Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: nutty Date: 01 Nov 06 - 03:44 PM It might have been just coincidence but our local shops burned down last night. At least it was 4 shops (Fish&Chip shop, Takeaway, Hairdressers and General Dealers) and a Children's Nursery. The police say that there is evidence of a forced entry to the General Dealers which had alcohol and fireworks to feed the flames. The buildings are just a shell - in fact they look as if they have been bombed. Some people were definitely up to mischief but the outcome will affect a lot of people for a long time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 01 Nov 06 - 04:24 PM We moved from Suburbia to our remote and humble cabin in the woods some fifteen years ago, and haven't had any experience with trick-or-treaters since. But this year, we just happened to be in town doing some shopping and stopped by our suburban daughter's house for dinner. I don't know whether it's just her neighborhood or whether trick-or-treating has changed for kids everywhere, but this is what I observed: There were absolutely no kids simply walking the neighborhood. They were all chauffered. Every kid who came to the door had been driven by parents. Kids seem to no longer assume that everybody's going to have goodies. The only houses they stop at are ones that are obviously decorated and advertising "We're participating in Halloween! We have goodies!" When I was a kid we went to every house in the neighborhood unless all the lights were out indicating nobody was home. Times change... |
Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: MAG Date: 01 Nov 06 - 11:51 PM I did my annual scary stories as part of the YMCA's spooktacular carnival thing. In a small separate room, of course. With a big red candle and the lights out. Saw about 85 kids out of 600 there. It's a gas; I wouldn't miss it. Unfortunately we are living in such times that parents are less inclined to let their kids roam unescorted. |
Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: Skivee Date: 02 Nov 06 - 12:33 AM I helped some friends do a big neighborhood party in Kensington, Md. These folks go seriously nuts about their Halloween. Everybody on the street starts planning how they will decorate their houses about 3 months before. They have smoke machines, theatrical effects projectors, big sound systems. They use hundreds of yards of spider webby strands, huge slabs of cardboard to make backdrops. The house I was at had a "dead pirate" theme. I know this will be a great shock to those who know me. They had underwater lights and kelp and fish swimming in the living room window. A frind of mine was standing at the window..."underwater" drinking a beer, in a full length, big eared bunny suit. A small child was talking to one of us Pyrates outside and said,"There's a Bunny in the window...and he's drinking a BEER"! She replied,"That's because he's a baaaaad bunny". They had about 2,000 visitors in three hours. A good time was had by most. |
Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: fogie Date: 02 Nov 06 - 06:15 AM I just dont like the whole scene, an old killjoy I might be ,and I know the kids get a kick out of it, but it doesnt feel right for kids to dress up and go begging, with a slight implicit threat. I never see kids where I live, and suddenly there they are all happy excited voices and expecting sweets, or other goodies. I hadnt got anything suitable to give them, but the first group I gave two apples ,then hardened, and suggested the next group gave me a treat, mind you that was after a couple of beers. I note that there are usually mums hovering in the shadows in case of funny stuff. The next morning I was a bit remorseful ,and glad the front of my house was intact. Sorry I dont like it. We used to do naughty things in Yorkshire on Mischievous night (AKA) but that generally involved knocking on doors and running away. The only begging we did was Penny for the guy, which we did'nt cart round from door to door. Am I a solitary old sourpus or what percentage of people think like me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 02 Nov 06 - 06:31 AM I Liked one idea I head recently, it's an idea of a different kind of treat to give to children... Cook sprouts, let them cool, melt chocolate in a bowl, then emerse the sprouts in the chocolate getting full coverage, then place on plate to dry off and harden. Then put the said - chocolate balls in to a bowl, and supply for the trick or treaters to pick out as and when they knock on the door... evil cackle....... |

Subject: RE: BS: Trick 'r Treat................. From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Nov 06 - 07:36 AM years ago my brother & sister-in-law gave me a birthday card showing an alternative (calorie-wise) to a birthday cake. I can't remember what the front pic & caption were, something about looking for a low-calorie treat, but opening it revealed a Birthday ....... Brussel Sprout with a candle on top. I loved it. sandra |
