for boys that can use em also;
C's for the chopping which now begins;
And D's for the danger that we do stand in.

And how merry are we;
No mortal on earth, are as happy are we.
Derry hi, derry doe, derry higheee, derry dum,
Give the Shanty by's whiskey, there's work ta be done.

E's is the echo that rings through the woods
And F's for the foreman that booses our job;
G's for the grindstone we grinds our axe on;
And H'ach for the handle so smooth wore around.

And how merry are we;
No mortal on earth, are as happy are we.
Derry hi, derry doe, derry higheee, derry dum,
Give the Shanty by's whiskey, there's nothin goes wrong.

I's for the Iron that marks out our pines;
And J's for the Jovial that's always in time;
K's for keen edges we all have to keep;
And L's for the lice that o'er us do creep.

And how merry are we;
No mortal on earth, are as happy are we.
Derry hi, derry doe, derry higheee, derry dum,
Give the Shanty by's whiskey, the bosses are gone.

M's for the moss we stogs in our camp;
And N's for the needle as we sew our pants;
O's for the owl that screeches by night;
And P's for the tall pine that always we do slay right.

And how merry are we;
No mortal on earth, are as happy are we.
Derry hi, derry doe, derry higheee, derry dum,
Give the Shanty by's whiskey, our work is soon done.

Q's for the quarrelling that we don't allow;
And R's for the river where we float our boughs;
S is for the sleds so stout and so strong;
And T's for the big teams that hauls em along.

And how merry are we;
No mortal on earth, are as happy are we.
Derry hi, derry doe, derry higheee, derry dum,
Give the Shanty by's whiskey, and pay them or dun.

U's for the uses we put ourselves to;
And V's for the valley we drives our logs through;
W's for the woods we leave in the spring
And now I have sung all I'm going to sing.

And how merry are we;
No mortal on earth, are as happy are we.
Derry hi, derry doe, derry higheee, derry dum,
Give the Shanty by's whiskey, our work here is done.

I'll have another pint and listen to the singing. Hot sun, good beer and plenty of song. Why bother to tune the guitar?

THE LUMBERMAN'S ALPHABET

A is for axes that you may all know;
And B is for boys that make them all go;
C is for choppers so early begun
And D is for danger we often stand in.

CHORUS :

'Tis merry, 'tis merry, 'tis merry are we
No mortal on earth, so happy as we.
A derry, Lo derry, Ring derry dum.
Give us shantymen's grog and there'll nothing go wrong.

E is the echo that through the woods rang:
F is the foreman, head one of our gang;
G is the grindstone so merrily goes round
And H js the handle, so smoothly 'tis worn.

I is the Iron that mark-ed the pine;
J is the Jov-al that's never behind;
K is the keen edge our axes we keep
And L is the lice that over us creep.

M is the moss we patch-ed the cracks
And N is the needle we patch-ed our pants;
O is the owl that hooteth at night
And P is the pine that always falls right.

Q is the quarrel we never allow;
R is the river we float our logs down
S is the sleds so stout and so strong
And T is the teams that go jog 'em along.

U is the use we put our teams to;
V is the valley we draw our logs through;
W is the woods we leave in the spring
And this is all I am going to sing.

Now, this ain't the version I leaned from Da, who worked in a camp in the thirties, but it's close. Derry hiiii, derry doooe, derry higheee, derry dum, give the shanty by's whiskey, there's work ta be donnne.

See the lookout in the crows nest
Flat on his back
The cook's down in the galley
Drinking rum extract
Swinging in the rigging is the brilliant engineer
He's converted every piston head
To pumping Aussie beer

We've got a pie-eyed aboriginy
Playing on his didgeree
Do you hear the captain
Whistling the blues?
A banjo pickin' bos'un
And a crew that hates the ocean
On the Sydney Harbour Ferry Boat
Loaded up with booze!

Please make mine Sahkeapeare Stout. . .
thanks ever so . . .

1. I'm dreaming dreams.
I'm scheming schemes.
I'm building castles high.
They're born anew.
Their days are few,
Just like a sweet butterfly;
And as the daylight is dawning,
They come again in the morning.

CHORUS: I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.
They fly so high,
Nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams they fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding.
I've looked ev'rywhere.
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.

2. When shadows creep,
When I'm asleep,
To lands of hope I stray;
Then at daybreak,
When I awake,
My bluebird flutters away.
Happiness, you seem so near me!
Happiness, come forth and cheer me!

CHORUS

Then when the hour grows late; I love to hes -i -tate__
The mo -ments seem so fleet -ing, While I am here re -peat -ing.

Stars shin -ing bright a -bove you, Night breez -es seem to whis -per, "I

Sweet dreams till sun -beams find you, Sweet dreams that leave all wor -ries

But in your dreams what -ev -er they be, Dream a lit -tle dream of me.

I have got a sweet -ie known as Su -sie
In the words of Shake -speare she's a "wow"
Though all of you
May know her too
I'd like to shout right now:

Chorus:
If you knew Su -sie like I know Su -sie
Oh! Oh! Oh! what a girl!
There's none so clas -sy as this fair las -sie
Oh! Oh! Ho -ly Mos -es! what a chas -sis!
We went ri -ding She did -n't balk
Back from You -kers I'm the one that had to walk!
If you knew Su -sie like I know Su -sie
Oh! Oh! what a girl.

Susie has a perfect reputation.
No one ever saw her on a spree.
Nobody knows where Susie goes.
Nobody knows but me.

If you knew Susie like I know Susie,
Oh! Oh! Oh! What a girl!
She wears long tresses
And nice tight dresses.
Oh! Oh! What a future she possesses!
[Out in public, how she can yawn!
In a parlor, you would think the war was on.]*
If you knew Susie like I know Susie,
Oh! Oh! What a girl!

Come sing a song with me
Come sing a song with me
Come sing a song with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:
        And I'll bring you hope
        When hope is hard to find
        And I'll bring you a song of love
        And a rose in the winter time.

Come walk in rain with me
Come walk in rain with me
Come walk in rain with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Come dream a dream with me
Come dream a dream with me
Come dream a dream with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Come share a rose with me
Come share a rose with me
Come share a rose with me
That I might know your mind.

MMario,

the rest of the words...

I'll never forget
the people I met
Braving those angry skies
I remember well
as the shadows fell
The light of hope in their eyes
And though I'm far way,
I still can hear them say,
"Thumbs Up, 'Cause when the dawn comes up

(chorus)
There'll be bluebirds over
The White cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow, just you wait and see
There'll be love and laughter
and peace ever after
Tomorrow when the world is free.

The Shepherd will tend his sheep
The valley will bloom again
And Jimmy will go to sleep
In his own little room again

There'll be bluebirds over
the White cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow just you wait and see.
