Yeah, what Peace said. "A guitar" is way too general.

How wide is the neck/fingerboard? What kind of strings--metal or nylon? 6 or 12 strings? Flat or radiused fingerboard? And I expect others could come up with a lot more relevant questions.

This topic has been beaten to death, so why make something out of it that it is not.

In the past, for steel string guitars of which Gibson and Martin along with also ran wannabe Taylor reign supreme in the Pro world, Kyser Quick Change cpas has been the most popular. Not all like them as best, but not all make good decisions in life no matter what the choice is.

There are undboubtably some who will tell you to make your own or that a rubber band can be made to work just as well and does not make some corporation richer.

I find the Shubb capo does a good job and does not drag the strings to one side and pull the instrument out of tune. I use Shubbs on a steel-strung guitar with a radiused fretboard, a nylon-strung guitar with a flat fretboard, and an octave mandolin.

You do need to wear something with pockets, however, as you cannot park the Shubb on the headstock of your instrument.

Much as I hate to admit it, GUEST, Martin Gibson is right -- we have beaten this topic to death. Why not do a forum search for "capo" and see what turns up?

Must admit I have started trying to work out how to do MY accompaniments without using a Capo these days ! The greater the string length the better the resonance of the instrument !

Leadfingers, Some of what you say is true, but I will never sacrifice a better key to play in for "string length." Give me a capo for playing and singing in keys like F,Ab, or B anytime. If it works better for my vocal range for a particular song, clamp that Kyser on right now.

Shubb, in my opinion. But it's a matter of taste, isn't it? Kyser are fine, but I get better results with the Shubb, because it does not tend to throw the 6th string sharp if you set the tension right (not too tight).

Kyser or Shubb will do just fine. Shubb makes a design specifically to fit radiused(curved) fingerboards. Not sure about Kyser.

Dunlop makes a couple of different models. Never did like them and was elated when the Shubb came out. Personally, I use a Kyser for guitar as it's a little easier to move around the neck. Keep a couple of extra Shubbs in my pick box as back-ups and loaners.

For mandolin I've got a Shubb banjo capo in case someone throws an Ab, Bb or Eb at me. I know it's a mandolin sin, but this is the Mudcat, not Mandolincafe and it's perfectly legal within the 'folk process'. :-)

I always used to use Dunlops , until I discovered Shubb ! I still carry Shubbs and DO still use them for 'Silly' Chord runs , but find I can get away without for three / four chord trick stuff in most keys , and will NOT use a capo on a mandolin at all !!

Another vote for the Shubb. They're compact, easy to use, and they do the job. You can get them either curved for radiused fingerboards or flat for classics and other flat fingerboards.

Didn't we just sing this song?

On steel stringers my vote is still Victor/Dunlop then Shubb, Kyser way third. I have no clue regards to classicals.

In a jam session I play with frequestnly last Friday night, I did happen to notice that out of six guitars that were in the group I was involved with, all with excellent and experienced muscians, 5 including myself used Kysers and one was using a Shubb.

Victor and Bird of Paradise.

I find Kysers put the tuning out. Paige and Shubb are also not bad.

I stand by my 6- & 12- string Shubbs.
They've given me inspiration in my times of need...

I've tried all kinds of capos and finally settled on the Shubb. The problem with the Kyser is that the spring is quite strong, and unless you have a left hand that you can crush rocks with, the strength of the spring tends to defeat the "quick change" aspect of the capo. Also, I found that it mashed the strings down so tight that it tends to make them go sharp. Aesthetically, it looks like you've grafted a rocking chair to the neck of your guitar. But some folks think that looks sexy.

The Shubb is not "quick change," but it's small and unobtrusive, and you can easily adjust the amount of pressure you want on the strings.

Charmion, I've been keeping my Shubb capo on the headstock of my Martin for years -- requires only a quick turn of the screw. I would have lost it years ago if not for that!

I agree with Don about the relative merits of Kyser and Shubb.

Shubb, Kyser, Dunlop, G7. Pick one, it'll work. If you don't like it, get something else - they're not too expensive. Just don't get a strap-type one.

Graham.

As I've stated here before... Kyser for stage, Shubb for studio.

And no matter which one I use, I will have to fine tune my B string and low E string if I'm fussy about it being bang-on perfectly in tune. That's not usually the case on stage though; I can pull that Kyser on and off without touching things up.

The reason I don't use the Shubb on stage is because the Kyser is more convenient and won't go missing as easily, nor lose any little rubber parts that unscrew and disappear.

I'll chime in on the Victor list . I always used Shubbs till this victor came along .. Anything that you can keep from twisting the strings out of tune is the trick .. I used a (was it Hamilton?? ) capo in the 60's and 70's made by the company that made a spring loaded ones but the one I loved that was cheaper had a clamp on and then screw tytend from the back . Very acurate . All the best , Guy

I have a Bjarton BJ12E 12-string with a huge neck, and foung that Shubbs and G7s simply would not open wide enough to go on the neck properly (in the case of the Shubb the clamp was so wide open that the mechanism did not work properly) and also they only got 10 of the 12 strings. The situation with Kyser quick-change was similar.

This was solved by getting a Kyser Pro-Am, which just went round the neck, and has a very very long top arm. It has another virtues like the screw mechanism can be accurately adjusted so the clamp is not too tight - in fact I grip it with one hand to get the tension on the strings right and then simply screw up the screw to hold it there.

THe BJ12E string spacing also is not a lot wider at the saddle than the nut, so the Fielding trick of grooving the rubber on the capo to avoid pulling the fatter strings of each pair too tight works well as far up the neck as the capo will go and still leave the guitar playable (it's an old fashioned short neck 12 frets to the body).

Now a friend of mine has just had his old 12-string rebuilt at Graham's (underneath Andy's in Denmark Street, London) and very nice it sounds too, a particularly sweet treble. But the neck is very deep, and none of my capos or his capos will go round the neck at all. A pro-am has a long enough top arm to cover the strings but the jaws will not open enough to go on the neck. It also has a considerably wider string spacing at the saddle than the nut which is going to make grooving the rubbers something that will limit each modified capo to about a 2-fret working range before the grooves fail to line up with the required strings.

Never mind the subtleties.

What capo is HUGE and will go round the guitar neck?

Hmm. The Victor looks pretty good. The thing I like about the Shubb is that it works, it's simple to use, and it's unobtrusive. The Victor seems to have the same qualities. Might just give on a try sometime.
