I am not a frenzied Xmas shopper by any means and do not expect half the stuff I buy to even work, but this year I noticed that there is little or no relationship between a store and its merchandise. For example:
I went to Crate and Barrel and they had neither. I tried Pier 1 and alas there were no piers. I went to Safeway and slipped in the produce aisle and wrenched my back so I hobbled over to Super Fresh where I saw desiccated and moldy strawberries. I limped into the Hearth and Plow and aside from a few fireplace tools they were out of hearths and plows. I tried the Healthy Back store and they too were out. I pulled into a Dodge dealership and was promptly rear ended. I didn't even have a chance to dodge. After we exchanged information the irate salesman who hit me said he knew where I lived and would deal with me later, so I went to Macy's and found out they didn't sell Mace. It was as if I was now on a mission of desperation so against my better judgment, I thought I might check out Walmart. As I expected they had walls but none for sale.

I've heard that nothing is as it seems but today it really hit home.
Just then, my faith was restored when I spotted half a dozen Gun and Liquor stores over on Martin Luther King Blvd.

About the only things that Canadian Tire doesn't sell are liquor, smokes and, of course, Canadian tires.

Other planned short stories;

A man becomes so pre occupied with a seeming ability to foresee the futire his wife forces him to the doctor. Although no attention is paid to the fact that all his paranoid predictions come ture he is put on prozak and other medications.
He stops taking them since it could what he considers to be his "abilities".
While boarding a plane for the holidays he gets a powerful prediction that his life is in danger so he hurries off the plane with his wife calling after him when he is suddenly shot dead by fearful air marshalls.

Here's my sad sad story. Need a new pair of winter boots, wanted to buy Canadian. Spent several hours, over a period of several days, scouring the footwear depts of traditionally Canadian retailers - Sears, The Hudson Bay Co., Zellers, even Canadian Tire. ANd gave up in disgust.

Could I find even ONE pair of reasonably priced, half decent-looking, comfortable, waterproof, warm'n cuddly CANADIAN snow boots, in Canadian stores, at the beginning of winter?   

Nope. There's no such thing as Great Canadian boots anymore, I guess! Everything here is made in China. Or Taiwan. Or Korea. For instance, here in Barrie, The Bay offers at least 60 styles of ladies winter boots. About 4 of those are Made in Canada. And the Cdn choices are uncomfortable (at least on my feet!), twice the price, and twice as ugly as the Chinese models.

Oh well, if I get a new pair of laces and spray 'em down good with waterproofing, the pair I have might last another season before they fall apart. Got'em at Zellers, 9 years ago. Made in Canada. They are quite the relic now, I guess.

Tried to shop Canadian for Christmas this year, too. I've given up on that as well. For just one example - everything in the "Roots" outlets - you know, the store where every item is adorned with a HUGE red maple leaf or two - is made in China or Vietnam. Same for "Northern Reflections" and "Soft Moc". Even good ole "Canadian" art calendars, featuring scenes of the Alberta Rockies or Ottawa or artwork from the Group of Seven - all are made in the US, printed in Taiwan.

I don't understand why I let this bug me so much. Maybe I'm just a dinosaur for still wanting to buy Canadian? It's a lifelong habit I'll have to get over, painfully or otherwise. I'm working on it.

So, want to "give Canadian" for Christmas? Best stay away from retailers altogether, and create your own gifts then. Thanks for a chance to vent,

I went to Sears, but none of the salesmen could tell me my future.

I was feeling a bit hungry when I left, so I went over to Taco Bell, but they had no bells made of tacos. Not even a bell in the shape of a taco, nor a taco in the shape of a bell.

Then I tried Long John Silver. No long johns, and no silver either. Silver the horse wasn't even there.

So I drove to Ruby Tuesday. Even though it was on a Tuesday, they wouldn't even show me a ruby, much less sell me one.

So I stopped by a coffeehouse, but the house wasn't made of coffee.

In desperation, I went to Papa John's Pizza. Miraculously, they had pizza there! But they wouldn't let me buy a slice; they said it all belonged to Papa John.

the Oz souvenir shops are empty of Oz made souvenirs, however a cute little fluffy lamb had a hang tag with a map of Oz. Australia was the right shape & standing correctly, but Tasmania was rotated 90degrees, so I knew this was yet another import.

gentlemen, Tasmania is only on a different timezone for one month of the year cos they start Daylight Savings a month ahead of the rest of us on the East Coast.

The sooner we get that wall built to keep out those wetbacks and their time zones, the better.

In my business, I start early and go home late to make up for it, so daylight ravng time is irrelevant.

Heck... I went into Barnes and Nobles for a little bit of Olde England, and all they had was a bunch of new books...

Home Depot was truly dissappointing... just a bunch of spare parts and tools to piece 'em together with...

I went down to the post office... you know... 'cause good fences make good neighbors, and mine's falling down... They wouldn't even let me into the office.

...and By the time I finally made it into Victoria's Secret every one else knew but me...
