Could you have it in Sascat...Sasketc...Manitoba? I've never been to Manitoba.

If you have it in, oh, Alberta or BC I might be able to make it, if you'll let me in.

Canadians are welcome at my place. I'm not prejudiced against Canadians or, as we call them in Pocatello, "folks from Northern Idaho."

May I suggest getting together at the Ormstown Branches and Roots Festival . This is a low key and friendly festival which is organized by Mudcat Beer and is held at the end of July in a small town situated 45 minutes out of Montreal. There is free camping and toilet and shower facilities available. So far four Mudcatters, that I know of, have expressed their intention of attending next July.

Cannot take the time right now-- health, work, commitments.

Plus the Getaway people would hunt me down like a dog if I came up there first-- I haven't been able to be lured there, yet, and they're really out to get me.

An added plus to going to Ormstown is that you would meet and hear Bill Garret and Sue Lothrop. These two are accomplished performers and great folks. It's a win for all concerned. Hell, I might even try and make this one. Hope you can pull it together.

If it's near Montreal...I'm in US but only 3 hours from Montreal, even if I don't speed too badly. Would you let "southerners" in? If we're not out west then?

There were rumors this past year that Bruce Murdoch would be performing. Alas, he wasn't on the list when the artists were announced.

If he's going to be there next summer -- and I suppose if Peace is coming it's a really good sign -- then I'm making the trip from T.O.

Having people over for a Canadian meet is kind of like having people over for a Russian meet. You've only got about a billion or so hectares of land to choose from when agreeing on exactly where it will take place. ;-)

I'd love to go, if I can find a way to get there. It's a very, very long drive, though, and my poor little old car is rusting out (big holes through the floor). A big SUV coming from the West Coast and picking up others along the way, would be nice.

Don't come down this end of the threads much but glad I did. Sure would be nice to have a mudcat rally at our festival. Thanks for suggesting it Bobad.
Maybe I could suggest to the board that a special weekend rate could be made for you mudcatters traveling all the way here to central Canada. Or is it Toronto?

You sure are welcomed Sunsull. If I had room you could stay at my (our) house. I usually have about 15 in-laws and outlaws staying over. I have folks that come in from Saint Thomas and London Ont.
In a very short time I will be able to announce some of the changes we are working on for 2007. I'm excited about them but the almighty dollar may still be the problem. Anyone want to donate around ten grand or suggest some millionaire that wants a tax receipt for a donation?
Let me know.

Beer,
Will we need a passport to go to Quebec? ;)

What are the 2007 dates? How much is the cost of admission to the festival?   Does the free camping include "car camping?" (Could I park my car and sleep in it instead of putting up a tent?)

Thanks,
rags

That depends from where West are you coming from? If it is B.C. then of course you do. But if your coming from state side no problem. The dates are July 27,28 and 29 Admission for the past 4 years has been $10.00 in advance $15 at the gate. Friday no charge as well as Sunday. It has been pass the hat. However, this may change a bit this year. Camping is free to a point. If you need electrical hook up then it is $10.00 a day/night. The grounds has plenty of room for trailers, boats , planes or even pup tents. If you want to park your car on the property and sleep in it no problem. Just turn the motor off.

SINSULL,

Canucks have an idiot just like Bush. As much as we think your President is a horse's ass, we are also aware that you are not him. My take on Canadians is that if asked, and if they dislike Bush's policies, they will say very directly and very politely that they think he's not very bright. But truly there is no way 'we' think of Americans as representative of their politicians. True story comin' atcha.

I live in the most redneck part of Canada. Few places more so than Alberta. A fellow on his way to Alaska--American plates on his car--seems to have fallen asleep at the wheel and hit another vehicle (Alberta plates) killing two people and injuring two others. He was banged up and so were the two survivors in the other vehicle. We got them 'packaged' and off to hospital and dealt with the dead. There was NO talk about him being a Yank and what idiots they all are, etc. In fact, people went out of their way for him so that he could get back on the road to Alaska. The Canadian 'dislike' of the US has to do with its politicians and some of its policies to do with soft-wood lumber, cattle, etc. But that dislike does NOT extend itself to individual American citizens. WE realize that many of you are as pissed off with Washington as are many of us.

Big Mick. Your 9 to 10 hours away. Your also from Red Wing country. "Go Wings Go". Was at to old Olympia 4 times. Back to the topic.
I don't think there is a passport required to come to Canada. I go to N/York state once a month to play at a coffee house and have no problem. And some musicians do the same by coming here with the same results. Then again it just may depend on the border guard. Someone else may be able to answer this better than I.
If this becomes a do as Big Mick suggests than I will begin working on organizing help from this end.
Ragdall I was just kidding of course   Especially if your from Canada. And Sinsull I understand your concern. I assure you this. Every Mudcatter would be welcomed. Maybe this is exactly what is needed to mend a few fences.

