Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Nov 06 - 02:27 PM I had a Gig in a Wine Bar once - A Ghostly Apparition drifted through the wall one night and asked the barman for a double Jamesons - Barman said " Sorry mate - its only a Wine Bar , We dont have a licence to serve Spirits !" |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Dave (the ancient mariner) Date: 24 Nov 06 - 02:32 PM Reminds me of the old Royal Navy pipe "Up spirits, stand fast the Holy Ghost" |

Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Cats Date: 25 Nov 06 - 10:41 AM Many years ago Bodmin Folk Club was held in Bodmin Gaol and that really was haunted. I sang 'sheepstealer' there and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up as that was one of the offences people were hanged in the gaol for. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST Date: 25 Nov 06 - 02:33 PM Don't know about folk clubs, but many of our sessions here in Ireland are haunted by fe***** bodhran players - but we've sent for the exorcist! |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Girl Friday Date: 25 Nov 06 - 03:04 PM If you've got any ghosts you don't want send them to Orpington - bums on seats don't have to be solid. All they need is money. There's supposed to be a ghost at the Tudor Barn but we've never seen it. There has been the occasional ghostly wail - oh no, that was someone singing. When Nellie's was at the Cardinal's Error in Tonbridge, it reputedly had a ghost, but again, I never saw or heard it. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: The Sandman Date: 25 Nov 06 - 04:02 PM perhaps, the ghostly bodhran players, should be issued with a penknife. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Ebbie Date: 25 Nov 06 - 05:07 PM Ah ha- another difference between the Brits and the Young'uns! I've never heard of ghost-ridden venues in the US. Give us some more? |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST Date: 25 Nov 06 - 05:35 PM I was once grabbed by the ghoulies in a folk club in Devon. |

Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Georgiansilver Date: 25 Nov 06 - 06:55 PM Cats...interesting about the sheepstealing...one of the four offences you can still be hung for in this country. The law from medieval times has never been repealed. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Linda Kelly Date: 25 Nov 06 - 07:39 PM Nellies -the White Horse Folk Club in Beverley was supposed to be haunted - the club has since moved but the ghost stayed where it was. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST Date: 26 Nov 06 - 05:02 AM "The ghost stayed where it was" - Speaks volumes! |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 26 Nov 06 - 06:59 AM Can't remember where it was exactly, but I played in a club in a centuries-old pub in the west country that was reputedly haunted by the ghost of a man who had been imprisoned in the tap room and murdered. HAD to see it, of course. So I went in - and for a joke, the others locked me in! But nothing happened - no bumps, screams or other unworldly phenomena. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I don't frighten easily so I wasn't contributing any psychological vibe. Great gig, though. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST Date: 26 Nov 06 - 07:04 AM Wasn't Dirty Den was it Bonnie?? |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 26 Nov 06 - 07:09 AM Gosh, I'm not sure. The name isn't familiar, but it was about 20 years ago. Where is Dirty Den? That might jog my brain cell... |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: The Sandman Date: 26 Nov 06 - 08:20 AM apparantly he is some character in a soap ,coronation street [possibly]anyway even if he is in a soap, sounds like, he is an untouchable[unclean]caste. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Girl Friday Date: 28 Nov 06 - 08:08 PM Dirty Den was a character in East Enders. He was suposed to have been bumped off about 15 years ago, but returned from the grave to get the ratings back up. However, he upset the Beeb and got murdered again. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST,Bruce Baillie Date: 29 Nov 06 - 12:06 PM ...there are no haunted houses, only haunted people! |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Paul Burke Date: 29 Nov 06 - 12:12 PM The King's Head in Bonsall is reputedly haunted by several ghosts, but they never turned up to the session before that died too. The current landlady did an experiment which involved taking dogs around the place, as they are supposed to be sensitive to such things, but the spooks must have been out that evening. I suggested she should take a horse upstairs, as they are even more sensitive so they say. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST Date: 29 Nov 06 - 12:43 PM Paul "Muffin the Mule" springs to mind. How did she respond to your suggestion? |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: The Sandman Date: 29 Nov 06 - 01:22 PM or a norfolk dickey. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: The Unicorn Man Date: 29 Nov 06 - 01:22 PM The Cricketers at Redbourn in Herts. Is said to be haunted. A lady who keeps taking things capos or tankards they are returned in a week or two. I will get more info. Meanwhile turn up and ask Jannet or Roy Strapp, who run the club every Thursday. Singers night tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Nov 06 - 03:00 PM I've done a couple of gigs in places supposed to be haunted - one was a pub in Helpstone, supposed to be haunted by John Clare. So they told me. Another was in a pub in one of the Wingfields, Derbyshire - it could be North Wingfield. It and the building opposite is supposed to be haunted by the ghosts of the Pentridge rioters who were inprisoned in the house opposite. I didn't see a ghost. Even the ghosts piss off when I start. I did one gig in Belper in the lounge of the Kings Head and this woman who was a white witch told me she she could see I was haunted by a grey spirit, who hovered over me as I played. Perhaps it was just the Theakstons working its subtle magic. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: The Sandman Date: 29 Nov 06 - 03:49 PM oh yes I remember Redbourne, I had a great gig there,.fortunately you dont need a capo for a concertina, so I didnt have the pleasure of being inconvenienced,or interfered with by this ghost. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Paul Burke Date: 30 Nov 06 - 03:53 AM Nobody's muffed any mules in Bonsall for years, not since Bert's donkeys died. And since the session collapsed, there's no call for a horse. I think the landlady is enough to frighten any ghosts off anyway. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Zany Mouse Date: 30 Nov 06 - 05:48 AM In the 60s the Barnsley Folk Club was housed in the Room At The Top in Barnsley Civic Centre. The Civic Centre was reputed to be haunted. I must admit, in all the many times I went there, the ghost didn't have the guts to appear. Back in those days, though, the club was probably the best attended event in Barnsley and VERY loud, so we probably scared it away. Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: GUEST Date: 30 Nov 06 - 06:35 AM Rhiannon Do ghosts have guts? |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: Zany Mouse Date: 30 Nov 06 - 07:13 AM Hmmmm, good point, Guest. Who are you, by the way? Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: BusyBee Paul Date: 30 Nov 06 - 07:23 AM I worked in the Trinity Arts Centre in Gainsborough and the Gainsborough Folk Club booked a room to celebrate on Millennium Eve.The Arts Centre is in an old church and is said to be haunted. As I was setting up the Bar, a glass flew from the middle of the tray I was carrying and smashed on the floor. None of the other glasses moved. I just said, "OK, you've had your fun" and was very glad when the others turned up!. And to think that we'd all been getting wound up that the computers, fire alarms and other such stuff was going to throw a wobbly at midnight. |
Subject: RE: haunted folk clubs From: The Unicorn Man Date: 30 Nov 06 - 03:59 PM Maybe it was too heavy to lift Captain Birdseye. |
