Has anyone knowledge of a certain cyber-creature, that sometimes goes by the name of Joe Offer. This being used to frequent this establishment but has recently been notable by his absence. He was known to dispense goodwill, help and gentle guidance in a common sense way which I for one am missing very much.

Judging by the only photograph, that I have seen of him, he may be found lurking furtively around the vicinity of lighthouses. Great care should be taken when approaching this individual as when cornered, he may go straight into Englebert Humperdinck impressions or sing the entire contents off 'Rise up singing'.

Be warned, all fields should be checked, as recent communication seems to indicate that he may be found in one, laden with vast amounts of antique sound recording equipment, lying down to ambush passing folk singers.

Any further information about this individual should be posted here, to enable a more complete picture to be made up, which may result in his welcome return to the fold. I suggest this flow of information be kept up until he checks in.

Recently on a local TV station there was a blurry video tape shown of the strange beast called Joe Offer. It seems the beast shambled out of the woods and frightened two ornithologists who were taping bird calls in the local vicinity.

The shy creature, known as Joe Offer, was apparantly singing the Riggs of Barely Under it's breath until it saw the two researchers then hurredly ran back into the forest. They gave chase, but no trace was found of the creature, apart from the distant echoes of A-Rovin we must go that came from deeper in the bosque.

On the Guild guitar thread I recently read:

Subject: RE: Info/Opinios Re: Guild Guitars From: Sandy Paton Date: 05-Mar-99 - 12:01 AM

Sorry, folks. I've been neglecting that little ol' slash mark before the final "a" -- and Joe's off to Washington for a month and won't be around to correct my foolish errors. At least I've discovered what I've been doing wrong. My next try will be better, I promise!

Sandy

Although it is not clearly a reference to Joe Offer, Joe had been bestowed by the great Max the power to "edit" threads after they were posted. Could be the same program.

I am curious to know if he went to Washington state or Washington, D.C.. If he were in DC for a month and I did not get to meet him I would be sorely disappointed.

DC, I b'lieve, and y'all should be getting some opportunity to meet him, as I don't think he can keep away from folk circles. If he was hoping to surprise you, I probably just blew it, but watch for JOE OFFER appearing soon at a neighborhood sing near you.
We'll see if that works, if not, sorry.
Blessings,

I had a strange experience last Saturday night. I posted something to the Mudcat, and managed to make a silly mistake in the html coding. "What to do?" I said to myself. "Gee, I wish Joe Offer was around to fix it." Then I crossed the street to my neighbor's house (actually it's SongBob's house in Silver Spring, Maryland, and it's around the corner), where there was a sing-around in progress. And there, sitting on the far side of the room, was a man named Joe Offer. But since this man with the familiar name had no access to a computer, and wouldn't for weeks, this person with the same name as the computer-fixer was useless to solving my predicament. It was the wrong way for him to be around... (at least, for fixing the coding purposes)...

I can report that the man named Joe Offer has been having a wonderful time integrating himself as an honored guest into the greater-Washington, DC folk community. But it would still be nice if there were someone online to fix our mistakes. Maybe next time I see him, I can kidnap him and set him in front of my computer until he sets everything aright with the Mudcat. On the other hand, he's having a wonderful time in our neighborhood actually MAKING music instead of talking about it.

I think it says a lot about the man who taught me all I know about HMLT and his contribution to The Mudcat, that when I did a Forum Search on Joe Offer, to see when his last contribution was, my machine got as far as 900KB and then with steam coming out of it seized up and died. Which is why I did not notice his post for the 15th March and I issued this APB.

I am glad that he has apparently been sighted and is in good health, but I think we should be a little cautious in making the assumption that it is our Joe Offer. I would suggest that any one who comes in to contact with someone claiming to be him, asks him a question that only our Joe would know the answer to.

I would suggest something like how many contributions did the 'condom' thread contain, or where does Alice learn the words to her songs? What question would you suggest, to prove that he is who he claims to be?

Uh, oh....busted!
I've been trying to keep my presence in DC a secret so I can hunt Mudcats without being caught. I met Charlie Baum, Bill D and Ferrara, Songbob, and a few irregular participants. Hope to meet a few more before I'm done. The singing here in DC is wonderful. The people are darn wonderful, too. I feel a bit out of my league, but the people here are very nice about it when I sing my camp songs. Even crotchety old Bill D sang along lustily when I sang "Don't Fence Me In." I think his bark is worse than his bite.

Hunting Mudcats down there in DC, are you? What's the bounty they give you these days? That area seems to be overrun with 'Cats, oughta be a pretty good payoff.