I do know there will be a Passport required for Canucks to go to the USA as of January 1, 2007.

"Documents for U.S. Citizens--Bring your passport if you've got one. A passport is the easiest and fastest way to enter Canada and return to the U.S. Note: Under the new Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, as of December 31, 2006, all travelers to and from Canada will be required to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States. Other documents that the U.S. government anticipates will be acceptable for land and border crossings under this new initiative are SENTRI, NEXUS, and FAST program cards (international frequent traveler programs). This means that you will no longer be able to enter Canada using a driver's license and birth certificate.

For the latest information on passports and entry requirements for U.S. citizens, check the Web page of the U.S. State Department at www.travel.state.gov. Naturalized citizens should carry their naturalization certificates. U.S. citizens don't require visas to enter Canada."

Peace, to my knowledge the date for requiring a passport to cross the US border is Jan 1 2008.

"The Departments of Homeland Security and State announced today the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to secure and expedite travel. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all U.S. citizens, Canadians, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Mexico to have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter United States by January 1, 2008."

Canadians going to the U.S. will need passports for air travel as of 2007. Travelers going to the U.S. by car will need them as of 2008.

As far as I know, Canada has not yet announced similar regulations for Americans coming here.

Far as the passport thing goes, I think GWB Inc caved a bit and moved the dates forward a couple of years due to intensive lobbying from border states and provinces who are ALL against this passport requirement, because so much cross-border tourism will be eliminated. (About 25% of Americans and 50% of Canadians hold passports and many wouldn't bother to get one to make a little excursion).

Note: Canada is not in fact imposing such regulations on US citizens, but THE U.S. IS!!!! Read Bobad's post above. The point is, when/if the new plan goes into effect, American citizens will need passports (or possibly a new yet-to-be-finalized "secure ID" document) to RE-ENTER the U.S. from Canada.

Hey, come and stay. We'll make room.

Regarding Americans and passports this is the latest:

U.S. reveals plans for high-tech card pass card

WASHINGTON (CP) - The United States has released plans for a wallet-sized pass card that Americans could use instead of a passport to enter the country.

The card will cost US$10 for children and US$20 for adults, plus a US$25 execution fee.

Radio frequency identification technology to be read by machines at border crossings would link the card to a secure U.S. government database containing biographical data and a photograph, the State Department says.

There would be no personal information on the card itself.

Canada is still waiting to hear what alternatives to passports will be acceptable from Canadians.

Congress has delayed the deadline requiring a passport or another secure ID document at U.S. land crossings until June 2009.

I had no trouble flying into the U.S. with my driver's licence and Canadian citizenship card but...

when I returned to Canada, the gal at the airport was on the computer and asked me when the card expired.

Never, I said.

Well, she needed to enter an expiration date in order to access the next page of the I.D. documentation process. She had to call a supervisor who knew how to bypass the expiration date and they let me through.

Everyone acted like it was normal.

Whoever heard of an expiration date on a citizenship card?

Good thing I'm not drinking or you would all have me in tears. They ( some company I can't even pronounce the name.) came about an hour ago and removed all our clothing . From bet sheets to g-strings. The fellow in charge said that it looks that at least 85% will be a write off. there is some fancy machine now taking out the stink till next Tuesday. Friend of mine coming tomorrow do do an estimate for the insurance to rip and reconstruct the up stairs. Any way, things are starting to move. Yes we are staying in the house. But it is ( how should I put it.)I guess 2 houses in one. The part hit was built in 1860 and the second part probably 1920's. The one built later is where we have set up our sleeping quarters. it has the laundry room a small bathroom my music room and Judy's craft room. This will be home for a while. In the older section the fire was contained in the upper part of the house. The downstairs smells like hell but we can use the kitchen facilities. Again thank you one and all and to those who are sending p.m. I have said enough

I can confirm that the ECMA (East Coast Music Awards)are being televised on CBC on Sunday.

There was a lengthy article in today's Ottawa Citizen mentioning that fact and also describing the music scene in Halifax, from whence the awards will be hosted.

It appears that the music scene is going quite strong in that relatively small (300,000 population) city. Some quotes from the article: "You have a really strong singer-writer movement going on in the city", "Halifax is like a little Greenwich Village", "There are quite a few places where they really believe in the emerging artist"

Good news for the east coast music scene and for music in general.

Beer, having been through a nasty apartment fire (and no tenants insurance, so a total loss), I deeply sympathise. A tip: the place I put salvaged stuff in storage dumped bags of cedar chips over everything, and in a month it took the stink out of clothing, upholstery, books and papers.

I see we never answered your question. We are in New Jersey. It looks like Ormstown is just off the top of the Northway (I87) in NYS, That sounds like a long, but easy trip.

