Subject: RE: BS: Town in England starting with F? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Jan 06 - 06:10 AM It's spelled Falmouth, being the mouth of the river Fal. However there is Foulness..... or foul mess as it's known. Many of these 'towns' are actually still villages. The difference is usually in the number of pubs. Towns had markets and thus, many more pubs. I used to live in Fordington. It was a ford on the river Frome that was downstream from the bridge at Dorchester. And that's todays' useless information. Subject: RE: BS: Town in England starting with F? From: Mr Red Date: 02 Jan 06 - 12:32 PM FWIW the law allowing Cornwall to hold elections for it's own parliament (called the Stannory) has never been repealed to my knowledge. The only thing that prevents it is the cost - and there are companies down there almost big enough to fund it. Fazeley - home of Sir Robert Peel - he of the eponymous "Bobby" (as in policeman). Well Drayton Bassett actually - but who's argueing? |

Subject: RE: BS: Town in England starting with F? From: Skipjack K8 Date: 03 Jan 06 - 09:34 AM Pedant alert. Peace, it's spelt Fingringhoe, a fine Essex port that still boasts a working ballast wharf where one used to work on a sand barge. Whilst we're on my favourite subject of Essex, there's Frating, Fordham, Finchingfield, Franham, Furneux Pelham, Feering, Fairstead, Fuller Street, Faulkbourne, Felsted, Ford End, Fyfield, Fambridge and if you ignore the precursor, Woodham Ferrers. Sadly, Betty's Foulness doesn't count, as it is an island rather than a village. And saving the best for last, there's Fobbing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Town in England starting with F? From: Splott Man Date: 03 Jan 06 - 11:05 AM Dorking is a town without a town hall. I don't think it's to do with size either, Cranleigh (Britain's biggest village) is a lot bigger than Llanwrtyd Wells (Britain's smallest town). How is your sister's dog now weelittledrummer? Subject: RE: BS: Town in England starting with F? From: Arnie Date: 06 Jan 06 - 10:58 AM Splott Man - Britain's smallest town is in fact Fordwich, nr. Canterbury - I know this 'cos that's what it says on the village hall, which is in fact the town hall. The Fordwich Arms used to host a folk club on a Sunday night.I recall that the landlord was an Irishman who needed little encouragement to knock out a few Irish songs at the end of the evening - good beer as well so it's a shame the club folded. |

Subject: RE: BS: Town in England starting with F? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 09 Jan 06 - 10:52 AM Farnsfield is only Fairly near Mansfield, Muppitz. But it is near Southwell, and not far from Newark. Mansfield was the smallest town in Britain without a railway station (until it got one a few years ago) and Newark - an anagram - is the smallest with two. Southwell is either the only village or the smallest town to boast a full-ranking diocesan cathedral (its parish council has redesignated itself as a town council). |