By the way, I've gat a Fielding here from Toronto right now, but he's loading his car and about to leave for New London, CT, (tonight), and Wash. DC tomorrow (if I remember his schedule correctly). He may have see the note from Blessings Barbara and know to look for you, but he doesn't know I'm writing this. He's borrowing two guitars from me. As a good private eye, you might question him about the ownership of the obviously unfamiliar instruments, just for fun.

Enjoy the program. Wish we could be there, too.

Wait a minute...Fielding is BORROWING two from you? The owner or former owner of every guitar known to man is borrowing two guitars? Laskin's by any chance? There are many times I wish I had enough money to pull off stupid jokes and now is one of them.

Call D.C. venue and get help

Go out and buy the worst piece of junk I could find NOW.

Ship it overnite to D.C.

Have it presented as a gift from 'Paw and Cletus...onstage!!!

Demand a song on it.

He borrowed 2 guitars...I can't believe it!!!

Catspaw:

When a suspicious-looking folkie comes across the border, he's experienced enough to carry as little evidence of his nefarious intentions as he can. Hence, the lad come in with his brand-new old Martin 0-18 and his ingeniously modified autoharp (which you've got to see to believe!). We had obtained an 0-18 Harptone case for him from Mandolin Brothers. He nestled the little beauty in the case and felt she was safe forever. However, it turns out she didn't much like the trip down from Toronto in the trunk (boot?) of his car. Small crack on the face had grown a bit worse. He decided to leave her here with us, borrow my backup Larrivee and the Apollonio 12-string for his current tour, and then get the 0-18 to his favorite repair person before risking her stability on the road again.

Too bad we're unable to co-conspire with some old packing crate of a bridge-cable-strung Stella, or something! That'd be great! But, hey! All those Washington Mudcateers are rich (they work for the gummint, y'know), maybe they can pull something off with their usual outrageous sense of total disrespect. Attention Baum, LaMarca, Bill D, SongBob, et al! Time to be inventive!! Make Roger from Baltimore wish he hadn't made previous plans.

Now I wish we could be there even more than before!

Sandy and Catspaw,

What surprises me is that Sandy would lend two guitars to Rick who professes to having had 2,332 guitars stolen from him.

When I heard Joe O. might show at Rick's gig it was just too much for me. I gave my tickets away to a needy folkie, made deep apologies to my friends, and told Marge we were headed to DC on Saturday evening..

Sure, I lent 'em to him. Ya gotta have faith! Caroline and I were once hitch-hiking from San Diego to New York (1957) and were picked up by a fellow who told us about having picked up a couple some years before. Stopped at a gas station, and when she went to the Ladies, the guy hit our friend in the head and took off with the car. I said, "And you just picked up another couple?" He said, "Sure. I figure it would only happen once in a million times, and it's already happened to me!" Well, I figure Rick's already had enough guitars stolen from him to tilt the odds in my favor. ('Course, I'll pray a lot till they get back home.)

I'm really glad you decided to head down to Rick's gig in Washington. Wear your Mudcat t-shirt! He and I had talked today about you not being there because of previous plans. He'll be as surprised to see you as he will be when Joe O. introduces himself. Have a great time, everyone! I'm plumb jealous.

Well damn...now this whole thing is really getting me. Up until yesterday AM, Karen and I had planned to park the kids and drive to DC late Friday. Then a crisis with her grandmother and assorted family infighting...long story, not the time or place...forced us to throw in the towel. We were really looking forward to it as a lot of fun...DC catters, surprise at us showing from Ohio would have surprised Joe and Roger too...damn,what a kick. Sit anonymously for a while and ask questions like, "What's Mudcat?" and "Do you know this Fielding guy?" And we could have taken that packing crate you describe along, already signed by 'Paw and Cletus!!! Here Rick, for you to replace Pedro the implosive. I can't think of a way that'd be more fun to meet Rick,Roger,Joe,and hopefully more of the DC bunch!!!

I'm REALLY pissed over this whole thing now!!!! Really a bummer Sandy.

Yeah, The concert evening last night was really nice. Catspaw, you were missed. Big Mick, you were missed. Barbara, you were missed. (Especially by me.) The Shambles, you were missed. Actually everybody in this thread and lots of other folks were missed. Lots of Mudcatters' names were taken in vain, in vain.

Boy, if it was this much fun to sing with six or seven Mudcatters, I'm going to take another look at the Mudstock 99 thread! Maybe we could mortgage our 16-year-old to finance the trip!