I guess it is about time to rejuvenate this thread. For you folks who have said you are coming I would like to inform you that advance tickets are now on sale. If you would P.M. me with your "Real" name I will make sure that your ticket is waiting for you at the gate entrance. The cost is $10.00 for Saturday and $10.00 for Sunday instead of $15.00 each day if you don't make reservations. Damn cheap to here some great musicians like our very own "Peace".
Don't forget Friday night is "Mudcat Jam" and is free except if you want to throw something in the hat. Time to start planning your trip. Oh!, let me know how many will be in your party.

Beer, not wise. I am probably the most disliked person on Mudcat, so you aren't doing the festival any good by sayin' that, IMO. I realize you gotta do what you gotta do, but I have to do what I have to do, too.

See you in July.

There will always be asshole Bruce. The folks who plan to come are music lovers. Let those who want to be negative be negative. They will never change. We just won't give them the time of day. Were here for a short time but a good time. Those attending are coming to have that good time.

I'm really hoping to make it. Chances are about 90% that I'll be there but I won't know for sure until the last moment. Despite what Peace thinks about who's the most disliked Mudcatter, the Bruve Murdoch concert is the single major drawing card for me.

I don't think Peace is close to being the most disliked Mudcatter. Perhaps he thinks that now that Martin Gibson has left us, he must be the natural heir to the throne. Sorry, Bruce - you've got a long way to go.

So who's coming from south of the border?

adrien,
I'm coming from "north-central" British Columbia, along Highway 16 until Winnipeg. I only know the way as far as Winnipeg. From there I hope to find a route which will allow me to stay north and avoid large cities as much as possible for the rest of the way. I shall be travelling in my 1978 station wagon, most likely alone.

I plan to sleep in the car at rest stops or at provicial campgrounds as this will be a very low budget trip and the fuel cost will eat up most of my resources. I'm looking forward to the "Free camping" (in my car) and hot showers at the festival site.

thanks,

If you mean the banjo-picking singer of the Mountain City Four (back in the early sixties), yes, he is indeed my cousin.

By the way, I've attended the Champlain Valley Fest for more than 20 years straight; it's a week after Ormstown; a bit farther south and you have to cross the border (gasp). But it's a terrific fest; you can swim and listen to music at the same time. For more info:

This is what I look like, if anyone is interested in finding me at either fest....

I'm a little down tonight because I had to cancel the "Youth Stage". Not enough interest. Maybe next year. Hopefully at other festival events this is not the case. That is if you have a "Youth Stage". I picked up the idea from the Festival in Saint John's Newfoundland last year and thought it would be a great idea for here as well. Guess I was wrong.
Friday evening is really shaping up great. I think I'll have to have two area's of music. One in a stage setting and the other in a camp fire setting

Dick G....
Probably not a problem.
But a ukelele will be less obtrusive than a stand-up bass.

...and borders are always a bit randomly weird these days...

(Seriously, the three concerns are...
...are these the tools of your trade/are you coming to work?
...are you trying to avoid duties/sales tax by importing them?
...do they contain bombs?

If no to all three, then no problem. But don't leave them visible, or mention them.)

I've crossed the border with my guitar on many an occasion and it's never been a problem.

If you tell them you're coming across to attend a music festival and you've got instruments, it would help if you had a flyer from the festival showing that you're not one of their advertised performers.

But seriously, a lot of people cross the border every day with musical instruments. If they're for personal use, it's perfectly OK.

What you don't want to do is tell them you're just a tourist or just visiting if your name is on publicity material or websites for the festival.

Beer,

I'm wondering if you or some other person associated with the organizing committee of this festival or some designated person who is fortunate enough to attend this festival have thought about making video clips for posting on YouTube {of course with the prior permission of the artists}???

Or is this not something which is done at these type of concerts?

I've crossed the border with my guitar on many an occasion and it's never been a problem.

I bought a barrel at New Ross Farm in NS. An empty barrel was quite a puzzle for the USA border guard. He asked me if I had any cigarettes that "snap, crackle and pop"! and he spent a bit of time thumping the empty barrel.

I've never had trouble crossing the border with a whole whack of instruments in the car, although once we were asked if we possessed any "narcotics". When we were done falling about laughing, we realized the U.S. officer-type person was quite serious and answered him seriously, at which point he favoured us with his opinions on Canadian wacky-terbacky and waved us through. If we say we're going to a folk festival (that is, if we are) we always say we are not performing for money. Otherwise, we just say we're visiting friends -- also true. Either way, we have always been waved through.

one friend had his car ashtray examined. they took it away for a while, then came back with a test-tube full of liquid and said it tested positive for traces of pot. (he never touches the stuff) they bawled him out, but ended up letting him across anyway (?)

another guy had put his prescription pills in an unmarked bottle. They seized his car, and it took weeks to get it back!

strange border events seem pretty random, and rare. most people just get waved through, "have a nice day", but you never can tell. Maybe the guards just get bored.