Okay, Mudcatters who were there: Rick Fielding, Roger in Baltimore, Joe Offer, Bill D, me, LaMarca, Charlie Baum, Bruce O. There wasn't a huge audience overall, about 45 or 50 people I think, but very appreciative of Rick's music. Songbob and his group, the Sidekicks, had a prior gig. They were all very frustrated at missing this evening, too.

Roger in Baltimore backed Rick up on guitar for a Carter family song that Rick played on the autoharp. He asked Bill D to come up and do some dueling autoharps, but Bill was feeling shy, he had forgotten to eat his PowderMilk Biscuits. So Rick asked if we could have a jam after the concert.

We often have a sing-around after a concert, so that was fine. The singing was such a joy that no one wanted to quit. The people who usually close the hall went home (no choice, other obligations) and let Bill lock up when we were done (well after 1 am). The only fly in the ointment: Rick had driven down from Connecticut, and was too worn out to stay for much of the jam.

Oh, it was nice. It wasn't all Mudcat people, but there was that special magic. After two or three rounds, we voted on whether to talk or sing. Singing was a clear favorite, on the grounds that we can talk to each other via the Net, but it's hard to sing together that way.

Joe teases about his camp songs, but he gets an enthusiastic response to them all the same, with lots of volume and great harmonies. Last night he did "Green Grow the Rushes, O" and a camp song version of "Lord Randall" ("Mother make my bed quick, I'm going to be sick...") that we had heard before, because -- Bill D sings it from time to time! -- Joe, you sing *quality* camp songs. (Actually I think he's sparing us the "On Top of Spaghetti" variety, but he needn't, because several local singers remember and sing the stuff they learned at camp.)

Whoops, I just ran out of steam. (Time for my nap.) Other folks who were there will tell you more. I wanted to share what it's like to hear Roger play blues, or hear Charlie sing The Prisoner's Song, or hear LaMarca sing just about anything (last night she did "Flash Company," one of her special songs.) Or to hear Bill sing "The Key of R." But somebody else can tell you all that. I'm just still floating in a happy daze and wanted to share some of it. - Rita Ferrara

'twas indeed a nice evening...Rick is a wonderful instrumentalist, with a fine, rich voice..(and you gotta SEE what he has done to modify an autoharp so that it can be played on the lap as easily as on the shoulder!)

we did take a few pictures..both informal and posed, and I 'll get them developed and scanned as soon as it all permits..(boy..I sure hunger for a digital camera at times like these!)

so..the rest of you..all over the world--if Mudcatters meet and sing...lets us know and take pictures...there will be festivals this summer where some of you will see each other..I'm looking forward to stories about Champlain,...West coast stuff, (Oz festivals are happening NOW).....

Rick Fielding's concert provided the excuse for a wonderful evening of singing together. To all the folks who try to gather in a chat room--to quote the Berrymans, "It's better than that!" As Ferrara said, when we had to choose between singing and chatting, we decided to sing, because you can't do that in a chat room. Not that there wasn't a lot of chatting between songs. Ferrara played her Macarthur harp/zither and sang some Irish songs, and a version of "The Death of Queen Jane" to make you weep at its beauty. We all posed for pictures, and suffered through candid shots. Bill D sang "The Key of R," but he couldn't remember the author's name, so Barbara (Blessings)'s name was invoked--she knows who wrote the song.

For any of you who didn't make it to DC but wished you had, we'll make sure there's another chance at the FSGW Getaway on Columbus Day Weekend in October. Details at www.fsgw.org.

Ah, yes, it was a wonderful evening. That Rick certainly does put on a good show, he does. I wish I had been a little more forward about inspecting that autoharp of yours, Rick. From a distance, it looked quite interesting, but you disappeared before I remembered to go up an take a close look at it. Care to tell us about it? Thanks for the show - it was a pleasure meeting you.
I wish I had taken a closer look at Bill D's autoharp, too, now that I know how old it is. From my vantage sitting next to him, it just looked a bit "battered." I just figured Bill was a little rough on his toys. Those were great songs you sang, Bill - not a bit stodgy, either. Not exactly what I would expect out of a stick-in-the mud, curmudgeonly, folk purist. Heck, in person, you don't even sound grouchy....
I'm still trying to calibrate how high Roger's voice went on one of those blues songs. That young man is darn talented. Well, maybe not so young, though.
Anyhow, it sure was a fun evening, and real pleasure to meet everyone and sing with so many.
-Joe Offer-
The fact that I didn't mention the singing of some people doesn't mean they don't sing well. They do. It's quite a talented bunch that gets together in DC. Makes me sad that I have to leave this week, but it will be nice to be home.

All right, all right, I have to admit that he isn't a bit of programming.....Too many of you saw him, but.....wait....did anyone actually shake hands with him........are you sure he isn't just a clever hologram generated by a computer????.........I don't know, perhaps I will have to just make sure to meet him personally so I can judge for myself. *******GRIN*******

Big Mick who is absolutely Kelly Green with envy that he wasn't there

PS: Congrats on a successful concert to Rick. Let me know when you are anywhere in Michigan.

Well thanks to all of the posters here for such a detailed account. I am sorry things didn't work out for us because a good time was obviously had by all!!! But as Bill said, other times will come. Unfortunately I had completed spraying the furniture in anger before he brought that up.

Have a safe trip back to CA Joe. (I think you're right Mick...although he can somehow create a worldly apparition, don't you find it odd that he seems to be leaving directly from a library computer?. ..and has he been in touch with anyone BETWEEN CA and DC??? May be a kinda' "Tron" thing going on here, you think?

Thanks for the kind words, Rita, I'd have loved to be there too. Sounds like you all had a lovely time.
DC is a ways, though. I'm thinking about hitting the MUDSTOCK in Montana in August. Sounds like the family might be interested in a trip. Want to meet in Montana?
Blessings,
Barbara

Just got back from DC. Marge and I spent the night in town because I expected the Mudcatters might keep us up late (early? 1 AM?). What a wonderful way to welcome in Spring.

Oh, where to start? First, I did shake Joe's hand and he is the real Mc Coy, flesh and blood you know!

I truly enjoyed Rick's concert. A very mellow voice and great guitar work. Rick is capable of flashy guitar work which he showed off to us, but most of his work is not flashy, just tastefully in service to the song. Rick's repertoire runs from the traditional to the contemporary (usually with traditional flavor). Nary a song I heard before, though, and I love that!

I did get to play Sandy's "back up" Larrivee to back up Rick's autoharp on one song. Mighty nice for a first guitar Sandy, much less a back up. Rick did not call "me" up on stage, he just asked for someone who could play guitar. I did give others a 1.5 second chance to beat me to it.

If we had planned ahead we might have miked the guitar and someone besides Rick and I would have heard it. If I had known it was Carter family I would have put a little Carter "scratch" into, too.

I thought about just taking the Larrivee with me when I left the stage. I figured Rick wouldn't notice another stolen guitar. I want you to know, however, Sandy, he did ask for it back right away.

Rick has built himself a moveable box for the chord bars on his autoharp. There are two sets of thumbscrews for positioning the box either up high near the tuning pegs for lap playing or low near the opposite end for that Carter family hugging stlye. They attach to some metal strips built onto the box.

In addition, the chord bars are easy to replace. I think he can put seven in at any one time. Therefore, he can change the available chords depending on what song he wants to do. Nice job, Rick. Did'cha think about a patent?

Bill D. and Joe were going about taking pictures of Mudcatters in various settings, including a family portrait of all who were there.

I brought along my Guild D-25 in hopes that some singing might break out at some point. I lent it to some of those who participated as it was the only guitar in the circle. It gave me a good chance to hear it from "the front" and I am still happy I bought it.

Most of the songs were acapella. Such diversity. Quite a few DC singers seem well versed in English and Celtic traditional music. Judy Cook, whose husband, Dennis, helped establish the Database , is a fine traditional singer who may well burst onto the national scene. She's touring Europe this summer so all you European Mudcatter's keep an eye out.

Rita (Ferrara) plays a small (10" by 12" maybe) hand held harp and did a few Irish tunes (she had had a St. Patrick's Day gig and wanted one last shot to perform them this year). Very nicely done.

LaMarca, who hasn't posted in a while, has a lovely voice. She has too much work at work to dive off into the Mudcat theres days. I was also blessed to have her sit behind me during the concert. She does wonderful, dead-on harmonies. I think she must have listened up to Rick's CD before the concert.

Charlie Baum seems to have a deep repertoire of English songs that he presents in a very traditional manner.

You already know that Joe does songs from Scout camp, but everyone seems to know them. Joe's church training clearly comes out when he sings harmonies, they blend just fine!

Bill D. is not so easily categorized. He plays his autoharp bare fingered and very gently so it is quite quiet. He sings in a homey voice and his sly humor is well featured in his song selection.