Beer, the idea about videotaping some parts of the festival was just a random thought. If it can't be done this year, maybe next year.

I'm not even sure if it's a good idea of not. If acts were videotaped, it seems to me that it's important to have the prior written consent of the artist/s. And I also think that when and how the video tape would be used would also have to be spelled out. So I suppose that means the involvement of some lawyer type people.[??]

As to the second part of your 26 Jun 07 - 11:37 PM post, I'm assuming that statement was for all the readers of this thread.

Regrettably, I'm not able to attend this festival. But I definitely hope that all goes well.

I haven't seen Bruce Murdoch since the sixties; I mainly remember him cursing the audience in coffeehouses if anyone so much as rattled an ashtray while he sang.

One evening I was listening to him at one of those Montreal coffeehouses when an older drunk came in and started muttering loudly as BM sang. He stopped in the middle of a song and said, "Excuse me sir, do you have something to say?"

The drunk replied, "I was sayin', I think that's the most beautiful thing I ever heard..."

Bruce was briefly struck dumb. After a long pause, he said, "Well... ...thank you..." and went back to singing....

I agree that it's a little mean to recall this story, but everyone was cranky on stage in those days, and I just thought it was funny, kind of a sign of those times....

...but my memory is clear, he was singing Rompin Roving Days, and had just come to this line...

"all my life I've been quickly cast aside, tho my handshake never meant less than your own..."

...when he stopped...

...unless there's another Bruce Murdoch?

We have Bobad and his wife coming.
Peace will be performing.
Charmion and Edumond will be here
Dick and Susan as well.
Now we also have Ragdall coming in her 1978? station wagon from B.C. and Emma B flying in from England.
Plus a new edition to Mudcat who will be leaning at the Bar is John Weldon whom once introduced I will buy a double scotch for him.
Other mentions that may still show up or have been great contributors to this thread that I want to say thank you as well are Bee, Azizi, Number #6, ImBou,C.Ham, Mooh, and my Herring Chocker from N.B. Gnu. Hope I haven't forgotten anyone. If there are any mudcatters out there who are saying yes or maybe, please come. It will be memorable. I was there for the day yesterday and had a wonderful time. I didn't get to meet too many Mudcatters, but I ran into several people that I knew on the Montreal coffeehouse scene of decades ago and haven't seen since those days. I got to chat for a moment with Bruce Murdoch but in my enthusiasm forgot to mention I also know him through Mudcat.

There were some excellent performances. Bruce Murdoch was wonderful. His hour on the stage was over much too quickly. His new songs are as great, or greater, than the ones from the 1960's and 70's (although I was really hoping he'd do "Fool Like Me"). He played about half the set by himself and had some fine support from Bob Ryskiewicz on guitar and the superb Chris Crilly on fiddle for the second half. Bruce received a very moving intro from Mike Regenstreif.

Ron Hynes proved himself a masterful performer and as good a singer-songwriter as we have in Canada right now.

Others I really enjoyed included Chris Rawlings, Terry Tufts and the Fat Tuesday Brass Band.

One disappointment was the absence of the Yonder Hill Bluegrass Band who apparently cancelled out at the last minute. I've heard some good reports about them and was looking forward to seeing them.

We just returned from Ormstown and let me say it was a wonderful weekend. I echo what C.Ham had to say about Bruce's set, it went by way too fast and was the highlight of the festival for me and those who gave him a standing ovation, that young man has a bright future.

We met quite a few mudcatters but also missed some who didn't let themselves be known, that's you C.Ham, InOBU, ragdall (who's 1978 station wagon may have let her down).

Thank you Adrien (Beer), your enthusiasm and hard work payed off in producing a festival that will not be soon forgotten.

thanks for the part you all played in what turned out to be a marvelous day for this lapsed mudcatter (who signed up a couple of year's ago through my friendship with the late and lamented/loved Rick Fielding, and then didn't write for two years). I found out about the ormstown fest through a link from promo of another Quebec festival that I'm playing at the end of august. was thrilled to see that my dear friend Bruce would be there--hadn't seen him for decades and missed his music.
so I drove in from toronto to see him (and other musical friends: Chris Rawlings, Terry Tufts, Swift Years, Chris Crilly) and was not disappointed. spent some wonderful time in a beautiful place with beautiful people, and it doesn't get better than that.
and so all the circles intersect. even got to meet Emma B!

Wish I could've. (My constant refrain these days). But I had a gig with my daughter on Saturday morning :) and a bunch more family obligations which are taking up all my time these days (eldercare mostly).

Now then. Ron Hynes = "as good a singer-songwriter as we have in Canada right now."   Now THAT's excessively faint praise. Ron is the master. Right up there with Lightfoot, Tyson and Rogers--at their best, not just "right now".