A few others whose names escape me sang songs as well. What came through with everyone was the love of singing and the love of the music. Sounds trite perhaps, but it is oh so true.

Catspaw, a special word to you. We all talked about your desire to be there and noted how said we were that your plans were destroyed. I do hope there is a next time. I would encourage you to consider Big Mick's offer to go to the Getaway. I met my first Mudcatters there. It would have been fun without them, but it was even more fun with them.

I am glad I changed my plans. 'Twas a charmed evening.

Roger in Baltimore I am so glad I changed my plans.

Thanks Roger for your thoughts and a great post. I look forward to meeting you and the others and I'm sure we'll work it out here sooner or later.

Shame you couldn't have boosted the Larrivee. We could have negotiated a trade of some sort I'm sure...since I no longer have 'Paw and Cletus at my disposal. Then again, it is Sandy's so...............

Best to you,

Glad to know the guitar got out of the hall safely. Now if it can survive a singaround at Kathy's with that Sidekick bunch (including SongBob), and if Rick doesn't stop for a snack somewhere on the Jersey Turnpike and forget to lock the car, it might get back to me in good shape.

Catspaw: that Larrivee has a beautiful soundhole! Maybe I can interest you in investing a few handmade dulcimers in a slightly used copy of it. No, I s'pose not. What the heck, it was just a thought... By the way, do you know Ron Ewing? He used to build dulcimers in my basement. We had to scoop sawdust out of the washing machine whenever we wanted to do the laundry!

awww...Roger was sitting clear on the other side of the circle...maybe THAT's why I sounded quiet on the autoharp...'cause I almost NEVER play bare-fingered..(tends to get blood on the instrument!) I use a brass finger pick...(like Kilby Snow) and a turtleshell thembpick...and I thought on "Rake & Rambling Boy" that I was really whanging it!..(though on "Rivers of Texas", it is a bit softer) and on "Storms Are on the Ocean" too...) anyway...it was lots of fun, and Roger and I are gonna have to get in tune next time..*grin*...then we can sit close and compare licks!!

Hey, Sandy! My grandma was an Ewing. I've a great little book on the "Ewing Clan of Scotland". Are still in touch with that guy? I've just been getting into the genealogy thing this year.

Thanks to all of you for whetting my appetite for MUDSTOCK 99. I can't wait, but I'll have to have cheat sheets of lyrics. I'll never catch up to your guys' years of experience and have even a smidgen memorized by then. Is there one book I could get, that you all won't groan about, or can you just recommend a top 50 or 100 list to print from the DT? No problem with the tunes, 'cause I've got a good ear and LOVE to harmonise! If I get the fiddle practised enough, I'll bring it, too. I've got a beautiful old thing, from the turn of the century (last, that is). Anybody have an extra bodhran? I do have good rhthym and have a Native American drum which looks like a bodhran and which I try to play like one.

Your descriptions of this weekend, each Mudcatter who was there, and how you felt bring it all to vivid life. Thanks for the technicolour postings, everyone!

Actually Roger, most of what I sang that evening was American, not English:

"Blue-Eyed Boy" is trad. American from the singing of Lilly Mae Ledford via Julie Henigan. "The Federal Soldier" and my version of "I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me" are both trad. American with some Irish in their pedigrees. "Fountain Filled With Blood" is an American songwriter, based on the trad. American hymn. Only "Childe Owlett" (Child 291) was English (adapted from from the singing of Maddy Prior).

Thanks for the corrections Charlie and Bill. I guess I need to get the trifocals after all. Maybe a pair with a hearing aid built in.

And Joe was generous enough to call me a young man, me celebrating 53 at this year's birthday.

Still had a good time, even if I don't see or hear so well.

Just to add an "amen" to one of Roger's observations, about Rick's virtuosity with the guitar. A friend and occasional mudcatter (Lorraine) had to be out of town and called to ask what the evening was like. One thing I said was that Rick is a spectacular guitarist, but generally doesn't use the guitar work to show off. He uses it to support what he's trying to express in the song. A real treat.

OK; Once again I feel sad we're not living in DC any more. My wife & I miss the music, food, etc. We don't miss the crime & crowding, but what the heck...

Now: Susan A-R, what is this abt Lake Champlain in August?? We might just be visiting back east in that month & I'd like to fantasize abt getting a bigger Taylor back east then... It might be an easy jaunt up to Champlian.. We'll be in N.E. PA, (& probably down in the DC area a few days). Details, please?

Also what is this abt "Mudstock" in Montana?

Cheers, BK, who, along w/his sweetie, wishes he were there!
